Campaign Trading: Tactics and Strategies to Exploit the Markets by Jack Sweeney (£68.00)Publisher: John Wiley & Sons — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 047114150X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the head of the spine otherwise a very well presented copy. The boards and spine appear to have been "recovered" before the application of the titling with a small area of overlap of the cloth. Not unpleasant. Odd. Binding unaffected.Description: From the cover: “Success in the trading arena requires the ability to change strategies on a regular basis in order to accommodate moves in the market and shifts in investment preferences. And while having a solid trading system in place is important for attaining favorable and profitable results, it is equally important to have an overall approach that is flexible. After all, any given system is only effective for a certain period of time, under a specific set of circumstances. Campaign Trading gives you the tools you need to develop a strong trading style that can be adjusted, refined, and retuned, when necessary, to meet the demands of current market behavior.

Author John Sweeney, Technical Editor of the highly regarded Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities magazine, has written a one-of-a-kind book that focuses on the “big picture”. He maps out a game plan with which you can win the trading war, not just the isolated battles. Covering essential topics such as the basics and anomalies of campaigning, reversing bad trades, reversing out of ranges, and using options to shift the odds, this invaluable reference shows you how to build a sound base for campaigning. You will learn what measurement techniques to use, how to test trading rules for effectiveness and how to pick the types of trades you will use in future campaigns.”

Teamwork in Industry by F. J. Burns Morton (£63.00)Publisher: Chapman & Hall — 1948Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with loss at the head of the upper panel and closed tears to the lower. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Tanning and spotting to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “The author’s previous book, The New Foremanship, endeavoured to propound and analyse the problem of supervision in the light of present circumstances and likely trends. It was suggested that new methods of supervision were "necessary to bring social relationships, which in industry had remained static, into line with the great developments which had taken place in technical organisation; and further, what was needed in foremanship was also necessary in other managerial practices.

This present book, which is also addressed to all in authority and to those thinking employees who believe in the possibilities, of their jobs, sets out to show the direction of the second step. It examines the nature of better working relationships, and shows that harmonious, consciously directed working together leads to increased efficiency. Thus the name Teamwork in Industry.

The twelve chapters discuss such vital topics as the human factor and the influencing of human behaviour, co-operation and industrial relations, job satisfaction, selection and training of staff, incentives, leadership, supervision, discipline, absenteeism, working conditions and social organisation. The book concludes with a useful bibliography and index.”

The Barrier and the Javelin: Japanese and Allied Strategies, February-June, 1942 by H. P. Willmott (£36.00)Publisher: Annapolis: Naval Institute Press — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0870210920]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Distributors sticker covers publisher colophon on the title page. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “H. P. Willmott’s perceptive analysis of Japanese and Allied strategies in the Pacific war has set new standards for World War Two historians. The scope and depth of the research he did for the first book of his Pacific trilogy, Empires in the Balance, have earned him a reputation as a major chronicler of the period. With this second volume, Willmott continues to offer significant new material and interpretations that are certain to warrant further study.

The Barrier and the Javelin begins with a thoughtful assessment of the critical situation in which Japan found herself in the spring of 1942. Even by that early stage of the Pacific war, the fundamental weakness of the Japanese effort was evident. Japan had gone to war with little more than a five-month plan of campaign and the conviction that she could not be defeated by enemies who were her moral inferiors. Her intention had been to conquer territories essential to her economic survival and then fight a defensive war that would exhaust her enemies and lead them to a negotiated settlement. By the spring Japan’s leaders were becoming uncom-fortably aware that their enemies would not negotiate and that they themselves lacked the plans, and perhaps the means, to make them change their minds. Willmott sets out the arguments over strategy that plagued the Japanese naval command as it tried to formulate a coherent response to this potentially disastrous situation. In so doing he suggests that the weaknesses of the command’s decision-making process kept the Japanese from taking the one course of action that could have changed the outcome of the war, and were responsible for the ill-considered plan of campaign that began to fall apart in the Coral Sea in May’and ended in disaster four weeks later at Midway.

The book, however, is not confined to an examination of Japanese policymaking. Just as Empires in the Balance provides & critical appraisal of the moves made by all the combatants during the first five months of the war, so The Barrier and the Javelin places the Allied part of the February-June 1942 record alongside that of the Japanese. In doing so, it examines why the British and their dominions were totally unable to put together a proper Pacific policy in the opening phase of the war, and why the Americans came to accept a commitment to fight in the southwest Pacific when this area had barely figured in their prewar calculations. American intelligence gathering — Operation Magic — and its effect on the progress of the war are also described in full.

Willmott follows his assessment of the Allied situation with a detailed analysis of the battle of the Coral Sea and the action off Midway, which at last places these battles in their proper context. Debunking long-held beliefs about the com-parative strengths of the Japanese and Allied forces, he contends that in both battles the weaker fleet was defeated, not victorious as most accounts suggest. He further argues that if Japan was indeed fated to lose the war, then her defeat at Midway can hardly be regarded as the decisive battle so many claim it to be. Inevitability and decisiveness, he points out, are mutually exclusive terms.

Many readers will find Willmott’s treatment of the Japanese side of the battle of Midway an intriguing alternative to other books on the subject. He reveals some important new information that finally explains the inconsistencies found in previous accounts. His condemnation of Admiral Yama-moto’s inept handling of the entire fiasco is unusually clear and hard-hitting.

This view of the flow of events in the first half of 1942 provides one of the most comprehensive, balanced and readable studies of the period ever written. It will be of enduring interest to general readers as well as professional historians and students of World War Two.”

The New KGB: Engine of Soviet Power by W. R. Corson; R. T. Crowley; (£19.00)Publisher: Harvester Press — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper, small nick to the top corner of the lower panel. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “This stunning exposé is a fresh way of looking at the current operations and global strategies of the new KGB, and its increasingly powerful control of the entire Soviet state. The authors’ devastating analysis is that the KGB has forsaken its traditional role as the ‘shield and sword of the party’ to actively become master of the Soviet Communist Party and the dominant force in the government of the U.S.S.R. Their argument painstakingly traces the changes in the Soviet hierarchy that was started by the late KGB chief Yuri Andropov and which ended recently with the death of Konstantin Chernenko and the immediate naming of Mikhail Gorbachev to take charge of the Soviet Union in what was the quickest succession in Soviet history.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The Efficiency Experts: An Impartial Survey of Management Consultancy by Laura Tatham (£18.00)Publisher: Business Publications — 1964Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, slightly tanned. A nice copy of a not-so-common title.Description: From the cover: “Are management consultants the answer to a businessman’s prayer? Or are they unprincipled rogues who, for an exorbitant fee, tell a company nothing it does not already know and saddle it with a lot of elaborate, unnecessary and expensive procedures?

To answer these extreme questions and many more between, Laura Tatham has obtained first-hand evidence from dozens of consultants and from as many clients, both satisfied and dissatisfied. This book is the result of her inquiries.

An impartial survey, The Efficiency Experts examines in detail what management consultants are, how they work and what they set out to accomplish. It suggests ways in which the businessman can make best use of consultants, and how he can assess whether or not a firm is likely to do a good job. A number of case histories describe both successful and unsuccessful consulting assignments.”

But far less is known about the planning and strategic arguments that occurred on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as those that governed German military thinking on the likelihood, and projected defence, of an Allied invasion of Festung Europa. Part of the fascination of the whole story is the hypothetical questions which can be asked but which, because history can never be replayed, can never be fully answered; Would not Vienna have been a better strategic target than Paris? Excess testosterone, they argue, compels senior managers to make decisions intuitively, instinctively, quickly, and, unfortunately, disastrously. In this informative and enlightening book, Clancy and Krieg confront these “over-and-over again” marketers, who don’t have time to do it right the first time, but endless time and a company bankroll to do it wrong over and over again. The authors draw from their decades of consumer and business-to-business marketing experience to business-to-business marketing experience to describe the intuitive decision-making practices that permeate business today, and demonstrate how these practices lead to disappointing performance.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Winston Churchill: The Flawed Genius of World War II by Christopher Catherwood (£13.00)Publisher: Berkley Caliber — 2009Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0425225720]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Front flap has a small crease otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Revered for his strength of character and his willful defiance of Nazi Germany when Britain stood alone against the Third Reich, Winston Churchill is cherished as one of World War IIs most heroic figures, not only within the United Kingdom but throughout the world. His legacy during one of the darkest eras in human history paints a portrait of the man as a wonderful, larger-than-life personality — a characterization that overshadows his faults and his foibles in those crucial years.

But those faults and foibles had a devastating legacy of their own.

Winston Churchill — The Flawed Genius of World War II examines the decisions and policies Churchill made in the vital months between June 1940 and December 1941 that hindered more than helped the Allied cause. From dispatching British troops to North Africa and Greece and establishing the Special Operations Executive, to his insistence on the Mediterranean’s importance to victory and ignoring George C. Marshall’s plan that would have won the war in 1943, Churchill’s directives not only extended the conflict, but also destabilized several regions that remain in chaos even at the dawn of the twenty-first century.

With profound insight into Churchill’s early colonial experiences as well as his first tenure as First Lord of the Admiralty, Christopher Catherwood offers an honest appraisal of his strategies in a unique and fascinating perspective that separates the myth from the man.”
