Safety Requirements For Contraceptive Steroids: Proceedings of a Symposium On Improving Safety Requirements For Contraceptive Steroids Convened by WHO Special Programme of Research, Development & Research Training in Human Reproduction, Geneva, Feb. 1987 by F. Michal (£64.00)Publisher: Published on behalf of the World Health Organization by Cambridge University Press — 1989Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 0521354595]Condition: Very Good. Gently faded at the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Charts; Graphs; Tables;

From the cover: “Contraceptive steroids have been in use for the last thirty years and today some sixty million women use them. The importance of ensuring that regulations governing the development and use of new contraceptive steroids are appropriate is self-evident.

This book records the proceedings of a symposium organized under the aegis of the World Health Organization’s Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction. Experts from a wide range of disciplines review the risks and benefits to women of contraceptive steroids, the predictive value of toxicological studies, and the role of controlled clinical trials.

The book ends with a set of guidelines on the toxicological and clinical assessment, and the post-registration surveillance, of steroidal contraceptive drugs.

This important and authoritative compilation will be of value to all those involved in the development, testing and prescription of these compounds, and to those concerned with regulating their use in the public domain.”

Teamwork in Industry by F. J. Burns Morton (£63.00)Publisher: Chapman & Hall — 1948Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with loss at the head of the upper panel and closed tears to the lower. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Tanning and spotting to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “The author’s previous book, The New Foremanship, endeavoured to propound and analyse the problem of supervision in the light of present circumstances and likely trends. It was suggested that new methods of supervision were "necessary to bring social relationships, which in industry had remained static, into line with the great developments which had taken place in technical organisation; and further, what was needed in foremanship was also necessary in other managerial practices.

This present book, which is also addressed to all in authority and to those thinking employees who believe in the possibilities, of their jobs, sets out to show the direction of the second step. It examines the nature of better working relationships, and shows that harmonious, consciously directed working together leads to increased efficiency. Thus the name Teamwork in Industry.

The twelve chapters discuss such vital topics as the human factor and the influencing of human behaviour, co-operation and industrial relations, job satisfaction, selection and training of staff, incentives, leadership, supervision, discipline, absenteeism, working conditions and social organisation. The book concludes with a useful bibliography and index.”

The Battle of Spicheren August 6th 1870 and the Events That Preceded It: A Study in Practical Tactics and War Training by G. F. R. [George Francis Robert] Henderson (£54.00)Publisher: Aldershot: Gale & Polden — 1909Binding: Hardback Condition: Good. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding with fading to the spine and some small marks to both boards. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, later printing [First Published: 1902] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Fold-Out Maps; Fold-out Map to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “This account, penned by a noted British military historian of the late 19th century, remains one of the best narratives of a 19th-century battle yet published.

The Battle of Spicheren was fought in early August 1870, and like many of the battles in the opening phase of the Franco-Prussian war, could be termed an encounter battle. Fighting over very difficult terrain, German forces dislodged the French II Corps after a heroic defence. Henderson not only drew on the General Staff works and other official sources available to military historians of the late 19th century — the value of his work is that he also utilised many other accounts, including regimental histories.

He presents an extremely detailed narrative of the battle. Following a full discussion of the events of 6 August 1870, he also discusses the tactics of the battle, and training and other characteristics of the troops involved.”

The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". Hands to Dance by Charles Causley (£31.00)Publisher: London: Carroll & Nicholson — 1951Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn with a chip to the foot of the upper panel, a stain to the foot of the lower, and tanned overall. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: From the cover: “In this remarkable first collection of long and short stories, Charles Causley writes with wit and gusto and imaginative power not only of the Navy (in which he spent nearly six years), but also of his native Cornwall. The stories range from the deceptively peaceful market-towns of the West of England to the life of the matelot in Gibraltar, West Africa, the islands of the Mediterranean, Alexandria and Australia. He captures with zest and an infectious enthusiasm such diverse characters as the fantastic Captain Exe, Goldie: the apprehensive ex-p. o. w. , an ill-assorted Spanish family (in Adios, Gibraltar), a whole array of old Naval “sweats,” and pins them down on the paper alive and kicking.

We predict a considerable future for this lively young author whom Henry Williamson has described in The Adelphi, as “a born writer” and of whom J. C. Trewin has written in The West Country Magazine: He is a major discovery in the literature of the West of England.”

Description: From the cover: “When Sir Claus Moser said in his Presidential Address to the British Association (1990) that “central to all school problems is the state of the teaching profession”, he was expressing a widely held view. The decade of the 1980s in many English-speaking countries has done little to improve the morale and work conditions of teachers in publicly provided education.

The gap between the public rhetoric which acknowledge the importance of teachers and the realities which teachers experience remains very great. With reference to England and Wales this timely and critically stimulating book examines the issues which have to be addressed in the 1990s. It provides an agenda for educational policies and practices which take seriously the importance of teachers as key agents for realizing equal educational opportunities for all. This agenda has relevance for educational policy in a wide range of societies.

Many of the issues raised are multicultural and international, not simply British..”

Handbook of Individual Therapy by Edited by Windy Dryden (£20.50)Publisher: Sage — 1998Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 080397843X]Condition: Very Good. Light crease to the bottom corner of the upper wrapper. Slight soiling at the leading edge of the text block. Text complete, clean and tight. A pleasant copy.Description: From the cover: “This major new edition of the highly successful Individual Therapy: A Handbook presents a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the 12 key approaches to individual therapy.

A distinguished team assembled from among Britain’s leading counsellors and psychotherapists — all experienced exponents of the particular form of therapy they discuss — introduce the principles and methods of each approach concisely and accessibly. Following a clearly defined structure, chapters place each school of thought in its historical context, outline its main theoretical assumptions and set out its mode of practice, while case examples illustrate the approach in action. The contributors clarify the ways in which practitioners can identify those clients who will most benefit from each form of therapy and indicate the general strengths and limitations of each therapeutic approach.

Further chapters place counselling and psychotherapy in its social context, relate research to actual therapeutic practice and explore the training and supervision of individual therapists.

The handbook is designed for trainee and practising counsellors: novice therapists interested in obtaining an overall picture of the practice of individual therapy as well as experienced therapists interested in learning about alternative approaches to individual therapy. It will also be a valuable resource for others working in the helping professions, and for students of applied psychology.”

From the cover; “The teaching of genetic engineering is almost commonplace and an essential element in the training of a modern biologist. The development of this ever more successful text reflects the change in status and growth of the subject. Virtually the whole book has been rewritten incorporating much new material particularly in the applied chapters. Dog Training and Behaviour by Geoff Grinham (£19.50)Publisher: The Crowood Press — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852237511]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight ruffling at the top edge of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The basis of all successful dog training must be an understanding of canine psychology and behaviour. In this book this vast and frequently misunderstood subject is tackled in a clear and accessible way, enabling anyone to grasp the essentials and use them to lay the foundations for a long-lasting, mutually satisfactory human/canine partnership.

The critical development periods of the puppy and the adolescent dog, establishment of rank order, canine language and communication, and the variables of temperament and disposition are explored before the author sets out in detail a comprehensive, easy-to-follow training programme. Working logically and progressively through each stage of the dog’s learning process, the handler is shown how to teach and consolidate each lesson, from the basics of Sit, Heel and Come, to the more advanced Search and Scent Discrimination exercises. Finally there are chapters dealing with individual behavioural problems, which explain how it is possible to retrain the errant dog and prevent future regression. Throughout, the practical day-to-day relevance of the various training exercises is emphasized, and the process by which mutual trust and understanding are achieved is made clear. Thus the book is more than a training manual; it is a complete guide to getting the most out of your partnership with your dog.

Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs and original line-drawings, Dog Training and Behaviour is both a practical step-by-step guidebook and a valuable source of reference for all dog owners.”

Professional People by Roy Lewis; Angus Maude; (£19.50)Publisher: Phoenix House — 1952Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with tape-reinforced head and tail of the spine, on the reverse. Price Clipped. Leans. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Professional is a word bandied about. It has a high prestige value. But what is a profession? What is the hallmark of the professional man — or woman? Is journalism a profession equally with the practice of the law, for instance?

In this shrewdly probing book the authors of the highly praised The English Middle Classes have sought answers to this kind of question. They have discovered why, although the numbers and apparent power of professional people are greater than ever before, many of them feel unhappy at their prospects. What is to be their future social status? Will most become salaried State servants, with no real guarantee of professional freedom? Would that matter? If so, how can they prevent it? These are problems posed, and discussed at length.

But it is not intended only for the professional reader although he is, of course, most directly concerned. Like The English Middle Classes it is a witty social history of our time. With humour and humanity, the authors have related their findings to the whole structure of our society. They debate, for instance, among many aspects of the survey, ‘The State as client’,’ Professional people in business’, ‘The impact of nationalization’, ‘The disappearing clergy’, ‘The “socialized” professions’. They warn readers about certain training methods and the tendency for professional people to hand over direction of their affairs to non-professional administrators. They criticize the ignorance prevailing in most professions about the affairs and problems of the others. Particularly valuable to parents and students are the summaries of training costs, and financial prospects, and the discussion of the relative advantages of private practice and public employment.

The authors of The English Middle Classes have here produced a similarly lively and profound book. In original research they have amassed a corpus of knowledge, especially on the development of professions since the ‘20’s, which was not available before. Their conclusions prove to be of some moment to the community, as well as the professions. Acutely reasoned, provocative, their book will be welcome to all observers of the social scene.”

Prokofiev: From Russia to the West 1891-1935 by David Nice (£19.00)Publisher: Yale University Press — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Small personal monogram stamp to the first blank otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Jacket illustration: Prokofiev in the early 1920s by Natalya Goncharova. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Musical scores;

From the cover: “Since 1991 — the year that marked both the fall of the Soviet Union and the centenary of Sergey Prokofiev’s birth — a new assessment of the life and work of this remarkable and often elusive composer has become both possible and necessary. For this definitive study David Nice has drawn on an unprecedented range of new archival material, manuscripts of works previously unexamined and interviews.

The book follows Prokofiev’s personal and musical journey from his childhood on a Ukrainian country estate to the years he spent travelling in America and Europe as an acclaimed interpreter of his own works, Nice sheds new light on the striking compositions of Prokofiev’s early years, his training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and the circumstances of his departure from Russia in 1918 for what the composer thought would be a short tour of America. Through letters and documents, a thorough picture is also presented of his marriage and family relationships.

Nice re-evaluates the music of Prokofiev’s years in the west and traces his unique approach to new melodic thinking from the early works through the more complicated music of the early 1930s and on to the fresh simplicity of his early Soviet scores. He also examines the complex reasons that led Prokofiev to move his family to the Soviet Union in 1936. A second volume, The Soviet Years, will cover Prokofiev’s life from this period until his death in 1953.”

But Broud, the Clan’s future leader, becomes an implacable enemy, and causes her exile Forced into dangerous isolation, she eventually finds her soul mate and fellow Cro-Magnon, Jondalar.

It seems that the electronics service industry is constantly faced with the problem of training itself in order to keep pace with a rapidly growing industry. In 1946, the servicing of FM receivers presented a real challenge even to those who were well trained in FM fundamentals. Shortly thereafter, an even greater challenge appeared television. Early estimates of the growth of the television industry were far too conservative. Even so, it was feared that the service industry could not maintain and service the television receivers being produced. Initial Teacher Training: The Dialogue of Ideology and Culture by Margaret Wilkin (£18.00)Publisher: The Falmer Press — 1996Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0750705558]Condition: Very Good. Description: From the cover: “This book provides a highly readable account of the relationship between successive British governments and the profession of initial teacher training over the past three decades. In the 1970s, the Robbins Report led to the introduction of a curriculum which both structurally and substantively represented the ideology of the day, that of social democracy. More recent government initiatives have recreated training in the image of the market. Currently this relationship is seen as one sided, the government apparently dominating the curriculum through a series of legislative measures.

The author, however, suggests that a long-term view of this relationship may reveal a very different picture: (i) that government intervention has brought professional benefits and that the profession has selectively claimed ownership of ideological interventions; and (ii) that access to the curriculum by the government of the day has been facilitated by the ideological principles of the centre. Thus although the current situation appears to favour the government, the relationship is interactive and beneficial to both sides and it can therefore be regarded as a dialogue..”

The Buddhist Writings of Lafcadio Hearn by Edited by Kenneth Rexroth (£18.00)Publisher: Wildwood House — 1981Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0704504219]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently faded at the spine with light reading creases. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: First in this edition. [First: Houghton Mifflin, 1977] From the cover: “Lafcadio Hearn was born on the Greek island of Leucadia in 1850. After a career in journalism in the United States, Hearn travelled to Japan in 1890 to write articles about Japanese life for Harper’s Magazine. He remained there for the rest of his life, taking a Japanese wife (by whom he had three sons and a daughter) and assuming Japanese citizenship in 1895. He died in 1904, and was buried after Buddhist ceremonies in Zoshigaya cemetery in northern Tokyo. This collection of his writings on Buddhism was taken from the bulk of his writings by Kenneth Rexroth. The organization of the selections reflects Hearn’s chronological progress from a rendering of the simple tales and stories illustrative of the common folk’s beliefs in Buddhism to the more abstract philosophic doctrines of the Mahayana Buddhist sects in Japan. Of the many writers who have commented upon Buddhism in Japan, none has stood the test of time so well as Lafcadio Hearn.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼").
