From the cover: “The second volume of the authors’ Illustrated History of L.M.S. Locomotives deals with the pre-Grouping classes which operated on the Western and Central Divisions of the L.M.S. Part One of this volume covers those classes absorbed from the L.N.W.R. including the locomotive stock of the North London Railway, the Wirral Railway and the North Staffordshire Railway. Part Two covers locomotives absorbed from the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, the Furness Railway, the Maryport & Carlisle Railway, the Cleator & Workington Junction Railway and the Knott End Railway.
The authors have endeavoured to illustrate every class of locomotive inherited by the L.M.S. from these companies, and within each class as many variations as possible have been included. Most illustrations have been selected to show locomotives in L.M.S. condition and livery, and although in some cases historical interest has taken precedence over pictorial quality this has been done in the interests of providing a complete pictorial overview. The authors have also included a limited number of illustrations depicting locomotives in B.R. colours to complete the story.
The first volume in this series (already published) deals with the background locomotive history of the L.M.S. from 1923 — 48 including a general review of motive power organisation; locomotive numbering and renumbering; locomotive classification and naming; locomotive liveries; and painting methods and colour shades.”
