Lindfield Fare: A Book of Recipes and Household Hints for Every Good Housewife - Blanche Cumberlege

Haywards Heath: Charles Clarke, 1933, Hardback.
Condition: Very Good. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding which is a little fade. 4th edition, first published 1911. Includes: Recipes; Title page vignette;

From the cover: “This little work, compiled with much care and diligence by our neighbour, Mrs. Cumberlege, of Walsted Place, in the very laudable effort to assist in paying off a debt on the King Edward Hall, Lindfield, has, of course, no pretentions to compete with those classic Cookery Books, handed down for the enlightenment of a grateful posterity, by such past masters as Careme, Francatelli Soyer, Ude (who left the service of my Lord Sefton because one of his guests put pepper in his soup), Vatel (who committed hari-kari in the Royal kitchens of Louis XIV. because the turbots had not arrived in time), or even with the ‘first-catch-your-hare’ Mrs. Beeton of more recent memory.

The Editor also regrets that she has been unable to insert any of the receipts of Athenseus, the Greek — for the simple reason that they do not exist — or of that great chef Trimalcio of Syraceuse, who was very possibly one of the pre-incarnations of M. Escoffier of the Carlton. Additional interest, perhaps, would have been added to the volume if the ‘menu’ of Antony’s banquet to Cleopatra — for which the artist was presented with a city — could have been given, but that also is, unfortunately, not obtainable. Failing these gems of ancient Culinary Art, this publication must, perforce, stand on its own merits, and the valuable extra information included in its pages on Gardening, Needlework, Household and Medical Hints, will no doubt be much appreciated by those who are lucky enough to secure copies, for it is anticipated that fabulous sums will be asked for a first edition before the close of the present century!

I may add that I have the permission of the Editor to express her very sincere and grateful thanks to all who have so kindly contributed to the work.”
