The Imperial Russian Navy by Anthony J. Watts (£154.00)Publisher: London: Arms & Armour Press — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0853689121]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is a little faded at the spine and onto the margins of the panels. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Occupying a most important place in naval history, the fleets of the Imperial Russian Navy represent a major subject for study by serving officers, senior historians and naval buffs. Few published accounts have done justice to the topic, and none has offered the range of photographic illustration presented in this volume. The three centuries of naval development covered here demonstrate that its constant need to control its own ports and precious narrow exits to the oceans, as well as its pursuit of access to the Mediterranean, has caused the Russian Navy to be regularly in combat and at the forefront of advances in design, armament and strategy. Throughout the battles with its neighbours, the Crimean, Russo-Japanese conflicts, and the First World War, the Imperial Russian Navy deployed novel ships and weapons, including early use of torpedoes and of the submarine.

Anthony Watts has brought together an unprecedented collection of photographs and data to provide this new study of a most significant element of military history. Through his summary of Russian naval evolution, his compendium of technical information and the pictorial coverage, he has provided a most important contribution to naval literature, perhaps the most valuable volume on the subject for eighty years.”

TSR-2: Phoenix or Folly? by Frank Barnett-Jones (£104.00)Publisher: GMS Enterprises — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 187038427X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy of an umcommon title in any edition. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “In the late 1950’s the Government of the day embarked on a major initiative which was to change forever the basic structure of Britain’s Aviation Industry. At the same time the Royal Air Force had an urgent requirement for a new strike aircraft. From this emerged one of the most far-reaching military aviation programmes ever embarked upon by a British government up to that time. The subsequent arguments and debates for and against were voiced in all sections of the media, attracting both public attention and condemnation.

The new industry emerged from the ashes of the old as the British Aircraft Corporation and the Hawker Siddeley Group, however, the project that was formulated as the very incentive in bringing about the change was firstly condemned and then literally scrapped by a new, incoming government. It was always indicated that the project was cancelled because of its cost, but has this been used merely to disguise an underlying, alternative reason?

This book attempts to describe the aircraft, its systems and intended roles. At the same time it also traces the origins of the Operational Requirement and tries to piece together for the first time the controversial issues and personalities that conspired together to bring about the tragic downfall of the TSR-2.”

The Osprey Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft by Bill Gunston (£77.00)Publisher: London: Osprey Aerospace — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1855324059]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper has been misfolded by the publisher at the head of the lower panel and is very slightly creased at the foot of the spine which has a small ding mid-way. Description: First in this edition. [First: 1983 as Aircraft of the Soviet Union] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “This huge work constitutes Bill Gunston’s 330th book. Commenting on its content, the author states It has taken more blood, sweat and tears than any 20 ordinary books. For one thing, at least half of what we thought we knew about Russian aircraft has turned out to be wrong.

At last, this exhaustive compilation can be put before the public with confidence that it documents the true histories of some 1000 types of aircraft. At last, the ‘red herrings’ and spurious details invented (mostly in the two decades between 1950 and 1970 by people in the West) have been swept away and replaced by the facts. It can confidently be claimed that no book in the history of aviation has ever contained anything like as much new information.

The author thought his task would be greatly eased by the fact that in 1983 he had written the then definitive work on the subject, entitled Aircraft of the Soviet Union. This was the bible on the subject for many years, but when it came to compiling this new work, Gunston had to check over every word because so much of what was thought to be fact has turned out to be wrong in varying degrees. Moreover, as there is no longer a Soviet Union the title of the completed work had to change.

This in turn meant that the starting point had to go back from 1918 to 1875!

The main text is prefaced by sections on aircraft designations, engines, air-launched weapons, avionics and many other topics including Western reporting names. At the end of the book is a section on Ekranoplans, which the West often call by the clumsy title wing-in-ground-effect vehicles . Some of these are veritable flying ships, with awesome size and performance, and many are products of aircraft design teams. This section itself could have formed a complete book, and much of the information included here has not previously been published.

It needed the proverbial shoehorn to get it all in between one pair of covers, as the amount of information provided is astronomic. Pick any type and compare its treatment with what you get in any other source — even one dealing with just a specific design team. This volume really is the ultimate work on Russian aircraft.”

Before the Ironclad: Ship Design, Propulsion and Armament in the Royal Navy, 1815-60 by Edited by David K. [Keith] Brown (£50.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0851775322]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper sunned at the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [14]; Black & White Photographs; Graphs; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “In the massive revolution that affected warship design between Waterloo and Warrior, the Royal Navy is often depicted as fiercely resisting every change until it was almost too late, but this new history of the transition from sail to steam challenges these old assumptions.

Beginning with the structural improvements of Robert Seppings, the book traces the gradual introduction of more scientific methods and the advent of steam and the paddle fighting ship, iron hulls and screw propulsion. It analyses the performance of the fleet in the Crimean War, and concludes with the design of Warrior, the first iron-built, sea-going capital ship in the world.

In passing, the author reveals an organisation that was well aware of new technology, carefully evaluating its potential use, and occasionally (as with its enthusiastic espousal of iron hulls) moving too quickly for its own good. Based on much new research, and a lifetime’s understanding of the technical problems, Before the Ironclad is a well-balanced and coherent account of general developments, as well as an in-depth study of the ships themselves.”

Back to the Drawing Board: Aircraft That Flew But Never Took Off by Bill Gunston (£44.00)Publisher: Motorbooks International — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0760303169]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “An aircraft designer would, quite obviously, never design an aeroplane that he felt would be either dangerous or unsuitable for its purpose. But designers are so often the victims of accountant’s reports, committee recommendations and severe movement of the goal-posts, that the end-product that takes to the air bears little resemblance to his original concept. This book is a study of some of the examples that, for some reason, became notorious for their inability to fulfil their raison d’etre.

Each aircraft that is included is looked at in depth from several aspects. What was the intended purpose of the aeroplane? Why did the designer reach his conclusion? Why did the machine fail to live up to expectations? The answers to these questions makes for fascinating reading and gives a tantalising insight into the world of aircraft design and construction over the last century.”

Twentieth Century Industrial Archaeology by Michael Stratton & Barrie Trinder (£44.00)Publisher: London: E & FN Spon — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0419246800]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “This book offers a new view of twentieth century Britain. At one level it is a guidebook to the artefacts, the buildings and the landscapes that have shaped our civilisation of the past hundred years. In the tradition of landscape history established by W. G. Hoskins and Maurice Beresford, the authors offer journeys along by-passes, amongst the mounds where ordinance factories once stood, through industrial estates and garden suburbs, and to chemical manufacturing complexes where the public rarely venture. This book identifies the places which have shaped modern industrial Britain, the twentieth century equivalents of Cromford, Ironbridge, Blaenavon and New Lanark, and shows how the observation of subtle features in the landscape can illuminate the recent history of almost any town or stretch of countryside. Landscapes are re-populated and re-animated through the skilful use of reminiscences and observations, and by drawing on process recording by professional archaeologists, and throughout the book there is an awareness of the links between places where goods were produced and the museums where they are now displayed.

The book also shows how the archaeological record raises questions about some of the major issues of twentieth century British history, the production of munitions in two world wars, the booms in house building of the inter-war period and of the years between 1953 and 1973, the nature of coal-mining communities, and the take-up of scientific and technological innovations.”

Nelson's Ships: A History of the Vessels in Which He Served 1771 - 1805 by Peter Goodwin (£42.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0851777422]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight rippling to the foot of the leaves, possibly caused by slight damp at some time, but inoffensive. Description: Jacket illustration: Nelson's Flagships at Anchor, 1807 by Nicholas Pocock. This is a composite image of Nelson's flagships at the Spithead anchorage painted in 1807. From left to right, Agamemnon, Vanguard (showing her broadside), stern view of Elephant flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the Blue, Captain and then Victory firing a salute and flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the White. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Much has been written about Nelson, the man and his successful career from midshipman to great commander, culminating with his glorious death at the Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805. Added to this, considerable literary works have been published about his flagship at that famous battle, HMS Victory, but little has been written about the other vessels in which he served throughout his career, providing him with experience vital to his professional and personal development.

Beginning with HMS Raisonnable, the 3rd Rate 64-gun ship in which Nelson began his naval career at the start of 1771, Nelson’s Ships provides a service history of the 25 Royal Navy vessels in which Nelson served. All the famous ships-of-the-line are included: Agamemnon, the vessel of which he assumed command in 1793, Captain, which he commanded at Cape St. Vincent, Vanguard, flagship at the Nile and of course Victory. For the first time many of the smaller ships Nelson served in such as Carcass, Badger and La Minerve, are examined. A final chapter is devoted to the 12 ships in which Nelson served only for a very brief period of time.

A comprehensive background to each vessel is provided examining the design, construction and armament. A full service history then follows including the actions in which the ship participated, any modifications that were made, refit histories and costs, a complete list of the commanding officers of the ship and finally the ship’s ultimate fate. Numerous illustrations, superb plans and draughts specially drawn by the author, and a lavish colour artwork section complements the text.

The incidents that occurred whilst Nelson was on board each ship reveal an abridged version of his career and offer both the enthusiast and general reader an insight into the man himself. Utilising the ships’ logs allows the work to examine many important issues in Nelson’s navy such as victualling and health, discipline and punishment, ship handling and repair thus providing a fascinating insight into the reality of life at sea and disproving many of the myths surrounding the Georgian navy. Fully researched and developed by one of the most well known and respected Nelson historians, Nelson’s Ships is an invaluable work for both the academic and enthusiast alike.”

History of the Polish Air Force, 1918-68 by Jerzy B. Cynk (£41.00)Publisher: Reading: Osprey Publishing — 1972Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 085045039X]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper lightly sunned at the spine otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “This detailed account of the Polish Air Force — its birth in revolution, its brief but heroic period as the air arm of an independent nation, and its present status as one of the principal weapons in the armoury of the Soviet bloc — fills a serious gap in published aviation history. It is the first complete coverage of the subject to appear anywhere in the world.

The survey is divided into six parts: the birth of the Polish Air Force, up to 1918; the P. A. F’. s part in the fight for Poland’s independence, 1918-20; the inter-war developments, 1921-39; the air war over Poland, September 1939; the P. A. F. contribution to the Allied cause in France and Britain, 1940-45; and the P. A. F. of the Polish People’s Republic, 1943 to the present. In addition extensive appendices list data on aircraft supplies and equipment strength, operational records, commanders, bases, and losses and air victories in the two world wars. 250 photographs provide a unique record, and are of special interest to students of the early years of European aircraft.

Based on much information new to the West, exhaustively documented, and written with admirable objectivity, it amounts to more than a history of an air force. The author has taken such trouble to explain the historical, social and economic background that it becomes an important contribution to the history of Poland itself, and a commentary on the socio-political problems of air technology which are just as applicable today.”

During the period 1860-2000 the gross domestic product grew 21-fold, while EU nations on average achieved 11-fold growth. Today, Finland is known for its competitiveness, high educational standards, negligible corruption, expertise in creating and using high technology, and successful companies, most notably Nokia. This book tells how Finland astonishingly evolved from an internationally insignificant agrarian economy to the affluent, knowledge-based, welfare society that it is now. From the cover: “Volume 1 of a trilogy spanning the air war on Britain, The Blitz Then and Now, this book covers the first year, the period from phoney war to total war: September 3, 1939 to September 6, 1940. Beginning with endless air raid warnings and a sense of unreality, it was a phase which was to culminate in Hitler threatening to raze Britain’s cities to the ground.

As a direct source of the day-to-day effects of Luftwaffe operations over Britain at the time, the book utilises extracts from the 24-hour log compiled by the Ministry of Home Security, and this provides a contemporary diary of events as they affected the Home Front. These entries ideally form the setting for a detailed record of the losses sustained by the Luftwaffe over Britain and within sight of land: a barometer of the air war, showing clearly the changing climate of hostilities. Until the summer of 1940 these were mainly reconnaissance flights and attacks on shipping, which gathered pace after Dunkirk as the air attack on Britain and the Royal Air Force escalated through its several stages as a prelude to invasion. Every German crash on land is listed with its crew, and footnotes are included on all those which are known to have been investigated or excavated since the end of the war, together with photographs of some of the more interesting discoveries.

Features and special articles by historians and eyewitnesses intersperse the daily happenings, illustrating life at the time on both the civilian and service fronts, and contrasting descriptions by German airmen give us an insight into just what it was like to be on the other side.

Even now, within a single generation, it seems another world… a part of history… yet the link with the present day is depicted by the comparison ‘then and now’ photographs which are a central feature of all After the Battle publications.

For its unique photographic coverage, and its contribution to the literature of the period, this book is likely to serve as an incomparable record in the years to come.”

Nelson's Ships: A History of the Vessels in Which He Served 1771 - 1805 by Peter Goodwin (£32.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851777422]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Knocked at the bottom corner of the upper board otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: 2nd printing. [First Published: 2002] Jacket illustration: Nelson's Flagships at Anchor, 1807 by Nicholas Pocock. This is a composite image of Nelson's flagships at the Spithead anchorage painted in 1807. From left to right, Agamemnon, Vanguard (showing her broadside), stern view of Elephant flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the Blue, Captain and then Victory firing a salute and flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the White. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

Barclays stamps to front pastedown and ffep.Description: OVER the last twenty years the science of OR has grown rapidly. It has grown not only in the sophistication of the techniques which it uses, not only in the rapid intake of the personnel employed, not only in the rapid increase of the salaries of all those working in this field, but it bas also grown in the type of problem it tackles and in the maturity it brings to these prob- lems. Such has been its rapid growth that notwithstanding the great deal of interaction between the OR scientist and the industrialist, the management executive often hasn't a clue what it is that the OR men in his company are doing. For the man who does not yet have OR within his company, there is the perplexing problem of whether he should undertake OR and, if he does, what is going to happen, what sort of people will he employ and how will they go about their business. To introduce OR into a company requires a tremendous act of faith on the part of the executive. 107pp. Index. Size: 8vo Demy (8½" x 5½")

[ISBN: 0854296972]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Every advance that has ever occurred in aviation has been the result of a new problem encountered and then solved. From the very earliest days Britain was in the forefront of progress by empirical means, and by 1917 it was already becoming the practice to build special aircraft for trials purposes to test some theory or line of research without necessarily any intention of placing those machines in production. Very soon this arrangement was formalized by the issuing of Government contacts to an Air Ministry specification.

The aircraft and designs encompassed within this system embrace most of the more important aspects of British aeronautical progress, and in this book Ray Sturtivant charts the history of such developments over a period spanning some seven decades.

The twenty years leading up to the Second World War saw research into every aspect of aeronautical theory, with projects gaining official sponsorship on a numerical scale which would be quite impracticable today. Early projects included investigations into the understanding of control in slow speed flight and the elimination of the dreaded ‘spin’ which had claimed the lives of so many pilots of the RFC and RAF.

These were the years of such aircraft as the Westland-Hill Pterodactyl which investigated the properties of swept wings, the knowledge gained being put to good use many years later in — amongst other developments — the Avro Vulcan bomber. Likewise the pre-war development of rotor-craft in the form of the Cierva and Hafner autogiros paved the way first to the helicopter and then latterly to the tilt-rotor aircraft of today.

Post-war, after enormous strides made as the result of the conflict, there were problems to solve afresh as the result of the adoption of the jet engine and the related increases in speed and height that became attainable. Similarly the jet engine provided the impetus to the many projects avidly seeking the solution to the Vertical Take-off and Landing conundrum unravelled so brilliantly in the Hawker Harrier.

Ray Sturtivant’s deeply researched text is accompanied by photographs or line drawings of almost every one of the numerous aircraft covered. These images — from the oddest to the sublimely beautiful — in themselves provide a fascinating chronology of seventy years at the leading edge of aviation technology which is now taking Britain into the 21st century.”

Far Eastern File: Intelligence War in the Far East, 1930-45 by Peter Elphick (£24.00)Publisher: London: Hodder & Stoughton — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0340665831]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “During the 1930s the Far East was a fertile hunting ground for the espionage and counterespionage agents of many nations, especially for those of Great Britain, the United States and Japan, as well as of Germany, Italy and the USSR. Sometimes they worked in remote places on the border of Manchuria and Russia, or in the jungles of Malaya and Thailand; while others operated in Tokyo, Singapore, Manila and Hong Kong, not to mention that international melting pot and powder keg, Shanghai.

Throughout, the author emphasises the Japanese subversion and fifth-column activity; but in the background of operations were the spies of the communication airwaves, the so-called Signals Intelligence (or Sigint) operators who plucked diplomatic, consular, military and naval coded messages out of the ether and passed them to the cryptanalysts. At the centre of the British Sigint and intelligence co-ordination operations was the Far East Combined Bureau, a highly secret organisation, established in Hong Kong in 1935, which is here researched for the first time through recently released material from the Public Record Office and unpublished accounts of surviving officers. These reveal its impact and that of its successors on the eventual outcome of the Pacific war.

Using the latest published information, Peter Elphick illuminates fascinating new facets of many important issues including Britain’s appeasement policy towards Japan, the Melville Cox affair, the S. S. Automedon incident and the conspiracy theories which claim Churchill and Roosevelt had prior knowledge of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Peter Elphick’s unrivalled knowledge of the period and locale combined with his research into official intelligence material only released in the 1980s make Far Eastern File a book of unique importance and lasting interest.”

Castles from the Air: An Aerial Portrait of Britain's Finest Castles by Paul Johnson (£22.00)Publisher: London: Bloomsbury — 2006Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0747587469]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Boards Lightly rubbed at head and tail of the spine. Text bright and tight. A nice, tight, copy.Description: Contains a glossary. Contains a glossary of terms. Jacket illustration: Ludlow Castle, Shropshire. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “The castles of Britain are icons of history. They were built to mark the domains of the powerful, and stood as symbols of authority. Their structures reflect the highest technology of the day — solid against battering rams, siege and cannon fire. And their locations identify the prevailing understanding of how the lie of the land could be turned to advantage. But imposing as the view from the ground can be, nothing shows their form and purpose better than the view from above.

Castles from the Air traces the origin and evolution of British castles from their Norman and earlier beginnings, through the great age of castle building in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries to the slow decline of castles as an architectural form in the fifteenth century. Through the Civil War in the seventeenth century, and the Napoleonic wars at the turn of the nineteenth century, although no longer the imposing bulwarks of earlier times, castles continued their important defensive role.

In Castles from the Air, hundreds of years of history are captured at a glance in more than 150 photographs of outstanding quality, revealing the past in a new and illuminating way. No better, nor more beautiful portrait of the castles of England, Scotland and Wales has ever been published before.”
