China At War by Freda Utley (£249.00)Publisher: London: Faber & Faber — 1939Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little loss, heavy damp-marking to the reverse showing slightly at the panels. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Endpapers and blanks a little grubby. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Map to the rear slightly mis-folded. Description: Illustrated by way of: Frontispiece; Black & White Photographs; Fold-Out Maps [1];

From the cover: “Freda Utley, who has just returned from the seat of war in the Far East, gives us in this book a vivid description of the Chinese war, as she has seen it from the Chinese side, backed by a brilliant expose of the Chinese political situation. One of the very few British newspaper correspondents in the war zone (she represented the News Chronicle), the only Englishwoman to visit the Yangtze fronts, and a world-renowned authority on Far Eastern matters, Miss Utley is quite exceptionally well informed, as readers of her last book, Japan’s Feet of Clay, know. A trained and accurate observer, she allows her sympathy with the Chinese cause to warm but not to warp the truth. A naturally straightforward writer, she makes her story easy to read, deeply interesting, and therefore deeply moving.”

The Osprey Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft by Bill Gunston (£77.00)Publisher: London: Osprey Aerospace — 1995Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1855324059]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper has been misfolded by the publisher at the head of the lower panel and is very slightly creased at the foot of the spine which has a small ding mid-way. Description: First in this edition. [First: 1983 as Aircraft of the Soviet Union] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “This huge work constitutes Bill Gunston’s 330th book. Commenting on its content, the author states It has taken more blood, sweat and tears than any 20 ordinary books. For one thing, at least half of what we thought we knew about Russian aircraft has turned out to be wrong.

At last, this exhaustive compilation can be put before the public with confidence that it documents the true histories of some 1000 types of aircraft. At last, the ‘red herrings’ and spurious details invented (mostly in the two decades between 1950 and 1970 by people in the West) have been swept away and replaced by the facts. It can confidently be claimed that no book in the history of aviation has ever contained anything like as much new information.

The author thought his task would be greatly eased by the fact that in 1983 he had written the then definitive work on the subject, entitled Aircraft of the Soviet Union. This was the bible on the subject for many years, but when it came to compiling this new work, Gunston had to check over every word because so much of what was thought to be fact has turned out to be wrong in varying degrees. Moreover, as there is no longer a Soviet Union the title of the completed work had to change.

This in turn meant that the starting point had to go back from 1918 to 1875!

The main text is prefaced by sections on aircraft designations, engines, air-launched weapons, avionics and many other topics including Western reporting names. At the end of the book is a section on Ekranoplans, which the West often call by the clumsy title wing-in-ground-effect vehicles . Some of these are veritable flying ships, with awesome size and performance, and many are products of aircraft design teams. This section itself could have formed a complete book, and much of the information included here has not previously been published.

It needed the proverbial shoehorn to get it all in between one pair of covers, as the amount of information provided is astronomic. Pick any type and compare its treatment with what you get in any other source — even one dealing with just a specific design team. This volume really is the ultimate work on Russian aircraft.”

Television and Radio: Everybody's Soapbox by Bruce Parker; Nigel Farrell; (£14.50)Publisher: Blandford Press — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0713713062]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edges of the dust wrapper slightly ruffled. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with cartoons. From the cover: “The chance to appear on a radio or television programme is the opportunity of a lifetime to speak to a mass audience. Yet how many people appreciate the value of such an offer, or really know how to make the most of it? With the expansion of broadcasting in the 1980s there will be more air time available to members of the public in scores of programmes, particularly those put out by regional and local television and radio stations. Nearly everyone has something to gain by a chance to appear on the air: the father searching for his teenage daughter, the secretary of the local drama group which is putting on an unusual play, the harassed mother seeking action about the damp walls of her council house, or the managing director who wants a little publicity for his firm’s award-winning product. Everybody’s Soapbox explains in an entertaining way not only how to use your time on the air effectively but how to go about obtaining it in the first place. The authors take a detailed and often humorous look into what happens behind the scenes of broadcasting. Some of the pitfalls are described, including the ones to avoid when being interviewed. Don Osmond’s cartoons complement the light-hearted but informative text. Much advice is provided, particularly for those who find themselves on the air for the first time. Radio and television techniques are revealed and the jargon is made clear. There is guidance on how to handle an interview and how best to present yourself. You can also find out the right way to deal with the film crew which may arrive at your house.”Notes: Illustrated by Don Osmond. Size: 8¾" x 5¾". [First published 1975 by Gower Press Limited] From the cover: “Since it was first published in 1975 this Gower Handbook has established itself as an authoritative guide to what is becoming a crucial area of management activity. The entire text has been brought up to date and new material has been added on management audits, cost reduction methods, productivity schemes, environmental impacts, output budgeting and the role of costs in pricing. The structure of the Handbook, however, remains the same. Part One explains the nature of costs and the principles of cost control. Part Two reviews the most important approaches and techniques in the management of costs, while Part Three demonstrates how to apply these methods to the main management functions. Each chapter is followed by an annotated list of further reading, and the Handbook concludes with a Glossary of terms and definitions.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Problems in Labor Relations by Benjamin M. Selekman; Sylvia Kopald Selekman; Stephen H. Fuller; (£12.50)Publisher: McGraw-Hill Book Co. — 1958Binding: Hardback Condition: Good+. Gently faded at the spine. Edges of the text block lightly soiled and tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: 2nd edition. [First Edition: 1950] From the cover: “When the first edition of this book was written in the tense atmosphere of the immediate postwar years, the question may well have been asked whether collective bargaining was an enduring institution. The year 1946, for instance, was marked by repeated, costly strikes in one basic industry after another. Indeed, in a reaction against this thrust of power on the part of new, industry-wide unions, the Taft-Hartley Act was enacted in 1947. It marked a reversal of the trend started with the validation of the Wagner Act by the Supreme Court in 1937. For now trade unions, too, were under surveil lance and could be made subject to charges of unfair labor practices as only management had been under the Wagner Act. Other restrictions were placed upon them by the Federal law, and a number of states enacted even more stringent legislation in the form of so-called “right-to-work” laws.

At this writing, ten years later, it can safely be said that, whatever legisla tion may still be forthcoming, collective bargaining has nevertheless survived as a permanent institution. Hardly any responsible managements would be willing to say now, regardless of their feelings in the past, that they preferred to function without unions or that they could do so even if they so desired. Problems still continue, some of them serious in nature. Whereas in the first five or six years after the war it was repeated strikes, some of an emergency nature, that troubled the nation, now it is “creeping” inflation. Indeed, many observers think that the continuous inflationary trend can be traced in large part to the periodic wage settlements, including fringe benefits, entered into by large unions and large corporations which establish patterns for the econ omy as a whole. The debate goes on as to whether unions are the primary cause of the inflationary trend or whether it is caused by corporations when they translate wage increases into price increases which, it is charged, are greater than just the wage component. To this management replies, ‘Well, surely, prices must be greater than the amount of the wage increase because our wage increase creates a cycle which makes everything we buy cost more. It costs us many times more to replace plants and machinery we built before the inflationary cycle began, not to say anything about raw and semi-finished material’.

The truth of the matter is that problems will always be with us: this or that issue will continuously arise in the highly dynamic industrial environment that characterizes this nation. Collective bargaining does not in itself solve major economic and social problems. What it does provide is a procedure by means of which problems can be identified and handled.”

Trade Unions in a Free Society: Studies in The Organisation of Labour in Britain and the U.S.A. by B. C. [Benjamin Charles] Roberts (£12.50)Publisher: Hutchinson — 1962Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with rubbing at the tips of both panels and light soiling to the lower panel. Price Clipped. Previous owners' inscription to the pastedown. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: 2nd edition. [First Edition: 1959] From the cover: “This is a new, revised and enlarged edition of a smaller work published in 1959, and appears at a time when there is a mounting interest in the role, powers and duties of trade unions in the British economy and in the standard of living of the working man.

The original work attracted a great deal of attention by its penetrating analysis of the role of the trade unions, and by its courage in advising them to ‘come to terms with the market economy, which is an essential feature of a free society’. This edition was quickly sold, and it was decided to prepare a new one, bringing the argument up to date and comparing British trade unions with unions in America.

A reviewer in Economica said of the first edition of this book and also of Unions in America by the same author, published by Princeton University: ‘Mr. Roberts writes very well… One wishes the two works could be combined together, for they would make a first-class study in comparative industrial relations and the positions of trade unions in the world’s two chief democracies’. This has now been done.”

The Grub Street Dictionary of International Aircraft Nicknames, Variants and Colloquial Terms by John Horton (£11.50)Publisher: Grub Street — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0948817755]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dustwrapper.Description: From the flap: “John Horton has compiled a comprehensive A-Z of aircraft names which is as rich and fascinating as the history of aviation itself. His book, the first of its kind on the market, explores evocative names such as the Seven Day Bus, the Supermarine PB9 built in a week and the Aardvark, which refers to the General Dynamics F-III and its modus operandi, rather than its appearance as a great long nose grubbing the dirt. The subculture of informal and colloquial names has remained as vigorous and inventive throughout the century and Horton covers models from World War 1 to Vietnam. War in the Gulf: From The Invasion of Kuwait to the Day of Victory and Beyond by Thomas B. Allen; F. Clifton Berry; Norman Polmar; (£11.50)Publisher: Time Warner — 1991Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0708853366]Condition: Very Good+. A little wear to the edges of the wraps, some fading of the upper panel near spine. Internally bright and clean.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Television viewers throughout the world saw the Persian Gulf War while it happened. War in the Gulf translates the immediacy of that televised war into the traditional form for recounting events: a book.

The idea for the book came from the Cable News Network, which provided the authors with CNN’s eyewitness record of the war. The strength of television news is its imagery; the weakness of television is its fleetingness. Images flash past, reporters’ words fade away. To preserve this perishable chronicle, CNN turned to a team of book writers. Their sources included the films and transcripts of CNN war coverage. They have made a narrative of instants of war.

Television coverage of the Persian Gulf War changed the face of war. No longer can war be an event faraway in time and place. Television made war immediate. That is part of the story of the Persian Gulf War. Reporting on the war means reporting about television.

The war, through television, was not something that happened over there, but something that happened now. Viewers in a score of nations saw their loved ones in a war while the war was being fought. American mothers and fathers saw sons and daughters at the moment a desert wind swept through a tent city, at the moment that tracers laced a far-off sky. Iraqis saw a Tomahawk missile skimming the Baghdad skyline — and television viewers simultaneously saw the Iraqis seeing the Tomahawk. These images within images spiralled on and on, each a moment that wiped out distance, leaving only time and feeling.”

An Illustrated History of British Railways' Workshops: Locomotive, Carriage and Wagon Building and Maintenance, from 1825 to the Present Day by Edgar Larkin (£10.50)Publisher: Heathfield Railway Publications — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: A Later Printing. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Within British Railways a main works has always been classified as one which is equipped to build and/or undertake heavy classified repairs of locomotives or rolling stock. This comprehensive volume provides a broad pictorial record of the railway workshops that were inherited by British Railways at Nationalisation in 1948.

Following an outline description of the development of the workshops established by the various railway companies, a brief history of each works is then given. The author was personally involved at a high level with the reorganisation and the inevitable rationalisation of the works and has been able to draw upon his own intimate knowledge of the subject as well as documentation specially prepared to assist in planning BR’s workshop requirements.

This material includes plans of all the main locomotive works which have never before been published and offer a unique record of the works as they were at the time of Nationalisation. Details and illustrations of typical or particularly well-known products are included, together with much statistical information.

In addition to locomotives and rolling stock there is the human aspect of supplying and maintaining railway equipment and the author, who was responsible for establishing the LMS’s apprentice training scheme, describes the establishment and running of BR’s works training schools.

The author, born in 1900, had a long and distinguished railway career, serving in the railway workshops of Britain for most of his 52 years of railway service, spanning the period 1914 to 1966. He was chairman of many policy committees dealing with the organisation of the railways’ main works and was subsequently appointed Deputy General Manager of BR’s Workshop Division, with its 60,000 staff, following an appointment with the BTC as their First Director of Work Study, reporting directly to the Chairman, Lord Robertson.”

The Tarnished Crown: Crisis in the House of Windsor by Anthony Holden (£10.50)Publisher: London, New York, Toronto, Sydney & Auckland: Bantam Press — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0670846244]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is faded at the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Tables; Genealogical Tables;

From the cover: “Can the British monarchy survive beyond the reign of the present Queen? After the extraordinary series of crises which marked Elizabeth II’s ‘annus horribilis’, 1993 began with the embattled House of Windsor in even worse disarray. Following his separation from his popular wife, Prince Charles’s prospects of inheriting the throne have been further compromised by the revelations of the ‘Camillagate’ tape. As the Queen begins to pay taxes, many hard-pressed Britons still consider the monarchy’s wealth disproportionate to the times. Can Charles ever become King? What does the long-term future hold for Diana, Princess of Wales? Should the British monarchy surrender its post-imperial splendour for the humbler style of the ‘bicycle kings’ of Scandinavia?

No-one is more qualified to answer these questions than Anthony Holden, Britain’s leading royal commentator for more than a decade. His bestselling biography of the Prince of Wales, published in 1988 to a mixture of acclaim and controversy, was hailed by The Times as ‘definitive’. Recent events have also proved it remarkably prophetic. Renowned for the shrewdness of his insights, the accuracy of his reporting and the reliability of his judgements, Holden argues that the monarchy must change to survive. He traces the collapse of the ‘family’ monarchy, the true extent of the Queen’s wealth, and the changing associations between crown, church and parliament. Holden also analyses the failure of four royal marriages, throwing new light on relations between the royals and those they have wed. He examines the role of British institutions from the press to Downing Street in the monarchy’s current plight, and looks ahead to the twenty-first century. Will Charles step aside in favour of his son William? Or will Britain become a republic with an elected president?

In this important, authoritative and revealing book, Anthony Holden makes a major contribution to the national debate on the future of the constitutional monarchy.”

The Tarnished Crown: Crisis in the House of Windsor by Anthony Holden (£10.50)Publisher: Bantam — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0670846244]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the spine ends with a nick at the top edge of the leading corner. Internally bright and clean.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Tables; Genealogical Tables;

War in the Gulf: From The Invasion of Kuwait to the Day of Victory and Beyond by Thomas B. Allen; F. Clifton Berry; Norman Polmar; (£10.50)Publisher: Maxwell - MacMillan — 1991Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0708853366]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Upper wrapper slighty curled. Lightly rubbed at the tips of the wraps and some of the pages. A slight bow to the text block. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated with colour photographs.

Echoes: Twenty-Five Years of the Telegraph Magazine by Compiled by Joanna Anstey (£9.50)Publisher: W. H. Allen — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1852271264]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Faint wrinkle to the covering of the upper board which just shows through the upper panel of the dust wrapper.Description: From the cover: “On Friday, 25 September 1964, The Daily Telegraph published the first issue of its weekly colour magazine. Now, 25 years and some 1300 issues later, here is a small selection by some of the best-known names in contemporary writing drawn from the wealth of articles that gave the Telegraph magazine its reputation as the most literate, stylish and adventurous of all the colour supplements.

These memorable and timeless pieces cover a range of subjects: historical topics such as Laurie Lee at his most poignant and poetical reporting on Churchill’s lying-in-state in 1965, Arthur Koestler reliving his bizarre experiences in France during the Second World War; light-hearted pieces from writers sent off on unlikely projects: Margaret Drabble loves her week at Butlin’s; Clement Freud loathes learning to ski (he breaks his ankle); John Betjeman writes a ghost story ;Anthony Burgess glances affectionately at British girls; There are revealing short ‘Opinion’ pieces: Harry Secombe — ‘Ever Seen a Fat Terrorist?’, Richard Gordon on Suburbia.

The collection includes short and quirky pieces by Dirk Bogarde, Bob Hope and Quentin Crisp. Russell Harty tracks down Annigoni for an unusual interview in 1978, John le Carre finds Alec Guinness is Smiley. Edna O’Brien’s Dublin and Rebecca West’s Venice are lyrical evocations, and Tom Wolfe fantasizes wittily and chillingly on how Britain could be in the year 2020.

Over forty articles are collected here, a distillation of some of the best writing of the past 25 years which will be dipped into and enjoyed for many years to come.”

From his boyhood, army service, Oxford years and his experience as a barrister, Sir Robin goes on to describe how he won his way into television, and made his name, as a newscaster and interviewer, in the newly-founded ITN. He explains why he stood as a parliamentary candidate, and how he came to join the celebrated team of reporters on Panorama, then the flagship of BBC Television’s journalistic fleet. Sir Robin, it has been said, ‘has occupied a place on the political stage longer than anyone but the Sovereign herself’. Here, he recalls reporting the momentous Suez parliamentary debates, and his historic interview with Egypt’s President Nasser. He remembers his controversial role at the centre of television’s coverage of eight general elections. And, for the first time, gives his unique personal reminiscences of the six Prime Ministers — Macmillan, Home, Wilson, Heath, Callaghan and Thatcher — that he has interviewed.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5½". Slightest rubbing at the extremities otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “Fergal Keane’s Letter to Daniel, a heartfelt message addressed to his newborn son, attracted an unprecedented response when it was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Keane charts South Africa’s extraordinary voyage from violence and despair to the optimism of Nelson Mandela’s Rainbow Nation, and files vivid reports from the Far East. Alongside reflections on his native Ireland, his upbringing and early career there — and some provocative thoughts on national identity — he writes of his friendship with the Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, pays homage to a beloved colleague who met his death gathering news, and describes being attacked by a Mongolian herdsman on the Trans-Siberian Express.

Readers of his earlier books on South Africa and Rwanda — Bondage of Fear and Season of Blood — will recognize the extraordinary intelligence and humanity of Fergal Keane’s work; others will find in this collection the perfect introduction.”

The Complete Plain Words by Sir Ernest Gowers (£5.50)Publisher: Penguin — 1978Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0140205543]Condition: Good. Pages gently age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “Ernest Gowers wrote The Complete Plain Words as a result of an invitation from the Treasury, which was concerned about the prevailing standards of official English. Apart from two chapters on grammar and punctuation, this excellent guide is wholly concerned with ‘the choice and arrangement of words in such a way as to get an idea as exactly as possible out of one mind into another’. It is not only for civil servants that clarity of expression is important. It is equally vital in dictating a business letter, preparing a minute, writing an advertisement, or reporting a crime. The Complete Plain Words by Sir Ernest Gowers (£5.50)Publisher: Penguin — 1977Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0140205543]Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “Ernest Gowers wrote The Complete Plain Words as a result of an invitation from the Treasury, which was concerned about the prevailing standards of official English. Without a trace of pomposity or pudder, The Complete Plain Words gently administers the medicine we all require. Reconstructed from the material in two earlier booklets, this reference work can rank with such authoritative books as The King’s English and A Dictionary of Modern English Usage.”Notes: Size: A Format (7" x 4½"). 332 pages. Grand Inquisitor: Memoirs by Robin Day (£4.00)Publisher: Pan — 1990Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 033007878]Condition: Good. An acceptable reading copy only.Description: From the cover: “Revealing the struggles and gambles behind his seemingly unimpeded success, his often stormy relationship with the BBC; combining trenchant opinions and challenging ideas with a wealth of hilarious anecdotes, Sir Robin tells us how the hard-hitting bespectacled reporter of the fifties became a television superstar. And, for the first time, gives his unique personal reminiscences of the six Prime Ministers — Macmillan, Home, Wilson, Heath, Callaghan and Thatcher — that he has interviewed..”Notes: Size: A Format (7" x 4½"). 345 pages.
