Freedom and Limit: A Dialogue Between Literature and Christian Doctrine by Paul S. Fiddes (£128.00)Publisher: Macmillan — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0333491424]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the first blank — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium.

From the cover: “Writers of novels, plays and poems use their imagination with an evident freedom; by contrast, makers of Christian doctrine seem to impose limits, reducing the open-ended meaning of images to exact concepts and summing up the loose ends of stories in one unified Story. But the author of this study sets out to show how images and stories in literature can actually help the theologian to make doctrinal statements, while at the same time careful theological thinking can assist the critical reading of literary texts. Such a dialogue is worked out in studies of the poetry of William Blake and Gerard Manley Hopkins, and the novels of D. H. Lawrence, Iris Murdoch and William Golding. Here the tension between the freedom of imagination and the limits of doctrine is seen to be only a part of more far-reaching tensions of freedom in human life, which account for a sense of ‘fallenness’ and which a dialogue between literature and Christian doctrine can do much to illuminate. In all this, the relationship between imagination and revelation is never far from the centre of discussion.”

History of Jewish Philosophy by Edited by Daniel H. Frank & Oliver Leaman (£54.00)Publisher: London & New York: Routledge — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0415080649]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Volume 2 in the series.

The Abolition of Man: Or, Reflections on Education with Special Reference to the Teaching of English in the Upper Forms of Schools by C. S. From the cover: “Lewis here argues that objective value actually exists and that to believe otherwise is to create nonsense. Human beings appreciate values such as beauty and goodness because such things are part of reality. If absolute morality is denied there will not be any progress for mankind as the things that matter most will be explained away. I am very doubtful whether history shows us one example of a man who, having stepped outside traditional morality and attained power, has used that power benevolently..”Notes: Size: 8½" x 5¾". 52 pages. India by Antonio Monroy (£27.00)Publisher: Orbis — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0856139467]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with the expected associated chafing to the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “India, the world’s second most populous country, possesses an extraordinary diversity of peoples whose complex religious, cultural and linguistic divisions are lost in antiquity. But this huge subcontinent is distinguished by an intense religious consciousness which permeates the whole of life. Every aspect of Indian culture is rooted in powerful religious and philosophical ideas — whether Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Muslim or Sikh; or the product of one of the many tribal and traditional cults still prevalent in village life.

This volume presents India as it is today, and discusses the history and geography of the land as it has influenced the development of myth, religion and language. India is a conjunction of contradictory elements where modern society is still influenced by the pressures of tribe and caste; where her art and architecture combine subtle metaphysics with an extraordinary sensuality and raw physical energy. This book celebrates, in words and pictures, the vigour and abundance of an age-old culture where traditions have been re-animated by the impetus of folklore, legend and imagination.

The brilliant colour photography of Antonio Martinelli and Roberto Meazza captures the events, places, and sensations of everyday India with sensitivity and sympathy. Antonio Monroy, who knows India and its culture well, has provided a text which describes and explains in detail the qualities which make India, its history, religion, society, architecture, even its cinema, unique amongst the world’s cultures. The result is a magnificent study of the subcontinent, both past and present.”

Wisdom Of The Wild: How We Treat Our Planet by Anon. (£26.50)Publisher: Word Wide Fund for Nature — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Presentation plate to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “There is no turning back. There never has been in history. Two hundred million American citizens are not going to leave the USA just to give back to the Indians the land that was stolen from them. The Inuit in Greenland are not about to climb into their kayaks to paddle back up the river of history. The wisdom with which “wild” peoples have animated their world cannot be fetched back at will. Nevertheless, there is a great deal to learn. This, for example: how, on the threshold of the third millennium, can we live once again in a finite world without consuming it? Pedagogues tell us that children need elements of the wild and disorder in order to become mentally sound adults. The child in its den is said to be subconsciously remembering the feeling of safety which our ancestors experienced in caves in the childhood of mankind. In Sweden, they let children fly back to the beginnings of humanity on the wings of their imagination, as it were. The wild as a tonic.

Henry David Thoreau’s suggestion that every major city should have some wildness in its vicinity (because otherwise its inhabitants would revert to the wild) is almost one hundred and fifty years old — and highly topical in view of the frustration which people feel in our concrete bunkers.

An end must be put to the dominance of the right angle. Protection programmes for spacious areas of wilderness have one purpose, among others, namely to preserve the charm of untouched nature. Real-life magic! Magic, or rather cheap tricks — that is what our oh-so-en-lightened world thought of the healing knowledge of the jungle Indians for such a long time. Until, at the sight of the burning rain forests, they realised that the best pharmacy in the world was going up in flames.

The awareness of its utility should not be the rescuers’ sole motive, however. If we only take up arms in defence of the earth where our immediate living conditions are threatened, we shall soon be sitting amidst the ruins of a barren planet. It is (unfortunately, some would say) not the case that when the trees die, man also dies immediately. There are no trees in the Mongolian steppes, but they are still not dead. The fact is, as an Indian chief once said: “After the deaths of plants and animals, you will die of the great loneliness in your hearts.” An appeal has been filed against this death sentence. This book contains a few passages from the defence counsel’s speech.”

It is an invitation to ponder, in the largest possible perspective, the weightier, more stubborn problems of human existence. It is an invitation to think — to wonder, to question, to speculate, to reason, even to fantasize — in the eternal search for wisdom. Christianity and the World Religions by Hans Kung (£24.00)Publisher: Collins — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 000217619X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with the expected associated abrasion to the dust wrapper. Top edge of the text block slightly soiled. Description: From the cover: “There are 4. 9 billion people living on this earth, and of these, 1. 4 billion are nominally Christian — exactly one third of the world’s population. That compares with 723 million Muslims, 583 million Hindus, and 274 million Buddhists.

Whether I am a Christian or a non-Christian, what is my attitude towards these other religions? That question is becoming ever more urgent, since not only the geographical horizon of our religious world but its historical horizon as well have expanded enormously. In a world so closely knit together, the old religious boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred, and we find large numbers of people with different faiths even in our own country, in our home town, in our factories and schools, often in our street. What indeed is my attitude towards these other religions?

Conversation between Christianity and Islam, Christianity and Hinduism, and Christianity and Buddhism had not been going on in earnest until this century. This book is an attempt to draw up something like an interim balance sheet of the twentieth-century conversation, in order to stimulate further discussion, and indeed to make us consider afresh what “religion” really is..”

William Tyndale: A Biography by David Daniell (£24.00)Publisher: Yale University Press — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0300061323]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with the gilt titling rubbed at the authors' name. Text complete, clean and tight. A nice copy overall. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles;

From the cover: “William Tyndale (1494-1536) was the first person to translate the Bible into English from its original Greek and Hebrew and the first to print the Bible in English, which he did in exile. Giving the laity access to the word of God outraged the clerical establishment in England: he was condemned, hunted, and eventually murdered. However, his masterly translation formed the basis of all English bibles — including the ‘King James Bible’, many of whose finest passages were taken unchanged, though unacknowledged, from Tyndale’s work.

This important book, published in the quincentenary year of his birth, is the first major biography of Tyndale in sixty years. It sets the story of his life in the intellectual and literary contexts of his immense achievement and explores his influence on the theology, literature and humanism of Renaissance and Reformation Europe.

David Daniell, editor of Tyndale’s New Testament and Tyndale’s Old Testament, eloquently describes the dramatic turns in Tyndale’s life. Born in England and educated at Oxford, Tyndale was ordained as a priest. When he decided to translate the Bible into English, he realised that it was impossible to do that work in England and moved to Germany, living in exile there and in the Low Countries while he translated and printed first the New Testament and then half of the Old Testament. These were widely circulated — and denounced — in England. Yet Tyndale continued to write from abroad, publishing polemics in defence of the principles of the English Reformation. He was seized in Antwerp, imprisoned in Vilvoorde Castle near Brussels and burnt at the stake for heresy in 1536.

Daniell discusses Tyndale’s achievement as biblical translator and expositor, analyses his writing, examines his stylistic influence on writers from Shakespeare to those of the twentieth century, and explores the reasons why he has not been more highly regarded. His book brings to life one of the great geniuses of the age.”

Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot by Elisabeth Elliot (£23.00)Publisher: London: Hodder & Stoughton — 1958Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a nick to the top edge of the upper panel. Price Clipped. Top edge of the boards sunned. Edges of the textblock heavily tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Photographic endpapers & blanks; Black & White Photographs; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. So wrote Jim Elliot at the age of twenty-two, sweating over Greek roots and patristics at Wheaton College.

Seven years later, writes his widow,he and four other young men… sat together on a strip of white sand on the Curaray River, deep in Ecuador’s rain forest, waiting for the arrival of a group of men whom they loved, but had never met — savage Stone Age killers, men known to all the world now as Aucas.

The circumstances of the death of these men are by now known throughout the world in one of the great missionary adventure stories of modern times. But this is the first account of the whole life of one of them — a life that, though hid with Christ in God , was in part revealed in some of the most poignant and moving spiritual writings of our time.

Using to the full these rich journals, his widow has selected the most powerful, revealing passages and woven round them the story of his life. Shadow of the Almighty is a tremendous biography of an adventurous life and is also exceptional devotional literature. Jim Elliot’s life and testament may well be counted among those truly great Christian writings that will endure.”

The author (previously an Art Teacher) looks for such pointers, in attempting to build up a ‘natural’ religion, based, as possible, on direct experiences, rather than the accepted guides from Church and Scripture; his aim is to approach religion through life, and not life through religion. Through the ‘dark wood’, a path must be chosen, so, the Quaker path is selected, finally approaching the Christian faith from the ‘experiential’ way, and not from unthinking acceptance of authority.”Notes: Size: 8¼" x 5¾". 116 pages. Paul and Conflict Resolution: An Exegetical Study of Paul's Apostolic Paradigm in 1 Corinthians 9 by Robinson Butarbutar (£21.50)Publisher: Paternoster — 2007Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9781842273159]Condition: Very Good.Description: From the cover: “This book is a literary and historical exegesis of Paul’s apostolic paradigm in 1 Corinthians 9. The author argues that chapter 9 is part and parcel of Paul’s unified arguments of 1 Corinthians 8-10, which are written to mediate in a dispute over food offered to idols. The questions of how the dispute emerged, how Paul arranges his arguments in the three chapters, and what role 1 Corinthians 9 has in the overall discourse are addressed carefully in the book. Moreover, the question of why Paul and his co-workers did not receive financial support from his audience, which was contrary to the practice of the other missionaries and the normal workforce of the time, and of why he uses such a practice as an example to be imitated by those insisting on their right to eat food offered to idols, are dealt with judiciously. Based on his exegesis of 1 Corinthians 9, the author furthermore attempts to see the relevance of 1 Corinthians 9 for dispute resolution today, taking the conflict within his own church as an example. .”Notes: Size: Trade Paperback (9¼" x 6"). One Front Across the World by Douglas Hyde (£19.50)Publisher: William Heinemann — 1955Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with slight soiling to both the panels. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “In 1951 a sensation was caused by a book written by a former news-editor of the Daily Worker who had renounced his Communism for the Roman Catholic faith. The book was Douglas Hyde’s I Believed and it became a best-seller all over the world.

Douglas Hyde recently visited the Far East and in his new book he tells of the invisible struggle which is being waged between Communism and Christianity for the soul of Asia. In the front line of Christian resistance are the missionaries, and Mr. Hyde begins his book with the story of Father Philip Crosbie and other Europeans captured in Korea, who endured the Death March to the Yalu River which has been described by Commissioner Lord of the Salvation Army and Philip Deane, the Observer correspondent. This gives the tone and temper of the Far Eastern situation today, and Douglas Hyde goes on to describe his own reactions to India, Pakistan, Burma, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, from all of which he carried away the overwhelming impression of a spiritual vacuum created wherever people have renounced their own religion and remain poised between Eastern tradition and Western political realism, between belief and unbelief.

Douglas Hyde combines the observant eye of the trained journalist with the moral vision of a man who has, after a long search, arrived at what he believes is the truth. One Front Across the World is full of vivid facts and details of life in war-scarred Korea; but the facts and details would make little sense had not Douglas Hyde set them so firmly in their place as part of a world-wide pattern.”

From the cover: “Crop circles have become a feature of the British landscape during the last few summers, but they are no recent phenomenon. They have appeared each summer for thousands of years, and the sites of their ancient precursors are to be found in most isolated parts of the British Isles.

In this astounding and revelatory book, Dr Meaden, a professional physicist and meteorologist with a lifelong interest in archaeology, makes the link between the crop circles and the mega-lithic stone circles to solve a mystery that has haunted generations of antiquarians and laypeople alike.

What was the purpose of the stone circles? Why were they built where they were? What inspired their strange carvings of spirals, cup-marks and cup-and-ring marks? Why did the Neolithic peoples construct round barrows as resting places for their honoured dead?

Through his understanding of the physical forces which create crop circles, the author has solved the riddle of the stones, revealing for the first time the nature of the cult which motivated the entire lives of our Stone Age forebears. He is able to explain the meaning of such mysterious monuments as Silbury Hill in Wiltshire and Newgrange in Ireland, and he unveils a religion of such power that its symbols permeated Neolithic society as did the symbol of the Cross in the early years of the Christian Church.

From the pages of this book the shadowy years of prehistory shine forth in a new light, giving us a totally unexpected insight into the lives of Stone Age people, their view of the world and natural forces and, above all, into the awesome, all-pervading presence which inspired them to unparalleled feats of engineering.

The Goddess of the Stones will startle the archaeological world and excite all those who are captivated by the mysteries of our ancient past. Illustrated with photographs in colour and black and white, and with numerous drawings, it is an outstanding breakthrough in our knowledge of prehistory.”
