Lamastre by Michael Strong (£68.00)Publisher: Robert Hale — 1984Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0709014007]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: From the cover: “Once the top hit-man of Europe. Lamastre had been dealt with effectively and painfully by Harold Levi, the financier who never gave in to pressure. And now Lamastre has escaped from the German prison where Levi had put him while, in Zurich, the fat-cats who had procured his release, rubbed their whiskers and laughed at the thought of the revenge that Lamastre would take on Levi, a man they feared as a miser fears ruin.

The action swings from Germany, to France, to Zurich, to Southeast Asia and back to London and rural England with Hong Kong bankers. Bangkok bar-girls, an ex-Guardsman, a former Israeli commando and the finest pair of killers that Paris can produce, all involved in the intricate and fast-moving plot. And, of course, there is Ferguson, hired by Levi to hunt and destroy Lamastre, who almost succeeds yet doesn’t quite fail.”

Savonarola was an Italian Dominican friar and an influential contributor to the politics of Florence from 1494 until his execution in 1498. Five hours later they were on a train to Scotland… That morning, they unwittingly kick-started an uncontrollable adventure that would eventually take them over 25,000 miles around the world, finding and meeting complete strangers with only one thing in common — they were all called Dave German too. During their six month odyssey, Dave and Danny were caught in a tornado in New York, they lost their shoes in Norway and they caused a security alert at an Israeli airport. They met greenkeepers, booksellers, carpetfitters, gurus, policemen, film stars and a semi-retired lighthouse technician.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 314 pages. This fresh translation of the ancient Chinese classic offers the essence of each word and makes Lao Tsu’s teaching immediate and alive. The philosophy of Lao Tsu is simple: Accept what is in front of you without wanting the situation to be other than it is. Multivariate Analysis (Second Edition) by Sir Maurice Kendall (£38.00)Publisher: Charles Griffin & Co. — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0852642644]Condition: Very Good - in Good+ DJ. The set of objects may be complete or it may be a sample from a larger set. The variables may be continuous or discontinuous, and themselves may be a subset of a larger group. Given such a complex, we require to study it for a number of different purposes of which the following are the most important: Structural simplification; Classification; Grouping of variables; Analysis of interdependence; Analysis of dependence; Hypothesis construction and hypothesis testing; I have no idea what any of this means to be honest but thought you may care to have a brief excerpt from the introduction. 210pp. Index. [ISBN: 0198151535]Condition: Near Fine - in Near Fine DJ. Persona Granada: Some Memories of Sidney Bernstein and The Early Years of Independent Television by Denis Forman (£32.00)Publisher: London: Andre Deutsch — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0233989870]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slightest lean otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs;

From the cover: “When ITV first went on air in 1955, Granada Television soon established itself as the most innovative of the new independent television companies. Granada took risks, ignored conventions, and challenged conventional notions of how television programmes should be made. Coronation Street, the hard-hitting World in Action, adventurous drama productions — this was television that made people sit up and watch.

Denis Forman was there from the start, and in this richly detailed and compelling memoir he combines an affectionate portrait of Granada’s prime mover, the extraordinary Sidney Bernstein, with an insider’s account of the personalities behind the scenes and the triumphs — and occasional disasters — of this remarkable television company.

They were heady days. Granada defied the antiquated rules of political broadcasting with its ground-breaking coverage of a by-election which was to change the course of television’s relationship with politicians. There were frequent battles with the Independent Television Authority over investigative reports thought to have gone too far in exposing scandal and corruption. It was a time of creative ferment, a time when Granada’s team of talented programme-makers earned the company its enduring reputation.

Denis Forman charts the history of Granada with abundant wit and a refreshing candour. His own contribution to the Granada success story, culminating in his close personal involvement in the universally acclaimed The Jewel in the Crown, was immense. He is modest about his own achievements, and generous in his appreciation of the many colleagues — some of them later to become senior figures in television — who made Granada what it was. But as this engrossing memoir reveals, none of it could have happened without the towering presence of the original persona Granada, Sidney Bernstein: founding father, guiding spirit, and one of the most remarkable men of our century.”

Wisdom Of The Wild: How We Treat Our Planet by Anon. (£26.50)Publisher: Word Wide Fund for Nature — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Presentation plate to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “There is no turning back. There never has been in history. Two hundred million American citizens are not going to leave the USA just to give back to the Indians the land that was stolen from them. The Inuit in Greenland are not about to climb into their kayaks to paddle back up the river of history. The wisdom with which “wild” peoples have animated their world cannot be fetched back at will. Nevertheless, there is a great deal to learn. This, for example: how, on the threshold of the third millennium, can we live once again in a finite world without consuming it? Pedagogues tell us that children need elements of the wild and disorder in order to become mentally sound adults. The child in its den is said to be subconsciously remembering the feeling of safety which our ancestors experienced in caves in the childhood of mankind. In Sweden, they let children fly back to the beginnings of humanity on the wings of their imagination, as it were. The wild as a tonic.

Henry David Thoreau’s suggestion that every major city should have some wildness in its vicinity (because otherwise its inhabitants would revert to the wild) is almost one hundred and fifty years old — and highly topical in view of the frustration which people feel in our concrete bunkers.

An end must be put to the dominance of the right angle. Protection programmes for spacious areas of wilderness have one purpose, among others, namely to preserve the charm of untouched nature. Real-life magic! Magic, or rather cheap tricks — that is what our oh-so-en-lightened world thought of the healing knowledge of the jungle Indians for such a long time. Until, at the sight of the burning rain forests, they realised that the best pharmacy in the world was going up in flames.

The awareness of its utility should not be the rescuers’ sole motive, however. If we only take up arms in defence of the earth where our immediate living conditions are threatened, we shall soon be sitting amidst the ruins of a barren planet. It is (unfortunately, some would say) not the case that when the trees die, man also dies immediately. There are no trees in the Mongolian steppes, but they are still not dead. The fact is, as an Indian chief once said: “After the deaths of plants and animals, you will die of the great loneliness in your hearts.” An appeal has been filed against this death sentence. This book contains a few passages from the defence counsel’s speech.”

There are chapters on Western Europe in the Middle Ages, and on Eastern Christendom, Christianity and Islam, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the expansion of Christianity. The second section is divided by geographical area, and covers the period from 1800 to the present day. There are special studies of Britain and Europe, North America, South America, Africa, India and the Far East, and the Orthodox Churches of Eastern Europe. The final section, ‘Christianity Today and Tomorrow’, considers questions of Christian conscience and belief and explores new images of the Christian community, ending with a glimpse of the future of Christianity. Throughout, the book reflects the changing world in which Christians have found themselves, and gives full weight to events and movements where the Christian response has been challenged and re-evaluated. There are over 350 illustrations, and 32 full-colour plates, all specifically chosen to complement the broad-ranging text. The book also includes ten maps, a chronology, annotated guides to further reading, and a full index. Authoritative, comprehensive and highly readable, this book captures the richness and vitality of Christian art and thought in a wide variety of cultures and times.”

The Vision of God by Vladimir Lossky (£21.00)Publisher: London: The Faith Press — 1963Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded. The pages are somewhat tanned, if tight, and a little musty. Description: Number 2 in the series.

From the cover: “This second volume in the Library of Orthodox Theology and Spirituality is written by Vladimir Lossky who, in the years between his departure from Russia in 1923 and his death in 1958, established himself as one of the most brilliant of that band of Orthodox scholars dedicated to presenting the life and thought of The Eastern Church to the West. The Vision of God can rank with his classic Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church. In it Lossky studies the meaning of the vision of God and its impact on the life and thought of the Church from the rise of Christianity to the time of Gregory Palamas in the fourteenth century and shows how it provided a purpose and a goal for the Christian life, both proclaiming and anticipating the Parousia. This fascinating work is a valuable contribution to ecumenical study.”

Handbook of Individual Therapy by Edited by Windy Dryden (£20.50)Publisher: Sage — 1998Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 080397843X]Condition: Very Good. Light crease to the bottom corner of the upper wrapper. Slight soiling at the leading edge of the text block. Text complete, clean and tight. A pleasant copy.Description: From the cover: “This major new edition of the highly successful Individual Therapy: A Handbook presents a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the 12 key approaches to individual therapy.

A distinguished team assembled from among Britain’s leading counsellors and psychotherapists — all experienced exponents of the particular form of therapy they discuss — introduce the principles and methods of each approach concisely and accessibly. Following a clearly defined structure, chapters place each school of thought in its historical context, outline its main theoretical assumptions and set out its mode of practice, while case examples illustrate the approach in action. The contributors clarify the ways in which practitioners can identify those clients who will most benefit from each form of therapy and indicate the general strengths and limitations of each therapeutic approach.

Further chapters place counselling and psychotherapy in its social context, relate research to actual therapeutic practice and explore the training and supervision of individual therapists.

The handbook is designed for trainee and practising counsellors: novice therapists interested in obtaining an overall picture of the practice of individual therapy as well as experienced therapists interested in learning about alternative approaches to individual therapy. It will also be a valuable resource for others working in the helping professions, and for students of applied psychology.”

Logic Circuit Design by Alan W. Shaw (£20.50)Publisher: Fort Worth: Saunders College Publishers — 1993Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 0030507936]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Diagrams;

From the cover: “With Shaw’s conversational writing style, sophomore engineering and computer science majors will find this text’s coverage of combinational and sequential logic design easy to understand and a pleasure to read. The text is remarkably clear and provides extensive examples. Shaw maintains an ongoing relationship with industry, which is reflected in the text’s primary goal of preparing students for entry into the workplace — ready to design.

The text’s design-first organization allows students to master a simple systematic design process, then move to design and analysis of more complex circuits. The use of polarized notation offers students an easy-to-learn notation that clarifies the thought process in design, allows a simplification of the sign process, and improves documentation. Software simulation is stressed in all designed circuits, allowing students to test circuits before committing them to hardware. An early introduction to programmable logic devices reflects their importance in design.”

Here mellow wisdom and accurate knowledge are presented with enthusiasm, vigour, and a remarkable technical skill.

Mr. Adams presents the facts and occurrences from which so many inferences about the American people have been drawn. His purpose has been to depict the interplay of thought and action as they have combined in the evolution of the American nation, to describe the actual events which have swept across this continent in the last few centuries, so that all who read may make their own interpretation, may complete their own understanding of the drama of America.

A word on the method Mr. Adams has employed in writing this interesting history. By means of an unusual skill in assimilating material he has been able to give the reader a clear, complete, easily comprehensible and interesting account of the vast and active history of American life.”

The Ballad of Sawney Bain by Harry Tait (£19.50)Publisher: Edinburgh: Polygon — 1990Binding: Paperback Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0748660461]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium.

From the cover: “When the Black Book of accused witch, Agnes Douglas, falls into the hands of the minister the account she gives of her life with the cannibal, Sawney Bain and the warlock, Steenie Malecky, differs radically from the version given by the Church. The minister’s attempts to come to terms with the disquieting figure of Agnes and the true meaning of her book disturbs his own political and historical perspectives to such an extent that his religious convictions and finally his sanity are threatened.

Set in 17th century revolutionary Scotland, The Ballad of Sawney Bain sweeps from the Lowlands to the Highlands, detailing the lives of ordinary people caught in the hurricane of political change. Tail evokes a century in which the old and the new are in conflict more than at any time before. This was a time when many thought that the second coming of Christ was imminent, others that the devil himself was abroad in the land. Only a few realised that the old order had changed forever.”

Prokofiev: From Russia to the West 1891-1935 by David Nice (£19.00)Publisher: Yale University Press — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Small personal monogram stamp to the first blank otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Jacket illustration: Prokofiev in the early 1920s by Natalya Goncharova. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Musical scores;

From the cover: “Since 1991 — the year that marked both the fall of the Soviet Union and the centenary of Sergey Prokofiev’s birth — a new assessment of the life and work of this remarkable and often elusive composer has become both possible and necessary. For this definitive study David Nice has drawn on an unprecedented range of new archival material, manuscripts of works previously unexamined and interviews.

The book follows Prokofiev’s personal and musical journey from his childhood on a Ukrainian country estate to the years he spent travelling in America and Europe as an acclaimed interpreter of his own works, Nice sheds new light on the striking compositions of Prokofiev’s early years, his training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and the circumstances of his departure from Russia in 1918 for what the composer thought would be a short tour of America. Through letters and documents, a thorough picture is also presented of his marriage and family relationships.

Nice re-evaluates the music of Prokofiev’s years in the west and traces his unique approach to new melodic thinking from the early works through the more complicated music of the early 1930s and on to the fresh simplicity of his early Soviet scores. He also examines the complex reasons that led Prokofiev to move his family to the Soviet Union in 1936. A second volume, The Soviet Years, will cover Prokofiev’s life from this period until his death in 1953.”

Developing Your Latent Powers: Thirty Practical Steps to Spiritual Satisfaction by Frederick R. [Robert] Gould (£18.00)Publisher: Robert B. Luce Co. Inc. — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Heavily faded at the spine. Price Clipped. Leans. Previous owners' inscription to the pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Developing Your Latent Powers is a practical approach to a way of life that is appealing more and more in the Western World today. It is a statement of a philosophy of life that synthesises elements of Hinduist and Buddhist thought with guidance to those who wish to be less tied to the mechanistic type of life and are aiming at greater spiritual satisfaction. It blends Eastern wisdom with Western knowledge, always avoiding the obfuscation which is common to both.

Readers are told quite frankly of the difficulties that face them in the search for enlightenment, and the exercises, always basic, will help students to attain a positive state of mind: a poise and a glad philosophy. The way of thought and the exercises Frederick Gould describes are not unfamiliar to many people in the West now that the meditative form of philosophic occultism is becoming increasingly popular. Most writing on the subject, though, is hardly easy reading.

Frederick Gould, who describes himself as a ‘humble student’, writes with long experience as a teacher, and the lucidity of his style makes the book readable without tears. He believes the kind of thinking his course advocates is urgently needed in a purposeless age that is the headache following on a night of materialist intoxication — one that has reduced man to servitude to a machine in material life and to the status of machine itself in his spiritual one. But he believes there is another path, another outlook, which he has tested and which has illumined his own life.”

Perhaps there isn’t a story and there’s never been one, he thinks (rubbing two lumps of sugar together over his pink yoghurt) for whoever is alone is best advised to bear his health in mind. Perhaps I’ve just been kidding myself all those times when I thought I was telling a story — just one story out of the many thousands I thought I still wanted to tell… The second novel by Holland’s foremost poet and novelist to be translated into English, The Gangster Girl is set in a small town on the out-of-season Riviera. The Political Thought of Woodrow Wilson 1875-1910 by Niels Aage Thorsen (£18.00)Publisher: Princeton University Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0691047510]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “Niels Thorsen argues that Woodrow Wilson was one of America’s most important political scientists. Focusing on the period from Wilson’s early years until he was elected governor of New Jersey, this work shows why he deserves a prominent place in the history of American political thought, even apart from his later attainments in the political arena. His book Congressional Government, his seminal article “The Study of Public Administration”, and his textbook The State were important contributions during the formative years of academic political science in America. In contrast to those who propose psychological explanations of Wilson’s early interest in political problems, Thorsen contends that the crisis of the election of 1876 against the backdrop of the Civil War was decisive in turning Wilson’s attention to political ideas.

Implying the abandonment of a more traditional form of political thought based on the social contract and on constitutionalism, egalitarian-ism, and common sense, Wilson linked his conclusions about the nature of politics to the rise of the social and economic sciences. Distinctive in his academic work were ideas about social and economic diversification as the condition for the growth of national power, and about political leadership asserted at home and abroad as a way to overcome traditional American fears about centralized power.”

The Selected Work Of Tom Paine by Thomas Paine (£18.00)Publisher: The Bodley Head — 1948Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper edgeworn with several short, some tape-backed now, tears and a tear across the top corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “FOLLOWING his biographical novel, Citizen Tom Paine, Howard Fast has edited the present selection from Paine’s writings. As might be expected, since they are his most famous and important works, ‘The Rights of Man’ and ‘The Age of Reason’ comprise the larger part of the book; in addition Mr. Fast has included ‘Common Sense,’ certain of ‘The Crisis Papers’ and the celebrated letter to Washington.

In his Introduction Mr. Fast writes : ‘The single most important clue to Paine’s writings is that they are dynamic. Before he ever wrote a word there were philosophers in plenty; in America, long before his time, such popular leaders as William Penn and Roger Williams had put the most advanced social and political theory of the age into practice. But there was a most important difference between the writing of those men and Paine’s writing — it may be summed up in this fashion:

‘They wrote abstractedly of the pattern of change; Paine wrote realistically of the method of change. They were philosophers who created political philosophy; Paine was a revolutionist who created a method for revolution. They moved men to thought; Paine moved men to thought and action. They dealt with theory and ideals; Paine dealt with the dynamics of one force playing against another’.

As this Selection admirably shows, Paine’s work is indeed dynamic ; it has an intensity and an inherent clear objectivity; much of it is surprisingly relevant to-day.”

Webs of Reality: Social Perspectives on Science and Religion by William A. Stahl, Robert A. Campbell, Yvonne Petry & Gary Diver (£18.00)Publisher: Rutgers University Press — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0813531071]Condition: Very Good+.Description: From the cover: “Science and religion are often thought to be advancing irreconcilable goals and thus to be mutually antagonistic. Yet in the often acrimonious debates between the scientific and religions communities, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that both science and religion are systems of thought and knowledge that aim to understand the world and our place in it.

Webs of Reality, a rare examination of the interrelationship between religion and science from a social science perspective, offers a broad view of the relationship, and poses practical questions regarding technology and ethics. Emphasizing how science and religion are practiced instead of highlighting the differences between them, the authors look for the subtle connections, tacit understandings, common history, symbols, and implicit myths that tie them together. How can the practice of science be understood from a religious point of view? What contributions can science make to a religious understanding of the world? What contributions can the social sciences make to understanding both knowledge systems? Looking at religion and science as fields of inquiry and habits of mind, the authors discover not only similarities between them but also a wide number of ways in which they complement each other..”

From the cover: “In Heaven’s Mirror, author Graham Hancock continues the quest begun in his No. 1 international bestseller Fingerprints Of Thf Gods to rediscover the hidden legacy of mankind — the revelation that the cultures we term ancient were, in fact, the heirs to a far older forgotten civilization, and the inheritors of its archaic wisdom…

Working with the photographer Santha Faiia, his wife, Hancock traces a network of sacred sites around the globe on a spectacular voyage of discovery that takes us from the pyramids and temples of ancient Egypt to the enigmatic statues of Easter Island, from the haunting ruins of pre-Columbian America to the splendours of Angkor Wat, in order to crack the code of our lost ancestors. It is an odyssey that leads to sunken monuments and hidden chambers — a journey through myth and magic, and astounding archaeological revelations, that forces us to rethink our entire conception of the origins of civilization.

Much more than a sequel to Fingerprints Of The Gods, Heaven’s Mirror is a plunge into the spirituality of the ancients — a search for the revelation of a secret written in the language of astronomy, and recorded in the very foundations of the holiest sites of antiquity…

A secret which speaks of a mysterious connection between earth and heaven…

A secret which transforms temples into stars and men into gods…

British Towns by Oliver Benn (£16.50)Publisher: London: Bouverie House — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0953277119]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Having explored every aspect of Britain’s capital in his recent Benn’s London, photographer Oliver Benn casts his original eye over some of the most attractive and popular towns of England, Scotland and Wales. As with his previous books, people, activities and the contemporary scene are seen alongside the architecture, interiors and brief history. The 260 stunning colour photographs are complemented by lively essays from local authors in each town.

The towns featured in this book are chosen for their pictorial evocation of urban lifestyle throughout the ages, and are grouped under five thematic headings. The Medieval and Renaissance towns of Cambridge, Oxford and Warwick with their striking panoramas and atmospheric interiors are like a time capsule of an earlier age, but very much alive today as seats of learning and cultural attractions. The Georgian and Regency towns of Edinburgh, Bath and Brighton seem to retain the gracious air of eighteenth century life. The Cathedral Cities of Salisbury, Exeter and Lincoln remind us of the importance of our Christian heritage in the development of our urban centres.

As Peter Richards points out in his Introduction: “In essence, all towns are clusters of streets and houses that depend for their survival on commerce”. Ludlow, Richmond in Yorkshire and Saffron Walden are fine examples of traditional but flourishing Market Towns. Finally, the identity of our island has always been bound up with the sea, with its lure to adventure and economic significance. This aspect is revealed by the historic but still active Ports of Cardiff, Conwy and Dartmouth.

Benn’s photographs explore unfamiliar corners of towns we thought we knew and familiar places from unfamiliar angles: from above, from street-level and from the inside. The British town is shown as: “a magnificent diversity of buildings and townscapes”.”

An adequate reading copy only. Gently faded at the spine with some soiling of the wraps. A slightly dog-eared copy. Cutting pasted to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Explanation and Power proposes a radical theory of meaning; that is, meaning as response. Meaning is not immanent in word or sign, natural or man-made. Human behaviour depends on interaction, and interaction depends upon the stabilization of the meanings of verbal and non-verbal signs. A Review of Current Banking Theory and Practice by S. K. [Saroj Kumar] Basu (£14.50)Publisher: London & Basingstoke: The Macmillan Press — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0333135385]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper reinforced at the spine ends with tape. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: 2nd (revised by Alak Ghosh, enlarged) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1971] Contains: Tables;

From the cover: “A quiet revolution has been taking place in the theory and practice of central and commercial banking during the last twenty-five or thirty years. It may be of some interest to draw together the experiences of the various countries and integrate the underlying trends as constituting part of a general pattern. As the central bank forms the keystone of the financial structure, recent trends in its role and financial policies have been sought to be interpreted in considerable detail. The changing role of the commercial banks has also been duly stressed. Further, the problems posed by the rise and growth of non-banking financial intermediaries like hire-purchase finance companies and development banks have called for close examination. Lastly, as the working of the international financial system has excited a great deal of controversy and as plans for the reform of the present system, and even for its replacement, have been widely discussed, it has been thought fit to devote some attention to such issues as a ‘central bank for central banks’ and the recently introduced ‘special drawing rights’ system as possible solutions of the problem of international liquidity. Although the coverage of the book extends over both developed and developing countries, the backdrop, by and large, has been the economic and financial structure of the latter with India occupying the centre of the stage.”

Sharpe's havoc : Richard Sharpe and the campaign in Northern Portugal, Spring 1809 by Bernard Cornwell (£14.00)Publisher: HarperCollins — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0007120109]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Leans very slightly.Description: Jacket illustration: The Battle of Fuentes d’Onoro, 1811. Illustrated by way of: Maps [1];

From the cover: “It is the spring of 1809 and a small British army is stationed in Lisbon when Marshal Soult begins the French invasion of northern Portugal. No one knows whether the British will fight or leave, but there is little choice for Lieutenant Richard Sharpe and his squad of riflemen, who are sent into the beleaguered city of Oporto to rescue a British mother and daughter who have chosen to stay rather than flee southwards. But what seems like a straightforward mission becomes tangled in betrayal when Kate Savage disappears.

Sharpe, with Sergeant Patrick Harper and a score of riflemen, is cut off in the city when the bridge over the river Douro is broken. They join forces with a group of fugitive Portuguese soldiers and try to fight their way back to the British lines, but their orders are overridden by a mysterious English officer, who instructs them to remain in northern Portugal. Colonel Christopher excels in high diplomacy and low cunning, and his activities lead Sharpe and his riflemen into treacherous danger.

While the French are consolidating their hold on the north of the country, Sir Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington, arrives to take command in the south. He immediately mounts his own counter-attack in a brilliant campaign that will rout the French. Sharpe becomes the hunter instead of the hunted and seizes the chance to rescue the missing Kate Savage and pursue the man who thought to sacrifice Sharpe and his riflemen for his own ambition. Amidst the wreckage of a defeated army, in the storm lashed hills of the Portuguese frontier, Sharpe takes a terrible revenge.

Sharpe’s Havoc is a classic Sharpe story, a return to Portugal with Richard Sharpe in fighting form in the company of Sergeant Patrick Harper, Captain Hogan and Sharpe’s beloved Greenjackets.”
