The Fleet in the First World War Volume 1: Operations of the Russian Fleet by Edited by N. B. Pavlovich (£86.00)Publisher: New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta & New York: Amerind Publishing Co. Pvt. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is a little dulled at the panels and faded at the spine. Boards and spine dulled. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Publishing date unstated, dated from references. Translation of Flot v Pervoi Mirovoi Voine published by Voennoe Izdatel’stvo, Ministry of Defence, USSR, Moscow, 1964. Illustrated by way of: Maps; Tables; Fold-Out Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “Among the many works on the First World War there has been no comprehensive account of the Russian navy’s part in that epic clash of the great powers. This gap is now filled by the present volume, which takes its place as the authoritative record of the Russian fleet’s day-by-day contribution to the war at sea from 1914 through 1917, when the revolutionary Bolshevik government took Russia out of what it saw as a purely imperialistic confrontation.

The story of the tortuously slow growth of the tsarist navy is told against the background of war preparations by Germany, France and England. We learn that through the vision and persistence of a few leaders Russia’s posture both on land, at sea and in the air at the outbreak of the war could inspire a measure of confidence.

The deeds of the Russian navy are recounted on the basis of the three theatres where it operated: the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the White Sea and adjoining coastal waters. The sections under these three heads give a year-by-year account of the fighting at sea against the background of the general progress of hostilities, particularly on the land front. The account concludes with the overthrow of the Tsar, the brief transition of Bolshevik rule, and the upheaval these developments produced in the Russian navy, which played a not inconsiderable part in hastening the process.”

William Tyndale: A Biography by David Daniell (£24.00)Publisher: Yale University Press — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0300061323]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with the gilt titling rubbed at the authors' name. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy overall. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles;

From the cover: “William Tyndale (1494-1536) was the first person to translate the Bible into English from its original Greek and Hebrew and the first to print the Bible in English, which he did in exile. Giving the laity access to the word of God outraged the clerical establishment in England: he was condemned, hunted, and eventually murdered. However, his masterly translation formed the basis of all English bibles — including the ‘King James Bible’, many of whose finest passages were taken unchanged, though unacknowledged, from Tyndale’s work.

This important book, published in the quincentenary year of his birth, is the first major biography of Tyndale in sixty years. It sets the story of his life in the intellectual and literary contexts of his immense achievement and explores his influence on the theology, literature and humanism of Renaissance and Reformation Europe.

David Daniell, editor of Tyndale’s New Testament and Tyndale’s Old Testament, eloquently describes the dramatic turns in Tyndale’s life. Born in England and educated at Oxford, Tyndale was ordained as a priest. When he decided to translate the Bible into English, he realised that it was impossible to do that work in England and moved to Germany, living in exile there and in the Low Countries while he translated and printed first the New Testament and then half of the Old Testament. These were widely circulated — and denounced — in England. Yet Tyndale continued to write from abroad, publishing polemics in defence of the principles of the English Reformation. He was seized in Antwerp, imprisoned in Vilvoorde Castle near Brussels and burnt at the stake for heresy in 1536.

Daniell discusses Tyndale’s achievement as biblical translator and expositor, analyses his writing, examines his stylistic influence on writers from Shakespeare to those of the twentieth century, and explores the reasons why he has not been more highly regarded. His book brings to life one of the great geniuses of the age.”

Elektra by SOPHOCLES (£23.00)Publisher: Faber & Faber — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0571160697]Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ. Pages deeply tanned by age at the margins otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: First British Edition. From the cover: “Ezra Pound’s translation of the Elektra of Sophocles was composed in the early months of 1949 when he was confined in St Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washingtonm, under indictment for treason. This text, and the subsequent version he made of Sophocles’ Trachiniae, and his translations from the Chinese, signalled his return to sustained composition and eventually to the resumption of his life’s work, the Cantos. The publication of Elektra in this scholarly edition, with a critical apparatus of variants and notes, is thus an important event in Pound studies. It also provides us with a highly idiomatic and actable version of a classic of Greek tragedy for the contemporary stage.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Character Steins: A Collector's Guide by Eugene V. Manusov & Mike Wald (£22.00)Publisher: Cornwall — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0845347845]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper has a tape reinforcement to the reverse of the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “This comprehensive book provides a finely illustrated guide to the field of character stein collecting. These unique figural pieces, usually not cylindrical, are modeled so that the body and lid form a caricature, a figure, or an object. The fanciful imagery of the steins is always imaginative, and sometimes comical. An eclectic variety of creations are depicted in the steins: people (monks, historic personages, military figures, mythological characters); animals (horses, lions, foxes’ heads — even a rhinoceros); and objects (skulls, sports equipment, buildings, for example).

The book thoroughly examines each of these and is arranged according to subject depicted, each chapter treating a different category. The result is an intriguing picture catalog containing over 600 illustrations of steins and stein-related items, many of which are in full color. Each illustration is accompanied by a brief description that includes the stein’s dimensions, its coloring, a translation of old German inscriptions, an explanation of what the stein represents, and the manufacturers (if known). The text also offers an extensive listing of the manufacturer’s marks that are found on many of the steins.

Several special chapters written by authorities on character steins have been included in the book: Jack G. Lowenstein writes about Beer Stein Ceramics, Ron Fox tells How Musterschutz Character Steins Were Made, and the late Dr. J. Joseph Hersh contributed an interesting chapter on The Hexagram as the Brewer’s Symbol. There are also chapters on contemporary steins and the artifacts relating to them, and a concise history of antique character drinking vessels. Since the publication of the Encyclopedia of Character Steins in 1976, old and new character stein collectors have brought forth a number of previously unknown steins. The book includes pictures of these newly discovered steins, and complements them with a fascinating section that outlines new facts that have come to light concerning the intricacies of this absorbing field of study. The chapter Musterschutz and the Elusive # Mark sheds light on the identity of the manufacturer of the popular so-called Musterschutz steins.

Collectors like Werner Sahm, Roland Henschen, and Lotti Lopez, through diligent searching, have been able to obtain copies of many original stein manufacturers’ catalogs, some pages of which show original sketches or photos of character steins. Because of this research, the authors are able to display in the Old Catalogs portion of the book some of these exciting finds from manufacturers such as Rosskopf & Gerz, Steinzeugwerke, Reinhold Hanke, Mer-kelbach & Wick, Marzi & Remy, and J. W. Remy. These catalogs facilitated the search to identify the previously unknown makers of many character steins.

In addition to these catalogs, much new information has come from researchers who have recently published their results in Prosit, the quarterly publication of Stein Collectors International. While much progress has been made in determining manufacturers, there is still much to be discovered. Answers always seem to raise new questions; new character steins that are “found” occasionally fill in known gaps, but more often seem to carry still unknown marks or styles. Gene Manusov’s and Mike Wald’s enthusiasm for the study and collection of character steins is infectious. In this highly informative work, collectors, dealers, and antique lovers will enjoy their beautiful pictures supplemented by their stimulating perceptive text.”

From the cover: “Authoritative, comprehensive and beautiful to look at, this unique encyclopaedia is the key to successful gardening. To create a garden which is both flourishing and inviting, you need technical know-how and a touch of inspiration. Larousse Gardening and Gardens provides both. The first chapter, ‘The History of the Garden’, provides an excellent starting point for the inspirational side of gardening — Islamic courtyards, medieval topiary hedges and Japanese bonsai trees all have their place in modern garden design. Chapter 2 discusses different types of garden including rockeries, water gardens and lawns. Pooling the expertise of a team of renowned horticulturalists, Larousse Gardening and Gardens also offers sound technical instruction. In Chapter 3 practical information is clearly expressed and helpfully illustrated with step-by-step drawings. This important chapter ranges in scope from a subject as broad as propagation to the specifics of clematis pruning and is a valuable action pack for the amateur gardener. An extensive A-Z of garden plants complements the previous chapter by providing detailed identification and cultivation information for individual plants. Each plant has a climatic zone rating ensuring successful plant propagation for gardeners throughout the world. Finally, biographical studies of early botanists and plant-hunters recall the very first steps in garden making and provide a fascinating concluding chapter. Complete with maps and tables for quick reference, attractive botanical drawings and spectacular colour photography, Larousse Gardening and Gardens is not only an all-round reference work but also essential reading for gardeners throughout the world.”Notes: Size: 10½" x 7¾". Japanese Naval Aces and Fighter Units in World War II by Ikuhito Hata & Yasuho Izawa (£14.50)Publisher: Shrewsbury: Airlife Publishing Ltd. — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1853101389]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “The Pacific War was an air war, yet, until now, Western readers have had little chance to learn about Japan’s naval fighter pilots and their World War II air groups. This English translation of a classic Japanese work finally lifts the cloak of anonymity that has hidden their identities from the West for so long. Within these pages the reader gains an intimate and unprecedented view of the men, their aircraft, and their victories and defeats.

Divided into three parts, the book opens with rare photos and brief descriptions of the principal Japanese naval aircraft. The second part offers concise histories of the air groups, including every carrier-and land-based fighter unit in the Imperial Navy — from the China Incident in the early 1930s to the end of the Pacific War in September 1945. Dates of organization and disbanding, key movements and action results, brief summaries of important battles, and anecdotes about leaders and aces are all provided. The third part captures Japan’s leading naval aces in photos and individual biographical sketches.

This translation — the only one available in English — is based on the revised and enlarged 1975 edition of Nihon Kaigun Sentoki-tai, the definitive work on the subject in Japan. To produce this unique record Ikuhiko Hata, an internationally known military historian, and his highly regarded researcher Yasuho Izawa spent years tracking down information and conducting interviews with surviving aces and the families of those killed in the war. Their Japanese perspective adds a significant new dimension to the annals of World War II.

Nearly 350 photographs of aces and aircraft — many new to this edition — supplement the text. Some 100 line-drawings of aircraft show unit markings and paint colours. To aid the Western reader this edition adds a section on Japanese naval terminology. Appendix tables chronicle naval fighter aces by record, pilots killed in action, pilots by training class, and major air battles. Indexes by name and unit and end maps of the entire Pacific theatre provide excellent references.”

Arabian Nights: The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night Selected by Antony Atha from the Illustrated Benares Edition by Richard F. Burton (£14.00)Publisher: London: Bracken Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0946495246]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings [16];

From the cover: “To celebrate the centenary of the publication of the first volume of Sir Richard Burton’s famous 17 volume translation of the Arabian Nights in 1885, this edition is the first of two volumes collecting together over 70 of the best known tales.

The origins of the Arabian Nights are lost in antiquity. First translated into a European language by the Frenchman Antoine Galland in the 18th century, many of the characters in the stories have become household names. Versions of Aladdin and his Lamp and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves appear in countless children’s books and are performed as pantomimes every Christmas, and the same is true of many others. But the simple fairytale element of the Arabian Nights can be exaggerated. As Burton himself said ‘viewed as a whole they are a drama of Eastern life, and a Dance of Death made sublime by faith and the highest emotions, by the certainty of expiation and the fullness of atoning equity. They form a phantasmagoria in which angels and archangels, devils and goblins, men of air, of fire, of water, naturally mingle with men of earth… All the splendour and squalor, the beauty and baseness, the glamour and grotesqueness… of Oriental life are here: it pictures the three great Arab passions, love, war and fancy; and still more, by adding Fiction to Fact the genius of the storyteller quickens the dry bones of history and revives the dead past. Truly they form one of the monuments of world literature.

To preserve the chronology of the original the stories in this edition are printed virtually in the order in which they first appeared. This first volume therefore contains that classic romp The Porter and the Three Ladies of Baghdad, the famous Hunchback’s Tale, the marvellous Voyages of Sindbad the Sailor, and that great favourite Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. In the second volume it is planned to include all the stories made famous by Galland — in particular Aladdin and his Lamp — which came in the seven Supplemental volumes in the original translation.

Throughout, the original unexpurgated version privately printed by the Burton Club has been used. This translation is marked by the extraordinary resource and felicity of expression that Burton commanded and for the last hundred years has remained the benchmark against which all other translations are measured. The anthropological notes embrace a wide field of erotic reference and abound in valuable observations based on Burton’s lifelong study and observation of the peoples of the East.

This commemorative centenary issue is illustrated with a selection of the paintings of Albert Letchford commissioned by the publisher H. S. Nichols for the first library edition. Letchford was a close friend of Sir Richard and Lady Burton, and one to whom, on the night of his death, Sir Richard presented his personal copy of The Thousand Nights and a Night. It seems therefore only fitting that these illustrations should illuminate the pages of a work which has done so much to bring to life ‘the splendour and squalor, the beauty and baseness, the glamour and grotesqueness’ of Oriental life.”

Louis XIV: The Other Side of the Sun by Prince Michael of Greece (£13.50)Publisher: Orbis Publishing — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0856135143]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Penning to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: From the cover: “Louis XIV, whose great prestige earned him the title of ‘the Sun King’, is the most famous of all the French kings. He ruled France in one of its most glorious periods, and remains to this day the supreme symbol of absolute monarchy. Now, in a brilliant new biography, Prince Michael of Greece has revealed a darker side to the Sun King. Drawing on detailed evidence from contemporary records, letters and memoirs, he explored the possibility that, underneath it all, this epitome of kingship was a shy, weak, unstable man of unexpected and intriguing complexity. Prince Michael assesses the continued and enduring influence of Cardinal Mazarin and Louis’ mother, Anne of Austria, on the little boy who came to the throne at the age of five but who learnt early on to hide his profound insecurity behind the ever more elaborate trappings of monarchy.

Here, then, is a vivid portrait of a not particularly intelligent king, secretly poring over textbooks, preferring to command sieges rather than battles because they were more convenient, whose voracious sexual appetite right into his seventies flouted the very conventions he himself tried to impose on a reluctant court at Versailles. Without simply debunking Louis, Prince Michael of Greece succeeds in presenting an iconoclastic biography which shatters many of the accepted myths about the man and his century. The result is a glimpse of the human frailties and inadequacies that lay behind the arrogance, protocol and pageantry of France’s greatest king.”

Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: First British Edition. [First Published: as Liefdes schijn-bewegingen, De Bezige Bij, 1963]

From the cover: “Trix Trumbauer’s previous boy-friend was a poet who was inadvertently locked in a butcher’s fridge over the Easter holiday and has since disappeared. Her latest is a 37-year-old businessman, whom she treats with open contempt. Trix and her brother Lex relish the tough confidence of their youth and the exclusive intimacy of brother and sister. Everyone else they despise — parents, lovers, the old, the sick, the square…

But Trix still has a place in her heart for the poet Gerard (perhaps because he is the only man ever who left before she dismissed him), and when Lex sees him one day riding by on a bicycle, they start a wild search that discovers him in a jam factory, takes in the crazily inefficient rigging of the ‘Miss Virgin’ competition, and eventually comes to a surprising end in Gerard’s grim lodgings.

Remco Campert has caught exactly the bland, cool cruelty of the young, their cheerful heartlessness, and has himself added a delightful tongue-in-cheekiness of style that defies you to take anything seriously — even the brilliance with which he has written this book.”

Omar Khayyám: A New Version Based Upon Recent Discoveries by Arthur J. [John] Arberry (£11.50)Publisher: John Murray — 1952Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. From the cover: “For almost a hundred years readers and quoters of English poetry have delighted in FitzGerald’s translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in spite of scholars pointing out how far his translations departed from the original Persian and in spite of the disputed authorship of many of the quatrains. A short time ago A. J. Arberry, Professor of Arabic at Cambridge University, examined two recently discovered manuscripts that will considerably change all previous views of Omar and his work. One was written in 658 (a. d. 1259-60) by a scribe who lived in the city where Omar was born and who selected 172 quatrains from among Omar’s writings to copy. The other, bought in 1950 by the Cambridge University Library, was written in 604 (a. d. 1207), only 75 years after the poet’s death, and its selection of Omar’s work comprises 252 quatrains.”

Rope of Ash by Shahnon Ahmad (£10.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press (Kuala Lumpur) — 1979Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0195804414]Condition: Very Good. Slight toning to the wrappers. Tanning to the top margins of the blanks and reverse of the wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “Rope of Ash is set in the fictional village of Banggul Derdap, with its rice fields, wooden thatched houses and small mosque. It is a tale of bitter hatred, in which one family is pitted against the whole village in defence of what the family members believe to be traditional values relating to the soil. Over this small and intimate society are the violent forces of nature, including a marauding tiger.

The characters are clearly delineated, and the universal theme of the social outcast and scapegoat is interwoven with that of social change. The emotional tensions that can exist and grow unchecked in a small community are precisely, yet subtly described. Death rules but life is triumphant. No matter how strong the pressures, the village must eventually reunite if it is to survive.

Shahnon Ahmad has been increasingly recognized as Malaysia’s leading contemporary novelist. His work is noted for its vividness and its faithfulness to the realities of rural life in Malaysia today. This novel forms the basis for much of Shahnon Ahmad’s later work and is essential reading for all those interested in Malaysian literature and society. The translation is by Harry Aveling, well-known for his many, controversial, translations of Indonesian and Malay literature.”

The Book of Abraham by Marek Halter (£10.50)Publisher: Collins — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002231360]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Edges of the textblock heavily spotted with tanning to the pages, heavier to the blanks.Description: Maps to the endpapers. From the cover: “The Book of Abraham is a dazzling work of historical fiction which spans two thousand years and a hundred generations of one Jewish family. It is also the fulfilment of a spectacular undertaking, for it is the history of Marek Halter’s own family which has been traced.

The book opens in 70 A.D. The legionnaires of the Emperor Titus are laying waste to Jerusalem after long years of siege and, after great hesitation and anguish, the scribe Abraham flees the burning city. It ends in 1943 when the printer Abraham Halter — the author’s grandfather — perishes in the flames of the Warsaw Ghetto.

In each of the intervening generations, at least one man follows the calling of the initiator of the family scroll. Scribe turns printer, and from the fifteenth century onwards The Book of Abraham is based on the Halter family records, revealing extraordinary documentary evidence about their lives. The descendants of the first Abraham travel from Alexandria to Rome, to Carthage and Constantinople, to Toledo, Troyes and Strasbourg, to Soncino, Amsterdam and Paris, and finally to Poland — places as vividly drawn as the characters involved.

The result is a magnificent and biblical tale of ordinary men and women — peasants and bankers, workers and merchants, poets and scholars — whose lives, governed throughout by religion and exile, are recounted against the background of the great events of the past.

As history and as fiction, The Book of Abraham is an epic both in its scope and its execution.”

Billy by Pamela Stephenson (£9.50)Publisher: HarperCollins — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 000711091X]Condition: Very Good+ - in Very Good DJ. Top edges of DJ a little ruffled.Description: Billy Connolly is loud, hilarious and contradictory. His biography, written by his wife, former comedian and practising psychotherapist Pamela Stephenson, is pretty much the same. Over the years Connolly has grown from Glasgow shipyard welder to folk-singing beardy hard man (yes there is such a thing) to darling of the good and great (or at least famous) around the world. That he is so many things to so many people while in no way compromising his core self can only be good. It would be no mean feat for Stephenson, then, to pen a history to that would satisfy Connolly audiences of fans and contemporaries from all periods of his life's journey. In most places, but in truth, not all, the author manages to do this well.The first half of the biography is somewhat anthropological in tone. Not surprisingly, a post-war Glasgow upbringing is somewhat alien to the antipodean author and Stephenson errs towards Angela's Ashes intonation as she describes her husband's tenement childhood (Scots readers may also find her regular translation of seemingly self-explanatory Scots phrases--which Connolly would use--obtuse). In contrast her examination of her experience of living with the comedian and his life from that point on is much better. Anecdotes which Connolly uses in his live shows pepper the text and laughs are raised as he tells of the time he was mistaken as a drug dealer on Speyside, of his cheeky friendships with cinema's elite and even through the more difficult times; the difficulty of balancing an almost manic humour with a troubled life. 304pp.

Yet, unlike business management, entrepreneurship remains shrouded in mystery — possibly because no one believes it can be taught. In Goldfinger, Robert Heller dispels the myths surrounding entrepreneurship and explores this unique area of business practice. At every stage — from initial thought processes, through planning to implementation and beyond — the entrepreneur can benefit from the examples of others, and from clear precepts and practices. There are entrepreneurs who have never needed a lesson, who have acted from instinct rather than intellect, but tracking their actions invariably reveals a pattern, based on logic and observation, controlled by methods which can be easily learned and followed.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Le Milieu Divin: An Essay On the Interior Life by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (£9.50)Publisher: Collins — 1961Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 2nd impression. [First Edition: 1960] Illustrated by way of: Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “As The Phenomenon of Man considered man in his natural context, its author here considers him in his supernatural context. Though as he maintained in the earlier volume, man is a phenomenon like countless others in the evolutionary series, he is not only that: he is also unique in it in that he can reflect upon it and thereby not only to an extent control it but recognise it to be part of a larger, non-material process. By transcending the purely experimental, he was able to arrive at the concept of cause and direction — in other words of a purposeful creator, of God. It is in this relationship, within the milieu divin, that Teilhard de Chardin, priest as well as scientist, places him in the present volume, as a voluntary participant in the ultimate, spiritual design for the universe, merging the historical into the a-historical, the temporal into the eternal as revealed by the Incarnation and the promise of the Second Coming. Le Milieu Divin is thus a complement and completion to The Phenomenon of Man, as necessary as its predecessor for an understanding of Teilhard de Chardin’s mind and thought.”

From the cover: “We do not know, what it would cost you to buy all the books in which English versions of the works presented in this volume appear. In any case you could not do so because a fair proportion of them are not in print in any English translation and a smaller number have not to our knowledge been translated before.

This is a selection of the flower of European mediaeval poetic art, and the word ‘European’ has been interpreted in the widest sense. First of all it is wide in the social sense because alongside the love poems and epics of the aristocracy there are to be found folk-tales, animal fables and other earthy items of peasant entertainment. It is comprehensive chronologically because the date of composition of these works ranges from about a. d. 600 to 1500, and this will comfortably embrace the extreme temporal limits of the Middle Ages by anyone’s definition. Most of all it is comprehensive in terms of the country and the language in which the work first appeared. Herein lies its supreme value. Not only does it demonstrate the unity of European poetic art but it puts at the disposal of the ordinary reader material which he could otherwise turn up only in books which are highly specialized, not easily accessible, and usually somewhat expensive.

Here are items from the far corners of Europe, from Sicily and Andalusia in the south, from Scandinavia in the north and from Ireland and Portugal in the west to Kiev in the east, not forgetting the middle where the work of troubadour and minne-singer is amply represented alongside the comic beast-epic of the Low Countries. This is not exclusively the compilation of continental Europe because the outlying islands of Ireland and Britain are also represented. The only’ major literary language omitted from the collection is English because all the English works of equal status with those included are easily accessible in such collections as Everyman’s Library.

Viewed academically the function of this book is to provide the student of Old and Middle English literature with the text of comparable works from foreign countries rendered into modern English. Viewed artistically this is probably the most enjoyable gathering of old poetry and easily the most original one to have appeared in English for some generations. The selection, arrangement and some of the translation is the work of Professor Angel Flores of Queen’s College, New York; the whole boasts the minimum of solemn introductory matter and is totally uncluttered by footnotes and similar dusty paraphernalia.”

Not By Bread Alone by Vladimir Dudintsev (£9.50)Publisher: Hutchinson — 1957Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with loss at the head of the spine and several short tears. Price Clipped. Leans. Offset to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: A Translation of 'Ne khlebom edinym', first published ini 'Novy mir' in 1956.

From the cover: “This is one of the most vital and significant documents of our time — a Russian novel which, although its first appearance was made only last autumn, is already sure of its place in history. It was first published in Russia during August, September and October 1956 in three consecutive issues of the Moscow literary periodical Novy Mir. Before the third instalment had appeared, both the book and its author had become familiar names in millions of Russian households, while heated arguments were conducted over the text by officials and Party members throughout the U. S. S. R. There were two principal reasons for its astonishing reception. The first is that Dudintsev tells a human story as only the Old Russian masters in the days before the Revolution could tell a human story. The second is that Dudintsev, in terms of the storyteller’s art, goes much farther than Khrushchev did in striking out against the tyranny which Stalin and his bureaucrats exercised over the human spirit. The hunger of the Russians for freedom found startling expression in this book, and its success has presented the rulers of the U. S. S. R. with a multitude of problems. University students took it to their hearts and at crowded meetings cried out against the Great Lies with which they had hitherto been fed. In humble homes from the Arctic to the Caspian, from the bounds of Europe to the Far Eastern deserts, tattered copies of the periodical in which it first appeared are a precious and secret possession. It would be impossible to over-emphasize the importance of this novel — either for the Russians, desperately anxious to break through into a freer life; or for ourselves, for whom an understanding of the Russians is literally a matter of life and death.

But Not By Bread Alone is also a fascinating story, which could be read for pleasure by people who have never even heard of Lenin or Stalin or Khrushchev.”

The Beasts' Choir by Carmen Bernos De Gasztold (£9.50)Publisher: Macmillan — 1967Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; First British Edition. [First Published: Editions du Cloître as Choral de Bêtes, France 1960]

From the cover: “A further collection of prayers by the French poet and mystic, Carmen Bernos de Gasztold, translated by Rumer Godden. Again the poet speaks for the voiceless ones: birds, beasts, fishes, even the humblest — and most impudent — insects, letting each animal make its own ‘statement of being’ in honour of its Creator. Lion and bear, peacock, toad and centipede, all join their voices in a choir of praise, testifying to the infinite variety of the natural world and the endless compassion of God’s understanding.

Rumer Godden first encountered the work of Carmen de Gasztold in two small volumes published by the Benedictine press Editions du Cloitre, Le Mieux Aime and Prieres dans I’Arche and, enchanted by their originality and charm, translated them for the benefit of English-speaking readers under the title Prayers from the Ark, published in 1963, also illustrated by Jean Primrose.

These new poems, written in the tranquil atmosphere of the Abbaye Saint-Louis-du-Temple just south of Paris, where Mademoiselle de Gasztold now lives, sound a subtly different note and will delight admirers of the earlier collection as well as readers come newly to these most unusual devotional poems. A sharp and sometimes humorous perception of each beast’s essential nature gives each succeeding speaker a separate and distinctive note: now grave, now gay, now stately, now ridiculous, like parts in some glorious harmony. All magnify the Lord — but are definitely of the world as well, for Carmen de Gasztold is never sentimental in her view of creation.

The translation echoes and reflects the language and spirit of the original text, with simplicity of word and depth of thought. This is a book for all ages.”

The Young Church in Action: The Acts of the Apostles Translated into Modern English by J. B. Phillips (£9.50)Publisher: Geoffrey Bles — 1958Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. Top edges of text block tanned. Leans slightly.Description: Maps to the endpapers. From the cover: “Canon J. B. Phillips says he enjoyed translating the Acts more than any of his previous work. “It has such possibilities” he writes, “in the vividness of the narrative, particularly when Luke describes scenes in which he himself took part”. There have been other translations of the Acts, but none display the same dexterity, the same easiness of reading without losing any of the qualities in which it was originally written. Luke’s work is rendered into contemporary English for new readers, for lovers of the Bible, and also for those who have given up reading their Bible because its familiarity dimmed its meaning. Of equal interest is the Appendix which contains four of the Addresses, reconstructed, enlarged and more broadly interpreted than the same addresses already translated in the main text. These augmented addresses have all been broadcast on the BBC and much admired.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Green boards with Silver titling to the Spine. 110 pages. Two Solicitudes: Conversations by Margaret Atwood; Victor-Levy Beaulieu (£9.50)Publisher: McClelland & Stewart — 1998Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0771008368]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Lightly rubbed at the tips of the wraps. Wraps slightly curled with a little dog-earing to the first few pages.Description: From the cover: “In March 1995, Victor-Levy Beaulieu, well-known French-Canadian novelist and man of letters, spent a week in Toronto, visiting renowned author Margaret Atwood. The lengthy conversations they had on that occasion were continued in May 1995, when Margaret Atwood passed a week at Beaulieu’s country home near Trois-Pistoles, Quebec. During those visits, they discussed many topics of mutual interest: the importance of childhood, of myth, and of belonging to territory; the real versus the imaginary world; the native question in Canada; power and the lack of it; the writing life — and, of course, their own works. First broadcast in French on Radio-Canada, the conversations were also published in Quebec by Editions Trois-Pistoles as Deux Sollicitudes (suggested by Hugh MacLennan’s famous novel about Quebec, Two Solitudes). Now translated into English by translators Phyllis Aronoff and Howard Scott (who won a Governor General’s Award for translation in 1997), the book is sure to engage anyone who cares about writing and about the future of Canada and Quebec.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". 252 pages. Which Bible?: A Guide to English Translations by David Dewey (£9.50)Publisher: Inter-Varsity Press — 2004Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1844740358]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition.

From the cover: “Today, a typical Christian bookshop might well stock around fifteen different versions of the Bible in English. The Internet currently offers a list of more than thirty. Why are there so many? Should there be? How do they differ? Which Bible should I use?

Some 600 million people now speak English as their first language, and twice that number speak it as their second language. Christians around the world need Bibles for use in church, for devotional reading, for academic study and for evangelism. Different versions are required for highly literate readers and for young children, for theologians and for those who have never opened a Bible before.

In this accessible and informative guide, David Dewey introduces the principles and issues involved in the task of Bible translation, traces the story of the Bible in English and offers an even-handed survey and evaluation of the different versions now available.”

It is intended to be a genuine introductory text for beginners. The main problem encountered by beginners is in expressing what they want the computer to do in terms of the instructions available in the programming language being used.
