The Imperial Russian Navy by Anthony J. Watts (£154.00)Publisher: London: Arms & Armour Press — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0853689121]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is a little faded at the spine and onto the margins of the panels. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Occupying a most important place in naval history, the fleets of the Imperial Russian Navy represent a major subject for study by serving officers, senior historians and naval buffs. Few published accounts have done justice to the topic, and none has offered the range of photographic illustration presented in this volume. The three centuries of naval development covered here demonstrate that its constant need to control its own ports and precious narrow exits to the oceans, as well as its pursuit of access to the Mediterranean, has caused the Russian Navy to be regularly in combat and at the forefront of advances in design, armament and strategy. Throughout the battles with its neighbours, the Crimean, Russo-Japanese conflicts, and the First World War, the Imperial Russian Navy deployed novel ships and weapons, including early use of torpedoes and of the submarine.

Anthony Watts has brought together an unprecedented collection of photographs and data to provide this new study of a most significant element of military history. Through his summary of Russian naval evolution, his compendium of technical information and the pictorial coverage, he has provided a most important contribution to naval literature, perhaps the most valuable volume on the subject for eighty years.”

The Fleet in the First World War Volume 1: Operations of the Russian Fleet by Edited by N. B. Pavlovich (£86.00)Publisher: New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta & New York: Amerind Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd. — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is a little dulled at the panels and faded at the spine. Boards and spine dulled. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Publishing date unstated, dated from references. Translation of Flot v Pervoi Mirovoi Voine published by Voennoe Izdatel’stvo, Ministry of Defence, USSR, Moscow, 1964. Illustrated by way of: Maps; Tables; Fold-Out Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “Among the many works on the First World War there has been no comprehensive account of the Russian navy’s part in that epic clash of the great powers. This gap is now filled by the present volume, which takes its place as the authoritative record of the Russian fleet’s day-by-day contribution to the war at sea from 1914 through 1917, when the revolutionary Bolshevik government took Russia out of what it saw as a purely imperialistic confrontation.

The story of the tortuously slow growth of the tsarist navy is told against the background of war preparations by Germany, France and England. We learn that through the vision and persistence of a few leaders Russia’s posture both on land, at sea and in the air at the outbreak of the war could inspire a measure of confidence.

The deeds of the Russian navy are recounted on the basis of the three theatres where it operated: the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the White Sea and adjoining coastal waters. The sections under these three heads give a year-by-year account of the fighting at sea against the background of the general progress of hostilities, particularly on the land front. The account concludes with the overthrow of the Tsar, the brief transition of Bolshevik rule, and the upheaval these developments produced in the Russian navy, which played a not inconsiderable part in hastening the process.”

The Osprey Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft by Bill Gunston (£77.00)Publisher: London: Osprey Aerospace — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1855324059]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper has been misfolded by the publisher at the head of the lower panel and is very slightly creased at the foot of the spine which has a small ding mid-way. Description: First in this edition. [First: 1983 as Aircraft of the Soviet Union] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “This huge work constitutes Bill Gunston’s 330th book. Commenting on its content, the author states It has taken more blood, sweat and tears than any 20 ordinary books. For one thing, at least half of what we thought we knew about Russian aircraft has turned out to be wrong.

At last, this exhaustive compilation can be put before the public with confidence that it documents the true histories of some 1000 types of aircraft. At last, the ‘red herrings’ and spurious details invented (mostly in the two decades between 1950 and 1970 by people in the West) have been swept away and replaced by the facts. It can confidently be claimed that no book in the history of aviation has ever contained anything like as much new information.

The author thought his task would be greatly eased by the fact that in 1983 he had written the then definitive work on the subject, entitled Aircraft of the Soviet Union. This was the bible on the subject for many years, but when it came to compiling this new work, Gunston had to check over every word because so much of what was thought to be fact has turned out to be wrong in varying degrees. Moreover, as there is no longer a Soviet Union the title of the completed work had to change.

This in turn meant that the starting point had to go back from 1918 to 1875!

The main text is prefaced by sections on aircraft designations, engines, air-launched weapons, avionics and many other topics including Western reporting names. At the end of the book is a section on Ekranoplans, which the West often call by the clumsy title wing-in-ground-effect vehicles . Some of these are veritable flying ships, with awesome size and performance, and many are products of aircraft design teams. This section itself could have formed a complete book, and much of the information included here has not previously been published.

It needed the proverbial shoehorn to get it all in between one pair of covers, as the amount of information provided is astronomic. Pick any type and compare its treatment with what you get in any other source — even one dealing with just a specific design team. This volume really is the ultimate work on Russian aircraft.”

From the cover: “Among the most popular stamps in the world are those of Sweden and Finland.

The earlier issues from these countries are also some of the most challenging in philately.

This new book provides a truly detailed guide to these fascinating stamps and, as such, has long been sought by collectors. With its companion volume, Stamps of Denmark, Iceland, and Norway, an overall picture of the whole of Greater Scandinavia is possible.

The author is a well-known contributor in serious and light-hearted vein to many journals. Now in his two books he throws lighten many of the philatelic problems which he has grappled with and sometimes had to solve for himself. Much original study is documented in their pages, together with exhaustive information on printings, shades, varieties, and forgeries.

As a guide both to forming and writing-up a collection of the earlier stamps of Scandinavia the companion books are indispensable reading and reference for philatelists, both amateur and professional. Numerous illustrations enhance works which will find a valued place in all philatelic libraries.”

The White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov (£64.00)Publisher: London: Collins & Harvill Press — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002619059]Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, without loss although untidy and now tape-reinforced on the verso, with sunning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise bar for small tear at the foot of the last two leaves. Description: From the cover: “The time — 1918. The place — Kiev, capital of the Ukraine, torn by revolution and civil war. The people — the Turbin family of two brothers and a sister, whose home is a calm pool of affection, warmth and humanity in a maelstrom of cold, snow, violence and sudden death. Alexei Turbin, eldest brother and head of the family, is a doctor returned from the war; his sister Elena is married to an unpleasant Baltic German who scuttles away like a rat as soon as danger threatens. The youngest is Nikolka, at seventeen just out of officer-cadet school and a volunteer in one of the scratch units manned by officers which formed the White Guard in the Ukraine. A cuckoo in their nest is their hopeless cousin from Zhitomir, Lariosik, a charming bungler who always says the wrong thing, breaks everything he touches, yet is welcomed into the Turbins’ charmed circle with love and kindness.

At the beginning, the Germans are still occupying Kiev, propping up the feeble regime of the Hetman Skoropadsky. Their cause lost in advance by the Hetman’s ignoble defection, Alexei and Nikolka Turbin and their White Guard officer friends make a brave but futile attempt to resist the capture of Kiev by the adventurer Petlyura and his army of long-moustached, baggy-trousered, trigger-happy Ukrainian roughnecks.

Savage while it lasts, Petlyura’s occupation of Kiev is at least short and as his motley troops slink away, Bulgakov coins an image of power which is the perfect antithesis to the cosy, womb-like interior of the Turbin’s home: on the track outside Kiev, hissing gently, waiting to grind inexorably into the city, stands the huge steel-clad articulated juggernaut of a Bolshevik armoured train.”

H.M.S. Electra as Told to A. V. Sellwood by T. J. Cain (£43.00)Publisher: London: Frederick Muller Limited — 1960Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with damp wrinkling to both panels and a short, closed, tear to the head of the upper panel. Price Clipped. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Leans slightly. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: 2nd impression. [First Edition: 1959] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “The only time that H. M. S. Electra got a wartime “mention” in the national press was when three-quarters of her crew were no longer able to read it. They were dead.

For it was the disastrous yet little-known Battle of the Java Sea — where a British, Australian, American and Dutch force was annihilated by the Japanese — that put Electron’s name in print.

‘H. M. S. Electra attacked through the smoke and was seen no more…’

The epitaph was terse, though moving. It left much unsaid. And today, in H. M. S. Electra, Lieutenant-Commander T. J. Cain — who fired her torpedoes during her last desperate battle — does much to do justice, long belated, to both the ship and the company who served her.

The result is sensational. For Cain’s story, prepared with the aid of author and naval correspondent A. V. Sellwood, reveals that the “unknown” Electra was the un-publicised companion-in-battle of some of the best-known names in the Royal Navy, and was the witness of events that shook the world. The sinking of the Athenia, the Ark Royal’s attacks on the Nazis in Norway, the first Russian convoy, the defence of Singapore — wherever there was trouble Electra was sure to be found.

SHE was the unnamed destroyer that sailed with Hood to find the Bismarck, and picked up the former’s three survivors…

SHE was at the sinking of the Repulse and Prince of Wales, and snatched part of their crews to safety beneath the mammoth Jap air attack…

And SHE was destroyed during a lone torpedo onslaught against an entire Japanese fleet, to cover the disabled Exeter, famous veteran of the River Plate.

H. M. S. Electra is not “just a war-story” — it is also a history. But it is a very human history — history as seen by a man who helped to make it.

Lieut. -Commander Cain, who, after a fantastic escape in a U. S. submarine, was later captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of the Japanese, is pungent in his comments regarding the blunders of the time. But equally he is an enthusiast — for Electra, her officers, and the men who made her what he calls: A happy ship — the finest I have ever known.”

Vodka on Ice: A Year with the Russians in Antarctica by Charles Swithinbank (£38.00)Publisher: The Book Guild — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “No stranger to the Antarctic, Charles Swithinbank is the only Briton to have served with the Soviet Antarctic Expedition. From 1963 to 1965 he lived and worked without a break at Russian stations in the far south. The Cold War was in full swing and many of his colleagues assumed that he had been sent to spy on them. Yet gradually the barriers were broken down and he encountered many a colourful character, gaining a fascinating insight into the lives of his Soviet comrades. Several had harrowing tales to tell. One had been a dive-bomber pilot during the war. Another had steel ribs as a legacy of the battle of Stalingrad, and had lost part of a leg during the siege of Leningrad. The doctor had been severely wounded in Stalingrad before recovering to hound the German army westwards through the Baltic states. Some of the younger Russians had spent the war in Siberia, working on state farms. In the course of his stay the author visited the coldest place on Earth, drove a giant tractor, taught English, attended Communist Party meetings and did his share of the chores. He describes feasts and everyday fare, borsch and shchi and fish buns.”

Soviet Risk-taking and Crisis Behavior: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis by Hannes Adomeit (£34.00)Publisher: London, Boston & Sydney: George Allen & Unwin — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0043350437]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper nicked at the top corner of the upper panel otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: From the cover: “Under what conditions is the Soviet leadership prepared to take risks in the conduct of its international affairs? Does Soviet behaviour in crises conform to the commonly accepted ‘rules’ or ‘conventions’ of crisis management? How important are threats, ultimatums and military pressure for the achievement of Soviet objectives? These are questions which have often been asked in the West by political leaders and academic specialists, but they have never been systematically analyzed. In this book Hannes Adomeit provides such an analysis.

Detailed examination of the two Berlin crises forms the empirical background against which comparisons are made with the role of the Soviets in other crises-in Cuba, the Middle East, in Vietnam and in Afghanistan -as well as with patterns of Soviet intervention in Eastern Europe. Dr Adomeit shows that successive Soviet leaderships, whether headed by Stalin, Khrushchev or Brezhnev, have acted as though guided by a set of firm ‘operational principles’. These principles and patterns of Soviet crisis behaviour are explained by the interplay of four factors: an ideology requiring constant political initiative; a wide interpretation of security interests; diverse and growing military power; and the centralizing features of the Soviet system. Together they add up to certain advantages over Western pluralist systems; in particular, they can result in successful strategic deception and surprise.

Soviet Risk-taking and Crisis Behaviour will help the general reader to understand the nature of the Soviet challenge in the years ahead and the practitioner of politics to chart the difficult but necessary course between dangerous complacency and equally dangerous over-reaction to Soviet initiatives. Above all, it will be indispensable for students and specialists in international and comparative politics, since it relates theoretical notions of risk and crisis to actual Soviet foreign policy-combining strategic analysis with bureaucratic models of decision-making.”

Adventure Into The Unconscious by John Custance (£33.00)Publisher: Christopher Johnson — 1954Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with tanning to the reverse. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Tanning to the blanks. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “John distance’s first book, Wisdom, Madness and Folly, which was written within the confines of a mental hospital during an attack of manic-depressive insanity, had a considerable success throughout the English-speaking world.

In Adventure into the Unconscious he amplifies his personal story. By a tour de force of effort he ‘comes to terms’ with his mental illness and relates it to the struggles of everyday life. He allows the inspiration, which is the outcome of his exalted state of mind, to guide him in the affairs of Wichbury, the family estate converted into a farming project. He recounts an extraordinary episode resulting from his decision to spend one of his manic phases in the Russian sector of Berlin. As he says: “On the Continent, all English people are regarded as mad, anyway”.

“A travel tale that will rank with the best” was the verdict of a prominent critic on the author’s descriptions in his previous book of his flights of imagination and insight that came to him as a result of his exalted mental state. Indeed, in following John Custance, one finds oneself journeying into the celestial realms unencumbered by the paraphernalia of space suits.

The account of his interview with the famous psychologist, Professor Jung, at his home in Zurich, is of particular interest.”

From the cover: “Luftwaffe pilots of the Russian Front were the highest scoring aces of any aerial conflict in history. This book traces the careers of the pilots who flew the Fw 190 and the Bf 109 in the skies over Russia, and reveals how they achieved their remarkable successes. The Bf 109 was the most commonly used fighter on the Front, and saw action from Operation Barbarossa through to the Defence of the Reich in 1945. The Fw 190, meanwhile, proved itself to be arguably Germany’s best piston-engined fighter, with many of its aces scoring over 100 kills.”

In Me My Enemy by Audrey Erskine Lindop (£28.00)Publisher: White Lion — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0856177946]Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with light frays to the spine ends and corners. Leans and has a slight shelf cock. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First in this edition, [First: Harrap, 1948] and uncommon as such. From the cover: “Loneliness and despair drive Clare Vetch to fix upon her suicide. But is that decision freely made, and is it hers alone? Long-dead generations have an unseen influence upon her. The blood of unknown ancestors flows within her veins. The turbulent history of her forebears has a direct bearing on what she can, or cannot, decide to do. Juliet Vetch, Hamilton Durrey, the amiable soldier George Vetch, Yvetsa, the Russian Princess who was Clare’s mother, and Robert, Yvetsa’s husband — the passions, rages, loves and sorrows of all of these are part of Clare’s unhappy heritage. Can she overcome it? Is she free to want to?

Audrey Erskine Lindop poses an intriguing question at the beginning of this book — what will happen to Clare? What does happen is not for telling here. It is sufficient to say that what does happen rounds off a most absorbing story.”

The Illustrated Encyclopedia Of Commercial Aircraft by Editor-in-Chief Bill Gunston (£27.00)Publisher: Windward — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0711200602]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper and a small scuff to the upper panel. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Colour Drawings; Diagrams; Tables;

From the cover: “This book is a comprehensive account of all the major commercial aircraft, from the first jets like the Nene Viking and Jet Lancastrian, to possible futuristic designs like slew-winged airliners and hydrogen-fuelled aircraft. Also included are the wide-bodied giants of today, the Boeing 747 and the 11-86, together with supersonic types such as the Anglo-French Concorde and the Russian Tu-144. The latter was the first supersonic airliner to fly and enter service, even though its full-scale development began after that of Concorde.

Civil helicopters play a vital role in urban communications and link remote and difficult sites like oil rigs and timber camps. The wide range of general aviation aircraft complement these helicopters, since both are used for tasks like search and rescue, crop-spraying, air-ambulances, fire-fighting, aerial photography and as executive transports.

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Commercial Aircraft contains lists of specifications, three-views, cutaways and colour illustrations, as well as the historical and mechanical details of the aircraft which are changing the face of the world.”

The Art of Flowers by Laurence Buffet-Challié (£24.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pleasant overall but has two short closed tears to the top edge, one at the head of the spine and the other at the head of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Box a little faded and marked but more than acceptable.Description: 41 colour plates. 87 black and white illustrations. 78 explanatory diagrams. From the cover: “The flower as a decorative object is an integral part of the home and in recent times has become an important element in the art of interior design. Here, for the first time, the national styles of Germany, England, France, Italy and Scandinavia have been compared, each influenced by the particular climate, way of life, and artistic history of their country. The book begins with the study of basic forms and techniques; later the amateur is taught how to exploit the natural beauty of flowers, how to see colours and arrange a design which will blend in with its setting. The flower arrangements are shown simply and clearly; explanatory diagrams of their construction appear next to the magnificent colour plates or black and white illustrations, most of which have been especially photographed for this book. The author, a specialist in the art of decoration, writes in collaboration with Jacques Bedat, an eminent florist, who created many of the flower arrangements reproduced, and whose creative fantasy is shown in his arrangements for the Rothschilds, the Duchess of Windsor, Renault, Citroen and many others. The Art of Flowers is dedicated to the flower-lover, whether the source of his pleasure is growing, arranging or just looking at flowers.”Notes: Illustrated by Jacques Bedat. Size: 9¾" x 10¼". From the cover: “Authoritative, comprehensive and beautiful to look at, this unique encyclopaedia is the key to successful gardening. To create a garden which is both flourishing and inviting, you need technical know-how and a touch of inspiration. Larousse Gardening and Gardens provides both. The first chapter, ‘The History of the Garden’, provides an excellent starting point for the inspirational side of gardening — Islamic courtyards, medieval topiary hedges and Japanese bonsai trees all have their place in modern garden design. Chapter 2 discusses different types of garden including rockeries, water gardens and lawns. Pooling the expertise of a team of renowned horticulturalists, Larousse Gardening and Gardens also offers sound technical instruction. In Chapter 3 practical information is clearly expressed and helpfully illustrated with step-by-step drawings. This important chapter ranges in scope from a subject as broad as propagation to the specifics of clematis pruning and is a valuable action pack for the amateur gardener. An extensive A-Z of garden plants complements the previous chapter by providing detailed identification and cultivation information for individual plants. Each plant has a climatic zone rating ensuring successful plant propagation for gardeners throughout the world. Finally, biographical studies of early botanists and plant-hunters recall the very first steps in garden making and provide a fascinating concluding chapter. Complete with maps and tables for quick reference, attractive botanical drawings and spectacular colour photography, Larousse Gardening and Gardens is not only an all-round reference work but also essential reading for gardeners throughout the world.”Notes: Size: 10½" x 7¾".
