The fall of Paris in June 1940. Paul Tennant, envoy of the Foreign Office, hurries to Bucharest to assess with the British Minister the grim political outlook. On his way he becomes involved in the tragedy and chaos of the Russian invasion in which his Rumanian friend and journalist Nicu is killed. He determines to make his way to his friend's wife, Naneta, to break the bad news, but as his mission draws him across Transylvania he finds himself drawn into identification with the anger and sufferings of the Balkan people, trapped between the Soviet forces and the Nazis.
