TSR-2: Phoenix or Folly? by Frank Barnett-Jones (£104.00)Publisher: GMS Enterprises — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 187038427X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy of an umcommon title in any edition. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “In the late 1950’s the Government of the day embarked on a major initiative which was to change forever the basic structure of Britain’s Aviation Industry. At the same time the Royal Air Force had an urgent requirement for a new strike aircraft. From this emerged one of the most far-reaching military aviation programmes ever embarked upon by a British government up to that time. The subsequent arguments and debates for and against were voiced in all sections of the media, attracting both public attention and condemnation.

The new industry emerged from the ashes of the old as the British Aircraft Corporation and the Hawker Siddeley Group, however, the project that was formulated as the very incentive in bringing about the change was firstly condemned and then literally scrapped by a new, incoming government. It was always indicated that the project was cancelled because of its cost, but has this been used merely to disguise an underlying, alternative reason?

This book attempts to describe the aircraft, its systems and intended roles. At the same time it also traces the origins of the Operational Requirement and tries to piece together for the first time the controversial issues and personalities that conspired together to bring about the tragic downfall of the TSR-2.”

The Oil Engine Manual by D. S. D. [Denys Stephen Dodsley] Williams (£69.00)Publisher: Temple Press — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with nicks at the spine ends and a short, triangular, crease and tear to the foot of the upper panel. Tanning to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: 6th edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1939] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Graphs [1 Fold-Out]; Diagrams; Tables; Period Advertisements;

From the cover: “The first edition of this Manual appeared some 16 years ago and later editions were widely used as books of instruction during the Second World War. Considerable developments in engine design and a variety of applications took place during the period covered by the preceding five editions. In more recent years, however, the pace has, far from slackening, actually accelerated, so that the fundamental background of oil engine design has undergone considerable changes. The number of manufacturers has varied, whilst their power ranges have been made more extensive, even though the actual number of engine models has decreased somewhat through rationalization.

This new edition of “The Oil Engine” Manual has been very largely rewritten to cover changes occurring during the past five years. It is now fully up-to-date, as is only possible when the work is produced in the office of a journal dealing with the subject on a full time and highly specialized basis.

Chapters in the first part of the Manual give the background for engine design (of various forms) for all duties other than marine applications. In the second part, leading details are given of all the current makes of oil engine constructed in the United Kingdom, again for all purposes other than ship and boat duties. The third and final part is a technical appendix, which will be found useful, not only for those concerned with engine manufacture, but for those engaged in the use of such prime movers. Students also will find the whole book of permanent value to them in their work relating to this type of heat engine.”

Equinox: Ekranoplan by Aldo Palumbo (£42.00)Publisher: Channel Four — 1998Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1851442243]Condition: Very Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Ekranoplans — craft designed to exploit the special aerodynamics of low-altitude flight — unite many of the advantages of ships and aircraft. They can travel at high speed but are much cheaper than aircraft to build and run. What’s more, the bigger they are, the more efficient they become, so they can carry huge cargoes or large numbers of passengers.

Seeing the military potential of such a craft, Nikita Khrushchev backed a programme to develop a massive ekranoplan during the Cold War. The result weighed 540 tonnes and was capable of speeds exceeding 400 kph.

Various research and development programmes have since been pursued independently, and now, with congested airports and overstretched air-traffic control systems in many parts of the world, it seems the ekranoplan’s time may have come.

This booklet gives the history of the ekranoplan, explains its aerodynamics, looks at current projects and analyses the combination of circumstances that could make these vessels a common sight in our harbours and waterways. It also provides details of sources of further information.”

U.S. Destroyer: An Illustrated Design History by Norman Friedman (£42.00)Publisher: London, Melbourne: Arms & Armour Press — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0853685215]Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Heavily bruised at the head, tail and corners of the boards with damaged to the dust wrapper which has a tape repair to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Front hinge starting. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise and a good reference copy of an uncommon title. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “For almost a century, the destroyer has been the image of sleek, aggressive power. This hook explains how the U. S. Navy developed its destroyers. It also describes the naval and civilian forces that determined the design and operation of these ships. In the past two decades, U. S. destroyer design, now typified by the Spruance and Perry classes, has become increasingly controversial: for example, nuclear vs. conventional power, endurance vs. speed. Norman Friedman, a highly regarded authority on U. S. warships, discusses the reasoning behind the designs of these ships — this reasoning, he believes, will continue to dominate U. S. warship development for the remainder of this century.

From their torpedo-boat forebears onward, all destroyer classes are illustrated and described in detail. Many designs that were never carried to construction are also discussed because of their significance in the development of the ships actually built. These designs range from the large “destroyer leader” of 1919, through the 40-knot Seahawk of the sixties, to those that preceded the current Spruance and Ticonderoga.

The author also describes the destroyer escorts (DE, now frigates, FF), the large post-war frigates (DL/DLG, now redesignated cruisers), and the Perry-class FFGs. They are all interrelated, all part of the destroyer story.

An entire chapter is devoted to destroyer combat experience in World War II, as this had a major influence on ship design and development. Extracts from battle reports made at that time are included. Separate chapters describe destroyer weapon systems for antiaircraft and antisubmarine warfare as they have evolved since the beginnings of the destroyer force.

Friedman’s detailed descriptions and illustrations of ships and of their modifications in service should be of great interest to naval historians, model-builders, and to all ship lovers. Most classes are illustrated by detailed profiles drawn by renowned draftsman Arthur D. Baker III, and in many cases inboard profiles showing the internal arrangements of the ships are included. Detailed photographs of World War II ships alter relit should be invaluable to ship model-makers. As a monument to the men of the destroyer force and to their ships, the book is unsurpassable.

This is the only history of U. S. Destroyer development based entirely on the internal, formerly classified papers of the U. S. Navy. For all who would like to understand the origins of the present Navy, and for all who hope to shape the Navy of the future, U. S. Destroyers is vital reading.”

The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". From the cover: “Computer and telecommunication technologies are becoming increasingly convergent and the UK Post Office, in conjunction with the National Computing Centre Ltd has produced this Handbook as a contribution to a greater understanding of their interdependence by students of both disciplines.

Based on Post Office Data Communication Courses, the subjects covered in the Handbook are those which we have found from several years’ teaching experience to be the ones needed by the average student. The book should be of value to systems analysts, systems programmers and systems engineers, although it should also be a good reference for management and newcomers to computing.

Apart from giving particular attention to the facilities available in the UK and the Post Office’s role in data communications, the book provides an insight to the facilities available internationally.”

Improved grassland management by John Frame (£34.00)Publisher: Farming Press — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0852362463]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs, tables and charts. From the cover: “In all its diverse forms, grass is the renewable foundation feed for ruminant production — the green gold of many rural regions and, indeed, countries. Competition for agricultural markets, intensifying in a world growing ever smaller, together with a host of economic and political pressures, requires swift and flexible response and adaptation from grassland farmers to the challenge of change and improved efficiency of use. Precision of inputs, predictability of outputs and profitability are triple objectives.

Against this background, this book subdivides grassland management into its interrelated components before dealing with utilisation by grazing and by hay/silage. The approach taken is the application to practice of basic scientific principles using mainly British and European grassland as examples. Nevertheless, the principles can be applied to grassland elsewhere in the temperate world. Management in relation to the new surge of interest in extensification, forage legume use, nature conservation and environmentally sustainable systems of animal production is also covered.

Written in a reader-friendly, advisory style, Improved Grassland Management is a book for grassland farmers, extension officers, students of agriculture and land use and plant scientists — in fact for everyone with an interest in Mother Earth’s green carpet.”

Very slightly ruffled edges of DJ.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Britain has a proud maritime heritage encompassing the impressive history of the Royal Navy, as well as the contribution made by civilian seafarers over the years. Yet rather than dwelling on the past, the focus of this book goes beyond the current horizon and embraces the advances that have been made in all spheres of contemporary life. Accordingly, we identified a breathtakingly diverse host of organizations and institutions, many of them international, which, through excellence in their particular spheres, continue to contribute to one common aim. That aim is to ensure that Britain remains a prosperous, outward-looking force for good in the world community, as well as a tolerant and benevolent nation which some 60 million of us are privileged to call home.”Notes: Size: 11¾" x 8½". Wisdom Of The Wild: How We Treat Our Planet by Anon. (£26.50)Publisher: Word Wide Fund for Nature — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Presentation plate to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “There is no turning back. There never has been in history. Two hundred million American citizens are not going to leave the USA just to give back to the Indians the land that was stolen from them. The Inuit in Greenland are not about to climb into their kayaks to paddle back up the river of history. The wisdom with which “wild” peoples have animated their world cannot be fetched back at will. Nevertheless, there is a great deal to learn. This, for example: how, on the threshold of the third millennium, can we live once again in a finite world without consuming it? Pedagogues tell us that children need elements of the wild and disorder in order to become mentally sound adults. The child in its den is said to be subconsciously remembering the feeling of safety which our ancestors experienced in caves in the childhood of mankind. In Sweden, they let children fly back to the beginnings of humanity on the wings of their imagination, as it were. The wild as a tonic.

Henry David Thoreau’s suggestion that every major city should have some wildness in its vicinity (because otherwise its inhabitants would revert to the wild) is almost one hundred and fifty years old — and highly topical in view of the frustration which people feel in our concrete bunkers.

An end must be put to the dominance of the right angle. Protection programmes for spacious areas of wilderness have one purpose, among others, namely to preserve the charm of untouched nature. Real-life magic! Magic, or rather cheap tricks — that is what our oh-so-en-lightened world thought of the healing knowledge of the jungle Indians for such a long time. Until, at the sight of the burning rain forests, they realised that the best pharmacy in the world was going up in flames.

The awareness of its utility should not be the rescuers’ sole motive, however. If we only take up arms in defence of the earth where our immediate living conditions are threatened, we shall soon be sitting amidst the ruins of a barren planet. It is (unfortunately, some would say) not the case that when the trees die, man also dies immediately. There are no trees in the Mongolian steppes, but they are still not dead. The fact is, as an Indian chief once said: “After the deaths of plants and animals, you will die of the great loneliness in your hearts.” An appeal has been filed against this death sentence. This book contains a few passages from the defence counsel’s speech.”

Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers.Description: No. 2 in the series. First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “This book teaches the reader how to use the Commodore 64’s graphics features. It assumes that the reader is already fairly competent in BASIC programming. Each new principle is introduced step by step, beginning with PEEK and POKE (Chapter One) and ending with sprite collision routines (Chapter Five). On the way, the reader explores bit-map mode, multicolour bit-map mode, extended colour mode, character design and sprite design. At every stage the points are illustrated with clear, easy-to-follow examples. Four major programs are developed in the book: two games and two utilities. The first game is called ‘Breakout’, a bat and ball game used to illustrate the use of the Commodore’s screen and colour memory locations. The second game is called ‘Target’ and uses sprites to provide a challenging and tricky game. The two utilities, ‘Char.Gen’ and ‘sprite.Gen’ are used for designing characters and sprites respectively. Commodore 64 programmers will need only a little imagination to realise the vast potential that these tools offer.”Notes: Size: 10¼" x 6¾". In the Watson's Workbooks series. In particular, it focuses on the consequences of the break-up of the political, economic and social settlements that had sustained the 'old' welfare state in the thirty years after the Second World War. This is the fourth of five books in a new series of introductory social policy texts published by Routledge in association with The Open University. Family Car Companion by John Mills (£23.00)Publisher: Pelham — 1966Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, pulled at the head of the upper panel with a short tear, light spotting to the upper panel, heavier to the lower. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Drawings; Diagrams;

From the cover: “In the pages of the Family Car Companion the author chats happily about cars and how to enjoy them. Yes, that’s the word — enjoy them.

His approach, as Editor of Car Mechanics — Europe’s highest selling monthly motoring magazine — is a practical one. There are over 60 photographs and many ‘exploded’ drawings (all specially done for this book) which make a valuable complementary addition to the text.

John Mills has carefully considered all the problems likely to be encountered by the family motorist. A few examples:
  • He analyses different cooling systems and explains how they work.
  • He devotes a chapter to decoking.
  • He tells you what to look for if you are buying a second-hand car (some 3,000,000 change hands every year).
  • He gives you hints on how to deal with starting trouble.
  • He shows you how to slash petrol bills.
  • He gives sound advice on that expensive item for the family motorist — tyres.
  • He tells you how to prevent rust.
  • He examines the difficulties of driving in snow, ice and heavy rain.
  • He tells you about 'that spark'.
  • He shows you how to prevent your car being stolen.

Forming Nation, Framing Welfare by Gail Lewis (£23.00)Publisher: Routledge — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0415181305]Condition: Near Fine. Plain white lable to upper wrap otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: This book considers the ways in which the development of social welfare in the UK has been intimately woven into the construction of the nation. The growth of the state's involvement in social welfare is at the heart of these processes, but the book also explores the ways in which the making of the family, struggles over social order and the rise of philanthropy played central roles in the construction of both nation and welfare. Drawing on a range of case studies dealing with the family, education, poverty and unemployment, this innovative book teases out the intersections between images of the nation and social welfare's purposes, providers and beneficiaries.Notes: Size: 4to Crown (25 x 19cm Approx.). 296 pages. The Imperial Ming tombs: Text and Photos by Ann Paludan (£22.50)Publisher: Hong Kong University Press — 1981Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 962209029X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In the Ming Valley just outside Peking, thirteen of the sixteen emperors of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) lie buried in one of the largest and most splendid Imperial mausolea in the world. Although almost every visitor to Peking is taken to see the Ming Tombs, surprisingly little has been written about them, and only two of the tombs are widely known to foreigners. This excellent contemporary guide to the tombs handsomely illustrated with the author’s own photographs, will awaken both scholars and tourists to the history and monuments of the entire valley.

The book opens with a brief history of the mausolea and accounts of the classical Chinese philosophy of death and geomancy and the traditional principles of Chinese architecture. In descriptions that are marked by a sensitivity not only to architectural and sculptural details but to total surroundings, the author then familiarizes us with each of the tombs and the emperors buried in them. Paludan’s view is an encompassing one, and her observations range from decorative ornament and drainage systems to birdlife and flora.

A map of the Ming Valley is included, along with charts for each tomb showing the current state of walls and buildings.”

Robo Sapiens: Evolution of a New Species by Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio (£21.00)Publisher: Cambridge, London: The MIT Press — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0262133822]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: Jacket illustration: A face robot from the Hara-Kobayashi laboratory of the Science University of Tokyo. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Around the world, scientists and engineers are participating in a high-stakes race to build the first intelligent robot. Many robots already exist — automobile factories are full of them. But the new generation of robots will be something else: smart machines that act ever more like living creatures.

What will happen then? With our prosthetic limbs, titanium hips, and artificial eyes, we are already beginning to resemble our machines. And when we implant chips in our bodies to connect ourselves directly to computers, the likeness will become only more pronounced. Science fiction will have become science fact.

Meanwhile — and equally important — our machines are beginning to resemble us. Robotic spiders, crabs, geckos, and dogs are already spilling from the laboratories. The next steps are to re-create Homo sapiens itself and then go beyond. Robots can already walk, talk, and dance; they can react to human facial expressions and obey verbal commands. When scientists go on to create fully autonomous robots with greater intelligence than human beings, will they be our partners or our rivals? Will it be simply a robotic revolution or a true extension of evolution? Could machines and humankind meld into a single species — Robo sapiens ?

In Robo sapiens, award-winning journalists Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio present the next generation of intelligent robots and their makers. Accompanying brilliant photographs of more than a hundred robots are extensive interviews with robotics pioneers, anecdotal field notes with behind-the-scenes information, and easy-to-understand technical data about the machines. Robo sapiens is a field guide to our mechanical future.”
