At Home: A Century of New Zealand Design by Douglas Lloyd Jenkins (£32.00)Publisher: Godwit (Aukland: New Zealand) — 2004Binding: Paperback Condition: Very Good. Small scuff to the upper wrapper at the join otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Plans;

From the cover: “At Home: A Century of New Zealand Design is a personal journey by leading architecture and design writer Douglas Lloyd Jenkins, in pursuit of a distinctive New Zealand sense of style, is the story of those New Zealanders who put the creation of a contemporary living environment first, not only as an expression of individualism but as their contribution to the development of a recognisable New Zealand culture.

Taking the first decade of the twentieth century as its starting point, joins the story of the New Zealand house just at the point when its inhabitants began to ask whether a uniquely local expression might be possible. It charts the way in which imported movements, fashions and styles in twentieth-century architecture and design were adopted — or adapted — by New Zealanders to create personalised home environments, whether international in style or an attempt at something distinctively local.

In At Home: A Century of New Zealand Design, Douglas Lloyd Jenkins draws on his depth of knowledge to tell, in an accessible style, an alternative history of New Zealand, in which style and fashion have been key in building local culture. He sheds light on many lesser-known architects and designers, as well as those more widely recognised, challenging the notion of the architect as the sole creative force behind the progressive house.”

Learning and Teaching Social Theory by Edited by Jon Cope, Joyce E. Canaan & Dave Harris (£28.00)Publisher: C-SAP University of Birmingham, — 2006Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 190219134X]Condition: Very Good+. Description: Number 8 in the series. First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “The challenges of learning and teaching theory in the social sciences have been a subject of concern and debate since these subjects first emerged as a part of the higher education canon. However, in recent years, far reaching changes inside and outside the university have compounded such concerns in the minds of both students and teachers as higher education is re-organised within the logic of neo-liberalism. The authors in this volume discuss these contemporary contexts and reflect upon the difficulties and opportunities that arise in the classroom and beyond. This monograph enables authors from several nations — the United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand and South Africa — with a shared concern about the state of the university at present and the challenges that this offers for them and their students, to consider how engagement with social theory can help develop the kinds of critical evaluation skills that students will need in the world they enter after graduation. The book therefore represents essential reading for anyone considering how to encourage students and lecturers to consider the relevance of learning and teaching social theory for their appreciation of the world today..”Notes: Size: 8¼" x 5¾". From the Ends of the Earth by Christian Lamb (£19.00)Publisher: Bene Factum Publishing — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 1903071089]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Signed by the author on the half-title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Colour Drawings;

From the cover: “What risks did the early plant collectors take to bring us the plants we know and love? Who found what and where? And how similar are their finds to the plants we grow today? Christian Lamb has been to extraordinary lengths to find out, as we soon discover in From the Ends of the Earth.

This lively and richly-illustrated book is all about the special plants that Christian grows in her small garden in Cornwall, which she calls her Living Plant Museum. The plants are mostly chosen because she likes them, but also for their fascinating and colourful history. Christian tells us which collectors found her treasures — and the amazing challenges they faced bringing them back to our shores — with many quotes from diaries and personal writings which bring her hero plantaholics to life. She has dug deep into the Linnean, Kew, British, Royal Horticultural and Natural History Libraries to unearth all kinds of new or little-known facts.

Christian also gaily recounts her own intrepid adventures following in the footsteps of the early collectors; around New Zealand in the wake of Joseph Banks, up the Yangtze after Robert Fortune, to North, South and Central America in the paths of Lewis and Clark, the Lobb brothers and others — all the more inspiring since Christian is a spry octogenarian, who might by now have been expected to have hung up her spade.”

The Commons in the New Millennium: Challenges and Adaptation by Nives Dolsak & Elinor Ostrom (£17.00)Publisher: Cambridge, London: The MIT Press — 2003Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0262541424]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Diagrams; Tables;

From the cover: “Globalization, population growth, and resource depletion are drawing increased attention to the importance of common resources such as forests, water resources, and fisheries. It is critical that these resources be governed in an equitable and sustainable way.

The Commons in the New Millennium presents cutting-edge research in common property theory and provides an overview and progress report on common property research. The book analyzes new problems that owners, managers, policy makers, and analysts face in managing natural commons. It examines recent findings about the physical characteristics of the commons, their complexity and interconnectedness, and the role of social capital. It also provides empirical studies and suggestions for sustainable development.

The topics discussed include the role of financial, political, and social capital in deforestation, community efforts to gain political influence in Indonesia, the Maine lobster industry, outcomes of the implementation of individual transferable quotas in New Zealand and Iceland fisheries, and design of multilateral emissions trading for regional air pollution and global warming.”

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of World Cricket by Peter Arnold (£14.50)Publisher: W. H. Smith — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0863075975]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a slight ripple to the top corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of World Cricket, with its lavish illustrations, many in colour, brings to life the whole panorama of the international game. The great matches and the great players are all vividly portrayed in words and pictures.

The largest section deals with Test cricket from its inception. Every series played is described, from the first in 1877 to the Australian visit to England in 1985 — from Charles Bannerman’s 165 not out which won the first-ever Test match for Australia, to the great batting of David Gower which won back the Ashes 108 years later.

The World Cup and other one-day international matches are also described in their various sections. Cricket history is reviewed from the mists of pre-Hambledon days, through professionalism, county cricket, and the emergence of the MCC to the rapid growth of one-day cricket in the 1960s.

A Gallery of Great Players highlights the careers of nearly 200 of the best cricketers from W. G. Grace to lan Botham, Viv Richards and Allan Border, with extended biographies and full career figures for 67 of them.

A comprehensive records section completes the book. Over 200,000 words and over 450 pictures, many in full colour, provide readers with hours of enjoyment: replaying the matches, reliving the careers of the players, comparing the records and feats of the immortals.

The book is a splendid read and an invaluable source of reference for all cricket fans.”

Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “At long last full use is being made of the opportunities provided by climate and topography to create gardens which are almost as diverse as our unique country.

Within the pages of this book are 33 outstanding gardens, chosen because collectively they show the wide range of gardening styles in New Zealand. The story of each is told by an owner or someone closely connected with the garden, providing a rare insight into its development and maintenance. Included are gardens large and small and of town and country; there is even a garden on remote Chatham Island. Some have been in the same family for generations, others are only a few years old, but those who tend them all share a common bond: the love of gardens and gardening.

Superb colour photographs complement each story, depicting in vivid detail the qualities which make the New Zealander’s garden so special.”

To prove otherwise the author, a young Auckland journalist, travelled the country twice – from the backblocks of Northland to the Bluff, interviewing old identities, chasing threads of long-buried tales, and digging deep into newspaper files and library archives. Cricket is a brisk business, with powerful sponsors, young blood, and turnstiles clicking over nicely. What made all this possible was the advent of the limited over game — much maligned by the purists but much in demand by the public. This book is a complete record, with scorecards and reports, of all the one-day internationals that have ever been played. Not only does the book provide a cherished keepsake of the never-to-be-repeated excitement of these particular matches, and cater for the well-known obsession of cricket-lovers everywhere for collecting record of a phenomenon — one of the most significant revolutions to sweep through any sport in recent years.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". The Grub Street Dictionary of International Aircraft Nicknames, Variants and Colloquial Terms by John Horton (£11.50)Publisher: Grub Street — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. His book, the first of its kind on the market, explores evocative names such as the Seven Day Bus, the Supermarine PB9 built in a week and the Aardvark, which refers to the General Dynamics F-III and its modus operandi, rather than its appearance as a great long nose grubbing the dirt. The subculture of informal and colloquial names has remained as vigorous and inventive throughout the century and Horton covers models from World War 1 to Vietnam. Such names not only tend to be humorous and anecdotal in nature, but also reveal the more interesting characteristics of the aircraft concerned.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 6". Now, in her fiftieth year on the throne, Brian Hoey — one of our best-informed royal chroniclers — takes a searching look at the ups and downs of Her Majesty’s long reign, and highlights the important difference in people’s attitudes towards the Queen personally and the monarchy in general. The author has had unrivalled access to past and present members of the royal staff and household, as well as to ex-Heads of State, statesmen, politicians and personal friends of the Queen. Nothing they have said is ‘off the record’. The result is a lively, authoritative and revealing portrait of the Queen’s life and work seen largely through the eyes of those who’ve known her and worked with her over the course of half a century.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Letters from a Prince: Edward, Prince of Wales, to Mrs Freda Dudley Ward, March 1918 - January 1921 by Rupert Godfrey (£10.50)Publisher: Little, Brown & Co. — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0316646776]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a small nick to the tail of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Many books have been written about Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor, and his devotion to Wallis Simpson, but little is known of the love affair which played such an important part in the King’s early years: the affair that, perhaps crucially, was to leave him still a bachelor in his early forties.

In 1996, however, a cache of 263 letters, previously thought lost, was discovered — the first of a total of over 2,000 written by Edward, then Prince of Wales, during his sixteen-year relationship with Freda Dudley Ward, the estranged wife of a Liberal MP, who came to dominate his life in the years after the Great War. Dating from just days after their first meeting, during an air raid in London in February 1918, until January 1921, these letters give remarkable new insights into Edward’s character, providing the reader with a greater understanding of how this fascinating figure could later give up his throne for love.

From his war service in Italy and France to family Christmases at Sandringham, from his Empire tours of Canada, New Zealand and Australia, to his day-to-day routine when in England, Edward repeatedly pours out his hopes and fears, revealing to Freda the deep-seated insecurities he felt as Prince of Wales, which he described as ‘the most difficult job in the world’. The letters recount his problems with his father, George V, and his close relationship with his brother, Bertie, later George VI. They record his insensitive reactions to the death of his epileptic brother, John, and the murder of the Czar of Russia, as well as giving new insights into his previous relationships with Marion Coke and Rosemary Leveson-Gower.

Many sides of the Prince’s character are shown -humility, when ‘moving in high circles’ after a visit to the King of Italy; penitence following a casual affair; boyish smugness at his reputation on the hunting field — but above all, his need for Freda’s love, support and encouragement to help him fulfil his duties.

With reproductions of photographs, cards and memorabilia which Edward also sent to his first great love, these extraordinary letters represent a hugely significant historical source about one of the most enigmatic figures of the twentieth century.”

It is now ten years since Roy Webber first published his collection of Cricket Records, and so much has happened in the world of cricket statistics over the period of the 1950’s that a new and enlarged edition is vitally necessary. This book brings the records up to the end of the 1960 season in England, with a postscript on later events.

It is difficult to speak with moderation of the immense labour and knowledge which have gone into the making of this large book. It is the ‘Bible’ of the cricketer and a necessary work in even a small sports library, and it is used as a standard by all authorities.”

At One with the Sea: Alone Around the World by Naomi James (£9.50)Publisher: Book Club Associates — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dustwrapper. Faded at the spine of the dustwrapper. Leans a little. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Maps to the endpapers. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “On 8th June 1978, the world heard the astonishing news that 28-year-old Naomi James had become the first woman to sail single-handed round the globe via Cape Horn — and in the fastest time ever. The daughter of a New Zealand sheep farmer, newly married and with only two years’ sailing experience behind her, Naomi had never handled a boat by herself before -yet, incredibly, she set a new round-the-world record and made sailing history.

At One With The Sea is the frank, vivid and enthralling account of the most amazing lone voyage of them all. Naomi tells of her despair when the radio broke and she faced months of silence; of her embarrassment at discovering — after three months at sea — that she had been confusing latitude with longitude; of her grief when the ship’s kitten, Boris, went overboard; and of the black horror of a dawn capsize. In common with all lone sailors, Naomi lived in dread of Cape Horn; in the end she rounded « that old bogey Horn » without even realising it — « I may even have been asleep at the time. »

This story of heroism with the human touch, of epic courage and endurance, must rank as a classic in the literature of great adventures. It is not merely the memorable record of an historic journey; Naomi’s story also tells us more about why men — and women — dare the elements, and attempt the impossible, in the relentless search for self-knowledge.

On 1st January 1979, in recognition of her extraordinary achievement, she became Dame Naomi James. Her award, Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, is one of the highest given to women.”

Calling the Shots: The Captain's Story by Michael Vaughan with Martin Hardy (£9.50)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0340896272]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Over two glorious summer months in 2005, England’s cricketers secured one of the greatest triumphs in the nation’s sporting history, by reclaiming the Ashes from Australia after eighteen years. One man, as inspirational team captain, master tactician and world-class batsman, was the central figure behind England’s victory. That man was Michael Vaughan.

Calling The Shots: The Captain’s Story is Vaughan’s very personal account of his first three years at the helm of the England side. Since he inherited the captaincy in 2003, Vaughan has been instrumental in transforming England from perennial underachieves into a team capable of taking on — and beating — the best in the world. Under Vaughan’s captaincy, England achieved a record-breaking eight successive Test match victories during 2004, beating New Zealand 3-0, the West Indies 4-0, and winning the first match of the winter tour to South Africa. Of course, all this was eclipsed by the Ashes series that followed it — a thrilling contest that captured the imagination of millions around the world.

Focusing on the art of leadership, Calling the Shots takes us inside the mind of the Test captain, exposing the highly pressurised world of international cricket like never before. Michael Vaughan shares for the first time his thoughts on tactics, decision-making and man-management, granting the reader unprecedented access to the England dressing room as Vaughan’s men achieved their remarkable run of success. With the insider’s account of England’s victorious 2005 Ashes campaign at its heart, Calling the Shots is the definitive, inspirational story of how English cricket was made great again..”

Caribbean Crusade: New Zealand Cricketers in the West Indies by D. J. Cameron (£9.50)Publisher: Readers Union — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Cricket-lovers everywhere will want to read this lively, spontaneous account of a great adventure — the first tour of the West Indies by a New Zealand cricket team. In earlier years the West Indians had made themselves firm favourites with the New Zealand cricketing public in tours of that country, and honours had been fairly even. But how would New Zealand fare under very different conditions, with a tropic sun, enthusiastically partisan crowds and strange wickets? The answer is in this book. Glenn Turner’s fantastic four double centuries, the. fighting captaincy of Bevan Congdon, the magnificent bowling of Bruce Taylor combined with superb team-fielding to make the 1972 tour of the West Indies a memorable one.

And, as Gary Sobers acknowledges in his foreword, many young West Indian players of promise have benefited from their encounters with a team that played hard and never gave up. The author gives pen pictures of players on both sides and fills in the fascinating and diverse background of the islands the team visited.”
