Fighting Troops of the Austro-Hungarian Army 1868-1914 by James Lucas (£51.00)Publisher: Tunbridge Wells: Spellmount Limited — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0946771049]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a short, closed and tape reinforced, tear to the bottom corner of the lower panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “More than seventy years ago the armies of the Austro-Hungarian Empire — the most colourful soldiers in Europe — went into the First World War. Four years later that war had ended, the Empire had broken up and the armies had disappeared from the military scene.

This book, the result of more than ten years of research, revives in print and picture the splendour of the Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery units of the Habsburg Empire from 1868, the period of the great reform, to 1914, the outbreak of the First World War. This is the first comprehensive work in the English language on the subject.

But this is more than just a catalogue of regiments, although there is a brief history of each of them. In the pages of this book will be found uniform details, the organisation and establishments of each of the combatant Arms of Service together with regimental distinctions, music and medals.

The nature of this unique, tripartite Force is explained, the methods by which men, officers and horses were obtained are detailed and a brief history given of the concept of almost feudal loyalty to the Emperor.

The brilliance of the uniforms has been captured in reproductions of the paintings of Austria’s most specialist military artists and their work has been supplemented by a great number of contemporary monochrome photographs.”

Richard Simkin's Uniforms of the British Army: Infantry, Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers and Other Corps by W. Y. Carman (£31.00)Publisher: Exeter: Webb and Bower — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0863500315]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: 1st Foot Guards (Grenadier Guards), 1912. Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Colour Drawings;

From the cover: “Richard Simkin’s illustrations of British Army uniforms up to the First World War are well known both for their high quality and for their value to collectors, model-makers and military historians.

To follow his first volume of uniforms of the cavalry regiments, W. Y. Carman has now extended the collection to cover the infantry regiments, including the Gentlemen-at-Arms, the Royal Company of Archers (Scotland), the Foot Guards, the Infantry of the Line, the Royal Artillery, the Royal Engineers (including the Royal Military Artificers and the Sappers and Miners), the Army Service Corps.

Although Simkin’s illustrations are not available for all of the 109 infantry regiments before 1881, a brief outline of each regiment is given which includes changes of title extended to cover the Army of today so that the modern soldier may trace his ‘ancestors’. The text of uniform changes is in special sections, such as that of Highland and Lowland regiments, rifle corps, fusiliers and light infantry, while that on infantry is broken down to include musicians, pioneers and other groups.

Richard Simkin, born in 1850, was a soldier in a London Volunteer regiment before attending art schools in Kensington and Heatherley. He married in 1880 and lived in Aldershot for six years before moving to Herne Bay where he died in 1926, aged seventy-five.”

The Bomber Command Handbook 1939-1945 by Jonathan Falconer (£29.00)Publisher: Sutton Publishing — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0750918195]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the dust wrapper a little rubbed otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Jacket illustration: The crew of 50 Squadron's Lancaster III, ED810 'Z-Zebra' prepare to board before a night raid in Spring 1943. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Night after night through six long years of war RAF Bomber Command’s squadrons pounded away at the cities of Nazi Germany in a determined effort to bring the Third Reich to its knees. Pitted against Bomber Harris’s aircrews and aircraft were some of the most effective and deadly defences the world has ever seen. For Bomber Command to launch a ‘maximum effort’ raid on the Ruhr by night, or a low-level strike on an enemy target in occupied Europe by day, a huge amount of planning was involved.

Why, when and where were the bomber airfields built? Who decided the strategic bombing policy? How was the overall command structure organised, from the Air Council down to individual bomber squadron level? How did the RAF train its bomber crews? What aircraft did they fly and what weapons did they use? Who were their commanders and who were the men that made up the rank and file of the Command? How was a raid planned and, once it was launched, what happened? What aids did crews use to navigate to the target and evade enemy defences? What kinds of uniform and flying kit did they wear? What awards and medals were they eligible to receive? These questions and many more are answered in the most comprehensive review yet of Bomber Command’s organisation and operations in the Second World War.

The legacy of Bomber Command in the 1990s is revealed in a detailed listing of museums and memorials nationwide. A series of comprehensive appendices list all RAF bomber airfields, their user squadrons, aircraft and commanding officers, operational statistics and a detailed war diary.

The Bomber Command Handbook is fully illustrated with 200 archive photographs and is an indispensable addition to the reference bookshelves of all who have an interest in the RAF and its controversial bomber offensive during the Second World War.”

The uniform section deals with the diverse uniforms as worn by the various Contingents of the German Armies from 1856 through the new Field Uniform adopted for use by all troops in 1915. Illustrated are insignia of grade, weapon proficiency; helmets and shakos, body armour, swords, bayonets and various items of accoutrements.

Modern Warfare 1851-Present by H. W. [Hannsjoachim Wolfgang] Koch (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241282]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a diagonal crease to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Colour Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: “The third and final volume of the trilogy beginning with Medieval Warfare, and continuing with The Rise of Modern Warfare, is Modern Warfare 1815-Present by H W Koch. Medieval Warfare covered the development of weapons, strategy and tactics from the Fall of the Roman Empire to the Thirty Years’ War. The second volume, The Rise of Modern Warfare, covered the period from the end of the Thirty Years’ War in 1648 to the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. This volume carries the story forward from the Battle of Waterloo and the Congress of Vienna in 1815, through the development of heavy artillery, rapid-fire weapons, such as the machine gun, and other advances of the nineteenth century which presaged the wars of attrition such as World War I through World War II to the present day.

The year-long siege of Sebastopol during the Crimean War and the Siege of Vicksburg during the American Civil War, as well as the Virginia campaigns of Robert E Lee, were precursors of modern total warfare to a far greater extent than Britain’s easy colonial victories in India and Africa fought during the same period. The rapid victories of the Prussian armies of von Moltke over Austria at Koniggratz in 1866 and the French at Sedan in 1870 were the results of a modern massed army fighting against traditional professional armies not greatly advanced from their eighteenth century counterparts. The introduction of the needle gun, the Maxim gun and the Lee-Enfield rifle, combined with the evolution of the tank as a replacement for armoured cavalry were developments bound to change the nature of warfare in the twentieth century.

The war of attrition fought by Britain in South Africa, including the long sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking, as well as the six-month long siege of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War were portents of a new age in warfare for the warlords of Europe who were to launch World War I. They hoped for a war that would end in weeks. Millions of combatants and civilians alike were slaughtered in the four-year-long war of attrition in Europe between 1914 and 1918. The introduction of aerial warfare and naval blockades, which could starve a nation into submission, made twentieth century warfare unlike any previously encountered. By the time of World War II, whole nations, not merely their armies, found themselves locked in deadly combat for years until one side was worn down into helpless impotence. No one in Europe could escape the effect of the total war that was waged from 1939 to 1945.

The horrendous results of the holocaust which caused the deaths of tens of millions altered the character of warfare once again after World War II. The entire progression from “wars of gentlemen” through total war to the post-1945 age of limited war, including Korea, Algeria and Vietnam, as well as the four wars in the Middle East is described. The limited wars of the post-1945 period were perhaps the precursors of a new, even more terrible form of total conflict should a third world war ever occur.

Illustrated by hundreds of contemporary paintings, action photographs in both color and monochrome, and replete with technical drawings, maps and cutaway illustrations of the relevant weapons as well as special drawings of the uniforms of the period. Modern Warfare should become a classic and essential reading in the library of anyone interested in modern militarv historv.”

Napoleon's Soldiers: The Grand Armee of 1807 As Depicted in the Paintings of the Otto Manuscript by Guy C. Dempsey (£14.50)Publisher: London: Arms & Armour Press — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1854092421]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates;

From the cover: “The paintings in this handsome book represent one of the premier original sources available today for the study of Napoleonic military uniforms.

Taken from the Otto Manuscript, these watercolours afford a unique window on history that brings Napoleonic soldiers and uniforms into view in a way almost unprecedented for a pre-photographic era. Rather than stylised prints or lifeless salon artwork created long after the fact, these are the precise, vibrant record of an amateur artist’s first-hand observations, imbued with a spectacular intimacy as a result of the artist’s talent for faithfully reproducing even small details of dress and equipment.

Astonishingly, these priceless images have been virtually inaccessible to the public from the moment the paint dried. After first coming to modern notice when they were acquired earlier this century by Albert Depreaux, a French historian, they were copied during the Second World War, before the originals were sold to Anne S. K. Brown. They now reside in the collection that bears her name, at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.

Never before reproduced in book form, the entire set of 98 gouache illustrations now forms the centrepiece of this illustrated commentary of the Otto Manuscript (so-called because it is said to have once been the property of a certain Major Otto of Baden). Guy Dempsey offers a critical assessment of the manuscript, thereby confirming its strength as a primary source of research information, before discussing each painting and comparing the information it provides with data available from other sources.

These delightful images are excellent works of art in themselves, but their historical significance makes it remarkable that they have remained unpublished for so long. Historians and students of warfare, military uniform and the Napoleonic era will join modellers, wargamers and re-enactment groups in welcoming the publication of this important sourcework; indeed, the book will undoubtedly become a core element of many military history libraries.”

Dressed to Kill: Sex, Power & Clothes by Colin McDowell (£14.00)Publisher: Hutchinson — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0091744644]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Clothes talk — often more clearly than words. And like words, they often have a hidden meaning. Clothes provide a smoke screen as well as a declaration. We use them to give us confidence, hide our inadequacies and project our image. We can get away with murder as long as we are dressed for the part. A judge, secure in gown and wig, can make pronouncements that would he laughed out of court were he wearing a T-shirt and shorts.

Clothes perpetuate power, from military uniforms to city suits. They accentuate sexual stereotypes, from Nell Gwynne to Madonna. But they can also he used to smash the stereotype — men now wear earrings and ‘feminine’ colours; women are at ease in leather jackets and ‘Doc Martens’. Designer labels and logos define status and aspiration but anti-fashion is an increasingly potent street influence. Clothes are the outward show of our innermost attitudes.

In this trailblazing and uncompromising hook, Colin McDowell takes a provocative and radical look at the tyrannies and taboos of fashion, and shows how others see us and how we see ourselves.”

The authors, acclaimed commentators on Northern Ireland, address the tough questions: how to make the police representative of Northern Ireland’s population, in national allegiance, religious origin, and gender; how to reconcile the need for ‘downsizing’ with the need for new recruits; how to deal with symbolically divisive titles, uniforms and working environments; how to combine decentralisation, democratic accountability and operational autonomy; and how to demilitarise policing. The oldest of these men is 109, the youngest 104. In their own words they describe the extraordinary changes that have occurred during their lifetimes. Born in the reign of Queen Victoria, all have lived as adults through the Depression, the Second World War and the Millennium. But for these men, the Great War was the defining period of their lives. Some of them, mere boys at the outbreak, lied about their ages to join up. They saw action in the trenches, at sea and in the fledgling air services.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Commando Extraordinary by Charles Foley (£9.50)Publisher: Poole: Arms & Armour Press — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0853688249]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “Otto Skorzeny, Chief of Germany’s Special Troops, became world famous overnight when, with a daring glider-borne attack, he rescued Mussolini from the mountain prison of Gran Sasso. Fearless and resourceful, his many subsequent exploits include the kidnapping of the Hungarian Regent’s son — wrapped in a carpet — and the infiltration of troops disguised in American uniforms behind Allied lines during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.

This is the true story, based on personal interviews with the author, of one of the legendary characters of World War Two — and one of the half-dozen pioneers of special forces. On the wings of his first, spectacular success, Skorzeny soared over the heads of his contemporaries into Hitler’s approval. By the time Skorzeny became head of Germany’s special forces, the war was as good as lost; but he was bent upon any risk to win it. Again and again, the darkness gathering around the failing Reich was lit by a flash that revealed the mark of Skorzeny’s handiwork — improbability.

Brought to trial at Nuremberg, he was denounced by the Allied Chief Prosecutor as "the most dangerous man in Europe". On the testimony of Allied officers, he was acquitted. Then, following his release, the Russians made two attempts to carry him off to Moscow, as part of the “talent collecting” operations that had netted them some of Germany’s top atomic and rocket scientists.

This classic account of Otto Skorzeny’s dramatic career tells one of the great stories of World War Two with all the verve and excitement of a first-rate thriller. Major-General Sir Robert Laycock’s foreword to the book, written in the 1950s, places the subject of this book in its overall historical context and provides a perceptive insight into the motives behind the formation and uses of Special Forces.”

Unscathed: Escape from Sierra Leone by Philip Ashby (£9.50)Publisher: Macmillan — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0333989201]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges with a small nick at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “On 6 May 2000 Major Phil Ashby’s mission as a UN Peacekeeper in war-ravaged Sierra Leone was brought to a violent end. The notorious rebel soldiers he had worked so hard to disarm restarted the country’s civil war, and their first act was to turn on the UN’s representatives, torturing and butchering a number of his colleagues and taking over 500 hostages. Ashby and three other Western soldiers found themselves cut off in a small compound in hostile territory, surrounded by rebels who taunted them by throwing the blood-stained uniforms of fellow UN workers over the walls. After four days of physical and psychological bombardment, Ashby took the decision to risk being killed trying to escape rather than be taken alive. So at 2.45 a.m. the next morning, faces blacked with charcoal, his team went over the wall. They were surrounded by rebel troops and outnumbered by at least twenty to one. They were also unarmed. Their chances of escaping alive were very slim. But despite trekking day and night for almost a week without food or water, Ashby somehow found the strength and the courage to lead his colleagues on a daring, dramatic and heart-stopping race to freedom through the hostile jungle. He was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for his actions.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Black boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 266 pages.
