From the cover: “In the most recent years, a new area of collecting has become established: automatic wristwatches. Seen from outside, automatic and non-automatic watches differ only in the word “Automatic” on the dial — only when one looks inside the case does the essential difference become visible.
In the main part of this book, all Swiss manufacturers of automatic watches are introduced in catalogue fashion.
Some 200 watches are shown, each in three photos (showing the dial, the complete and the partly disassembled movement). Each firm’s chapter begins with a summation of the development of its calibres. Then all firm calibres are listed in tabular form, and the illustrated types are described in detail in brochure form.
The catalog also includes a historical overview of the development of automatic watches from 1926 to 1978 and the involved firms. In the appendix, the technology of the self-winding mechanism and the movement as such, and several technical terms, are explained.
This book offers information on the functioning and the construction of the individual designs, and makes it possible to arrange them in chronological order. In addition, it offers a basis for the study of a new collecting area.”
