The Wirral by Alan Brack (£20.50)Publisher: Phillimore & Co. — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0850336791]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint with amendments. [First Edition: 1980] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Wirral was already an old-established administrative unit at the time of Domesday Book. This book is concerned with all those aspects of the Wirral, whether of history, architecture or landscape, that give the peninsula its individuality. Well known as a writer on the locality, Alan Brack starts with the immense advantage of having lived there nearly all his life. His book is at once scholarly, readable and entertaining. He has studiously avoided the highly romanticised view which has persisted in other accounts of the area and his opening chapter, ‘A Place Apart’, sets the tone for the whole book. There are sections on Birkenhead and Wallasey and on Bebington and Bromborough. An authoritative account of the establishment of Ellesmere Port is followed by a chapter on the Urbanised Districts of Hoylake, Neston and Heswall, on the Urbanised, Unexpected and Purpose-built villages, on the open spaces and on crossing the Mersey. The description of Port Sunlight, with its vignette of Lord Leverhulme, is especially well-informed. Human interest relieves a generally topographical approach through the appearance in the local context of the many notable men and women who have been associated with the Wirral.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The 1 Glory — The Royal Navy 1914-1939 by Max Arthur (£11.50)Publisher: Trafalgar Square — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Drawing on the personal stories of those who have served during this period, he has created a unique narrative history of the senior service. Through extensive research he has sought out and interviewed over thirty survivors of the First World War Royal Navy — Jutland, Gallipoli, Zeebrugge, Q ships, K boats and flying in the RNAS are recalled in their own words. There are vivid accounts from ten men who fought at Jutland, where over 6000 were killed and from two privates of the Royal Naval Division who tell of the horrors of trench fighting at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. All recall the rigours of training and discipline during the early days of this century, including the oldest survivor of the Royal Navy at 103 years old.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". S.O.S.: Men Against the Sea by Bernard Edwards (£8.50)Publisher: New Guild — 1994Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1899694005]Condition: Very Good. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Pages very gently age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “This is a superbly dramatised chronicle of 29 ships the loss of which history, by and large, passed by. Few have ever heard of the Cospatrick, a fully rigged ship destroyed by fire off the Cape of Good Hope in 1874 with the loss of 400 lives, or the steamer Utopia which skewered itself on the ram-bow of a warship in Gibralter Bay and sank in five minutes taking 500 souls with it. A similar loss of life occurred when the Russian cruise liner Admiral Nakimov collided with a bulk carrier in the Black Sea in 1986. There was no loss of life when the cruise liner Oceanis sank off the coast of Transkei, thanks to the actions of a few non-seamen who displayed the true spirit of the Birkenhead. A total of 5,683 live were lost when these ships went down.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 206 pages. Route 66 AD: On the Trail of Ancient Roman Tourists by Tony Perrottet (£7.50)Publisher: Ebury Press — 2003Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0091888069]Condition: Very Good.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated with black and white photographs & maps. From the cover: “Travel writer Tony Ferrottet decided to retrace the steps of the world’s first tourists, the Ancient Romans, travelling from Rome, through to Greece, Turkey and Egypt. Taking his pregnant girlfriend with him, he misguidedly promised ‘No terror, no squalor’. Soon they were in Pompeii searching for the brothel, inspecting a rather feeble replica wooden horse at Troy and avoiding ‘Pyramidiots’ in Egypt. And it gradually became clear that, when it comes to Mediterranean holidays, not a lot has changed in two thousand years.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 418 pages. South By Java Head by Alistair MacLean (£5.50)Publisher: Fontana — 1961Binding: Paperback Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition.

From the cover: “The shattered city of Singapore is surrendering to the advancing Japs. Picking their way through the smoking rubble towards the quay are a straggling party of refugees — soldiers, nurses and civilians. Dawn sees them far out to sea but with the first murderous dive bombers already aimed at their ship. Thus begins an ordeal few are to survive, a nightmare succession of disasters wrought by the hell-bent Japs, the unrelenting tropical sun and by the survivors themselves, whose hatred and bitterness divides them one against the other.

Only one question remains in each of their minds — who will be the last one to die?”
