Forward For England by Bobby Charlton (£14.50)Publisher: Pelham Books — 1967Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper, minor loss at the spine ends and a 1" closed tear to the foot of the lower panel. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “As a boy he had one ambition, to be a professional footballer and to play for England. He achieved not only this boyhood ambition but the footballer’s dream and the final accolade when England won the World Cup at Wembley on July 30th, 1966. From the coal-mining village of Ashington to becoming one of the greatest forwards England has ever produced has been a long, hard road and the journey makes a deeply compelling story. He rose to fame on the wave of sentiment which swept Europe following the tragic air disaster at Munich in 1958… a disaster which decimated the Manchester United team which had been so carefully moulded by Matt Busby. Since then Bobby has never faltered. He tells, with the help of Neil Burden-Smith, of his life, thoughts, of Manchester United, of three World Cups and what it was like to wear England’s white shirt and play with and against some of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen. He also describes in detail those feverish weeks last summer when the World Cup competition gripped the hearts and imaginations of people all over the world.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". The Khrushchev Pattern by Frank Gibney (£13.00)Publisher: Prentice-Hall International — 1961Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with some very small nicks. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “DURING THE HALF DECADE between 1955 and 1960, men watched with dreadful fascination the uncoiling of the Khrushchev Pattern, one of the most startling switches in the history of international politics, and one of the cleverest. The leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, used his power to swing his country and the entire Communist movement along a path of “competitive coexistence” that seemed to challenge not only the tactics of Stalin’s past rule but the very premises of the Communist system. Frank Gibney shows how successfully this new tactic operated with the world’s Communist parties and their sympathizers—in the widest variety of circumstances. In some areas it posed great problems for Khrushchev, because its surface friendliness and emphasis on a Popular Front approach threatened the historic unity of Communist discipline. At moments, as in the Hungarian revolt of 1956, the entire approach had to be sacrificed to the ruthless needs of Soviet power politics. But by and large Khrushchev’s “soft sell” version of Communism proved a far more formidable menace to the Free World than Stalin’s rigid line. Although the emphasis in his policy became openly aggressive after the U-2 incident and Khrushchev’s Summit breakup in the spring of 1960, the gains made by the Khrushchev Pattern were substantial. In a world where so many of the new, uncommitted nations appeared so ready to play off East against West, the superficially reasonable Khrushchev Pattern was surely as terrible a threat as Stalin’s more obvious aggression.”Notes: Jacket designed by Robert Jonas. The Autobiography: My Manchester United Years by Sir Bobby Charlton (£10.50)Publisher: Headline — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0755316193]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In this first part of Sir Bobby’s remarkable autobiography he describes his early life growing up in a tight-knit mining community in the north-east of England and charts his extraordinary career at Manchester United. Charlton is United through and through. A member of the original ‘Busby Babes’, Sir Bobby devoted his career to the club. He won everything the game had to offer, played alongside some of the greats such as Best and Law and, on a snow-covered runway in Munich in February 1958, was involved in arguably the most shocking football tragedy of all time. With his beloved Reds, Charlton tasted FA Cup victory in the emotional final of 1963, won three First Division championships and in 1968 reached the pinnacle of club success, by defeating Benfica in the European Cup final. Inevitably, such highs were balanced with no less dramatic lows — the 1957 European Cup semi-final, the highly charged 1958 FA Cup loss only weeks after Munich, and the 1969 European Cup defeat by Milan.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Defence Of Freedom by The Editors of La Prensa (£9.50)Publisher: T. V. Boardman & Co. — 1952Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with slight fraying at the spine ends. Leans slightly. Boards slightly bowed. Price Clipped. Offset to the blanks. Description: From the cover: “In the first issue of La Prensa, dated October 18th, 1869, its founder, Dr. Jose Paz wrote: “Truth and honesty are to determine our point of view. Liberty, progress and civilisation are the only ends we pursue. As no financial considerations have weight with us, we are confident of maintaining a sufficiently independent attitude to remain genuine interpreters of public opinion”. To that first statement of policy La Prensa has held unswervingly ever since, and as a result, it became not only the leading newspaper of Buenos Aires but the greatest Spanish-language newspaper in the world.

Alberto Gainza Paz, editor-in-chief and grandson of its founder, who foiled arrest by the Peron government by escaping across the River Plate to Uruguay in March 1951, has with his fellow editors given here for the first time the astonishing story of what La Prensa went through, beginning in 1940, when the government of a hitherto democratic country began to lean the other way. Overt action started in 1944 when the police closed down the paper for five days because of an editorial, criticising hospital management. As the screws tightened, mobs assaulted the paper’s famous building whose doors had been open day and night, but which now had to be buttressed with steel reinforcements; the editor was arrested, then released, without explanation; an “oral newspaper” started up across the street, consisting of loudspeakers that blared scurrility to distract La Prensa’s staff; a custom’s violation was trumped up; and as the climax approached there came the “great persuader” of paper rationing. Still the publishers and the thirteen hundred loyal employees refused to knuckle under.

So the Government invented a “labour” dispute. On January 25th, 1951, an ultimatum was delivered from the government-sponsored Union of News Vendors, so absurd in its demands that it was obviously meant to force La Prensa to shut down, rather than to comply. It succeeded. And the debacle was crowned with insult when on November 19th, 1951, there emerged from the same printing plant, the first issue of a newspaper with the same name, but published by the puppet union.

The events of La Prensa’s decade of martyrdom make a stirring story of a great institution — temporarily eclipsed — and a lesson for the free world to know and understand..”

People's Prison by Geoffrey Jackson (£9.50)Publisher: Readers Union — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “This is Sir Geoffrey Jackson’s absorbing account of his experiences in 1971 when, as British Ambassador to Uruguay, he was captured in Montevideo. First he describes how the tension built up and how, knowing what had happened toothers, he knew that his liberty, if not his life, was threatened. Then the shocking daylight snatch… and the best part of a year spent underground, in two successive dungeons, of a so-called People’s Prison.

His captors were the Tupamaros, a self-designated Army of National Liberation who had chosen the short cut of violence to bypass Uruguay’s economic troubles. His kidnapping without trace for over eight months was aimed at toppling the government to which he was accredited.

In this personal narrative he has abstained from political commentary and ideological analysis. It is a chronicle full of immediate insights into the new violence, and the mind and existence of the urban guerrilla. Yet he portrays his young captors with full respect for common humanity, and writes as one who indeed loves his fellow men, however he may detest some of their actions.

The author’s own fierce disciplines had their roots in faith and many other well-tended corners of his native tradition. His story itself conveys why he survived, often in solitary confinement and unspeakable hardship, to ‘come home’ — as his moving epilogue depicts — with his warmth and gaiety of spirit intact.”

Khrushchev's Russia by Edward Crankshaw (£3.00)Publisher: Pelican — 1963Binding: Paperback Condition: Good. Pages gently age-tanned. Fragile.Description: From the cover: “This book deals neither with the Russia of the tourist, nor with that much discussed enigma, the Russia of the conference room. There is a third country. Khrushchev’s Russia, too seldom seen for what it is, too often confused with the mask it wears in the world arena. The author does not discuss Russian foreign policy or (except in a brief account of the war and of the re-shuffling after Stalin’s death) Russian history. He is concerned with the material progress and internal aims that have established themselves under Khrushchev, with the targets set to bring the country level with America in both per capita and total production, with Khrushchev the man (whom the author sees primarily as a superb practical administrator), with the new young Russians and their mental climate, and with the inside story of the Pasternak affair, of which he gives a fascinating account. The author gives a fascinating account of the Pasternak affair, and for this new edition he has added a chapter to bring the book completely up to date.”Tags: self-government democratization soviet-yugoslav communist-front teachers union czechoslovakia anti-communist inter-american confederation berry chaban-delmas organizations bungei-shunju international stabilization mexico-russo anti-fascist brasilei-ros intelligence nationalists israeli-arab mikhailovich trabajadores independence association aufklaerung diaz-verson gordeytchik afghanistan dzerzhinsky switzerland sovestskaya intercambio cooperation stepanovich directorate declaration gopalaswamy fundamentos committees industrial assistance abderrahim liberation betancourt eisenhower estenssoro federation indonesian indo-china
