From the cover: “This is an anthology of a kind which has seldom been attempted since E. V. Lucas’s Book of Verses for Children in 1897, and its scheme differs considerably even from that. It presents, not poems written for adults that are suitable for children, but poems that were, written for children right from the start. Poems grave and gay, nursery verse and even occasional scraps — of nonsense and fantasy are collected here — mainly from the last hundred years. Many of the poems are well known, but often they have been hard to find, and a number have been slipping from memory for this reason. Some of them are quite forgotten, but well worthy of rescue. In search of them Roger Lancelyn Green has explored not only many forgotten volumes, but also the most famous of the Victorian children’s magazines, and unearthed a number of treasures by authors known and unknown. But the search has always been made with the child reader in mind — with the object of amusing and entertaining as well as of provoking interest in an unusual byway of literature which is usually only represented by A Child’s Garden of Verses (already in this series) in any but its most modern developments.”
