British Battleships of World War Two: The Development and Technical History of the Royal Navy's Battleships and Battlecruisers from 1911 to 1946 by Alan Raven & John Roberts (£192.00)Publisher: London: Arms & Armour Press — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0853681414]Condition: Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Leans. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: Howe and Queen Elizabeth at sea in December 1944 by John Roberts. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates [4]; Diagrams; Tables; Fold-Out Maps;

From the cover: “This large and lavishly-illustrated volume presents a comprehensive account of the design and construction of the British battleships that served in the Second World War — from the Queen Elizabeth class to Vanguard. Much of the information contained in this book, which is the result of exhaustive research conducted over many years, is published for the first time, for only recently have official documents of the period been made available to the public. British Battleships of World War Two is therefore unique in making available the full story of the design and construction of every battleship and battlecruiser class of the period as first built, together with all details of the various refits and reconstructions that each vessel underwent during its service life. The contents also include a comprehensive review of developments in weapons, gunnery, fire-control, radar, protection and propulsion, taking in every aspect of battleship design and usage; and there are sections devoted to the actions involving British battleships during the Second World War, and to comparisons between the British battleships and their counterparts in other navies.

Complementing the text are some three hundred photographs, which in themselves constitute a history of the vessels. These are supplemented by numerous superb specially-drawn sets of plans and elevations — fully detailed and based on the official builders’ plans — comprising over three hundred individual drawings. They depict the ships not only in their “as built” configurations, but show also the many modifications and alterations carried out during their careers. British Battleships of World War Two is a magnificent volume that takes its place as the definitive work of reference on the subject.”

The Imperial Russian Navy by Anthony J. Watts (£154.00)Publisher: London: Arms & Armour Press — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0853689121]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is a little faded at the spine and onto the margins of the panels. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Occupying a most important place in naval history, the fleets of the Imperial Russian Navy represent a major subject for study by serving officers, senior historians and naval buffs. Few published accounts have done justice to the topic, and none has offered the range of photographic illustration presented in this volume. The three centuries of naval development covered here demonstrate that its constant need to control its own ports and precious narrow exits to the oceans, as well as its pursuit of access to the Mediterranean, has caused the Russian Navy to be regularly in combat and at the forefront of advances in design, armament and strategy. Throughout the battles with its neighbours, the Crimean, Russo-Japanese conflicts, and the First World War, the Imperial Russian Navy deployed novel ships and weapons, including early use of torpedoes and of the submarine.

Anthony Watts has brought together an unprecedented collection of photographs and data to provide this new study of a most significant element of military history. Through his summary of Russian naval evolution, his compendium of technical information and the pictorial coverage, he has provided a most important contribution to naval literature, perhaps the most valuable volume on the subject for eighty years.”

Naval Camouflage 1914-1945: A Complete Visual Reference by David Williams (£92.00)Publisher: Rochester: Chatham Publishing — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861761546]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Very slight rippling to the last few leaves otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Jacket illustration: The French cruiser, Gloire. . Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “This authoritative history of camouflage is undoubtedly the most comprehensive study of the subject to date. Visual and illustrative in its approach, it concentrates on the British and US navies, but the camouflage patterns of enemy navies (and selected allies) are covered as well.

Contrary to popular belief, naval camouflage at sea was not intended to ‘hide’ ships, and an in-depth commentary explains the theory and development of visual deception, and the different ways in which it was intended to work at sea.

The core of the book is a listing of all the major patterns and schemes, with their colours, characteristics and function. Wherever possible each is illustrated with at least one photograph providing the reader with a visual reference as well as a description; where there were variations, as many as possible are depicted.

This is a subject of immense importance and significance for all those with an interest in the warships of the two World Wars — this comprehensive reference book is simply the best available.”

Before the Ironclad: Ship Design, Propulsion and Armament in the Royal Navy, 1815-60 by Edited by David K. [Keith] Brown (£50.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0851775322]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper sunned at the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [14]; Black & White Photographs; Graphs; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “In the massive revolution that affected warship design between Waterloo and Warrior, the Royal Navy is often depicted as fiercely resisting every change until it was almost too late, but this new history of the transition from sail to steam challenges these old assumptions.

Beginning with the structural improvements of Robert Seppings, the book traces the gradual introduction of more scientific methods and the advent of steam and the paddle fighting ship, iron hulls and screw propulsion. It analyses the performance of the fleet in the Crimean War, and concludes with the design of Warrior, the first iron-built, sea-going capital ship in the world.

In passing, the author reveals an organisation that was well aware of new technology, carefully evaluating its potential use, and occasionally (as with its enthusiastic espousal of iron hulls) moving too quickly for its own good. Based on much new research, and a lifetime’s understanding of the technical problems, Before the Ironclad is a well-balanced and coherent account of general developments, as well as an in-depth study of the ships themselves.”

Nelson's Ships: A History of the Vessels in Which He Served 1771 - 1805 by Peter Goodwin (£42.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0851777422]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight rippling to the foot of the leaves, possibly caused by slight damp at some time, but inoffensive. Description: Jacket illustration: Nelson's Flagships at Anchor, 1807 by Nicholas Pocock. This is a composite image of Nelson's flagships at the Spithead anchorage painted in 1807. From left to right, Agamemnon, Vanguard (showing her broadside), stern view of Elephant flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the Blue, Captain and then Victory firing a salute and flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the White. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Much has been written about Nelson, the man and his successful career from midshipman to great commander, culminating with his glorious death at the Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805. Added to this, considerable literary works have been published about his flagship at that famous battle, HMS Victory, but little has been written about the other vessels in which he served throughout his career, providing him with experience vital to his professional and personal development.

Beginning with HMS Raisonnable, the 3rd Rate 64-gun ship in which Nelson began his naval career at the start of 1771, Nelson’s Ships provides a service history of the 25 Royal Navy vessels in which Nelson served. All the famous ships-of-the-line are included: Agamemnon, the vessel of which he assumed command in 1793, Captain, which he commanded at Cape St. Vincent, Vanguard, flagship at the Nile and of course Victory. For the first time many of the smaller ships Nelson served in such as Carcass, Badger and La Minerve, are examined. A final chapter is devoted to the 12 ships in which Nelson served only for a very brief period of time.

A comprehensive background to each vessel is provided examining the design, construction and armament. A full service history then follows including the actions in which the ship participated, any modifications that were made, refit histories and costs, a complete list of the commanding officers of the ship and finally the ship’s ultimate fate. Numerous illustrations, superb plans and draughts specially drawn by the author, and a lavish colour artwork section complements the text.

The incidents that occurred whilst Nelson was on board each ship reveal an abridged version of his career and offer both the enthusiast and general reader an insight into the man himself. Utilising the ships’ logs allows the work to examine many important issues in Nelson’s navy such as victualling and health, discipline and punishment, ship handling and repair thus providing a fascinating insight into the reality of life at sea and disproving many of the myths surrounding the Georgian navy. Fully researched and developed by one of the most well known and respected Nelson historians, Nelson’s Ships is an invaluable work for both the academic and enthusiast alike.”

U.S. Destroyer: An Illustrated Design History by Norman Friedman (£42.00)Publisher: London, Melbourne: Arms & Armour Press — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0853685215]Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Heavily bruised at the head, tail and corners of the boards with damaged to the dust wrapper which has a tape repair to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Front hinge starting. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise and a good reference copy of an uncommon title. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “For almost a century, the destroyer has been the image of sleek, aggressive power. This hook explains how the U. S. Navy developed its destroyers. It also describes the naval and civilian forces that determined the design and operation of these ships. In the past two decades, U. S. destroyer design, now typified by the Spruance and Perry classes, has become increasingly controversial: for example, nuclear vs. conventional power, endurance vs. speed. Norman Friedman, a highly regarded authority on U. S. warships, discusses the reasoning behind the designs of these ships — this reasoning, he believes, will continue to dominate U. S. warship development for the remainder of this century.

From their torpedo-boat forebears onward, all destroyer classes are illustrated and described in detail. Many designs that were never carried to construction are also discussed because of their significance in the development of the ships actually built. These designs range from the large “destroyer leader” of 1919, through the 40-knot Seahawk of the sixties, to those that preceded the current Spruance and Ticonderoga.

The author also describes the destroyer escorts (DE, now frigates, FF), the large post-war frigates (DL/DLG, now redesignated cruisers), and the Perry-class FFGs. They are all interrelated, all part of the destroyer story.

An entire chapter is devoted to destroyer combat experience in World War II, as this had a major influence on ship design and development. Extracts from battle reports made at that time are included. Separate chapters describe destroyer weapon systems for antiaircraft and antisubmarine warfare as they have evolved since the beginnings of the destroyer force.

Friedman’s detailed descriptions and illustrations of ships and of their modifications in service should be of great interest to naval historians, model-builders, and to all ship lovers. Most classes are illustrated by detailed profiles drawn by renowned draftsman Arthur D. Baker III, and in many cases inboard profiles showing the internal arrangements of the ships are included. Detailed photographs of World War II ships alter relit should be invaluable to ship model-makers. As a monument to the men of the destroyer force and to their ships, the book is unsurpassable.

This is the only history of U. S. Destroyer development based entirely on the internal, formerly classified papers of the U. S. Navy. For all who would like to understand the origins of the present Navy, and for all who hope to shape the Navy of the future, U. S. Destroyers is vital reading.”

Nelson's Ships: A History of the Vessels in Which He Served 1771 - 1805 by Peter Goodwin (£32.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851777422]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Knocked at the bottom corner of the upper board otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: 2nd printing. [First Published: 2002] Jacket illustration: Nelson's Flagships at Anchor, 1807 by Nicholas Pocock. This is a composite image of Nelson's flagships at the Spithead anchorage painted in 1807. From left to right, Agamemnon, Vanguard (showing her broadside), stern view of Elephant flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the Blue, Captain and then Victory firing a salute and flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the White. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;
