Blessings in Disguise by Alec Guinness (£9.50)Publisher: Hamish Hamilton — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0241006813]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with short nicks to the head of the spine. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “My birth certificate registers me as Alec Guinness de Cuffe, born in Marylebone, London, 2nd April 1914; my father’s name is left a speculative blank. The mystery has never been solved, though Alec Guinness would later be the recipient of certain intriguing theories. But, in any case, Blessings in Disguise is not an autobiography which tells all, an exercise in egomania as purveyed by so many actors and actresses. What can be said, without the faintest chance of contradiction, is that it is one of the wittiest, most entertaining memoirs to come out of the theatre in many a long day.

Here are brilliant pen portraits of Ralph Richardson, Edith Evans, Sybil Thorndike and Lewis Casson, Tyrone Guthrie, and John Gielgud; and of two less well remembered but once greatly revered figures, Ernest Milton and Martita Hunt. Edith Sitwell presides at the Sesame Club and is reconciled to the Roman Catholic Church (Evelyn Waugh wore black and white dog-tooth tweeds, a red tie, and a boater from which streamed red and blue ribbons). Vivien Leigh exercises her charms on a susceptible admiral in North Africa. Ernest Hemingway is less than overwhelmed by Noel Coward. Lilian Baylis demonstrates her renowned commercial sense. Nellie Wallace sends a huge bunch of yellow roses to a sick boy (the boy was Alec Guinness, who was totally enchanted by her mixture of innuendo and wicked mime).

And here too is Alec Guinness himself, on his film career, on his religious beliefs, on his war experiences (the relevant chapter is entitled ‘Damage to the Allied Cause’ and one can see why), writing always with modesty, a perfect sense of timing, a lack of malice, and above all humour mixed with humanity. It is a remarkable, and hilarious, combination..”

Genealogy for Beginners by Arthur J. Willis (£9.50)Publisher: Phillimore — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0900592311]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, heavier so at the tips. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: 3rd, revised, edition. [First Edition: Ernest Benn, 1955] From the cover: “THIS IS A NEW EDITION OF A CLASSIC. Many books have been written for the would-be genealogist, but none has equalled the success of Mr. Willis’s Genealogy for Beginners. Since it was first published, this readable little guide has introduced more ancestry-tracers to the subject than any other. Now completely up-dated, revised and re-set, the book in your hand is the best buy for the beginner of today.

Tracing your own family history and gradually constructing your own, unique, pedigree is an absorbing hobby, a never-ending personal detective investigation. This book tells you exactly how to set about it; how to collect information from living relatives; how to make full use of all the clues and traditions you already have; how and where to find written records; how, with luck, to build up a complete pedigree back to the late Middle Ages.

The growth in interest in genealogy has been phenomenal in recent years; the Society of Genealogists of London having doubled its membership in a decade and some twenty vigorous regional societies having sprung up throughout Britain, mainly in the mid-seventies. Mr. Willis can claim credit for much of that growth through the influence of this book. In addition, he has made a big contribution to the wealth of published source material available to searchers for British records. The publishers will gladly supply details of his other books on the subject — and those of many other authors — and will be pleased to put new genealogists in touch with the secretaries of any of the societies referred to above.

Ancestry-tracing is fun; it brings history to life and it gives a greater sense of personal identity. Our ancestors cease to be a vague concept and become real people, part of each of them living still, in us, their descendants. They may have been ordinary, may have been blue-blooded or famous, but whatever they were the search itself is rewarding and the satisfaction of knowing is permanent and a proper source of pride.”

Instead of the usual method of working through the sources available to the family historian, Marilyn Yurdan has attempted to deal with the events in the ancestor’s life which actually led to these sources being compiled. Blessings in Disguise by Alec Guinness (£6.50)Publisher: Fontana/Collins — 1986Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0006371086]Condition: Very Good. Pages very gently age-tanned.
