The Piercebridge Formula: A Dramatic New View of Roman History by Raymond Selkirk (£88.00)Publisher: Patrick Stephens — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0850596211]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine and slightly onto the panels of the dust wrapper. Upper board slightly dust-marked. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Though deceptively simple, the Piercebridge Formula will revolutionise our view of Roman Britain. Its implications are destined to influence archaeologists for many years to come. For what freelance pilot turned amateur archaeologist Raymond Selkirk has discovered is that the Roman Conquest of Britain was carried out by water transport and not by road as has been commonly supposed. His theory was proved at Piercebridge, on the River Tees, where, by a combination of brilliant aerial surveys and detective work on the ground, he found the archetypal water-supplied Roman site. For some time he had strongly suspected that waterways must be the answer, for how could ox-carts have travelled on Roman roads which often climbed gradients which would daunt a modern saloon car? Also, how could the oxen have carried any load at all when they would have needed all their strength merely to pull carts laden with fodder for themselves?

At Piercebridge it became clear that where a Roman road crosses a river, there is an excellent chance of finding a Roman site. This formula was then applied to other areas… and it worked! At one time the finding of an unknown site was a rarity but Selkirk and his team of enthusiasts produced remarkable results in a very short time. Yet the full effects of the Piercebridge Formula are only just starting to be felt, for what is true of Britain must logically apply to the whole Roman Empire. The prospects for further exploration are therefore tremendous and the author goes to great lengths to enlist the aid of his readers, both at home and abroad, in following up leads which will help to uncover further remains. Suspected sites are all named with exact locations and map references so that those with sufficient enthusiasm may continue this fascinating quest. The storm which this book will cause in archaeological circles has barely started, the search has only just begun.”

The Oil Engine Manual by D. S. D. [Denys Stephen Dodsley] Williams (£69.00)Publisher: Temple Press — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with nicks at the spine ends and a short, triangular, crease and tear to the foot of the upper panel. Tanning to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: 6th edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1939] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Graphs [1 Fold-Out]; Diagrams; Tables; Period Advertisements;

From the cover: “The first edition of this Manual appeared some 16 years ago and later editions were widely used as books of instruction during the Second World War. Considerable developments in engine design and a variety of applications took place during the period covered by the preceding five editions. In more recent years, however, the pace has, far from slackening, actually accelerated, so that the fundamental background of oil engine design has undergone considerable changes. The number of manufacturers has varied, whilst their power ranges have been made more extensive, even though the actual number of engine models has decreased somewhat through rationalization.

This new edition of “The Oil Engine” Manual has been very largely rewritten to cover changes occurring during the past five years. It is now fully up-to-date, as is only possible when the work is produced in the office of a journal dealing with the subject on a full time and highly specialized basis.

Chapters in the first part of the Manual give the background for engine design (of various forms) for all duties other than marine applications. In the second part, leading details are given of all the current makes of oil engine constructed in the United Kingdom, again for all purposes other than ship and boat duties. The third and final part is a technical appendix, which will be found useful, not only for those concerned with engine manufacture, but for those engaged in the use of such prime movers. Students also will find the whole book of permanent value to them in their work relating to this type of heat engine.”

Handley Page Aircraft Since 1907 Revised by Derek N. James by C. H. [Christopher Henry] Barnes (£56.00)Publisher: London: Putnam — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851778038]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1976] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “First heard in aviation a few years before the 1914-18 war, the name of Handley Page became one to conjure with when strategic bombing of Rhineland armament factories began in 1917 as a counter-blow to the German submarine blockade of the British Isles. After the war an O/400 and a V/1500 were the first two aircraft to fly all the way from England to India, and soon afterwards Handley Page pioneered commercial air transport services across the English Channel and in China, India and South Africa.

A new generation of twin- and four-engined monoplane bombers — Hampden and Halifax — emerged to challenge Hitler’s ambition between 1935 and 1945, giving rise in turn to the Hastings and Hermes transports of the 1950s; finally the nuclear age produced the Victor transonic bomber, which remains in service as the RAF’s long-range flight refuelling tanker A new line of smaller civil transports began with the acquisition in 1948 of Miles Aircraft Ltd and from the Reading factory stemmed the very successful Dart-Herald.

This book contains photographs, three-view drawings and data of every type of Handley Page aircraft built and flown, as well as many historic project drawings not previously published, and completes the author’s trilogy, which already includes Bristol Aircraft since 1910 and Shorts Aircraft since 1900 in the series.”

Principles of Agricultural Economics: Markets and Prices in Less Developed Countries by David Colman; Trevor Young; (£43.00)Publisher: Cambridge University Press — 1995Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0521336643]Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: Reprint. [First: 1989] From the cover: “This textbook addresses the main economic principles required by agricultural economists involved in rural development. The principles of ‘micro-economies’ or ‘price-theory’ are of relevance to economists everywhere, but this book reinforces the message of their relevance for rural development by explaining the theory in the specific context of the agricultural and food sectors of developing countries. Hypothetical and actual empirical illustrations drawn almost exclusively from such countries distinguish this book from other economic principles texts that draw their examples almost invariably from industrialised countries, and also from books more oriented to the issues of rural development. The first half of the book deals with the underlying principles of production, supply and demand. These are essential tools for the study and management of the agricultural sector and food markets. In the second half, supply and demand are brought together into a chapter of equilibrium and exchange. This is followed by chapters on trade and the theory of economic welfare. In the final chapter it is shown that much of the material in the earlier chapters can be combined by agricultural economists into a system for analysing and comparing the effects of alternative agricultural policies. The ability of agricultural economics to provide a consistent framework for the analysis of policy problems thus enables it to make a key contribution to rural development.”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). The Road to Prosperity: An Economic History of Finland by Edited by Jari Ojala, Jari Eloranta & Jukka Jalava (£41.00)Publisher: Helsinki: Suomaleisen Kirjallisuuden Seura — 2006Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 9517468180]Condition: Near Fine. Slight bruising to the lower corners of the boards otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “The Finnish economy is a victory over hardship, a success story with few equivalents. During the period 1860-2000 the gross domestic product grew 21-fold, while EU nations on average achieved 11-fold growth. Today, Finland is known for its competitiveness, high educational standards, negligible corruption, expertise in creating and using high technology, and successful companies, most notably Nokia. This book tells how Finland astonishingly evolved from an internationally insignificant agrarian economy to the affluent, knowledge-based, welfare society that it is now. The Road to Prosperity — An Economic History of Finland offers an overview of several centuries of economic progress — with a keen eye on negative effects of growth.” Illustrated by way of: Appendices [3]; Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Graphs; Colour Photographs; Tables;Notes: Foreword or introduction by Joel Mokyr. Very slightly ruffled edges of DJ.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Britain has a proud maritime heritage encompassing the impressive history of the Royal Navy, as well as the contribution made by civilian seafarers over the years. Yet rather than dwelling on the past, the focus of this book goes beyond the current horizon and embraces the advances that have been made in all spheres of contemporary life. Accordingly, we identified a breathtakingly diverse host of organizations and institutions, many of them international, which, through excellence in their particular spheres, continue to contribute to one common aim. That aim is to ensure that Britain remains a prosperous, outward-looking force for good in the world community, as well as a tolerant and benevolent nation which some 60 million of us are privileged to call home.”Notes: Size: 11¾" x 8½". A Horseman Through Six Reigns: The Reminiscences Of A Royal Riding Master by Horace Smith (£28.00)Publisher: Odhams Press — 1955Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper frayed and rubbed with loss at the spine ends and tips. Boards sunned at the margins. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Horace (‘Cadogan’) Smith—the man who taught the Queen to ride — is known and respected throughout what he himself calls the “Horsey” world. He has lived and worked among horses for three-quarters of a century, and has won prize after prize at major horse shows all over Britain, from the International Horse Show at Olympia downwards. As a dealer he has bought and sold nearly twelve thousand horses during his lifetime. And as a judge of horses Horace Smith has been — and still is — in great demand at all the leading shows in Britain and many in Europe and America as well.

There is a strong sense of nostalgia about his brightly written autobiography. In these pages he transports the reader back through the years to a world that is no more, picturing spacious, leisurely days that had a charm all their own.

The horse was the normal form of road transport when Mr. Smith’s career began in the last decade of Queen Victoria’s reign. He joined his father in the well-established family business of W. J. Smith Limited, Horse Dealers, when he was sixteen. And many are the fascinating stories he has to relate of the cut-throat competition in the horse trade in London at the turn of the century.”

Victorian Britain and Ireland in Colour by Janice Anderson & Reinhard Schultz (£26.00)Publisher: Carlton — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844425584]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Leans slightly otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “The Victorian age was one of expansion in many areas, none more so than that of JM travel. With the success of explorers worldwide people’s curiosity grew, and the advent of the railroad in Great Britain and Ireland, which at that time was part of the United Kingdom, meant that the general public could do their own exploring. Many parts of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales that had, at one time, seemed remote were now within relatively easy travelling distance.

This collection of unique polychrome colour photographs, which have never been seen before, captures many of the vistas that became so popular with Victorian holidaymakers -from the quaint and picturesque snapshots of Devon and Cornwall to the tranquillity of the Irish countryside via the beautiful coastline of Wales or the hustle and bustle of London, up to the broads of Norfolk and further north to the wild, heather-strewn hills and awe-inspiring lochs of Scotland.

Many of these sites are still highly popular holiday venues and with good reason, since for the most part they have been protected for historical or environmental reasons. What they share is an abundance of charm and character and, in the cases of those rural and coastal locations, a measure of, peace and tranquillity.

Accompanied by informative, and often thought-provoking captions, these pictures will transport the reader back to a time when the pace of life was, for all its new inventions, a little calmer and more leisurely. Victorian Britain & Ireland in Colour is a thoroughly engaging window on to a bygone age that will captivate readers.”

During the first two decades of aviation pioneering (c.1890 - 1910), airshipmen hugely outnumbered aeroplane pioneers. But the great innovations in heavier-than-air aircraft, the advent of two world wars, and the bad publicity brought about by a small number of horrific airship disasters, changed the picture completely. It is only proper that, before time expunges all traces of these intrepid pioneers, their exploits are placed on record.Notes: Size: 10" x 7". 174 pages. The Wirral by Alan Brack (£20.50)Publisher: Phillimore & Co. — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0850336791]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint with amendments. [First Edition: 1980] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Wirral was already an old-established administrative unit at the time of Domesday Book. This book is concerned with all those aspects of the Wirral, whether of history, architecture or landscape, that give the peninsula its individuality. Well known as a writer on the locality, Alan Brack starts with the immense advantage of having lived there nearly all his life. His book is at once scholarly, readable and entertaining. He has studiously avoided the highly romanticised view which has persisted in other accounts of the area and his opening chapter, ‘A Place Apart’, sets the tone for the whole book. There are sections on Birkenhead and Wallasey and on Bebington and Bromborough. An authoritative account of the establishment of Ellesmere Port is followed by a chapter on the Urbanised Districts of Hoylake, Neston and Heswall, on the Urbanised, Unexpected and Purpose-built villages, on the open spaces and on crossing the Mersey. The description of Port Sunlight, with its vignette of Lord Leverhulme, is especially well-informed. Human interest relieves a generally topographical approach through the appearance in the local context of the many notable men and women who have been associated with the Wirral.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Air War Korea 1950-1953 by Robert Jackson (£19.00)Publisher: Airlife — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1853108804]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with an untidy nick to the head of the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Leans. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “When eight divisions of North Korean troops slammed through the 38th Parallel on June 25, 1950, it heralded a battle for air superiority of unprecedented dimensions and unleashed a new age of aviation fighting technology. The first generation of fighting jets from the Soviet Union battled with America’s finest. Sabres and Migs fought their war high in the Asian sky while the older piston-powered warbirds with roots in WW2 battled it out around the contours of the hills below. Above all, the Air War over Korea is a story of men and courage — of World War II veterans, many of them already aces, volunteering for combat duty in the cockpit of a jet and proving their worth day after day in the stratosphere against the cream of Russia’s fighter planes. It is the story of the men who flew the United Nations’ ‘workhorses’ — the Thunderjets, Shooting Stars, Panthers, Corsairs and Skyraiders that turned North Korea into an economic desert, the B-29 crews who sacrificed themselves in MiG Alley during the first year of the war, and of the Meteor pilots of No 77 Squadron RAAF, whose first encounters with the MiG-15 proved disastrous. Robert Jackson captures the story of cold ruthless skill that turned thirty-year-old fighter aces from the piston era into jet aces of the new age.”

Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “In his new book Kevin Robertson has brought together a fascinating collection of previously unpublished facts and photographs to throw new light on the long history of the Great Western Railway. He has drawn on hitherto inaccessible sources and has chosen to illustrate and record many unusual aspects of the GWR which have been overlooked in other works devoted to this famous company.

The book covers subjects as diverse as experimental signal design, station furniture, the petrol railcar, the 1930s camping coach and even the GWR’s accident record -hitherto considered exemplary. It illustrates the stations and the staff and above all the locomotives and the roiling stock upon which the high reputation of the company depended.

Odd Corners of the GWR will be entertaining and informative reading for everyone who has a sense of railway history. It will be especially valuable for enthusiasts who are keen to learn more about the background to the success of the GWR during the great age of British railways.”

Planned Beef Production by Stephen Williams; C. David Edgar; (£18.00)Publisher: Crosby Lockwood & Son — 1966Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Ex-library with few marks. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges with a rough nearly closed tear to the leading edge of the lower panel. Heavily faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “THE production of beef cattle is complex and is becoming increasingly so. Technical changes have been applied to the once simple matter of having herds of breeding cattle in some places and yards of fattening bullocks in others. Sometimes they were on the same farm, but often there was a considerable distance between them and this was bridged by the cattle dealer and the store market. New concepts of breeding by artificial insemination led to the replacement of some dual-purpose cattle by some others. The reds and the roans became black and white, or just black; and the buffs are now making an appearance. Physical and chemical methods of dehorning have jostled with genetic advances in polling. Competition between the churn stand and the calf pen in a period of falling milk prices led to early weaning in its various guises and to the greater use of milk substitutes and the earlier feeding of concentrates. Multiple suckling, carefully supervised by expensive labour, has led to mass suckling with labour charges spread over more cattle. More recently there have been interesting developments with barley fed and battery beef with forage flowing untouched from silo to stock, a trickle of concentrates being fed on the way. The time has come for an appraisal of the multitude of methods in beef production and the many differing ideas regarding suitable breeds down to the introduction of the Charolais.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5½". Raging Bull: The Autobiography of the England Rugby Legend by Phil Vickery with Alison Kervin (£18.00)Publisher: HarperSport — 2010Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780007354214]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Raging Bull is the eagerly-awaited autobiography of Phil Vickery, the iconic tight-head prop’s own incredible story and the tale of a true legend of rugby Union.

Vickery is a warrior — a tough, no-nonsense player who is as fearless arid uncompromising on the pitch as he is a great raconteur off it. His career spans amateurism and professionalism, and the journey starts in the Cornish countryside and ends in two World Cup finals and two tours with the British and Irish Lions.

Vickery is a hugely passionate player. He sports a tattoo which announces ‘I’ll fight you to the death’, and has overcome serious injuries (including eight operations) in a career of stunning highs and devastating lows. He plays his sport in the best traditions of rugby and he is a story-teller par excellence.

Raging Bull will transport readers to the England front row in a Six Nations clash, to the changing room in a Lions Test, and to the bars of many an amateur rugby club. It will remind fans what rugby is really all about — the fun and camaraderie, and the intensity and commitment, as the former herdsman turned England and Lions star takes you to the heart and soul of the sport he loves.”

A Century in Oil: The “Shell” Transport and Trading Company 1897-1997 by Stephen Howarth (£16.50)Publisher: London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. The century was nearly half over when the nuclear age began and the computer revolution swept the world. Throughout the 20th century, oil has been the great enabler providing from one basic resource a rainbow range of products.

Based upon unrestricted access to company archives, A Century in Oil marks the 100th anniversary of The “Shell” Transport and Trading Company one of the parents of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group. By most measurements Shell is the largest oil enterprise in the world, and the largest organization of any kind in Europe. In a phenomenal industry, Shell could fairly claim to be a phenomenon in its own right — global in scope but always human in scale. Century in Oil tells the frank and dramatic story of a company — daring, inventive, and sometimes controversial — whose work has touched, and continues to touch, all our daily lives.”

Sicily by Peirre Sebilleau (£14.00)Publisher: Kaye & Ward — 1968Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0718201159]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper faded at the spine and onto the margins of the panels. Top edge of the dust wrapper a little rubbed. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Maps [1]; Colour frontispiece;

From the cover: “The unique geographical situation of Sicily, Italy’s “boot", so close to North Africa and to Greece, has for nearly 4,000 years made it a valuable prize for successive invaders — Carthaginians and Greeks, Romans and Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Germans, French, Spanish and British — and all the occupying powers have left their mark on this island so full of contrasts. Splendid palaces and miserable hovels; glorious views, Etna periodically in eruption, extensive cultivation, barren plains over which the sirocco blows; the Sicily loved by Pindar and Aeschylus and her native poet, Theocritus; of beautiful Greek theatres and Doric temples, fine cathedrals; the overpopulated Sicily of the Mafia, of massive ignorance and poverty and darkness, on to which Danilo Dolci has lately flashed his searing torch: all these different aspects make their appearance in Pierre Sebilleau’s notable addition to the Beaux Pays series.

However, although he does not deny the darker side, Sebilleau is too great a lover of the island, and of the complex, reserved Sicilian character, not to come down heavily on the side of the Earthly Paradise, with its superb climate, its beaches and gardens, its wonderful works of art and architecture. This is what comes across as he takes the reader on a brisk but thorough tour, landing at Palermo, the capital, round the west coast, down to the toe and Syracuse, into the interior, and back, by way of Catania and Etna, Messina and along the north coast for a more leisurely look at Palermo, before departing with the knowledge that “you love Sicily, the only and best conclusion to your tour you can reach”. Though keeping the freshness of personal experience, likes and dislikes, Sebilleau caters for all travellers’ tastes, carries lightly his considerable erudition, and distils his own enthusiasm for the “Paradise on earth”. Altogether it is a worthy text to complement the magnificent illustrations.”

Somewhere in the West Country: The History of Bristol (Whitchurch) Airport 1930-1957 by Kenneth Wakefield (£14.00)Publisher: Crécy Publishing — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0947554653]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “During the Second World War Bristol’s Whitchurch Airport became Britain’s main air gateway to the free world. Service chiefs, foreign and British diplomats, Prisoner-of-War mail ( via neutral countries), and much else, passed through the airport, as did many important people. Among the latter, to name but two, were Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the President of the USA, and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. Other famous personalities passing through included film stars Bob Hope, Edward G Robinson and Bing Crosby, in Britain to entertain American forces. But security in wartime was paramount and Whitchurch Airport was never mentioned by name. Instead, news reports about the arrival or departure of celebrities referred only to an airport somewhere in the West Country . This is the book of that airport.

Although a history of Whitchurch, other aspects of aviation in the West Country are covered, including the pre-war expansion of civil and military flying. But much of the book is about the important part played by Whitchurch in wartime, when it was occupied by British Overseas Airways Corporation, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the Air Transport Auxiliary and the Bristol Aeroplane Company. It concludes with an account of the difficult early post-war period and the events which led to the airport’s closure in 1957. This is a comprehensive history of one of Britain’s most important early airports and covers a period, seen by many, as the Golden Age of British civil aviation.”

The Iron Masters of Penns by John Horsfall (£14.00)Publisher: The Roundwood Press — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0900093293]Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Ex-library with usual marks, numerals to the spine, pocket to the pastedown, slip to the ffep, stamp to the reverse of the title page. Leans heavily. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Websters of Penns began their enterprise in the time of Marlborough and the business has proved as durable as the steel for which they were famous. Set in the background of the national history the story accelerates down the years — threaded with family problems, humour and drama often lie together, and in later years suspense is rarely absent. The tale is a true one without the cheap device of omitting the unpalatable and it depicts most of the range of human performance from inspiration and genius to utter imbecility. At the end one is left amazed that the firm still stands, but Webster and Horsfall, as it is now known, still remains — battered perhaps, but still on solid rock after two and a half centuries.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼".
