A History of Arctic Exploration: Discovery, Adventure and Endurance at the Top of the World by Juha Nurminen & Matti Lainema (£36.50)Publisher: London: Conway — 2009Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9781844860692]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Plates; Maps;

From the cover: “Documenting more than 2,500 years of Arctic exploration, from the earliest seafarers of antiquity and the great naval and mercantile voyages in search of the Northwest and Northeast Passages, to the conquest of the North Pole and even beyond, this book is the definitive account of expeditions made throughout the great Northern polar expanse. For the first time, it brings together the major explorers from both East and West to present one of the most detailed and beautifully illustrated surveys of the region’s history ever published.

Drawing on many previously unseen charts, artworks and maps from major European museums, the extensive holdings of the Nurminen Foundation as well as private collections and archives, A History of Arctic Exploration reveals how this remote region was gradually explored and charted by men of supreme skill, courage and initiative, overcoming extreme conditions in almost incredible feats of endurance. Key figures such as Barents, Franklin, Nordenskiold, Peary, Nansen, Stefansson and Amundsen are discussed in depth, together with an evaluation of their achievements, showing how each contributed to our understanding of the Arctic. Many perished as the North defiantly held on to its secrets, ultimately proving that success could only be achieved by adapting to the extreme conditions, following the example of the indigenous peoples, who had successfully inhabited the North for hundreds of years.

Today, the future of the Arctic is of global concern. In recent years, climate change and sovereignty disputes over territory have highlighted this worrying reality, drawing much attention to the region. Yet the Arctic has always been an inspiring and fascinating place, as well as a source of much human drama due to its harsh landscape and demanding conditions. Arctic expeditions were motivated by many different factors, including the pursuit of trade and commerce, knowledge, international dominance, individual fame, natural resources and scientific endeavour, but they can all be characterised by the uniquely human desire to push back frontiers. Collectively the accounts of such epic journeys form an absorbing and complex historical narrative, fully presented in this insightful and deeply resonant book.”

Dog Training and Behaviour by Geoff Grinham (£19.50)Publisher: The Crowood Press — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852237511]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight ruffling at the top edge of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The basis of all successful dog training must be an understanding of canine psychology and behaviour. In this book this vast and frequently misunderstood subject is tackled in a clear and accessible way, enabling anyone to grasp the essentials and use them to lay the foundations for a long-lasting, mutually satisfactory human/canine partnership.

The critical development periods of the puppy and the adolescent dog, establishment of rank order, canine language and communication, and the variables of temperament and disposition are explored before the author sets out in detail a comprehensive, easy-to-follow training programme. Working logically and progressively through each stage of the dog’s learning process, the handler is shown how to teach and consolidate each lesson, from the basics of Sit, Heel and Come, to the more advanced Search and Scent Discrimination exercises. Finally there are chapters dealing with individual behavioural problems, which explain how it is possible to retrain the errant dog and prevent future regression. Throughout, the practical day-to-day relevance of the various training exercises is emphasized, and the process by which mutual trust and understanding are achieved is made clear. Thus the book is more than a training manual; it is a complete guide to getting the most out of your partnership with your dog.

Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs and original line-drawings, Dog Training and Behaviour is both a practical step-by-step guidebook and a valuable source of reference for all dog owners.”

The authors, acclaimed commentators on Northern Ireland, address the tough questions: how to make the police representative of Northern Ireland’s population, in national allegiance, religious origin, and gender; how to reconcile the need for ‘downsizing’ with the need for new recruits; how to deal with symbolically divisive titles, uniforms and working environments; how to combine decentralisation, democratic accountability and operational autonomy; and how to demilitarise policing. John A Macdonald: The Young Politician by Donald Creighton (£12.50)Publisher: MacMillan Canada — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with wear at the spine ends notably, short closed tears in places.Description: Reprint. [First: 1952] From the cover: “To Canadians too long undernourished on formal and dull Canadian biography this book can only be an exciting shock. It begins in the Kingston, Upper Canada, of 1820, and ends in Ottawa, the still-primitive capital of the newly-created Dominion of Canada, on the evening of July 1st, 1867 — Confederation Day. Within these years lay the Rebellions of 1837-38, the birth of responsible government, and the endless growing pains and complexities of an embryo nation acquiring great form. Step by step with the country went young John A. Macdonald; at first as lacking in direction, but presently moving with certainty toward his own great place in the new nation’s story. His youthful talents, amiability and casual competence, and a gift for seeing always with a clear and amused eye, develop as we watch until they come together fully matured and ready for his great test. The young politician becomes at last the great statesman when only statesmanship could have coaxed and finally riveted the pieces of Canada together. The showy graces of youth had by 1867 turned into the virtues of patience, tolerance and casual good fellowship, covering that vision and toughness of purpose essential to grand accomplishments.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 6". Born in the reign of Queen Victoria, all have lived as adults through the Depression, the Second World War and the Millennium. But for these men, the Great War was the defining period of their lives. Pathfinder: The Untold Secret Mission in Iraq: The Inside Story of the Pathfinders, Bastard Son of the SAS by David Blakeley (£10.50)Publisher: London: Orion — 2012Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 9781409144090]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Maps [2];

From the cover: “First in — the official motto of one of the British Army’s smallest and most secretive units, 16 Air Assault Brigade’s Pathfinder Platoon. Unofficially, they are the bastard son of the SAS. And like their counterparts in Hereford, the job of the Pathfinders is to operate unseen and undetected deep behind enemy lines.

When British forces deployed to Iraq in 2003, Captain David Blakeley was given command of a reconnaissance mission of such critical importance that it could change the course of the war. It’s the story of nine men, operating alone and unsupported, fifty miles ahead of a US Recon Marine advance and head straight into a hornets nest, teeming with thousands of heavily-armed enemy forces. This is the first account of that extraordinary mission — abandoned by coalition command, left with no option but to fight their way out of the enemy’s backyard. And it provides a gripping insight into the Pathfinders themselves, a shadowy unit, just forty-five men strong, that plies its trade from the skies.

Trained to parachute in to enemy territory far beyond the forward edge of battle — freefalling from high altitude breathing bottled oxygen and employing the latest skydiving technology — the PF are unique. Because of new rules introduced since the publication of Bravo Two Zero, there have been no first-hand accounts of British Special Forces waging modern-day warfare for nearly a decade. And no member of the Pathfinders has ever told their story before. Until now. Pathfinder is the only first-hand account of a UKSF mission to emerge for nearly a generation. And it could be the last.”

Fifty-four Forty Or Fight! A Showdown Between America and England Settles the Oregon Question by Henry Castor (£9.50)Publisher: Franklin Watts — 1970Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0531010074]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heavier tanning to the spine and a small nick at the head of the same. End papers tidily reinforced. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “These words meant a lot at one time in American history. There had been a long history of border problems between the U. S. A. and Canada, starting at the time of the American Revolution, and continued in the outbreak of what the Americans refer to as THE WAR OF 1812 — a second war with Great Britain.

Before the American West developed, there really was no need to settle on borders between U. S. A. and Canada, and there had been no pre-determined boundary to the Pacific coast in what was called by the U. S. A. Oregon territory. A treaty had extended the border between Canada and the U. S. A. on the 49th parallel to the Rockies but there was considerable dispute over what would happen in the Pacific West, especially as Russia and Spain both had some claims. The matter was settled amicably in 1846 by extending the boundary between Canada and the U. S. A. with a deviation to follow the Juan de Fuca Strait.

This is a fascinating bit of history, and marks the last serious dispute between Canada and the U. S. A. , especially as it was linked with such seemingly diverse matters as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Monroe Doctrine, the British Corn Laws, and even the Irish potato famine of 1845-47.”

It's All in the Playing by Shirley Maclaine (£9.50)Publisher: Bantam — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9780593013991]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Bruised at the head of the spine with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Price Clipped. Edges of the textblock lightly soiled. Leans very slightly. Text bright and tight.Description: From the cover: “Ranging from Malibuto London, from the Pacific Northwest to the mysterious mountain landscape of Peru, Shirley MacLaine’s latest journey takes us into the heart of the soul and the unexplored territory where history and memory meet. For Shirley, it is not enough to know that she has lived before — she has to know how and why, what meaning it has for her life, and how it will shape the future.

Retracing her steps and recalling her earliest investigations into the metaphysical world brings her face-to-face with the woman she was when she began. Only now, ten years later, can she come to terms with the way her search altered her life beyond measure, and understand where she must go from here.

In a moving, compelling and often surprising narrative, Shirley MacLaine uncovers a vital truth: that we have the power to design the world in which we live, and the strength to remake ourselves in the images of our dreams.”

Systems of Survival: A Dialogue on the Moral Foundations of Commerce and Politics by Jane Jacobs (£9.50)Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton — 1993Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0340591773]Condition: Very Good.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “This study of the ethical basis of public life asks and answers a host of questions: when is industriousness a vice; why do government-run businesses bog down in waste and inefficiency; and when is it ethical to deceive? It shows that human behaviour is governed by two distinct ethical systems — one has its basis in territory and the other in commerce. These two modes of survival each have their own totally separate and contradictory ethical systems. Conflicts occur when the precepts appropriate to territorial morality is imposed on commercial life..”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). [XIII] 236 pages. Voice of Britain: The Inside Story of the Daily Express by Robert Allen; John Frost; (£9.50)Publisher: Patrick Stephens — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. From the cover: “Never before has an outsider penetrated the unknown territory of the Daily Express and written about what he found there. This is a unique view of one of our most popular daily newspapers filled with fascinating insights into those personalities who have made the paper what it is today. There are interviews with Jean Rook, Sir Osbert Lancaster, Jak, Michael Cummings, Roy Ullyett and even an exclusive hard-to-get interview with the legendary Giles. The story of the newspaper is told in detail. And what a story! For many years the Express was dominated by the powerful personality of Lord Beaverbrook, one of the most controversial figures of a profession which is rich in ‘characters’. Beaverbrook used his great wealth and his powerful newspapers to advocate his own imperialist policies. But he was shrewd enough to realise that the public would only read his opinions if they were presented in an attractive paper and so he hired the best talent around in order to push the Daily Express to the very top of the readership ratings. For very many years the Express has been synonymous with lively, interesting reading and the public entertained by many great names as diverse as Chapman Pincher, Beachcomber, Strube, Percy Hoskins, Sefton Delmer, Victor Blackman — and Rupert! Today the paper is still never far from the limelight. In the late 1970s it became a tabloid to modernise its image. For Express readers and all others interested in Press history this is a book not to be missed.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Lord Matthews. Size: 9¾" x 6¾". Wave Me Goodbye: Stories of the Second World War by Edited by Anne Boston (£9.50)Publisher: Virago Press — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9780860688372]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges.Description: From the cover: “« Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye » ran the jaunty hit song as women and men were encouraged to ‘Do their Bit’ in the years of the Second World War. But behind the songs and the official patriotic line lay the complicated realities of wartime life. In this marvellous collection of stories by British and American women writers, war is evoked, in the words of Elizabeth Bowen ‘more as a territory than as a page of history’. Here, in stories by, among others, Rosamond Lehmann; Kay Boyle; Olivia Manning; Rose Macaulay; Barbara Pym; Dorothy Parker; Jean Rhys; Stevie Smith; Sylvia Townsend Warner; Beryl Bainbridge and Dons Lessing; is the world of radio news and air-raid warnings, of the Blitz which reduces neighbourhoods to rubble and a lifetime’s possessions to dust. Food, and privacy, are dreamed of and unattainable luxuries — women bid goodbye to husbands, lovers, brothers and sons — and years later try to remake their lives with strangers. For the people of these stories, war is less about progress on the frontline of battle than about the daily struggle to keep homes, families and relationships alive: to snatch pleasure from danger, and strength and comfort from shared experience — and about the subtle damages inflicted on boys and men by the exigencies of war.

At a period in history when time was agonizingly curtailed, the short story provided the perfect vehicle through which emotion and incident could be captured. Taken from many of the publications of the forties, these stories offer a wonderfully authentic portrait of life during the Second World War: here are superb examples of story telling by some of the finest writers of a generation”

From the cover: “First published in 1908, We of the Never-Never has long been regarded as a classic of Australian literature.

Newly married, Jeannie Gunn accompanies her husband to The Elsey , the huge cattle station in the Northern Territory, several hundred miles from the nearest town.

She is one of the few white women in the area and her presence is at first resented by the stockmen until her warmth and spirit win their affection and respect.

This is one of the few autobiographies written by a woman to chronicle the life of the pioneers of the outback. In the style of the bush storyteller, Mrs Gunn conveys with moving simplicity the beauty and cruelty of the land, and the isolation and loneliness, comradeship and kindness of the early settlers.”

Adventurer's Paradise by Alastair Scobie (£8.50)Publisher: London: The Travel Book Club — 1955Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with light fraying to the spine ends and corners. Tanning to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps [1];

From the cover: “Alastair Scobie spends his time in the wilder parts of East Africa looking for trouble — principally wild-animal trouble. With a film camera and gun he wanders over the long plains and steep passes of Northern Kenya, ankle deep in volcanic dust, or through gorilla and rhino tunnels, forced passages in the massed bamboo forests of the “Mountains of the Moon” on the edge of the Congo. Wherever he goes he seeks sensation for the entertainment of the millions who take their thrills vicariously through the medium of cinema or television.

His book is packed with stories of his adventures and of the fantastic characters, white and black, in whose company he has found a wild and esoteric pleasure. Some of them may be crazy, some utterly degenerate, some plain savage, but the hilarious tales of their primitive lives, packed helter-skelter between the thrills of his more frightening moments in putting on film the dangers of the wild, make a book which cannot fail to keep any armchair-traveller awake into the small hours.

There have been many books of big-game hunting, but your big-game hunter does not go on safari asking for trouble ; he would much rather shoot his lion or rhino from a safe distance than wait for it to come full tilt at him face to face. For the free-lance movie cameraman the goal is just that. He can only sell action — close-up action — and if the camera doesn’t get out from under quickly enough that merely means another camera — and perhaps another cameraman. Alastair Scobie has so far managed to get out from under in the nick of time.”

Evans has the clearest vision, of progress through engineering; Malachi simply wants to make money; and Dipra sees politics as his way to the top. They experience condemnation and praise, hatred, envy and love as their careers diverge and converge in intricate patterns. They learn in different ways how to relate to the wider world and how to handle moral problems. They fight and make up as success and failure alternate at various times for all three. Divided Loyalties, Shared Beliefs: A Living Faith in Political Life by John G. Muir (£4.00)Publisher: Christian Focus — 1994Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1857921003]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. By looking at the lives of prominent politicians of different parties and the Christian profession made by each — it is possible to see a sign of unity and hope in the world of political dogma. People of integrity who have opposing solutions to world problems can affirm that they have a common faith — one which will outlast governments and policies; common concerns which govern their actions and determine their priorities. This is no manifesto for a political party, rather, it is a picture of faith at work in the controversial territory of Whitehall.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Lord Mackay of Clashfearn. Islands in Danger: The Fantastic Story of the German Occupation of the Channel Islands, 1940-45 by Alan Wood; Mary Seaton-Wood; (£4.00)Publisher: New English Library — 1985Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0450029352]Condition: Good. An adequate reading copy only. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps. Pages lightly age-tanned with some light spotting to start and finish.Description: From the introduction: “The Germans first set foot as conquerors on British soil on a hot sunny day in June, 1940, when Luftwaffe officers landed on the Guernsey airport and drove (some of them by taxi) to their rooms in the Royal Hotel. The Channel Islands remained the only part of British or American territory to be occupied by the Germans during the War. For nearly five years what happened there remained a secret, with nothing but strangely conflicting rumours emerging. Tales reached England of mass deportations, of concentration camps and near-starvation; others told a different story of contented collaboration by the island authorities, joint dances and football matches with the German troops, and a black market in which both islanders and Germans were growing rich.”Notes: Size: A Format (7" x 4½"). 314 pages.
