Medieval Sculpture by Roberto Salvini (£31.00)Publisher: London: Michael Joseph — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0718105788]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge dye has run slightly on the first blank and pastedown. Slight and light spotting to the start and finish. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Jacket illustration: Gothic Pieta from Seeon, Bavaria c. 1420-30. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates;

From the cover: “The history of medieval sculpture in Western Europe is often described as a gradual rediscovery of technical skill and naturalism. In this volume, the author approaches his subject from a different angle, tracing the development of sculpture against a background of changing political, social and religious structures and in relation to the growth of written and spoken languages. He demonstrates that a new kind of sculpture, a humble, popular style which developed from Roman provincial sculpture, appeared and existed side by side with courtly styles which preserved or rediscovered much of the dignity of Late Classical art.

As feudalism declined, this dichotomy between the popular and courtly disappeared. The first literary Romance languages took root and regional Romanesque styles developed, identified with religious architecture and sculptors like Gislebertus, Wiligelmo and Antelami.

In the Gothic age, national idioms developed in the figurative arts as France, England and Germany became unified monarchical states. In Italy a national consciousness, on a cultural level, evolved; with it are associated the sculptors of the Pisano family and the cathedrals they decorated in Pisa and Siena.

As the Renaissance flowered in Italy and southern France, the Late Gothic style continued in the north, especially in Germany, where the work of Riemen-schneider and Veil Stoss is outstanding in this period.

This volume, spanning over 1,000 years from the fifth to the fifteenth century, contains a remarkable selection of illustrations which follow closely the historical development and represent the finest examples of Medieval art.”

The Canals of South and South East England by Charles Hadfield (£28.00)Publisher: Newton Abbot: David & Charles — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a very small nick to the foot of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [2]; Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Charles Hadfield’s The Canals of Southern England, published in 1955, has been out of print for some time. Since it was written, new records have been found and specialised studies made of several waterways within the area covered. It has therefore been replaced by two new volumes, The Canals of South West England already published, and this present book.

The Canals of South and South East England tells the story of all inland waterways south of the Thames and of Gloucester, and east of a line drawn roughly from Bristol to Christchurch. These include major canals like the Thames & Severn, Gloucester & Berkeley and Kennet & Avon, the Thames navigation itself, the many smaller canals and navigable rivers in the London area, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, and interesting schemes that came to nothing.

The old text has been thoroughly revised, and there is also much completely new information, especially on waterways about which separate books have not yet been written: the Stroudwater, Wilts and Berks, Grand Surrey, Croydon, Thames & Medway, Medway, Kentish Stour, and those of Hampshire.”

In Search of the Maquis: Rural Resistance in Southern France, 1942-1944 by H. R. [Harry Roderick] Kedward (£27.00)Publisher: Oxford: Clarendon Press — 2003Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0198205783]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Maps;

From the cover: “In Search of the Maquis is a study of the maquis in southern France, the Resisters who took to the woods and hills in the struggle against the German Occupation in the Second World War. Edward’s detailed and perceptive account explores what participation in the maquis meant for those involved, both at the time and subsequently. He examines the motivations of the maquisards and how the circumstances of occupation and resistance affected the ways of life of rural communities in the south of France.

This is a rich and original book which achieves a fruitful integration of extensive archival research and oral history. Professor Kedward’s scholarly and readable history allows the voices of individuals to be heard, and offers us important insights into the nature of community and regional tradition. From the many fascinating and moving individual stories emerge a sense of place, a clearer understanding of the maquisard, and an unsentimental assessment of the role of the maquis in French history.”

The mysteries and riches of Sheba and its people enticed the likes of Alexander the Great, the Emperor Augustus, and the kings of Ethiopia and Byzantium. From the 8th century to the 1st century BC, the kingdom of Sheba dominated other realms in Southern Arabia, imposing its language, institutions and artistic forms throughout the region.

This book provides a detailed synthesis of this remote civilization, the uniqueness of the region’s geography and climate, and the major events that shaped its history. The Cold Commands by Richard Morgan (£19.00)Publisher: Gollancz — 2011Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 057507793X]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “Kingil Eskiath, scarred wielder of the kiriath-forged broadsword Ravensfriend, is on the run — from his past and the family who have disowned him, from the slave trade magnates of Trelayne who want him dead, and apparently from the dark gods themselves, who are taking an interest but making no more sense than they ever have.

Outlawed and exiled from his ancestral home in the north, Ringil has only one place left to turn — Yhelteth, city heart of the southern Empire, where perhaps he can seek asylum with the kiriath half-breed Archeth Indamaninarmal, former war comrade and now high-up advisor to the Emperor Jhiral Khimran II.

But Archeth has problems of her own, as does her house guest, bodyguard and one time steppe nomad Egar the Dragonbane. And far from gaining the respite he is seeks, Ringil will instead find himself implicated in doubtful allegiances no safer than those he has left behind. Old enemies are stirring, the old order is rotted through and crumbling, and though no-one yet knows it, the city of Yhelteth is about to explode…”

Guide Catalogue Of The Neolithic And Bronze Age Collections In Devizes Museum by F. K. Annable & D. D. A. Simpson (£18.00)Publisher: Wiltshire Archaeological & Natural History Society — 1964Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs & drawings. From the preface: “The present volume, the fourth in the series of printed catalogues published by the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, is intended to replace the prehistoric sections of the former publications (Devizes Museum Catalogues, Part I (1896) and Part II (1911 and 1934)), now out of print, and largely out of date.

Although the essential purpose of this volume is to present a virtually exhaustive corpus of the later prehistoric antiquities preserved in the Society’s museum at Devizes, the inclusion of an introductory chapter describing the Colt Hoare-Cunnington partnership, and summary accounts of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages in southern Britain, are aimed additionally at providing interest for the general reader, in the hope that the catalogue may thereby attract a wider public.

In the lengthy period intervening between the original discovery of the objects illustrated herein, and their final acquisition and transference from Stourhead House to Devizes Museum, there have been, unhappily, many losses, as well as discrepancies which have arisen relating to the precise attribution of some of the finds. In compiling this fourth edition every effort has, therefore, been made to base the descriptions on a close study of the original sources, in particular, the manuscript letters of William Cunnington (1754-1810) to Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758-1838), and The Ancient History of North and South Wiltshire, Vols. I and II, by Colt Hoare, the classic account of their joint researches which is itself written very largely from the excavation ‘reports’ contained in the Cunnington letters.

The compilers of the present catalogue wish to express their lively appreciation of the encouragement and advice they have received throughout its compilation from Professor Stuart Piggott, F. S. A. , F. B. A. , and Professor R. J. C. Atkinson, M. A. , F. S. A. Dr. Isobel Smith, F. S. A. , has also given valuable assistance on a number of problems during the manuscript stages. Gratitude is also expressed to Mr. R. E. Sandell, M. A. , F. S. A. , Hon. Librarian to the Society, for consistent help, and to Mrs. G. P. Mitchell, B. A. , Assistant Curator, for her co-operation during the final stages of the work.

The detail photographs at the end of the book were taken by the Department of Photography, Bath Academy of Art. The Committee of the Society is grateful for their enthusiastic collaboration..”

Operation Freshman:The Rjukan Heavy Water Raid 1942 by Richard Wiggan (£17.00)Publisher: London: William Kimber & Co., Ltd — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 071830571X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “On a winter’s night in late 1942 there foundered in the mountains of Southern Norway one of the most vital — if not the most vital — missions of the Second World War. Thirty-four men in two gliders, towed by Halifax bombers, set out to sabotage the heavy water plant at Vemork and so cripple Germany’s efforts to be the first to produce an atomic bomb. Both gliders and one of the Halifaxes crashed. The crew of the bomber died instantly, as did the pilots and co-pilots of the gliders. But there were survivors from the gliders, members of the British 1st Airborne Division, Royal Engineers.

It was the fate of these Royal Engineers that turned this little-known raid, code-named Operation Freshman, into a tale of horror and murder that remained a mystery until British forces returned to Norway at the end of the war. The men died as a direct result of a top secret order just issued by Hitler and, then unknown to the British, aimed at curbing damaging commando raids.

Richard Wiggan tells how Operation Freshman was conceived and planned in a desperate race against time and of the difficulties to be overcome. His in-depth research into the operation included access to war crimes trial records not yet open to the general public. He presents a detailed account which includes Norwegian involvement in Freshman, both in the operation itself and in aiding the survivors. The book also describes the subsequent successful raid on Vemork by Special Operations Executive Norwegian agents.”

Battle Castles: 500 Years of Knights and Siege Warfare by Dan Snow (£16.00)Publisher: HarperPress — 2012Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780007455584]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a small, closed, nick to the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “Europe, a thousand years ago — the 1 Vikings are on the move; Christendom is militarised and looking eastwards. Amidst this simmering disquiet, a new weapon of war arises, one that will dominate the landscape and politics for hundreds of years to come: the castle.

In this action-packed and fully illustrated account, Dan Snow shows how medieval castles were not just the military ‘bones of a kingdom’, but also the heart and soul of political and cultural life. Battle Castles explores six of the world’s most important castles: Dover Castle, ‘the Key to England’, for centuries the first line of defence against the French; Edward I’s Conwy, his most formidable Welsh fortress; Chateau Gaillard, Richard I’s stronghold in Normandy; Gibralfaro, the last vanguard of Moorish rule in southern Spain; Malbork, headquarters of the Teutonic Knights in Poland; and, in Syria, Krak des Chevaliers, a feat of Crusader engineering. These castles were forged to withstand the fiercest of onslaughts and each bore witness to a pivotal field of conflict.

Battle Castles brings to life the epic sieges that these mighty fortifications endured, plunging the reader deep into the world of the Middle Ages. It explores how and why these castles were built, how daily life felt within them, how they were attacked, defended — and finally sacked. Join Dan Snow on the ramparts and in the tunnels, and experience the battle scenes that transformed empires into dust, and mortals into legends.”

Spillover: Animal Infections and The Next Human Pandemic by David Quammen (£15.50)Publisher: New York & London: W. W. Norton & Company — 2012Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 9780393066807]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author, with dedication, on the half-title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Contains: Maps;

From the cover: “The next big and murderous human pandemic, the one that kills us in millions, will be caused by a new disease — new to humans, anyway. The bug that’s responsible will be strange, unfamiliar, but it won’t come from outer space. Odds are that the killer pathogen — most likely a virus — will spill over into humans from a nonhuman animal.

David Quammen’s Spillover is a “masterpiece of science reporting” (Walter Isaacson) that tracks this subject around the world. For five years, Quammen shadowed scientists into the field — a rooftop in Bangladesh, a forest in the Congo, a Chinese rat farm, a suburban woodland in Dutchess County, New York — and through their high-biosecurity laboratories. He interviewed survivors and gathered stories of the dead. He found surprises in the latest research, alarm among public health officials, and deep concern in the eyes of researchers. Spillover delivers the science, the history, the mystery, and the human anguish as page-turning drama.

From what innocent creature, in what remote landscape, will the Next Big One emerge? A rodent in southern China? A monkey in West Africa? A bat in Malaysia that happens to roost above a pig farm from which hogs are exported to Singapore? In this age of speedy travel between dense human populations, an emerging disease can go global in hours. But where and how will it start? Recent outbreaks offer some guidance, and so Quammen traces the origins of Ebola, Marburg, SARS, avian influenza, Lyme disease, and other bizarre cases of spillover, including the grim, unexpected story of how AIDS began from a single Cameroonian chimpanzee.

Spillover asks urgent questions: Are these events independent misfortunes, or linked? Are they merely happening to us, or are we somehow causing them? What can be done? But Spillovers more than a clarion work of reportage. It’s also the elegantly told tale of a quest, through time and landscape, for a new understanding of how the world works.”

Ram Ram India: Notes from a Ride in the Subcontinent by Alex Thomson & Nick Rossiter (£13.00)Publisher: Collins — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Alex Thomson and Nick Rossiter set off to cycle from Kashmir to the southern tip of India with a lack of preparation that would reassure the most absent-minded city dweller. They made their way through the Himalayan passes with no introductions, no sleeping bags, and very little initiative. They were not even terribly good cyclists.

It was hardly surprising, therefore, that their tangles with Indian bureaucracy often reached Gothic dimensions; that their encounters with Indian wildlife smacked more of Pythonesque hysteria than of the thrill of the safari; and that their meetings with Indians and British ex-patriates had the beauty and surprise that comes to true travellers unexpectedly, out of a clear sky, rather than from the shadow of the Raj.

It is the humour in their journey, and in their account of it, that readers will find so refreshing. They will follow the gradual revelation of a friendship between two ill-matched companions whose tolerance of each other and of their circumstances brings with it, as if by accident, as clear an illumination of India and her people as we have been lucky enough to see in print for some time.”

Ivo Peters' Classic Steam by Mac Hawkins (£12.50)Publisher: Hawk Editions — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0952908158]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Acknowledged as one of the finest railway photographers of his generation, Ivo Peters devoted much of his life to recording the glories of the steam age across the British Isles and Ireland from its heyday to its decline. This single volume brings together some of the very best of his work, much of it previously unpublished. Each picture was carefully selected from the photographer’s extensive library by his son, Julian, and Mac Hawkins.

As an aesthete and perfectionist Ivo Peters was unsurpassed: he took infinite care to compose each subject within a complementary panorama, reflecting the magnificence of the surroundings as well as recording the age of steam. Urban and industrial scenery was not forgotten: throughout the 1950s and early 1960s he travelled extensively visiting many colliery and ironstone lines, photographing both humble and unique steel workhorses wherever they were employed.

Containing some 120 superb examples of Ivo Peters’ craft, this magnificent volume showcases an exclusive collection of nostalgic images of steam traction. Accompanied by explanatory text based on the photographer’s own notes and writing, each picture offers an enticing glimpse of a lost era.

For maximum effect the photographs have been reproduced in duotone, adding an extra depth to the subjects and enhancing their superior quality..”

The Times Compact History of the World by Edited by Geoffrey Parker (£12.50)Publisher: Grafton — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0007650809]Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ. Very slightly ruffled edges of DJ.Description: 3d Edition. Illustrated with colour photographs and maps. From the introduction: “This volume attempts to cover the whole story of humankind from its origins, when our ancestors first emerged from the tropical forests of Africa, to the complex, highly articulated world in which we now live. It differs, however, from the original History of the World in three important ways. First, as its name makes clear, it presents the data in a more compact form. Although it includes 80 spreads each contains fewer, simpler maps and (proportionately) more text. Second, every map has been reviewed in order to highlight the salient trends and facts it features. Third, the topics selected for treatment include far more material from the modern period: 24 spreads concentrate on the period since 1914 and no fewer than 17 of them cover the world since 1945.”Notes: Size: 9¾" x 7¾". Vegetables by Anon. (£12.50)Publisher: Time-Life Books — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0705435121]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Where would the culinary arts be without vegetables? In all shapes, colours, textures and flavours, their variety seems endless and is growing all the time as more and more exotic kinds reach our shops and tallies. And the variety of vegetables is matched by their amazing versatility. This hook contains a selection of recipes from all over the world which have vegetables as their main ingredients. Some contain meat, fish or game, hut many are vegetarian, while others can he prepared leaving out the meat or fish without significant loss to the dish.

There are traditional dishes from individual countries, which have largely come about through local availability of produce and climatic conditions. In southern Italy, for example, vegetables are the mainstay of the diet and unusual specialities have arisen, such as Radicchio Risotto and Cardoon with Tomato Sauce. Other dishes are common to many countries, such as Cauliflower Gratin, which is represented here in a version found in Germany. And there are recipes using techniques from different regions, such as the Far Eastern stir-fry method which is particularly good for vegetables as it retains so much of their flavour and texture.

The recipes range through all kinds of vegetables, from aubergines and avocado to the humble potato and reel cabbage, and they cover the whole range of cuisine, from light snacks to satisfying main courses. All the recipes have one thing in common: the delicious flavour of fresh vegetable produce.”

Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution by James M. [Munro] McPherson (£11.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 019505542X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “James McPherson has emerged as one of America’s finest historians. Battle Cry of Freedom, his Pulitzer Prize-winning account of the Civil War, was a national bestseller that Hugh Brogan, in The New York Times Book Review, called “historical writing of the highest order”. In that volume, McPherson gathered in the broad sweep of events, the political, social, and cultural forces at work during the Civil War era. Now, in Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution, he offers a series of thoughtful and engaging essays on aspects of Lincoln and the war that have rarely been discussed in depth.

McPherson again displays his keen insight and sterling prose as he examines several critical themes in American history. He looks closely at the President’s role as Commander-in-Chief of the Union forces, showing how Lincoln forged a national military strategy for victory. He explores the importance of Lincoln’s great rhetorical skills, uncovering how-through parables and figurative language — he was uniquely able to communicate both the purpose of the war and a new meaning of liberty to the people of the North. In another section, McPherson examines the Civil War as a Second American Revolution, describing how the Republican Congress elected in 1860 passed an astonishing blitz of new laws (rivalling the first hundred days of the New Deal), and how the war not only destroyed the social structure of the old South, but radically altered the balance of power in America, ending 70 years of Southern power in the national government.

The Civil War was the single most transforming and defining experience in American history, and Abraham Lincoln remains the most important figure in the pantheon of our mythology. These graceful essays, written by one of America’s leading historians, offer fresh and unusual perspectives on both.”

Cornwall's Central Mines: The Southern District, 1810-1895 by T. A. [Thomas Alexander] Morrison (£11.50)Publisher: Penzance: Alison Hodge — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0906720117]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Light creasing to the laminate of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Graphs; Maps; Tables; References;

From the cover: “The years 1810-95 saw unprecedented expansion and then rapid decline in the Cornish copper and tin mining industries. Four decades of vigorous growth and technical innovation followed the Napoleonic Wars, and during the 1850s and early 1860s the mines enjoyed their heyday. Until the disastrous fall in metal prices later in the century, Cornwall led the world in the art and science of mining for metals.

Cornwall’s central mining district, concentrated around Camborne and Redruth, was the core of the industry. The story of the hundred or so different mines is of such intricate complexity, and the mass of information available so vast that the tale has never before been told. Cornwall’s Central Mines is the result of years of meticulous research. The first volume, subtitled The Northern District and published in 1980, covered such legendary mines as Cook’s Kitchen, East Pool, Carn Brea, Tincroft and South Crofty, as well as a host of others less well known. This book concentrates on the southern half of the central mining district which contained some of the richest mines in Cornwall, including Wheal Buller, Wheal Basset, West Basset, South Frances, South Condurrow, Wheal Grenville and the famous Tresavean. Here too is the story of Dolcoath.

The two volumes combine to give unprecedented historical coverage of the great Camborne-Redruth mining district.”

Deeper Than Debt: Economic Globalization and the Poor by George Ann Potter (£11.50)Publisher: Latin America Bureau — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781899365463]Condition: Very Good. Lightly rubbed at the tips of the wraps otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: First in this edition. From the cover: “Debt is a good thing — for creditors. In the current global economy, the debt owed by the poorest countries allows the richest to have enormous influence over most Southern economies. Such control is enforced via the International Monetary Fund, which requires poor countries to export raw materials at low prices, cut back on social spending on areas such as health and education, and to privatise national wealth – all to generate dollars to pay rich creditors. Debt means four fifths of the world’s population cannot develop, while inequality between the rich and poor grows. Deeper than Debt brings together a wide range of arguments and views to examine the effects of economic globalisation on the lives of the poor majority in debtor countries, and how debt can illuminate the process of the ever-deepening inequality between rich and poor.”.Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). 162 pages. Europe Incorporated: The New Challenge by Gianni Montezemolo (£11.50)Publisher: Chichester, New York, Weinheim, Brisbane, Singapore & Toronto: John Wiley & Sons, Ltd — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0471623881]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a light stain to the reverse at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Charts; Graphs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “With the breakdown of the East-West divide, the faltering of the Asian Economies and the rapid economic integration of the European Union, Europe is once more a force to be reckoned with. For the first time in more than three decades, multinationals — and in particular American multinationals -will be looking towards Europe.

Globalization has been at the forefront of most CEOs’ agendas in recent times but Gianni Montezemolo contends that they should now look first in Europe for business opportunities and threats in the short-term, rather than in the volatile economies of South America, Asia and the Middle East.

Moving away from traditional structures the author outlines a new organizational design, which divides Europe into four distinct clusters — the Northern Bees, the Atlantic Storks, the Southern Gazelles and the Eastern Bears. Using this framework, senior management will be able to develop a clear vision of how to change, expand and integrate into the new Europe.

Drawing on interviews with CEOs of major companies currently operating in Europe, including Benetton, Danone, Gillette, Heinz, Kodak, Procter & Gamble, Sara Lee and Sony, as well as his own considerable practical experience, Gianni Montezemolo provides clear and concise guidelines for all managers wishing to take advantage of the new and expanding Europe. For companies ready to adapt rapidly, the opportunities are endless.”
