Richard Simkin's Uniforms of the British Army: Infantry, Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers and Other Corps by W. Y. Carman (£31.00)Publisher: Exeter: Webb and Bower — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0863500315]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: 1st Foot Guards (Grenadier Guards), 1912. Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Colour Drawings;

From the cover: “Richard Simkin’s illustrations of British Army uniforms up to the First World War are well known both for their high quality and for their value to collectors, model-makers and military historians.

To follow his first volume of uniforms of the cavalry regiments, W. Y. Carman has now extended the collection to cover the infantry regiments, including the Gentlemen-at-Arms, the Royal Company of Archers (Scotland), the Foot Guards, the Infantry of the Line, the Royal Artillery, the Royal Engineers (including the Royal Military Artificers and the Sappers and Miners), the Army Service Corps.

Although Simkin’s illustrations are not available for all of the 109 infantry regiments before 1881, a brief outline of each regiment is given which includes changes of title extended to cover the Army of today so that the modern soldier may trace his ‘ancestors’. The text of uniform changes is in special sections, such as that of Highland and Lowland regiments, rifle corps, fusiliers and light infantry, while that on infantry is broken down to include musicians, pioneers and other groups.

Richard Simkin, born in 1850, was a soldier in a London Volunteer regiment before attending art schools in Kensington and Heatherley. He married in 1880 and lived in Aldershot for six years before moving to Herne Bay where he died in 1926, aged seventy-five.”

Spanish Fighters: An Oral History of Civil War and Exile by Neil MacMaster (£27.00)Publisher: New York: St. Martin's Press — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 031204738X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper now protected in a removable mylar sleeve. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “This book is based on extensive recorded interviews with two Spaniards who grew up in peasant villages of Asturias during the 1930s. Their account provides an unusual grassroots insight into the poverty and social tensions of local life which eventually led to civil war. The dramatic years of the war itself are followed by an account of the terrible experience of exile in French concentration camps after 1939, of their participation in the Resistance, the post-1945 opposition to the Franco regime and the eventual return to their home villages and a society transformed by decades of dictatorship. This stoical and often moving account of the experience of war and exile by two ordinary combatants provides a fascinating insight into the dynamics and long-term implications of the Spanish Civil War.”

Battle Honours of the British and Commonwealth Armies by Anthony Baker (£16.00)Publisher: Ian Allan — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0711016003]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Small scuff to the upper panel. Dust wrapper is from the Guild Publishing (Book Club) edition. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “This is a remarkable work of reference. It brings together into one comprehensive volume the story of the achievements of the British and Commonwealth armies over 300 years of service. It tells of and lists the battles fought, whether they were honoured or — equally important — whether they were not and are now largely forgotten, and which regiments were involved.

During the past 30 years the British Army has been much reduced in size and some old and famous regiments and many batteries of the Royal Artillery have ceased to exist. Most of the infantry regiments which are left have been amalgamated into vast amorphous ‘large’ regiments, all of which bear much the same list of amalgamated Battle Honours, whilst those Honours which their integral parts have won have been submerged. Soon individual regimental achievements will be lost other than to members of these regimental families.

This book sets out to ensure that this does not happen — that the Honours granted in the past, from Tangier’ in 1662 to ‘Falkland Islands’ in 1982, and the regiments that won them are not forgotten. In providing such information it will prove invaluable to military historians or anybody who has ever wondered about the lineage and honours of British and Commonwealth units.”

When the Whistle Blows: The Story of the Footballers' Battalion in the Great War by Andrew Riddoch & John Kemp (£10.50)Publisher: Sparkford: Haynes Publishing — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9781844256563]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Facsimiles; Chronological tables [1]; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “When the Whistle Blows is the first book to tell the story of the 17th Battalion The Middlesex Regiment — the Footballers’ Battalion — and their experiences on the pitch and in the trenches of the Great War.

Following the outbreak of war in August 1914, a heated debate took place about the continuation of professional football during a time of national crisis. In response to claims that footballers were not ‘doing their bit’, William Joynson-Hicks MP raised the Footballers’ Battalion in December 1914 with some 35 professional players enlisting at the inaugural meeting in Fulham Town Hall. Professional footballers, with connections to over 70 present-day League clubs, lost little time in following their lead, the Battalion being brought up to strength by amateur players, officials and football fans eager to serve alongside their favourite players.

Based on extensive original research, Andrew Riddoch and John Kemp draw on many previously unpublished letters, personal accounts and photographs to paint a vivid portrait of a remarkable battalion that fought in some of the fiercest battles of the Great War. The result is a book that is a significant addition to the literature of football and that of the Great War.”

Lady Into Cook by Katherine Curragh (£9.50)Publisher: Cressett Press — 1957Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Good. Boards a little rubbed at the extremities, notably so at the joints of the spine and boards. Leans slightly. Mildly bumped at head & tail of spine and corners.Description: From the introduction: “At all times amongst the uninhibited aristocracy — and at most times throughout leisured society in general — it has been fashionable to display an educated discrimination in the choice of Food, but it is I think peculiar to the present time that the practice of Cookery should have become as proper a subject for cultured conversation as politics, art, or contemporary scandal. It is of course largely the war which we must thank for this admirable phenomenon. The contriving of meals then became for everyone a matter of constant concern, and the simultaneous absence of domestic labour enabled our leisured class to get its feet in the kitchen door — a position from which it now seems unwilling to retreat.

But while cooking has thus gained immensely in prestige among our social and intellectual aristocracy, it seems lately to show signs of disappearing altogether from the numerically greater though less select circles of the population.

This is because of The Packet. In the last few years the shelves of our lesser grocers have become stocked with regiments of small boxes and tasteful packets whose contents — with the addition of a little tap water — will produce not only jellies and cold white shapes, but cakes, puddings, pies, tarts, cream, etc., which are claimed by their producers to be edible. And indeed, although it is perhaps too soon to judge of their eventual effects, many of these horrible mixtures do appear to cause no immediate illness. Thus it is happening that for every lady who experiences the pleasant metamorphosis into cook, at least ten potentially worthy cooks, seduced by The Packet, are being deprived of everything but the uninteresting if lady-like occupation of undoing dainty parcels and wetting the contents.”
