From the cover: “This is the biography of Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Malayan prince who was mainly responsible for securing the independence of his country, and became its first Prime Minister.

There was nothing in the first forty-five years of this remarkable man’s life to indicate his future achievements. He managed to get a pass degree at Cambridge, but failed his first Bar examinations because he found horse-racing, dancing, and the dogs more interesting than the law. His extraordinary successes in the political field have been due to his friendliness, charm, persuasion, and tact rather than to the pushing and scheming of the political careerist.

Abdul Rahman had power and historic greatness thrust upon him. Pitchforked into the presidency of the United National Organization when no one else would look at the job, he had only the reputation of an ineffectual playboy to lean on. But this man, who would consult the racing calendar before agreeing to a political or Government engagement, settled the vital issue of racial policy, closed the ranks of his party, and reformed it so that it became the most powerful in the country.

Later, as Chief Minister, he persuaded the Malays and Chinese to attempt to live together in harmony; he persuaded the nine Malay Rulers that independence was inevitable, even if it did entail the loss of their sovereign rights and privileges. Finally, he persuaded the British Government that Malaya was able to govern itself, and therefore deserved independence.”
