The Oil Engine Manual by D. S. D. [Denys Stephen Dodsley] Williams (£69.00)Publisher: Temple Press — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with nicks at the spine ends and a short, triangular, crease and tear to the foot of the upper panel. Tanning to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: 6th edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1939] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Graphs [1 Fold-Out]; Diagrams; Tables; Period Advertisements;

From the cover: “The first edition of this Manual appeared some 16 years ago and later editions were widely used as books of instruction during the Second World War. Considerable developments in engine design and a variety of applications took place during the period covered by the preceding five editions. In more recent years, however, the pace has, far from slackening, actually accelerated, so that the fundamental background of oil engine design has undergone considerable changes. The number of manufacturers has varied, whilst their power ranges have been made more extensive, even though the actual number of engine models has decreased somewhat through rationalization.

This new edition of “The Oil Engine” Manual has been very largely rewritten to cover changes occurring during the past five years. It is now fully up-to-date, as is only possible when the work is produced in the office of a journal dealing with the subject on a full time and highly specialized basis.

Chapters in the first part of the Manual give the background for engine design (of various forms) for all duties other than marine applications. In the second part, leading details are given of all the current makes of oil engine constructed in the United Kingdom, again for all purposes other than ship and boat duties. The third and final part is a technical appendix, which will be found useful, not only for those concerned with engine manufacture, but for those engaged in the use of such prime movers. Students also will find the whole book of permanent value to them in their work relating to this type of heat engine.”

The Encyclopedia of Modelmaking Techniques by Christopher Payne (£18.50)Publisher: New Burlington — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861555407]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Slightly rubbed at the spine ends. The reverse of the dust wrapper has offset from a scrape to the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Drawings; Diagrams;

From the cover: “The Encyclopedia of Modelmaking Techniques presents an entirely new techniques-based approach to modelmaking. Materials, methods and components used in one area of modelmaking can often be transferred to another with very positive results. Rather than dealing with traditional subject areas, four main themes are identified — Structures, Landscapes, Figures and animals and Vehicles and machinery — and used to demonstrate the relevant techniques for a variety of materials. This approach enables the professional or hobby building modeller to access the section on figures to populate his landscape. Similarly, the military figure or vehicle modeller can find in the landscape section the secrets for placing his work in a background context.

This book also includes a brief history of models and modelmaking. A section on design looks at the different processes of research and construction and designing specifically for safety, ease of construction, display, control and operation. Comprehensive tools and materials lists identify both essential and supplementary items and ensure that you have the correct tools for your modelling projects.

Each of the four major themes is illustrated by a series of step-by-step projects, demonstrating the various techniques and materials used in professional and hobby modelmaking. An inspirational gallery of works by highly regarded modelmakers is accompanied by detailed descriptions of how the models were created. Finally, a section on presentation will show you how to make the most of your projects by displaying them to their best effect.”

Making Cars At Longbridge: 100 Years in the Life of a Factory by Gillian Bardsley & Colin Corke (£11.50)Publisher: Stroud: The History Press — 2011Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0752437410]Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles;

From the cover: “Containing unique images from the official company archive, this book charts almost one hundred years of car-making at Longbridge near Birmingham. The Austin Motor Company was founded here by Herbert Austin in 1905 and it has since been home to the British Motor Corporation, British Leyland, Rover Group and latterly MG Rover. Its products include some of the most famous British models ever produced: the pioneering Austin Seven of the 1920s; the classic Mini, introduced to the world in 1959 with in astonishing production run of 41 years and a final tally of over 5 million; the Austin Metro, trumpeted as the ‘British Car to Beat the World’; and in later years the best-selling MG TF and elegant Rover 75.

The factory has been a major employer and an integral part of the local community since its foundation. The sad events of April 2005, when MG Rover went into administration, will radically change the landscape. But the area is now looking to the future, never forgetting its long and proud tradition of manufacturing.”

Top edge of the dust wrapper a little ruffled, rubbed at the top corner of the upper panel and a ½" closed tear to the leading edge at the top corner of the lower panel. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “In many ways the crash of a black Mercedes S-280 into the thirteenth pillar of Paris’s Alma Tunnel on the early morning of 3 1 August 1997 resembles a thousand other fatal road accidents. This particular tragedy was, however, exceptional. In causing the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, the playboy son of Mohammed Al Fayed, owner of Harrods and one of the world’s richest men, it sent shock waves around the globe that months afterwards show no sign of abating.

Behind the immediate possible causes — speed, alcohol, a chase by paparazzi and even a collision with a second vehicle — lies an array of seemingly random variables, all of which led inexorably to the fatal conclusion.

Thomas Sancton and Scott MacLeod, two highly experienced reporters of Time magazine based in Paris, look back into the question of Diana’s relationship with Dodi to discuss what it was in the personality of this jet-setting playboy and movie industrv fringe player that attracted and reassured Diana after her unhappy marriage to the Prince of Wales and several unsatisfying affairs.

They ask why Dodi’s conquest of Diana was so important to his father. Were Diana and Dodi planning to marry? Was Diana pregnant? Is there any grain of truth behind the conspiracy theories — particularly rampant in the Middle East — that Diana and Dodi were victims of a British intelligence plot?

The questions are myriad. Sancton and MacLeod have investigated the crash as closely as the French police. They now have many of the answers. Death of a Princess is their highly revealing report.”

The Encyclopedia of Modelmaking Techniques by Christopher Payne (£10.50)Publisher: Select Editions — 2004Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781861609694]Condition: Very Good. Slightly warped due to the size otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Drawings; Diagrams;

By the time Rama departed for its next unknown destination many wonders had been uncovered, but few mysteries solved. Only one thing was clear: everything the enigmatic builders of Rama did, they did in threes.

Eighty years later the second alien craft arrived in the solar system. This time, Earth had been waiting. Now Rama II is on its way out of the solar system. Aboard it are three humans, two men and a woman, left behind when the expedition departed. Ahead of them lies the unknown, a voyage no human has ever experienced.”

A pleasant enough reading copy. Boards and spine a little dulled and soiled. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Slight oiliness to parts of the text but a usuable manual all the same.Description: Illustrated with line drawings. From the cover: “This do-it-yourself Workshop Manual has been specially written for the owner who wishes to maintain his car in first class condition and to carry out his own servicing and repairs. Considerable savings on garage charges can be made, and one can drive in safety and confidence knowing the work has been done properly.

Comprehensive step-by-step instructions and illustrations are given on all dismantling, overhauling and assembling operations. Certain assemblies require the use of expensive special tools, the purchase of which would be unjustified. In these cases information is included but the reader is recommended to hand the unit to the agent for attention.

Throughout the Manual hints and tips are included which will be found invaluable, and there is an easy to follow fault diagnosis at the end of each chapter.

Whilst every care has been taken to ensure correctness of information it is obviously not possible to guarantee complete freedom from errors or to accept liability arising from such errors or omissions.

Instructions may refer to the right-hand or left-hand sides of the vehicle or the components. These are the same as the right-hand or left-hand of an observer standing behind the car and looking forward.”

The Top Gear Story by Martin Roach (£9.50)Publisher: John Blake — 2011Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 184358333X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “From humble beginning as a 1970s motoring show, Top Gear has achieved world domination. Reaching a peak in the 1990s thanks to presenter Jeremy Clarkson, the original series then faced the axe in 2001 — but Clarkson and producer Andy Wilman successfully pitched a new format to BBC bosses and Top Gear returned to become the irreverent, funny and often controversial show we now know and love. The addition of co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May completed the Top Gear dream team and ratings soared as viewers tuned in to see the latest Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, arguments over the Cool Wall and Power Laps by the mysterious Stig.

Recent series have been defined by their madcap challenges, where Clarkson, Hammond and May have achieved such feats as building a convertible Renault Espace and taking part in the 24-hour Britcar race — with predictably hilarious results. Hour-long specials such as the 1000-mile journey across Africa in cars bought for only £1500, and a race to the magnetic North Pole in which Clarkson and May became the first people to drive a motor vehicle to the Pole while Richard Hammond joined a dog sled team, have cemented the Top Gear’s reputation as much more than just a motoring show. But the show’s most shocking moment came in 2006, when Hammond suffered serious head injuries while driving a Vampire turbojet drag racing car at over 300 mph. Top Gear has long attracted criticism for its dangerous stunts and the presenters’ controversial opinions, but thankfully ‘the Hamster’ made a full recovery and Top Gear has continued to pull in massive audiences across the world.

This is the full story of the unstoppable rise of Clarkson, Hammond, May and The Stig — and how they have transformed an ordinary programme about cars into one of the most famous and best-loved TV programmes of the 21st century.”

Wave Me Goodbye: Stories of the Second World War by Edited by Anne Boston (£9.50)Publisher: Virago Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9780860688372]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges.Description: From the cover: “« Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye » ran the jaunty hit song as women and men were encouraged to ‘Do their Bit’ in the years of the Second World War. But behind the songs and the official patriotic line lay the complicated realities of wartime life. In this marvellous collection of stories by British and American women writers, war is evoked, in the words of Elizabeth Bowen ‘more as a territory than as a page of history’. Here, in stories by, among others, Rosamond Lehmann; Kay Boyle; Olivia Manning; Rose Macaulay; Barbara Pym; Dorothy Parker; Jean Rhys; Stevie Smith; Sylvia Townsend Warner; Beryl Bainbridge and Dons Lessing; is the world of radio news and air-raid warnings, of the Blitz which reduces neighbourhoods to rubble and a lifetime’s possessions to dust. Food, and privacy, are dreamed of and unattainable luxuries — women bid goodbye to husbands, lovers, brothers and sons — and years later try to remake their lives with strangers. For the people of these stories, war is less about progress on the frontline of battle than about the daily struggle to keep homes, families and relationships alive: to snatch pleasure from danger, and strength and comfort from shared experience — and about the subtle damages inflicted on boys and men by the exigencies of war.

At a period in history when time was agonizingly curtailed, the short story provided the perfect vehicle through which emotion and incident could be captured. Taken from many of the publications of the forties, these stories offer a wonderfully authentic portrait of life during the Second World War: here are superb examples of story telling by some of the finest writers of a generation”

Writing Technical Reports by Bruce M. Cooper (£4.00)Publisher: Penguin — 1965Binding: Paperback Condition: Good. An adequate reading copy only. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “This new Pelican offers to scientists, engineers, and ethers the main principles of writing a technical report, from first draft to final version. Bruce Cooper, who heads a department of liberal studies in a technical college, maintains that a report needs to be more than a vehicle for recording exact information. It is, in fact, an exercise in human relations, in which clarity is certainly as important as correctness. The varying outlooks of the potential readers must be considered as thoroughly as the factual contents of the report. Arguing strongly for personal involvement in the writer — to the extent, if necessary, of employing the first person singular — the author gives advice on the structure of the whole report, on grammar, on the construction of sentences, on the choice of vocabulary and the avoidance of mere jargon, and on punctuation. His chapters are effectively illustrated with quotations from published technical papers and reports.”Notes: Jacket designed by Alan Spain. Size: A Format (7" x 4½"). Roadcraft — The Police Driver's Manual by Anon. (£0.01)Publisher: Her Majesty's Stationery Office — 1979Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0113407211]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers.Description: From the cover: “Over ninety per cent of road accidents are due to human error.

This alarming statistic can only be reduced if drivers and other road users improve their road sense. The motor vehicle can be a lethal weapon, and road discipline must be accepted. Some of it has the authority of law; the remainder is more of an advisory kind based entirely upon commonsense and reasonable consideration for every user of the road.

Roadcraft is the Police Drivers’ Manual. It has been prepared by police drivers who over many years have gained considerable knowledge and expertise applying these driving techniques under all conditions. It is aimed at all road users to raise standards of driving, increase the margin of safety on the roads and cut down the unacceptable figures of death and injury resulting from road accidents.

The message of the book is contained in what the compilers call the Ten Commandments of Motoring which end with the injunction — Drive according to the Highway Code and you will drive safely.

This book should be in every vehicle owner’s glove compartment and every driver should know its contents thoroughly.”
