From the cover: “Harry Turnbull was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and educated at Newcastle Royal Grammar School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. For many years he was engaged upon the preparation of reference material on a variety of subjects.
In 1970 he and his wife opened the Thornton Gallery at Snape, situated at the entrance to Wensleydale, and they have specialised in the work of Yorkshire painters, and more particularly artists who were active in the first half of the 20th century. Every December they hold an exhibition of Yorkshire artists, and the idea of preparing the present book arose from the paucity of published information about so many of the artists featured in the exhibitions.”
