The book is divided into five major parts. The sequence of chapters and topics in Parts 1 and 3 generally follows the chronological order in which these activities take place in practice. Long-, medium-, and short-range planning, for example, are treated in that order. Following that logic, order release planning is examined in Chapters 4, 5, and 7; and actual order release is covered in Chapters 12 and 13. Although planning for all time horizons, execution, and control are all occurring at any time in an organization, these concurrent, diverse activities usually concern different periods. Treating PIM activities in the sequence in which they apply to a given time period facilitates the explanation, and hopefully the reader’s understanding, of these activities.
