The Most Beautiful Villages of France by Dominique Reperant (£28.50)Publisher: Thames & Hudson — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0500541620]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: Front: A view from the castle of the medieval streets of Turenne. Back: The village of Penne, built beneath a rock, is one of the most breathtaking sights in the gorge of Aveyron. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Plans;

From the cover: “Here is a visual celebration of France’s most beautiful and perfectly preserved medieval villages. Spectacular colour photographs capture their regional ambience and special character, while detailed texts explain the foundation of each village and the growth of the community.

The demands of defence and trade intertwine, from the walled bastides of the Southwest with their great market squares, to the hill-top refuges of the Mediterranean, precariously perched and turned towards the sun. Each village is a harmonious marriage of architecture and landscape: the ancient timber buildings of Saint-Veran are surrounded by alpine forests; the startlingly rosy village of Collanges-la-Rouge is named after the local red sandstone of which it is made. Here too are Mont-Saint-Michel, Vezelay and Conques, where settlements cluster around majestic monuments from the Middle Ages.

Complementing the selection of villages is a list of nearby hotels and restaurants. An extended list of protected villages will prove a useful guide for travellers to France and for all those with an interest in the preservation of architectural heritage.”

From the Ends of the Earth: Passionate Plant Collectors Remembered in a Cornish Garden by Christian Lamb (£19.00)Publisher: Bene Factum Publishers — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 1903071089]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the half-title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Colour Drawings;

From the cover: “What risks did the early plant collectors take to bring us the plants we know and love? Who found what and where? And how similar are their finds to the plants we grow today? Christian Lamb has been to extraordinary lengths to find out, as we soon discover in From the Ends of the Earth.

This lively and richly-illustrated book is all about the special plants that Christian grows in her small garden in Cornwall, which she calls her ‘Living Plant Museum’. The plants are mostly chosen because she likes them, but also for their fascinating and colourful history. Christian tells us which collectors found her treasures — and the amazing challenges they faced bringing them back to our shores — with many quotes from diaries and personal writings which bring her hero plantaholics to life. She has dug deep into the Linnean, Kew, British, Royal Horticultural and Natural History Libraries to unearth all kinds of new or little-known facts.

Christian also gaily recounts her own intrepid adventures following in the footsteps of the early collectors; around New Zealand in the wake of Joseph Banks, up the Yangtze after Robert Fortune, to North, South and Central America in the paths of Lewis and Clark, the Lobb brothers and others — all the more inspiring since Christian is a spry octogenarian, who might by now have been expected to have hung up her spade.”

Extraordinary Railway Journeys by Tom Savio & Anthony Lambert (£14.50)Publisher: Ted Smart — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1843309335]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “What makes a rail tour extraordinary? Is it the countryside, unique people and places along the way, a colourful or turbulent history, select carriage interiors and the ultimate in comfort, or the noble patina bestowed by a succession of distinguished passengers?

The answer is all that and more, and each of the 24 journeys in this book contains liberal doses of these magic ingredients. One common factor unites them: the romance and allure of this incomparable mode of travel, which grants modern-day explorers an increasingly rare commodity — time. On a train one has time to absorb the passing scenery, and an opportunity to socialize with other travellers or spend reflective moments in solitude.

Stories about trains as diverse as Pakistan’s Bolan Mail and Australia’s Savannahlander, the Cornish Riviera Express and the California Zephyr convey the authors’ passion for the lines, locomotives and carriages, and their deep respect for the men who planned and built them, often under harrowing circumstances. Hand-drawn maps, evocative images and the captivating first-hand narrative of knowledgeable travel and railway writers combine to present unique experiences that carry readers from the Arctic Circle to the heat of India. Extraordinary Railway Journeys is an entertaining collection of adventures, all of which can be re-enacted today (contact details and booking information are listed at the back of the book).”

Ram Ram India: Notes from a Ride in the Subcontinent by Alex Thomson & Nick Rossiter (£13.00)Publisher: Collins — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002178265]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Alex Thomson and Nick Rossiter set off to cycle from Kashmir to the southern tip of India with a lack of preparation that would reassure the most absent-minded city dweller. They made their way through the Himalayan passes with no introductions, no sleeping bags, and very little initiative. They were not even terribly good cyclists.

It was hardly surprising, therefore, that their tangles with Indian bureaucracy often reached Gothic dimensions; that their encounters with Indian wildlife smacked more of Pythonesque hysteria than of the thrill of the safari; and that their meetings with Indians and British ex-patriates had the beauty and surprise that comes to true travellers unexpectedly, out of a clear sky, rather than from the shadow of the Raj.

It is the humour in their journey, and in their account of it, that readers will find so refreshing. They will follow the gradual revelation of a friendship between two ill-matched companions whose tolerance of each other and of their circumstances brings with it, as if by accident, as clear an illumination of India and her people as we have been lucky enough to see in print for some time.”

The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Source Book by Laura O'Hare (£13.00)Publisher: Contemporary Books — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0737305533]Condition: Near Fine.Description: From the cover: “Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints. It is classified as a functional disorder because it can be neither detected through standard medical testing nor linked to any specific structural or biochemical cause. Therefore, IBS is diagnosed only through the presence of symptoms such as pain and cramps, gas and bloating, diarrhoea, or constipation. Such symptoms can be extremely debilitating, making IBS a leading cause of worker absenteeism, second only to the common cold. Irritable bowel syndrome is also referred to as spastic colon, mucous colitis, spastic colitis, nervous stomach, or irritable colon. Although it is diagnosed most frequently in women from early adulthood to midlife, anyone can have IBS, including children. All sufferers seem to experience a common frustration because symptoms are frequently embarrassing and seem to arise without warning. Moreover, the search for a solution can be an anxious, disheartening experience that concludes with a vague diagnosis and a trial-and-error approach to treatment. In The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Sourcebook, you will learn: About the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract; How the symptoms of IBS are diagnosed and misdiagnosed; How to identify your own dietary and environmental triggers for IBS, including food allergies and food sensitivity; How to manage IBS triggers through food restriction plans and changes in your “eating lifestyle”; How to identify and manage the stress and depression that can also trigger IBS; The link between IBS and other conditions, such as fibromyalgia, nonulcer dyspepsia, acute and bacterial gastroenteritis, and globus hystericus; The role that alcohol abuse or dependence plays in the syndrome; Alternative therapies, including herbal medicine, meditation, acupuncture, biofeedback, hypnosis, and creative visualization.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 166 pages. Egypt's Making: The Origins of Ancient Egypt, 5000-2000 B.C. by Michael Rice (£12.50)Publisher: Guild Publishing — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Contains a chronology of events. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Egypt is not one but many: the Egypt of the pyramids, of colossal statues, of strange animals and gods. It is a distant and alien place. But there is an Egypt that is more familiar, a world of common humanity, littered with children’s toys and games, with cosmetics, ornaments, and jewels, that is busy with the everyday transactions of ordinary life. Like all succeeding generations the ancient Egyptians argued and played games, loved, worked, and engaged in labour disputes. And yet there is something unique about Egypt — and it is this quality which Michael Rice celebrates in this book.

His concern is with what ‘made’ Ancient Egypt. To find out, he looks back into the earliest recorded period of Egypt’s past, tracing the story through the Predynastic period and forward into the early Dynastic Period and the Old Kingdom. He considers Egypt in its broad context, as a land which attracted to it intrepid travellers and traders, bringing influences from far away into the Valley, from the distant shores of the Arabian Gulf and beyond. Egypt’s was a culture of energy and dynamism, qualities not often apparent in dry museum presentations of Ancient Egypt-Trie underlying sense of Egypt’s self is often overwhelmed by its supreme productivity, the cascade of artefacts which now swamp the collections of the world. On the basis of thirty years’ experience of Egypt and the Middle East, Michael Rice goes beyond the artefacts themselves to explain their meaning, and to understand the lives of the Kings, citizens, and craftsmen who were involved in their creation.”

World Without Mercy by Rene Lecler (£12.50)Publisher: Werner Laurie — 1954Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good - in Good DJ. Unlaminated DJ a little edgeworn and faded with loss at head and tail of spine.Description: Illustrated with B&W photographs and a fold-out map to the rear endpapers. Not until the nineteenth century did civilised men re-discover the lost world of the Sahara. Lone travellers like Caille, Clapperton, Barth and Duveyrier whose courage bordered on folly; soldiers like Flatters, Lamy and Laperrine; men with a mission like the saintly Father de Foucauld pitted themselves not only against the desert but against the violence of unknown tribes. They searched for the key to half-forgotten legends and the answer to scientific riddles and in the space of a century, they bridged the great hiatus which had long separated the white from the black world. With these explorers, scientists and conquerors Rene Lecler invites you to relive this dramatic, little-known saga of modern exploration.Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". 223 pages. Coming Out of the Kitchen: Women Beyond the Home by Una A. Robertson (£11.50)Publisher: Sutton Publishing — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0750919930]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Slight ruffling at the head of the spine to the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Until relatively recently it was generally assumed that marriage was the only career for a woman, after which she was confined to the home, immersed in her domestic duties. Achievement in all spheres was, it was supposed, the preserve of men only. In fact, as this new book clearly reveals, there were numerous women who, with minimal education, little financial independence and only basic domestic skills, pursued active and highly successful roles in the world outside the home. Well illustrated and beautifully presented, Coming Out of the Kitchen is the perfect celebration of three centuries of women's achievement, redressing the balance with more traditional history and scuppering for good the notion that the role of women began and ended with marriage. It will be essential reading for women, and men, everywhere.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Red boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 216 pages. [ISBN: 0002240955]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tannned, heavier so at the top edge. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “One dark night in an isolated house in the heart of rural England, four people are brutally murdered — an attack involving rape, mutilation and the utmost bestiality. Local reporter Janis Sanderson is convinced that Ronnie Keegan, the recently sacked odd-job man, is behind the atrocity. But the police, who resent the intrusion of the sensationalist press, have other ideas. They suspect a band of trouble-making travellers and are happy to dismiss her theory as soon as Keegan is found to have an apparently rock-solid alibi: he is in prison. Unwilling to drop the potentially explosive story, Janis presses on with her own investigation. Faced with police hostility, she draws on the support of some friends in high places: Professor Hilary Swale, a celebrated TV psychiatrist, and Donald Crabbe, an MP and publishing tycoon, who is prepared to champion her cause at the highest levels — in exchange for the exclusive rights to the story of the House of Horror murders. As the search for the truth seems to be abandoned in the growing feud between the police and the media, Janis follows a winding trail — to Strangeways, where she becomes dangerously fascinated by Keegan’s manipulative mind; and to the homes of his lowlife associates, where she is forced to suffer for herself some of the horrors of life on the lowest rung. It is an experience that could leave her own life in ruins…”Notes: Jacket designed by Joe Partridge. Size: 9½" x 6¼". Black boards with Silver titling to the Spine. 333 pages. Mr Harty's Grand Tour by Russell Harty (£11.50)Publisher: Century — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 071261849X]Condition: Very Good+ - in Very Good+ DJ.Description: From the cover: “Russell Harty travels very much as a man of the twentieth century — by motor car, high-speed train, boat and aeroplane. This unique journey starts at Dover and wanders through the Low Countries; a rain-soaked day on the battlefield of Waterloo with the present Marquis of Anglesey, looking for the tomb of his great great grandfather’s leg; lunch at the EEC with Barbara Castle; the new sights and old smells of Paris; the silken wealth of Lyons — and so to Germany and ‘Checkpoint Charlie’. Mr Harty met Sting in Perugia and the Pope in Rome. The dynamic of the journey gathers its final force in the hot and energetic city of Naples — the looming presence of Vesuvius, the lingering influence of Emma Hamilton, the English garden at Caserta, and, on the last intoxicating night of the Grand Tour, the primitive and explosive Festival of Santa Maria del Cannine. In this personal record of a journey, there is much to observe in the manners and customs of our European neighbours — the majestic and the domestic, the grand and the gossipy, the touching and the exotic, the gentle and the generous.”Notes: Jacket designed by Jane Lake Birt. The Return of Halley's Comet by Patrick Moore & John Mason (£11.50)Publisher: Patrick Stephens — 1984Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 085059667X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is lightly pulled at the head of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight with the last gather unopened at the bottom edge. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Astrological Charts; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Despite its lack of size and the fact that it is only visible from the Earth about once every 76 years, Halley’s Comet has always been a most popular phenomenon with star-gazers. It has been present at some very important events in world affairs and, as comets were often regarded as bringers of ill fortune, it has been blamed for some of them.

It is thought that comets are composed of some of the most primitive matter in the universe. The so-called ‘dirty ice’ which forms the nucleus is tremendously interesting because it could provide useful clues as to the origins of the solar system. What is more, since comets are inveterate long-distance travellers and are subject to the influences of many planets, it is possible, from a systematic study of their orbits, to gain new information about the way astronomical bodies behave.

Why should Halley’s Comet in particular be the centre of so much interest? It is a direct result of its regular and quite frequent returns to the vicinity of Earth. The next return will be in 1985/6 when the comet will once again be a naked-eye object in the night sky. It is hoped that not only will it be closely observed from the Earth but that space probes will be despatched to examine the comet from close quarters and provide an unprecedented account of what it is really like.

In this book Patrick Moore and John Mason set out not only to recount the history of Halley’s Comet but to give the reader the most up to date account of comets and what we know about them. They also describe in great detail the arrangements which have been made for the return of Halley’s Comet and suggest ways in which the interested observer can help the investigation.”

Great British Journeys by Nicholas Crane (£10.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0297844563]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with resultant slight wear to the dust wrapper and a small nick to the tail of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Who discovered Britain? We are familiar with the image of adventurers setting out to discover distant lands, but who explored our own islands? In Great British Journeys, Nicholas Crane follows in the footsteps of eight early travellers as they cross the length and breadth of Britain, revealing the country as it has never been seen before.

From Gerald of Wales’ twelfth-century recruitment drive for the Crusades, to H. V. Morton’s adventures of 1927 in his bull-nosed Morris, each of the eight had their own mission and faced their own challenges. John Leland, Henry VIII’s famous chronicler, was sent mad by his attempt to record the landscape in writing; Celia Fiennes rode out in 1698 aiming to be the first person to visit all the counties of England, when Britain was in the grips of a ‘Little Ice Age’. Pennant explored the wilds of Scotland on foot and by boat, caught in a vicious storm in Loch Maree, while Gilpin viewed England from the relative safety of the River Wye.

All left narratives behind for others — Daniel Defoe’s A Tour Thro’ the Whole Island of Great Britain (1724-1726) provides a detailed account of trade on the eve of the Industrial Revolution, while Cobbett’s Rural Rides gives first-hand evidence on the plight of the poor of the countryside.

Their passion is evident in these tales, and so provides the inspiration behind Nicholas Crane’s latest adventure as he traces their routes across Britain, discovering wetlands and mountain ranges, beaches and cliffs and marvelling at how much has changed between their landscapes and ours, and vet how much remains the same.”

From the cover: “A book of brief quotations about travel and exploration from those who love to get off the beaten track — and those who wish they’d stayed at home.

Here you will read advice to the traveller -and reflections from travellers from many centuries: Captain Cook confidently declaring that no man will ever venture further than he has, Richard Burton musing on how to keep a wife alive in the tropics, Edward Lear being seasick crossing the Channel, and the unreliable Sir John Mandeville spinning his traveller’s tales.

Intrepid travellers such as Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Marco Polo, Lady Mary Wortley Montague, Mary Kingsley, Isabella Bird, Captain Scott and Freya Stark — all of them are here, some of them awestruck at the majesty of their surroundings and others distinctly unimpressed.

Laura Stoddart’s delicious illustrations seize on the unexpected, and make a comment on what the author doesn’t say. Her many admirers will find this wittily chosen anthology has all the charm of her Up the Garden Path..”

Wild West China: The Taming of Xinjiang by Christian Tyler (£10.50)Publisher: London: John Murray — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0719557356]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps [2];

From the cover: “Closed to the world for half a century, like a black hole in the Asian landmass, the wilderness of Xinjiang in north-west China is returning to the light. The picture it presents is both fascinating and disturbing.

Despite a savage landscape and climate, Xinjiang has a rich past: sand-buried cities, painted cave shrines, rare creatures and wonderfully preserved mummies of European appearance. Their descendants, the Uighurs, still farm the tranquil oases that ring the dreaded Taklamakan, the world’s second largest sand desert, and the Kazakh and Kirghiz herdsmen still roam the mountains. The region’s history, however, has been punctuated by violence, usually provoked by ambitious outsiders — nomad chieftains from the north, Muslim emirs from Central Asia, Russian generals or warlords from inner China.

The Chinese regard the far west as a barbarian land. Only in the 1760s did they subdue it, and even then their rule was repeatedly broken. Compared with the Russians’ conquest of Siberia, or the Americans’ trek west, China’s colonization of Xinjiang has been late and difficult. The Communists have done most to develop it, as a penal colony, as a buffer against invasion, and as a supplier of raw materials and living space for an overpopulated country. But what China sees as its property, the Uighurs regards as theft by an alien occupier. Tension has led to violence and savage reprisals.

This portrait of Xinjiang should be essential reading for travellers and for anyone interested in today’s China and the fate of minority peoples.”

Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart by Alice Walker (£9.50)Publisher: Random House — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1400061733]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Private, pleasant, library sticker to the first blank.Description: From the cover: “In Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart, Alice Walker has created a work that ranks among her finest achievements: the story of a woman’s spiritual adventure that becomes a passage through time, a quest for self, and a collision with love. Kate has always been a wanderer. A well-published author, married many times, she has lived a life rich with explorations of the natural world and the human soul. Now, at fifty-seven, she leaves her lover, Yolo, to embark on a new excursion, one that begins on the Colorado River, proceeds through the past, and flows, inexorably, into the future. As Yolo begins his own parallel voyage, Kate encounters celibates and lovers, shamans and snakes, memories of family disaster and marital discord, and emerges at a place where nothing remains but love. Told with the accessible style and deep feeling that are its author’s hallmarks, Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart is Alice Walker’s most surprising achievement.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Portugal by Martha De La Cal (£9.50)Publisher: Collins — 1988Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0004109732]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “In spite of its relatively small size, Portugal could be several different countries in one. It has a popular and attractive coast, an undiscovered, sparsely populated hinterland and modern European cities that contrast with the many typically Portuguese and medieval towns. In this comprehensive and practical guide, Martha de la Cal, who has lived and worked in Portugal for many years, gives a real insider’s view of the country and its people.

Contents include

• A fascinating and vivid account of Portugal’s history, art and architecture and also a revealing look at Portugal today.

• The gazetteer covers the whole country in detail and in doing so opens up such previously ignored areas as the beautiful and mountainous north and the historic central region of Estremadura.

• Personal recommendations throughout for hotels, including pousadas, to suit all budgets and for restaurants that serve local and regional specialities and authentic Portuguese food.

• Useful advice on such matters as language, customs and courtesies, transport, shopping and handicrafts, plus many more.”

The English Country Inn by Garry Hogg (£9.50)Publisher: B. T. Batsford — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0713428554]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper. Price Clipped. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “A country inn could have been a haunt of highwaymen, whether in Wiltshire or Essex; could have been notorious for cock-fighting, whether in Hertfordshire or Yorkshire; could have been frequented by smugglers, whether in Devon or Kent; could have sheltered fleeing kings or pretenders, whether in Hampshire or Dorset; could have been originally the guest house of an abbey, whether in Berkshire or Sussex. But, be it half-timbered or tile-hung, of granite or of limestone, the inn is as necessary a feature of the rural scene as the parish church or the village green.

Carry Hogg set out to capture the essentials of this unique institution. From thousands of inns he picked out the very best (some two hundred in all) and revisited every one of them especially for this book. Conversations with landlords and interested customers enhanced his fascinating and informative account of their history, their beauties, their curiosities and associations. That the inns are particularly photogenic is proved by the 46 admirable photographs, most of which were taken expressly to appear here.”
