The Piercebridge Formula: A Dramatic New View of Roman History by Raymond Selkirk (£88.00)Publisher: Patrick Stephens — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0850596211]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine and slightly onto the panels of the dust wrapper. Upper board slightly dust-marked. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Though deceptively simple, the Piercebridge Formula will revolutionise our view of Roman Britain. Its implications are destined to influence archaeologists for many years to come. For what freelance pilot turned amateur archaeologist Raymond Selkirk has discovered is that the Roman Conquest of Britain was carried out by water transport and not by road as has been commonly supposed. His theory was proved at Piercebridge, on the River Tees, where, by a combination of brilliant aerial surveys and detective work on the ground, he found the archetypal water-supplied Roman site. For some time he had strongly suspected that waterways must be the answer, for how could ox-carts have travelled on Roman roads which often climbed gradients which would daunt a modern saloon car? Also, how could the oxen have carried any load at all when they would have needed all their strength merely to pull carts laden with fodder for themselves?

At Piercebridge it became clear that where a Roman road crosses a river, there is an excellent chance of finding a Roman site. This formula was then applied to other areas… and it worked! At one time the finding of an unknown site was a rarity but Selkirk and his team of enthusiasts produced remarkable results in a very short time. Yet the full effects of the Piercebridge Formula are only just starting to be felt, for what is true of Britain must logically apply to the whole Roman Empire. The prospects for further exploration are therefore tremendous and the author goes to great lengths to enlist the aid of his readers, both at home and abroad, in following up leads which will help to uncover further remains. Suspected sites are all named with exact locations and map references so that those with sufficient enthusiasm may continue this fascinating quest. The storm which this book will cause in archaeological circles has barely started, the search has only just begun.”

Knights of the Black Cross: Hitler's Panzerwaffe and Its Leaders by Bryan Perrett (£58.50)Publisher: Robert Hale — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0709028067]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “The German Armoured Corps — the Panzerwaffe — was instrumental in the mighty conquests of the Nazis between 1939 and 1942 and in the remaining years of the war it provided the very backbone of Germany’s defence. Although its strength never exceeded one-fifth of the German Army, the commitment of the Panzerwaffe’s officers to the traditional Annihilation Concept made an enormous impact on the Second World War, particularly on the Eastern Front. The titanic struggles which took place there, after the early victories in Poland, the West and the Balkans, demonstrated the German tank soldiers’ superior tactical abilities and provided the basis of Soviet war theories to this day.

Bryan Perrett’s meticulously researched and incisive account tells the story of this remarkable band of soldiers, the evolution of their tactics and the development of their superlative fighting vehicles. An authoritative study which will fascinate the military expert and general reader alike.”

Francesco's Venice: The Dramatic History of the World's Most Beautiful City by Francesco Da Mosto (£24.00)Publisher: London: BBC Books — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0563521376]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour photographs; Photographic end papers & blanks;

From the cover: “Francesco’s Venice is the extraordinary story of the life of this intriguing city, told by a descendant of an old and distinguished Venetian family.

Francesco da Mosto’s ancestral history is inextricably intertwined with that of this amphibious city. Fiercely proud and protective of the rich cultural and architectural heritage of his birthplace, Francesco gives us a unique insight into the inner workings of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. He explores Venice’s remarkable history, from the fifth century when the first settlers retreated to the safety of the lagoon and began to create their homes on its tiny islands, through its glorious years as a successful maritime nation, adept at trade, exploration, diplomacy and protecting its independence, to the fragile city of the twenty-first century.

Venice’s history is a tale of warfare and conspiracies, of artistic excellence and ingenuity, of the battle of wills and of ideas, and of strength in the face of disaster, and Francesco vividly brings to life the places, events and people that have sculpted this living theatre through the ages. These include a colourful array of his own ancestors, such as the six da Mostos who were involved in the rise and fall of the ambitious and corrupt Doge Falier, and the young Alvise da Mosto, a courageous and determined explorer of the fifteenth century.

Beautifully illustrated with stunning images by John Parker of both the magnificent symbols of the city, including St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, and the more secluded corners, Francesco’s Venice celebrates the mesmerizing beauty and surprising strength of this unique city.”

The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Antonia Fraser (£21.00)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0297812424]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a light pull to the foot of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the first blank — unverified (a cursory search suggests authenticity) and reflected as such in the lack of premium.

From the cover: “Divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived. So the six wives of Henry VIII — Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr -have become defined in a popular sense not so much by their lives as by the way these lives ended. In the same way their characters are popularly portrayed as female stereotypes: the Betrayed Wife, the Temptress, the Good Woman, the Ugly Sister, the Bad Girl and, finally, the Mother Figure.

But, as Antonia Fraser brilliantly and conclusively proves, they were rich and feisty characters. They may have been victims of Henry’s obsession with a male heir, but they were not willing victims. On the contrary, they exhibited remarkable degrees of spirit and defiance of which women living now might still be proud. They displayed considerable strength and intelligence at a time when their sex supposedly possessed little of either.

Antonia Fraser deals with each woman in turn with sympathy — the sympathy they deserve for having had the unenviable fate of being Henry’s wife. Inevitably there was great rivalry between them, so high were the stakes in the great game of marrying the King of England. There was jealousy too — the desperate jealousy of Queens who found themselves abandoned, but also the sexual jealousy of the King who discovered himself betrayed.

The story Antonia Fraser tells is romantic and cruel, funny and sad, dramatic and enthralling. This is historical biography at its very best.”

Spirit of the Horse by Bob Langrish & Nicola Jane Swinney (£20.50)Publisher: Parragon — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9781405498487]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “MANKIND HAS enjoyed a unique relationship with the horse from time immemorial. No other animal has provided such intelligent, loyal service, whether as a worker, conveyance, status symbol or -in today’s times — a leisure occupation. The horse has even generated an entire industry from which many people make their living. The horse has offered humans his strength and loyalty, and in return, we have bestowed upon him a status which is perhaps above that of all other animals.

Differences in terrain, climate and man’s requirements have shaped and developed the wide variety of types and breeds of horse existing today, most of which have been extravagantly portrayed in Spirit of the Horse. Here you will find the tiny Shetland and the massive Shire, the wild horses which — despite modern-day domesticity — can still be found in every continent, the Thoroughbreds and European Warmbloods — scientifically bred for competition — as well as a fascinating variety of native ponies. The unique and much-loved characteristics of all these and more have been faithfully researched by equestrian journalist Nicola Jane Swinney and imaginatively captured by the renowned horse photographer Bob Langrish.”

Letters to a young gymnast by Nadia Comaneci (£18.00)Publisher: New York: Basic Books — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0465012760]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Description: From the cover: “ If there were such a thing as an elder stateswoman in women’s gymnastics today, Nadia Comaneci would win that title as readily as she once won gold medals. Olga Korbut came before her, and many other medalists would follow, but none has ever been as dominant in winning the hearts of millions around the world. With grit and determination, Nadia Comaneci ushered in a new era for women’s sports, one where young girls could vault into the arena of super-stardom. Even today, almost thirty years after her greatest triumphs, you need only mention the word “Nadia” and gymnastics fans know instantly whom you are talking about.

In Letters to A Young Gymnast, Nadia shows us what it takes to achieve these heights. With inspiring and dramatic stories from her own experience, she tells us how the young girl that Bela Karolyi discovered in a Romanian elementary school found the inner strength to become a world-class athlete at such a young age. Now a woman of tremendous poise and self-assurance, Nadia offers up unique insights into the mind of a top competitor. From how to live on after you’ve realized your dream, to the necessity of a spirit forged with mettle, Nadia’s thoughts on athleticism and sacrifice are eye-opening and surprisingly challenging.”

The Rise and Fall of Imperial Japan, 1894-1945 by Edited by S. L. Mayer (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241428]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, short closed and tape-reinforced to the spine ends. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint. [First: 1984 thus, previously published as ‘The Japanese War Machine’ in 1976] Maps to the endpapers. Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In 1868, Japan emerged from feudalism and civil conflict as a comparatively undeveloped industrial state in an age of European imperialism in East Asia. Within a generation, Japan had risen to the ranks of the foremost industrial and military powers in the Western Pacific. A generation later, Japan had become the paramount power in East Asia, and her naval and air forces spread Japanese power across the Pacific. The formidable weapon built in the name of the Emperor swept across China and Manchuria; her air forces pummelled Pearl Harbor and Darwin; her armies marched to Singapore and the gates of India. Her navies seized some Aleutian islands and strafed the California coast. By 1942 the world had come to know the power of the most devastating force in the Pacific — the Japanese War Machine.

The force and power of the Japanese War Machine is told here by some of the world’s leading experts in guns, tanks, planes, and ships of World War II. The drama of Japan’s seizure of Manchuria, the take-over of the State by the Army, the invasion of China, the simultaneous attack on Malaya, Hawaii, the Philippines and the oil-rich Dutch East Indies is told in all the horror and shock the Japanese invader placed before Western eyes. The fall of Singapore and Hong Kong, the conquest of Burma and Indo-China took place within a hundred days. The flag of the Rising Sun ruled a maritime empire from the Russian border to the gates of Australia, from Burma to Midway.

But the strength of the Japanese War Machine depended on Japanese industrial power, which in the end, was no match for the United States and its Allies. The Japanese soldier, infused with the warrior code of Bushido fought hard and long in New Guinea’s jungles; as the struggle was brought closer to Japan’s home islands, the Japanese soldier fought on tenaciously in the Philippines and on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The air forces began suicide missions, thekamikaze, which drove into Allied aircraft, heroically and fanatically.. .but all too little, too late. The nuclear holocaust, which ended World War II, left a ruined Japan and a wrecked Japanese War Machine.

THE RISE AND FALL OF IMPERIAL JAPAN is the tragic and noble history of a gallant people led into a misguided war. The millions who suffered in Asia and the Pacific in the wake of the Japanese War Machine bear silent tribute to its folly.”

Napoleon's Soldiers: The Grand Armee of 1807 As Depicted in the Paintings of the Otto Manuscript by Guy C. Dempsey (£14.50)Publisher: London: Arms & Armour Press — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1854092421]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates;

From the cover: “The paintings in this handsome book represent one of the premier original sources available today for the study of Napoleonic military uniforms.

Taken from the Otto Manuscript, these watercolours afford a unique window on history that brings Napoleonic soldiers and uniforms into view in a way almost unprecedented for a pre-photographic era. Rather than stylised prints or lifeless salon artwork created long after the fact, these are the precise, vibrant record of an amateur artist’s first-hand observations, imbued with a spectacular intimacy as a result of the artist’s talent for faithfully reproducing even small details of dress and equipment.

Astonishingly, these priceless images have been virtually inaccessible to the public from the moment the paint dried. After first coming to modern notice when they were acquired earlier this century by Albert Depreaux, a French historian, they were copied during the Second World War, before the originals were sold to Anne S. K. Brown. They now reside in the collection that bears her name, at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.

Never before reproduced in book form, the entire set of 98 gouache illustrations now forms the centrepiece of this illustrated commentary of the Otto Manuscript (so-called because it is said to have once been the property of a certain Major Otto of Baden). Guy Dempsey offers a critical assessment of the manuscript, thereby confirming its strength as a primary source of research information, before discussing each painting and comparing the information it provides with data available from other sources.

These delightful images are excellent works of art in themselves, but their historical significance makes it remarkable that they have remained unpublished for so long. Historians and students of warfare, military uniform and the Napoleonic era will join modellers, wargamers and re-enactment groups in welcoming the publication of this important sourcework; indeed, the book will undoubtedly become a core element of many military history libraries.”

[ISBN: 0787974137]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Front flap has a light vertical crease otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “Why A Book About Wizards And Warriors as models for leadership? Because, as Peter Drucker once said, everything you learned is wrong — at best, it is misleading and insufficient. You typically learn in school, workshops, and seminars that if you can manage the work and serve the people, you have what it takes. It's not true. Maybe you have enough stuff to be a pretty good manager, but it takes a lot more to be a good leader. The Wizard and the Warrior gives leaders the insight and courage they need to take risks on behalf of values they cherish and the people they guide. Great leaders must act both as wizard, calling on imagination, creativity, meaning, and magic, and as warrior, mobilizing strength, courage, and willingness to fight as necessary to fulfil their mission.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". From the flap: “The life of Lal Bahadur Shastri (1904-66), India's second prime minister and successor to Jawaharlal Nehru, is the absorbing saga of a little man, who while suffering the rigours of poverty in early life, rose to political eminence on the strength of moral principle. When he died he left no land, no house, and no money. But he did leave behind an example which is morally inspiring. The author of this biography was Shastri's personal aide for several years. He was with Shastri until the last day of his life, in Tashkent. He collected a large number of original documents from the USA; he interviewed bureaucrats, politicians and diplomats who were associated with Shastri's life and career; he travelled in Shastri's footsteps within India and abroad; he consulted medical experts to ascertain the truth about Shastri's death.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The Luftwaffe by Editors of Time-Life Books (£13.50)Publisher: Time Life — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1844470318]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper snagged at the head of the spine with a short, closed and tape-backed, tear. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Maps; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “In March 1935, only two years after he came to power in Germany. Adolf Hitler openly defied the Treaty of Versailles imposed on his country at the end of World War I and announced a massive program of rearmament. The plan called for a Reichsluftwaffe, a national air force whose squadrons, as Nazi propagandists said, would put, a “steel roof over Germany” and “darken out the sun”.

At the time, the nation’s frontline air strength amounted to a mere three squadrons of fighters and five of bombers — all forbidden under the Treaty. Hut Hitler missed no opportunity to endow his nascent air arm with an aura of pride and power. In carefully arranged ceremonies, he gave Luftwaffe units names redolent of past glories; the first such event took place on March 14, 1935, when he dubbed a fighter squadron Jogdgesch wader Richthofen after Germany’s top World War I ace. And during the gaudy displays of military might staged at Nuremberg each year after that, he saw to it that squadrons of planes blazoned with black crosses thundered overhead.

The chief purpose of these spectacles was simply to awe other countries, but the Luftwaffe was in fact becoming a mighty force. Its commander, Hermann Goring, with vital aid from his efficient production chief Erhard Milch, performed prodigies to make the Reich’s air fleets truly potent. The output of Germany’s aircraft industry shot upward from a few hundred planes a year to thousands. Simultaneously, new combat machines replaced obsolete models, until virtually all of the Luftwaffe’s fighters and bombers were swift monoplanes of all-metal construction. By 1939, when Hitler set into motion his schemes for European conquest, the Luftwaffe boasted more than 4,000 frontline combat aircraft, making it the most formidable air force in the world.”

Clipper Ship by Denys Burrows (£13.00)Publisher: Educational Press / Angus & Robertson — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “This exciting adventure story of the nineteenth century is concerned with a ship — a tea-clipper on the Australia-China run; but even more so, it is concerned with the men and boys who sail in her.

The Dauntless is a dirty hulk when Captain Grey and his son, lan, first sight her, berthed listlessly at a wharf in Melbourne. The first member of the crew they meet as they go aboard — the Mate, Grogan, with his uncouth manners and jeering talk — doesn’t improve the picture.

Second Mate Jackson takes an instant dislike to “Apprentice Grey” and determines to make him break down, if he can. The Skipper refuses to interfere in case it looks like favouritism towards his son, and because the boy has to learn to stand on his own feet.

Captain Grey turns the Dauntless into a tight, well-run ship, but it takes a whole voyage and return to do it, a voyage full of adventure: man overboard in the Pacific, a kidnapping in China, and a typhoon on the trip back — not to mention the strange machinery crates found in the hold and the even stranger cargo discovered when the ship leaves Canton.”

Winston Churchill: The Flawed Genius of World War II by Christopher Catherwood (£13.00)Publisher: Berkley Caliber — 2009Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0425225720]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Front flap has a small crease otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Revered for his strength of character and his willful defiance of Nazi Germany when Britain stood alone against the Third Reich, Winston Churchill is cherished as one of World War IIs most heroic figures, not only within the United Kingdom but throughout the world. His legacy during one of the darkest eras in human history paints a portrait of the man as a wonderful, larger-than-life personality — a characterization that overshadows his faults and his foibles in those crucial years.

But those faults and foibles had a devastating legacy of their own.

Winston Churchill — The Flawed Genius of World War II examines the decisions and policies Churchill made in the vital months between June 1940 and December 1941 that hindered more than helped the Allied cause. From dispatching British troops to North Africa and Greece and establishing the Special Operations Executive, to his insistence on the Mediterranean’s importance to victory and ignoring George C. Marshall’s plan that would have won the war in 1943, Churchill’s directives not only extended the conflict, but also destabilized several regions that remain in chaos even at the dawn of the twenty-first century.

With profound insight into Churchill’s early colonial experiences as well as his first tenure as First Lord of the Admiralty, Christopher Catherwood offers an honest appraisal of his strategies in a unique and fascinating perspective that separates the myth from the man.”

Stevie Smith: A Biography by Frances Spalding (£12.50)Publisher: W. W. Norton & Co. — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0393026728]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Leans slightly. Small address sticker to the first blank.Description: First U.S. Edition. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Born in Hull. But moved to London at the age of 3 and has lived in the same house ever since, wrote Stevie Smith when asked by an editor for a biographical note. The lack of external events in her life is to many people the best-known thing about her. Yet she was far from reclusive, as this brilliant new biography shows, and was actively involved in the social as well as intellectual life of literary London, with interruptions, from the early 1930s until her death in 1971.

Frances Spalding reveals and explores the intimate relationship between the course of Stevie Smith’s life and the evolution of her art, into which she has assimilated, not simply the events and emotions of her private life, but influences on her imagination of her wide and varied reading. The ambivalence of these influences on both form and content has inhibited serious discussion of her work, and it is the strength of this book that in its sensitive unravelling of that ambivalence it enables Stevie Smiths oeuvre to be seen as a whole. While showing that the life of the mind can be a valid subject for biography, it also shows that the external events of the poet’s life do in fact provide the subject of an absorbing and entertaining narrative.”

First Edition. [ISBN: 0853154899]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “From its foundation in 1898 ‘The Fed’ has remained the popular name for the South Wales Miners’ Federation (SWMF), which in 1945 became the South Wales Area of the National Union of Mine workers. The core of this full-length history is the momentous period from the General Strike of 1926 to the nationalization of the mines in January 1947, including the bitter intervening period of struggle in the twenties and thirties against unemployment at home and fascism abroad. To the treatment of the post Second World War period the authors have added a final chapter assessing the achievements and the problems of the nationalized industry, as well as the role of the miners in the upsurge of industrial militancy that characterized the sixties and seventies. Native Welsh themselves, both from the South Wales mining area, the authors show how ‘The Fed’ has derived its particular strength from being an organic part of the life of individual South Wales communities, and they vividly record the rich variety of working-class (especially rank-and-file) response to Union as well as governmental attitudes and actions.”Notes: 530 pages. Sharpe's Escape: Richard Sharpe and the Bussaco Campaign 1810 by Bernard Cornwell (£11.50)Publisher: London: HarperCollinsPublishers — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0007120133]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Maps;

From the cover: “It is 1810 and the French are making yet another attempt to invade Portugal. Facing them is a wasted land, stripped of food by Wellington’s orders, and Captain Richard Sharpe. But Sharpe is in trouble. His job as Captain of the Light Company is under threat and he has made a new enemy, a Portuguese criminal known as Ferragus. Sharpe, discarded by his regiment, wages a private war against Ferragus — a war fought through the burning, pillaged streets of Coimbra, Portugal’s ancient university city.

Sharpe’s enemies are numerous but on his side he has Sergeant Patrick Harper, the Portuguese officer Jorge Vincent and a prickly English governess, whose first aim is to clean up Sharpe’s language.

Sharpe’s Escape begins on the great, gaunt ridge of Bussaco where a joint British and Portuguese army meets the overwhelming strength of Marshall Massena’s crack troops. It finishes at Torres Vedras where the French hopes of occupying Portugal quickly die. This is a classic Sharpe novel, with Richard Sharpe in his finest form reunited with Patrick Harper, and facing enemies on every side.”

War in the Gulf: From The Invasion of Kuwait to the Day of Victory and Beyond by Thomas B. Allen; F. Clifton Berry; Norman Polmar; (£11.50)Publisher: Time Warner — 1991Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0708853366]Condition: Very Good+. A little wear to the edges of the wraps, some fading of the upper panel near spine. Internally bright and clean.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Television viewers throughout the world saw the Persian Gulf War while it happened. War in the Gulf translates the immediacy of that televised war into the traditional form for recounting events: a book.

The idea for the book came from the Cable News Network, which provided the authors with CNN’s eyewitness record of the war. The strength of television news is its imagery; the weakness of television is its fleetingness. Images flash past, reporters’ words fade away. To preserve this perishable chronicle, CNN turned to a team of book writers. Their sources included the films and transcripts of CNN war coverage. They have made a narrative of instants of war.

Television coverage of the Persian Gulf War changed the face of war. No longer can war be an event faraway in time and place. Television made war immediate. That is part of the story of the Persian Gulf War. Reporting on the war means reporting about television.

The war, through television, was not something that happened over there, but something that happened now. Viewers in a score of nations saw their loved ones in a war while the war was being fought. American mothers and fathers saw sons and daughters at the moment a desert wind swept through a tent city, at the moment that tracers laced a far-off sky. Iraqis saw a Tomahawk missile skimming the Baghdad skyline — and television viewers simultaneously saw the Iraqis seeing the Tomahawk. These images within images spiralled on and on, each a moment that wiped out distance, leaving only time and feeling.”

Galileo's Daughter: A Drama Of Science, Faith And Love by Dava Sobel (£10.50)Publisher: Fourth Estate — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1857028619]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper.Description: From the cover: “Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was the foremost scientist of his day, the man Albert Einstein was to call ‘the father of modern physics — indeed of modern science altogether’. Though he never left the Italy of his birth, his inventions and discoveries were heralded around the world. His telescopes allowed him to reveal a new reality in the heavens and to publicly propound the astounding argument that the Earth actually moves around the Sun. For this belief he was brought before the Holy Office of the Inquisition, tried for heresy and threatened with torture. In contrast, his daughter, Virginia, became a cloistered nun. Born in 1600, she was thirteen when Galileo placed her in a convent near him in Florence, where she took the most appropriate name of Suor Maria Celeste. Galileo later said of her that she had an exquisite mind, and her intelligence and loving support proved to be her father’s greatest source of strength through his most difficult years.

Inspired by her long fascination with Galileo, and by the remarkable surviving letters of his daughter, which she has translated into English for the first time, Dava Sobel has written a book that brings Galileo to life as never before. A man who was compelled to explain the truths he discovered, he was a faithful Catholic devoted to family and, especially, to his daughter. Their voices, and those of others who touched their lives, echo down the centuries through letters and writings, which Sobel masterfully weaves into her narrative, building towards the crescendo of history’s most dramatic collision between science and religion. In the process, Dava Sobel illuminates an entire era, when the flamboyant Medici Grand Dukes became Galileo’s patrons, when the bubonic plague wreaked its terrible devastation and prayer was the most effective medicine, when the Thirty Years’ War tipped fortunes across Europe, and when one man fought, through his trial and betrayal by his former friend, Pope Urban VIII, to reconcile the Heaven he revered as a good Catholic with the heavens he revealed through his telescope. Galileo’s Daughter is an unforgettable story.”

Political Change in Britain: Forces Shaping Electoral Choice by David Butler; Donald Stokes; (£10.50)Publisher: MacMillan St. Martin's Press — 1970Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, heavily faded at the spine. Price Clipped. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding.Description: Reprint. [First: 1969] From the cover: “This landmark book, by two leading political scientists, one American and one British, is a fundamental study of the processes that have transformed the strength of the parties in modern Britain. Drawing on evidence from repeated interviews with a nationwide sample of the electorate, the authors analyse changes of three broad kinds: those which involve a physical replace ment of the population through births and deaths, those which involve shifts of lasting partisan alignments such as those of religion and class, and those which involve more transient movements of party preference in response to passing issues, events, and leaders.

They apply a series of novel analytic frameworks to the political changes of the 1959 and 1964 parliaments and, indeed, of the whole span of the twentieth century. The findings represent a major advance in our understanding of the meaning of politics for ordinary people, the changes of a. voter’s political attitudes as he ages, the role of political issues and political ideologies, the contribution of the national press and television to political change, the appeal of the leaders of the parties for the electorate, and the interlocking of economic and political trends.

There is a fresh treatment of the place of class in party allegiance, one that emphasises the rise of the great class alignment of the parties in the earlier decades of the century and the signs of a weakening of class politics recently. Evidence is presented of the remarkable fluidity of attachment to parties in the last few years and of unsuspected complexities behind the idea of party swings. Employing the concepts of a political life-cycle for the voter and of political generations, the authors trace the effects of the move ments of successive generations through the electorate, demonstrating the political effects of class differences in birth rates and death rates.

This book contains entirely fresh evidence about the basis of political differences by region and locality and gives new perspectives on the effects of Liberal intervention, the economic affluence of recent years, and the several levels of campaign that are fought in the weeks before the final choice of a government.

Although this book uses evidence gathered from the British electorate in the early 1960s and makes a contribution to the understanding of that period, its significance is not confined to a particular time or a particular country. A large proportion of the concepts it develops (as far as possible in non-technical language) are relevant to almost any democratic society.”
