Honest George Monck by J. D. [John David] Griffith Davies (£153.00)Publisher: John Lane The Bodley Head — 1936Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with many short nicks and chips. Leans slightly. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “A SIMPLE soldier of fortune, Monck became one of the foremost captains of his age. Yet there was nothing of the sabre-rattling militarist about him. His pacification of the Highlands of Scotland, achieved with surprisingly little bloodshed, marked him down as a first-rate administrator. As a sailor, too, he was Blake’s equal; and to him even more than to Blake belongs the credit of having removed the Dutch naval menace. But surpassing these, the crowning glory of Monck’s work for England was the Stuart Restoration in 1660.

However, there is more in this book than a record of Monck’s political and military work. There is a clearly-cut picture of the man himself — the soldier who never asked his men to do that which he was afraid to do himself; the sailor who strove to better conditions on the lower deck; the indulgent husband and father; the faithful friend; and always the true patriot. All these aspects of Monck’s life are delightfully brought out by Mr. Davies. And perhaps for the first time he enables both students of history and general readers to understand and appreciate one of England’s greatest sons.”

The White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov (£64.00)Publisher: London: Collins & Harvill Press — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002619059]Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, without loss although untidy and now tape-reinforced on the verso, with sunning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise bar for small tear at the foot of the last two leaves. Description: From the cover: “The time — 1918. The place — Kiev, capital of the Ukraine, torn by revolution and civil war. The people — the Turbin family of two brothers and a sister, whose home is a calm pool of affection, warmth and humanity in a maelstrom of cold, snow, violence and sudden death. Alexei Turbin, eldest brother and head of the family, is a doctor returned from the war; his sister Elena is married to an unpleasant Baltic German who scuttles away like a rat as soon as danger threatens. The youngest is Nikolka, at seventeen just out of officer-cadet school and a volunteer in one of the scratch units manned by officers which formed the White Guard in the Ukraine. A cuckoo in their nest is their hopeless cousin from Zhitomir, Lariosik, a charming bungler who always says the wrong thing, breaks everything he touches, yet is welcomed into the Turbins’ charmed circle with love and kindness.

At the beginning, the Germans are still occupying Kiev, propping up the feeble regime of the Hetman Skoropadsky. Their cause lost in advance by the Hetman’s ignoble defection, Alexei and Nikolka Turbin and their White Guard officer friends make a brave but futile attempt to resist the capture of Kiev by the adventurer Petlyura and his army of long-moustached, baggy-trousered, trigger-happy Ukrainian roughnecks.

Savage while it lasts, Petlyura’s occupation of Kiev is at least short and as his motley troops slink away, Bulgakov coins an image of power which is the perfect antithesis to the cosy, womb-like interior of the Turbin’s home: on the track outside Kiev, hissing gently, waiting to grind inexorably into the city, stands the huge steel-clad articulated juggernaut of a Bolshevik armoured train.”

The Unfinished Revolution by Philip Gould (£58.50)Publisher: Little, Brown & Co. — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0316644781]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper. Edges of text block lightly soiled. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “It took Labour fourteen years, three elections and three party leaders before they did it. The party's triumph on 1 May 1997 was not only a total repudiation of the Tories but also the apotheosis of a revolution within Labour — and a complete vindication of those who had brought it about. Provocative, unguarded and illuminating, and including the first inside account of Labour’s 1997 election victory as well as the author’s insights into the ‘black arts’ of modern political campaigning, The Unfinished Revolution is essential reading for anyone interested in Blair’s Labour Party, and its — and Britain’s — future.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). Before the Ironclad: Ship Design, Propulsion and Armament in the Royal Navy, 1815-60 by Edited by David K. [Keith] Brown (£50.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0851775322]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper sunned at the spine. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [14]; Black & White Photographs; Graphs; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “In the massive revolution that affected warship design between Waterloo and Warrior, the Royal Navy is often depicted as fiercely resisting every change until it was almost too late, but this new history of the transition from sail to steam challenges these old assumptions.

Beginning with the structural improvements of Robert Seppings, the book traces the gradual introduction of more scientific methods and the advent of steam and the paddle fighting ship, iron hulls and screw propulsion. It analyses the performance of the fleet in the Crimean War, and concludes with the design of Warrior, the first iron-built, sea-going capital ship in the world.

In passing, the author reveals an organisation that was well aware of new technology, carefully evaluating its potential use, and occasionally (as with its enthusiastic espousal of iron hulls) moving too quickly for its own good. Based on much new research, and a lifetime’s understanding of the technical problems, Before the Ironclad is a well-balanced and coherent account of general developments, as well as an in-depth study of the ships themselves.”

Wisdom Of The Wild: How We Treat Our Planet by Anon. (£26.50)Publisher: Word Wide Fund for Nature — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Presentation plate to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “There is no turning back. There never has been in history. Two hundred million American citizens are not going to leave the USA just to give back to the Indians the land that was stolen from them. The Inuit in Greenland are not about to climb into their kayaks to paddle back up the river of history. The wisdom with which “wild” peoples have animated their world cannot be fetched back at will. Nevertheless, there is a great deal to learn. This, for example: how, on the threshold of the third millennium, can we live once again in a finite world without consuming it? Pedagogues tell us that children need elements of the wild and disorder in order to become mentally sound adults. The child in its den is said to be subconsciously remembering the feeling of safety which our ancestors experienced in caves in the childhood of mankind. In Sweden, they let children fly back to the beginnings of humanity on the wings of their imagination, as it were. The wild as a tonic.

Henry David Thoreau’s suggestion that every major city should have some wildness in its vicinity (because otherwise its inhabitants would revert to the wild) is almost one hundred and fifty years old — and highly topical in view of the frustration which people feel in our concrete bunkers.

An end must be put to the dominance of the right angle. Protection programmes for spacious areas of wilderness have one purpose, among others, namely to preserve the charm of untouched nature. Real-life magic! Magic, or rather cheap tricks — that is what our oh-so-en-lightened world thought of the healing knowledge of the jungle Indians for such a long time. Until, at the sight of the burning rain forests, they realised that the best pharmacy in the world was going up in flames.

The awareness of its utility should not be the rescuers’ sole motive, however. If we only take up arms in defence of the earth where our immediate living conditions are threatened, we shall soon be sitting amidst the ruins of a barren planet. It is (unfortunately, some would say) not the case that when the trees die, man also dies immediately. There are no trees in the Mongolian steppes, but they are still not dead. The fact is, as an Indian chief once said: “After the deaths of plants and animals, you will die of the great loneliness in your hearts.” An appeal has been filed against this death sentence. This book contains a few passages from the defence counsel’s speech.”

Unsettling Welfare: Reconstruction of Social Policy by Gordon Hughes; Gail Lewis; (£24.00)Publisher: Routledge — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0415181348]Condition: Very Good. Would be Near Fine were it not for the blank lable to upper wrap.Description: The book deals with the rise and fall of the welfare state in the UK, and traces the ways in which the relationship between social welfare and the state has been reconstructed at the turn of the twentieth century. In particular, it focuses on the consequences of the break-up of the political, economic and social settlements that had sustained the 'old' welfare state in the thirty years after the Second World War. This is the fourth of five books in a new series of introductory social policy texts published by Routledge in association with The Open University. The series, called Social Policy: Welfare, Power and Diversity, examines central issues in the study of how social welfare is organized in the UK today.Notes: Size: 4to Crown (25 x 19cm Approx.). 406 pages. Forming Nation, Framing Welfare by Gail Lewis (£23.00)Publisher: Routledge — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0415181305]Condition: Near Fine. Plain white lable to upper wrap otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: This book considers the ways in which the development of social welfare in the UK has been intimately woven into the construction of the nation. The growth of the state's involvement in social welfare is at the heart of these processes, but the book also explores the ways in which the making of the family, struggles over social order and the rise of philanthropy played central roles in the construction of both nation and welfare. Drawing on a range of case studies dealing with the family, education, poverty and unemployment, this innovative book teases out the intersections between images of the nation and social welfare's purposes, providers and beneficiaries.Notes: Size: 4to Crown (25 x 19cm Approx.). 296 pages. The Divine Mistress by Samuel Edwards (£23.00)Publisher: Cassell & Co. — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0304937177]Condition: Very Good - in Good DJ. Edges of DJ somewhat ruffled, laminate lifting at the joint of the upper panel. Price Clipped.Description: The Life of Emilie Du Chatelet, Voltaire's Mistress. From the cover: “Voltaire’s mistress for fourteen years, Émilie du Châtelet became a legend in her time. In this aristocratic woman, Voltaire found his match. At Cirey they renovated her husband’s chateau (with Voltaire’s money), quarrelling violently over the merest detail. With guests or without, they dined when they felt like it, dressed in the height of fashion, by shimmering candlelight. Emilie brought peace and stimulation to Voltaire’s eccentricity, and his writings flourished. “Madame,” wrote Thomas Carlyle, “watched over all his interests and liabilities.” Émilie died in childbirth at the age of forty- three. At her deathbed her husband, her last lover — the child’s father — and Voltaire wept together.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Black boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 275 pages. Robo Sapiens: Evolution of a New Species by Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio (£21.00)Publisher: Cambridge, London: The MIT Press — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0262133822]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Description: Jacket illustration: A face robot from the Hara-Kobayashi laboratory of the Science University of Tokyo. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Around the world, scientists and engineers are participating in a high-stakes race to build the first intelligent robot. Many robots already exist — automobile factories are full of them. But the new generation of robots will be something else: smart machines that act ever more like living creatures.

What will happen then? With our prosthetic limbs, titanium hips, and artificial eyes, we are already beginning to resemble our machines. And when we implant chips in our bodies to connect ourselves directly to computers, the likeness will become only more pronounced. Science fiction will have become science fact.

Meanwhile — and equally important — our machines are beginning to resemble us. Robotic spiders, crabs, geckos, and dogs are already spilling from the laboratories. The next steps are to re-create Homo sapiens itself and then go beyond. Robots can already walk, talk, and dance; they can react to human facial expressions and obey verbal commands. When scientists go on to create fully autonomous robots with greater intelligence than human beings, will they be our partners or our rivals? Will it be simply a robotic revolution or a true extension of evolution? Could machines and humankind meld into a single species — Robo sapiens ?

In Robo sapiens, award-winning journalists Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio present the next generation of intelligent robots and their makers. Accompanying brilliant photographs of more than a hundred robots are extensive interviews with robotics pioneers, anecdotal field notes with behind-the-scenes information, and easy-to-understand technical data about the machines. Robo sapiens is a field guide to our mechanical future.”

Smith, Pennsylvania receives the full attention it so richly deserves. From the fertile farmland of Lancaster County, where the famous Old Order Amish still plough their fields with horses and mules, to the rushing white water of the Youghiogheny River, to the Gettysburg and Brandywine battlefields and Valley Forge, to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, to Philadelphia’s Chestnut Street and Independence Hall, to Lake Erie and its unique Presque Isle, Smith captures all of Pennsylvania’s beauty during every season of the year. In an informative text which complements the photographs, Cronan Minton describes Pennsylvania as “the archetypal American state”. He traces the state’s fascinating history — from the days of its founder, William Penn through to the Revolutionary War and the Westward movement of the pioneers, up to the Industrial Revolution and the development of Pennsylvania’s canal and railroad systems, to its present status as one of America’s four greatest industrial and urban statesNotes: Illustrated by Clyde H. Glass: The Strange History of the Lyne Stephens Fortune by Jenifer Roberts (£19.50)Publisher: Templeton Press — 2003Binding: Paperback Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0954558901]Condition: Very Good. Single reading crease to the spine. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “When a Cornish servant girl gave birth to an illegitimate son in 1731, she little realised that he would become one of the richest industrialists in Europe. William Stephens, a man of genius, lived through the earthquake which destroyed Lisbon and became friends with the Marquis of Pombal, dictator of Portugal. Opening a glass factory in the village of Marinha Grande, he was granted a monopoly of glass supply and exemption from all taxes. Intelligent and charismatic, he charmed dictators, queens and princes into extending his privileges, allowing him to build up enormous wealth. Decades later, his massive fortune transformed a young cousin into the richest commoner in England. Soon it passed into the hands of a French ballerina who scandalised society by her sexual adventures, while the infamous Court of Chancery creamed off the wealth into the pockets of lawyers. This fascinating story, which spans two centuries, follows dramatic events in European history: a tale of earthquake, wars and revolution told through the lives of a strange and compelling mix of characters.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). 366 pages. Sharks Among Minnows: Germany's First Fighter Pilots and the Fokker Eindecker Period, July 1915 to September 1916 by Norman Franks (£19.50)Publisher: London: Grub Street — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1902304926]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [4]; Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “In early 1915, with the world war in its infancy, the attention of Allied and German air strategists was focussed on trying to stop each other making reconnaissances and artillery observation sorties over the lines. Various ingenious schemes met with limited success, then suddenly in the summer of 1915 there was a breakthrough for the Germans — the arrival at the front of the Fokker Eindecker.

Its advantage was the synchronised machine gun firing through the whirling blades of the propeller — a revolution in contemporary air fighting. Those German pilots disposed to flying these first single-seat aeroplanes, if successful, soon became famous and the first aces. Names such as Boelcke, Immelmann, Wintgens, Parschau, Mulzer, Hohndorf, Frankl and von Althaus quickly became the first heroes to the German public and the first winners of the coveted Pour le Merits — the famed Blue Max.

These men and others caused havoc amongst British and French airmen over the Western Front for just over a year, something history has called the ‘Fokker Scourge’. Although comparatively small in numbers, they were deadly when attacking lightly armed, almost defenceless British and French aeroplanes; truly ‘sharks among minnows’.

Norman Franks has covered this period in detail, bringing to light new information and insights, and explaining how these early German fighter pilots achieved their kills, who they shot down, when and where. Contains many rare and previously unpublished photos.”

Capability Brown and the Eighteenth-century English Landscape by Roger Turner (£18.00)Publisher: London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297787349]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Facsimiles; Colour photographs; Colour plates; Black & white plates; Gazetteer;

From the cover: “Throughout England, and particularly on the estates of great country houses such as Stowe, Petworth and Blenheim, are large areas of parkland which embody the ideal of the natural English landscape: pastoral scenes of lakes and streams bordered by softly undulating meadows, with clumps of broad-leaved trees casting their shade on smooth expanses of close-cropped grass. It requires a leap of the imagination to realize that such apparently artless scenes are by no means a happy accident of nature, but are the result of one man’s meticulous planning. Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown created scores of parks for the English gentry and nobility in the late eighteenth century, and his talent for envisaging the ‘great capabilities’ of a piece of land, combined with the age’s passion for the ‘simple charms that genuine Art supplies’ (in the words of his epitaph), brought about a revolution in English garden design. Old fashioned knot gardens and formal parterres, gravel walks and topiary were swept away, and acres of waste land were remodelled with the blithe confidence of a landscape painter. Stiff, formal elements were softened, straight lines eliminated and every trace of geometry banished, to be replaced with meandering walks and streams, serpentine lakes and vistas of gently rolling hills and vales.

After an introduction to eighteenth-century England and gardens before 1750, Roger Turner gives a carefully researched account of Lancelot Brown’s humble origins and rising fortunes, his marriage and his family, the course of his career and the recognition it brought him, culminating in his appointment as Master Gardener to George HI. The creation of a ‘natural’ landscape involved considerable grooming and disciplining of nature: thousands of men were employed to excavate lakes, dam rivers and transplant not only mature trees but also the hills they stood on. Details of the practical and technical aspects of the work, its key characteristics and the plants and trees used, form a background to individual portraits in words and pictures of the finished — and apparently effortlessly beautiful — landscapes. Fifteen of Brown’s major works are described in full and illustrated with original plans, eighteenth-century pictures and modern photographs, showing the gardens’ development over the centuries to maturity. Having discussed Brown’s other works and appraised his astonishingly far-reaching influence, which transformed the English landscape and people’s perception of it, the author provides, finally, a gazetteer of Brown’s works. The information he provides for potential visitors includes, as far as possible, an appraisal of the present condition of each park, drawing attention to the dangers that road construction, agriculture, inappropriate planting and neglect present to these fine landscapes.”

From the cover: “Mathematician, philosopher, prolific author, translator and astrologer, Adelard of Bath still found time to tutor the future Henry II, to assist at the Exchequer and to compose lively treatises on subjects ranging from the care of falcons to the uses of the astrolabe. Born in 1080 into a bishop’s extended familia, Adelard took full advantage of the exceptional opportunities such a background had to offer, studying at Tours and Laon and travelling to Syria and Greece. His translations from the Arabic of Euclid’s Elements and his role in the dissemination in the West of astronomic tables, hindu-arabic numerals and the concept of zero, made him a key contributor to the conceptual revolution which initiated modern scientific methods.

In this comprehensive study of Adelard’s work aimed at the general reader, Louise Cochrane discusses his numerous manuscripts and their influence on contemporary thought, as well as presenting new information about his life.”

The century was nearly half over when the nuclear age began and the computer revolution swept the world. Throughout the 20th century, oil has been the great enabler providing from one basic resource a rainbow range of products.

Based upon unrestricted access to company archives, A Century in Oil marks the 100th anniversary of The “Shell” Transport and Trading Company one of the parents of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group. By most measurements Shell is the largest oil enterprise in the world, and the largest organization of any kind in Europe. In a phenomenal industry, Shell could fairly claim to be a phenomenon in its own right — global in scope but always human in scale. Century in Oil tells the frank and dramatic story of a company — daring, inventive, and sometimes controversial — whose work has touched, and continues to touch, all our daily lives.”

The Oxford Illustrated History of Britain by Edited by Kenneth O. Morgan (£16.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1986Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0192851748]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Single reading crease to the spine. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers. Text complete, clean and tight but slightly age-tanned at the margins.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Chronological Tables; Colour Photographs; Maps; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “This beautifully illustrated volume tells the story of Britain and her peoples over two thousand years, from the coming of the Roman legions to the present day. The dramatic narrative of developments throughout the British Isles is taken up in turn by. ten leading historians, who offer the fruits of the best modern scholarship to the general reader in an authoritative and attractive form.

From the authors’ exploration of the relationship between the political, economic, social, and cultural transformations in British history there emerges a vivid and sometimes surprising picture of a continuous turmoil of change in every period. But consensus, no less than conflict, is a part of the story: the authors emphasize the elements of continuity in British cultural and social ideals, bringing out that special awareness of nationality and patriotism which has been such a distinctive feature of British society.

By relating both these strands in the British experience, and by exploring the many ways in which Britain has shaped and been shaped by contact with Europe and the wider world, this comprehensive work brings the reader face to face with the past, and the foundations of modern British society.

The book includes over two hundred and fifty illustrations, of which twenty-four are colour plates, all specially chosen to illuminate the text. For easy reference the book also contains a consolidated chronology of events, genealogies of monarchs, and a table of prime ministers. An annotated guide to further reading is provided at the end of the volume.”

Modern Warfare 1851-Present by H. W. [Hannsjoachim Wolfgang] Koch (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241282]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a diagonal crease to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Colour Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: “The third and final volume of the trilogy beginning with Medieval Warfare, and continuing with The Rise of Modern Warfare, is Modern Warfare 1815-Present by H W Koch. Medieval Warfare covered the development of weapons, strategy and tactics from the Fall of the Roman Empire to the Thirty Years’ War. The second volume, The Rise of Modern Warfare, covered the period from the end of the Thirty Years’ War in 1648 to the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. This volume carries the story forward from the Battle of Waterloo and the Congress of Vienna in 1815, through the development of heavy artillery, rapid-fire weapons, such as the machine gun, and other advances of the nineteenth century which presaged the wars of attrition such as World War I through World War II to the present day.

The year-long siege of Sebastopol during the Crimean War and the Siege of Vicksburg during the American Civil War, as well as the Virginia campaigns of Robert E Lee, were precursors of modern total warfare to a far greater extent than Britain’s easy colonial victories in India and Africa fought during the same period. The rapid victories of the Prussian armies of von Moltke over Austria at Koniggratz in 1866 and the French at Sedan in 1870 were the results of a modern massed army fighting against traditional professional armies not greatly advanced from their eighteenth century counterparts. The introduction of the needle gun, the Maxim gun and the Lee-Enfield rifle, combined with the evolution of the tank as a replacement for armoured cavalry were developments bound to change the nature of warfare in the twentieth century.

The war of attrition fought by Britain in South Africa, including the long sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking, as well as the six-month long siege of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War were portents of a new age in warfare for the warlords of Europe who were to launch World War I. They hoped for a war that would end in weeks. Millions of combatants and civilians alike were slaughtered in the four-year-long war of attrition in Europe between 1914 and 1918. The introduction of aerial warfare and naval blockades, which could starve a nation into submission, made twentieth century warfare unlike any previously encountered. By the time of World War II, whole nations, not merely their armies, found themselves locked in deadly combat for years until one side was worn down into helpless impotence. No one in Europe could escape the effect of the total war that was waged from 1939 to 1945.

The horrendous results of the holocaust which caused the deaths of tens of millions altered the character of warfare once again after World War II. The entire progression from “wars of gentlemen” through total war to the post-1945 age of limited war, including Korea, Algeria and Vietnam, as well as the four wars in the Middle East is described. The limited wars of the post-1945 period were perhaps the precursors of a new, even more terrible form of total conflict should a third world war ever occur.

Illustrated by hundreds of contemporary paintings, action photographs in both color and monochrome, and replete with technical drawings, maps and cutaway illustrations of the relevant weapons as well as special drawings of the uniforms of the period. Modern Warfare should become a classic and essential reading in the library of anyone interested in modern militarv historv.”

From the flap: “The theme of this book is the relation of America to China, in a larger sense to Asia. The vehicle of the theme is the career of General Stilwell. Why Stilwell? Because he combined a career focused en China with background and character that were quintessentially American; because his connection with China spanned the period that shaped the present from the dramatic opening moment of 1911, year of the Revolution, to 1944, decisive year in the decline of the Nationalist Government; because his service in the intervening years was a prism of the times — as language officer from 1920 to 1923 in the time of the warlords, as officer of the 15th Infantry in Tientsin from 1926 to 1929 at the time of the rise to power of Chiang Kai-Shek, as Military Attaché from 1935 to 1939 at the time of Japanese invasion, lastly as theatre commander in World War II.”Notes: Illustrated by Brigadier General Frank Dorn (Maps). A Review of Current Banking Theory and Practice by S. K. [Saroj Kumar] Basu (£14.50)Publisher: London & Basingstoke: The Macmillan Press — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0333135385]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper reinforced at the spine ends with tape. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: 2nd (revised by Alak Ghosh, enlarged) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1971] Contains: Tables;

From the cover: “A quiet revolution has been taking place in the theory and practice of central and commercial banking during the last twenty-five or thirty years. It may be of some interest to draw together the experiences of the various countries and integrate the underlying trends as constituting part of a general pattern. As the central bank forms the keystone of the financial structure, recent trends in its role and financial policies have been sought to be interpreted in considerable detail. The changing role of the commercial banks has also been duly stressed. Further, the problems posed by the rise and growth of non-banking financial intermediaries like hire-purchase finance companies and development banks have called for close examination. Lastly, as the working of the international financial system has excited a great deal of controversy and as plans for the reform of the present system, and even for its replacement, have been widely discussed, it has been thought fit to devote some attention to such issues as a ‘central bank for central banks’ and the recently introduced ‘special drawing rights’ system as possible solutions of the problem of international liquidity. Although the coverage of the book extends over both developed and developing countries, the backdrop, by and large, has been the economic and financial structure of the latter with India occupying the centre of the stage.”
