Britain & The Sea by VARIOUS (£32.00)Publisher: St. James's House — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ. Very slightly ruffled edges of DJ.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Britain has a proud maritime heritage encompassing the impressive history of the Royal Navy, as well as the contribution made by civilian seafarers over the years. Yet rather than dwelling on the past, the focus of this book goes beyond the current horizon and embraces the advances that have been made in all spheres of contemporary life. Accordingly, we identified a breathtakingly diverse host of organizations and institutions, many of them international, which, through excellence in their particular spheres, continue to contribute to one common aim. That aim is to ensure that Britain remains a prosperous, outward-looking force for good in the world community, as well as a tolerant and benevolent nation which some 60 million of us are privileged to call home.”Notes: Size: 11¾" x 8½". The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships by C. [Charles] Nepean Longridge (£20.50)Publisher: Hemel Hempstead: Model & Allied Publications Limited — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0853440913]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 6th impression. [First Edition: 1955] Illustrated by way of: Fold-out Plans [12]; Black & White Plates [50]; Black & White Drawings [183];

From the cover: “Nelson’s history has been written from every possible angle, but this is not so with his ships. Such information as there is about the ships is buried in contemporary books on Naval Architecture; only the expert can sift it and present it in a usable form. In doing this, Dr. Longridge’s work becomes a veritable treasure trove for the naval historian and ship modeller. H. M. S. Victory is the supreme example of the ships of the period, and fortunately she is still in existence. The original draughts of 1765 have been preserved, as have also the drawings used in the restoration of the ship in 1922. The author was thus able to compile from authentic sources and his model of the Victory now occupies a prominent position in the Science Museum at South Kensington.

The illustrations are a unique feature, they include a set of photographs, now made available to the general public, showing the interior construction of H. M. S. Victory and H. M. S. Implacable, the latter being taken only a few days before she was scuttled.

There are nearly 200 line drawings, designed by E. Bowness, A. R. I. N. A. , and executed by G. F. Campbell, Assoc. M. R. I. N. A. , ranging from elaborate perspective drawings of the complex gear at the fore top and crosstrees to the simplest detail. The folding plates by G. F. Campbell include lines, inboard and outboard profile, deck plans of the hull, standing and running rigging plans, and a complete belaying pin plan.

Such an analysis of the ship of this period has never before been attempted and the ship lover, the naval architect and the ship modeller of today is fortunate in having such a work.”

A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which has a little tanning overall. Leans slightly. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. From the cover: “In late 1942, when Allied fortunes stood at their lowest, German U-boats began to decimate shipping in the Indian Ocean. In one month alone they sank 46 ships, a total of 250,000 tons.

These U-boats were guided to their targets by a secret transmitter aboard a German ship which had sought shelter in the neutral harbour in the Portuguese colony of Goa, 400 miles south of Bombay. No action involving regular British forces could be taken against this ship for fear of infringing Portuguese neutrality — yet it was imperative to silence this transmitter. The result seemed stalemate — until someone remembered that in Calcutta, 1,400 miles away, some civilian merchants, bankers, solicitors and accountants belonged to a part-time territorial unit, The Calcutta Light Horse. They had joined because they liked riding and racing. Military activities were limited to an evening parade once a week — and often drinks at the bar constituted this parade. These civilians were asked to volunteer for a task no-one else could undertake — at their own risk and expense. If they failed, then the whole episode could be written off as a regrettable drunken prank that misfired.

The date for this strange and desperate assault was March 9th 1943. What happened when 18 middle-aged civilians formed their own boarding party — and the astonishing results — makes this one of the strangest, funniest and most exciting stories of war in the East, “

The trail leads him across France then by ship to Canada and down through America to Miami, where he gathers weapons and ordinance before departing for Panama City to join with Miguel Lopez and his wife Marguerite. This formidable couple owns a shipping and airline business and like Ben, they also seek revenge and are willing to help him recruit and train a small ex Special Forces group in the task of destroying the dru factory, while Ben plots the death of the Cartel leaders.

A ‘bloody’ air and ground action takes place in the rough mountains and steamy jungles of Colombia where the illegal factory is based.

Teamwork coupled with experience and special training prevails against ever mounting odds from both man and Mother Nature.”

From the introduction: “The Epic of Malta was published in London by Odhams Press during the Second World War ‘as a small token of admiration and gratitude’. The entire proceeds of its sale, which must have been speedy and steady, were devoted to the Malta Relief Fund — a contribution to the general war effort. The book does not bear a date, but the content clearly indicates that it was published shortly after the George Cross — awarded to Malta in April 1942 — had been formally presented in an official public ceremony in September of that year. A copy of the book at the University of Malta Library, obtained originally from the Malta Garrison Officers' Library, is stamped by the colony's Information Office and bears the date 28 May 1943.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Professor Henry Frendo. From the cover: “It is only since about 1900 that the British shipping industry has had to meet severe and increasing international competition; and between 1900 and 1960 British-registered tonnage has declined from over 45 per cent to under 16 per cent of the world total. In this important study Dr Sturmey traces the history of the industry in its international context, examines the various explanations that might be advanced for its relative decline, and considers its prospects for the future.

He suggests that no fully adequate cause can be found in any of the factors external to the British industry such as changes in the underlying competitive situation, interferences with the competitive process, wars, trade changes, or the repercussions of government policies not directly concerned with shipping; and that the position in which the industry now finds itself is essentially attributable to the operation of certain internal constraints on growth, which must be removed if the industry is to recover its buoyancy.”

A Golden Adventure: The First 50 Years of Ultramar by Paul Atterbury; Julia MacKenzie; (£12.50)Publisher: Hurtwood Press — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Boards slightly faded at the top edges. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Maps to the endpapers. Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “Ultramar was formed in London in 1935 and 1985 is its golden anniversary. This book is the story of the Company — its Golden Adventure. From a small exploration company in Venezuela, it has grown into an integrated oil company operating on five continents.

Oil had been discovered by Ultramar in the hitherto unexplored llanos of central Venezuela just prior to the Second World War, but the outbreak of hostilities in 1939 cut off the availability of funds, equipment and expertise from Europe. Exploration and development came to a halt and the future looked bleak, but Ultramar, always resourceful, found an American partner and went on to develop the Mercedes field.

In the late 1950s, when all the teething problems had finally been resolved and the debts repaid, crude oil prices in the world plunged and Ultramar had to face the reality that there was more to the oil business than finding and producing oil and gas. A critical decision had to be made and typically Ultramar took a bold step. It decided to build and acquire refining, marketing and shipping facilities and become a fully integrated oil company. By the mid 1960s, this had become reality and it is the basic pattern which remains today.

Ultramar quite early foresaw the eventual nationalisation of Venezuelan oil and the consequent loss of its prime source of income. Through the 1960s and early 1970s, the Company gradually expanded its exploration and production activities into Canada, the U. K. , the U. S. and Indonesia. When the Venezuelan income was lost in 1975, Ultramar was able to take it in its stride. In fact, in the last two decades, Ultramar’s profits have risen steadily, and in 1984 attained a pre-tax profit of £285 million and an after-tax profit of £127 million.

The story of Ultramar is largely that of the men and women whose initiative, ambition and determination have made the Company a success..”

The Call of the Sea: Britain's Maritime Past 1900-1960 by Steve Humphries (£11.50)Publisher: British Broadcasting Corporation [B.B.C./BBC] — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780563387220]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “ The Call of the Sea, and the television series which it accompanies, is a unique record of Britain’s maritime past told through the memories of ordinary people in whose lives the sea played a central role.

As an island, Britain has always retained strong links with the sea. The Call of the Sea evokes many of the greatest of Britain’s maritime traditions, such as the history of our Naval power, the fishing industry and the sea-rescue services.

Before the Second World War Britain was the greatest seafaring nation in the world. However, a life at sea was one of the most dangerous and uncomfortable that anyone could choose. On some occasions the appalling conditions drove crews to mutiny. Dramatic stories of shipwreck, survival and rescue are all part of maritime history. The Call of the Sea includes many incredible tales of adventure and heroism, some of the most amazing of which involve women mariners who defied convention to brave the dangers of a life at sea.

The Call of the Sea is a fascinating history of our maritime heritage, bringing the past to life and painting a vivid picture of what it was really like to live and work at sea..”

And how did our industry become so uncompetitive in the first place? Here are the facts and the statistics behind the collapse of British industrial power and influence between the end of the Second World War and the late 1970s, and the subsequent return to apparent health in the Thatcherite years. Views vary widely on the causes of the decline; yet there is a remarkable degree of agreement as to what needs to be done to continue the recovery. Mercantile Law by Stevens (£10.50)Publisher: The School Of Accountancy, Secretaryship, Banking, and Insurance — 1925Binding: Hardback Condition: Good+. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank.Description: From the introduction: “This edition has been brought up to date in the usual-way. Among the important recent decisions referred to are Joachimson v. Swiss Bank Corporation, and Tournier v. National Provincial Bank, which both bear upon the relation between banker and customer. It has also been thought desirable to deal more fully with other subjects, such as covenants in restraint of trade, the position of the collecting banker, and arbitrations. Not many statutory changes in the law called for special notice, but the main provisions of the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1924, which are likely to affect commercial transactions to a considerable extent, have been summarised.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Herbert Jacobs.
