From the cover: “The straits of Otranto — the coasts of Albania and Yugoslavia — the Gulf of Venice — Venice and the lagoons — the east coast of Italy — Brindisi and Otranto — practical information of yacht anchorages — approaches and berthing of ports — chart and sailing direction references — weather conditions — port facilities — shore expeditions, history and sights to see.

Captain Denham first sails up the guarded coast of Albania, then cruises along the bold, rocky shores of Yugoslavia with their dramatic background of rugged mountains and their chain of off-lying islands with sheltered coves and attractive villages. Many of the Dalmatian towns are of great historical and archaeological interest, and the remains of Venetian sovereignty abound.

Next comes the Gulf of Venice with its low-lying coast, its rivers and lagoons, and small fishing ports till’ the triumphant’ city itself is revealed. Guides to the sights of Venice are numerous. Captain Denham reveals the Venice of the mariner. He explores the rivers, the canals, the sheltered shallows and sand-silted lagoons by canoe with the island of Torcello as his base and no other company but local craft and wild birds. His final cruise is down the Apulian coast, relatively straight compared with that of Yugoslavia, but rich in attractive villages.

He again provides a practical book for the yachtsman and an enthralling tour for the armchair traveller.”
