Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Charts; Graphs; Tables;

From the cover: “Contraceptive steroids have been in use for the last thirty years and today some sixty million women use them. The importance of ensuring that regulations governing the development and use of new contraceptive steroids are appropriate is self-evident.

This book records the proceedings of a symposium organized under the aegis of the World Health Organization’s Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction. Experts from a wide range of disciplines review the risks and benefits to women of contraceptive steroids, the predictive value of toxicological studies, and the role of controlled clinical trials.

The book ends with a set of guidelines on the toxicological and clinical assessment, and the post-registration surveillance, of steroidal contraceptive drugs.

This important and authoritative compilation will be of value to all those involved in the development, testing and prescription of these compounds, and to those concerned with regulating their use in the public domain.”

Spirit of the Somerset & Dorset Railway by Alan Hammond (£54.00)Publisher: Millstream Books — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0948975660]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper lightly pulled at the head of the upper panel otherwise a very well presented copy of this uncommon title. Description: A limited printing of 2500 copies of which this is number 252. Jacket illustration: Signalman Joe Crouchman, seen talking to driver Aubrey Pearce, and fireman Wally Moon enjoy the summer sunshine at Midsomer Norto on 3rd July 1961. From the cover: “This is the third in the series of photographic records of the Somerset & Dorset Railway by Alan Hammond. As with his previous books, the emphasis is on images of railwaymen and women working on the line. Most of the photographs come from private collections and provide a fascinating insight into the day-today running of this much-loved line.

There are anecdotes, too. Eight personal memories enhance the story, with many a tale from Bath, Wincanton, Sturminster Newton, Blandford and Branksome, among others. There is the tragic story of how a ganger fell to his death from a railway trolley at Kilver Street Viaduct, and the more amusing episode when lumps of coal lobbed off an engine for the crossing-keeper at Lamyatt Road broke down his front door. There is a personal memory of idyllic childhood visits to the signalbox at Midford and a wartime account of coming under fire from a German plane at Highbridge. The stories and photographs together provide a heart-warming recollection of this lost world.

The foreword has been written by the railway entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, a modern-day enthusiast and character to match those who worked on the old S&D.”

Abandoned Mansions of Ireland by Tarquin Blake (£42.00)Publisher: Wilton: The Collins Press — 2012Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9781848890619]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 3rd printing. [First Published: 2010] Illustrated by way of: Glossary; Vignette to the title page; Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “From the mid-eighteenth century Irish country houses flourished. Landowners generated easy income leasing land to tenants. As their wealth increased, so did the size of their country mansions. However, the Great Famine took its toll. Penniless tenants could not pay rent and estate owners found themselves in a precarious financial position. Later land reforms saw land ownership transferred directly to farmers. The houses, stripped of their land and income, fell into decline. During the War of Independence the mansions became an IRA target and many were deliberately burnt. For others, the increasing expense of maintenance made them unviable. Gradually, abandoned and forgotten, they sank into decay.

In 2008 Tarquin Blake found his first abandoned ‘Big House’ and began exploring the lost architecture of Ireland. Here he documents what is left of fifty mansion houses. Included are Mountpelier Lodge (the Dublin Hellfire Club), the birthplaces of Daniel O’Connell and the Duke of Wellington, and the one-time homes of Grace O’Malley and the Smithwicks of Kilkenny (brewers).

Brief histories of the houses and associated folklore tell of troubled times and private hardships. The inclusion of details from the 1911 Census offers a glimpse of the closing days of the aristocracy and their mansions. For example, the census records the owner of Lisheen House in Sligo as a Mr Owen Phibbs; occupation: Landed Proprietor; age 70. Mr Phibbs lived in the twenty-five rooms of his magnificent mansion house accompanied by a staff of five: a cook, parlour maid, housemaid, kitchen maid and laundress. By 1950 Lisheen House would be utterly abandoned. Today the fine carved stonework has almost disappeared under ivy.

The histories, together with beautiful photographs of the haunting ruins, explore a part of our heritage that is crumbling away before our eyes.”

Ace of Aces: M. St. J. Pattle - Top Scoring Allied Pilot of WWII by E. C. R. [Edgar Charles Richard] Baker (£34.00)Publisher: Somerton: Crecy Books — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 094755436X]Condition: Poor - in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, heavier at the head of the spine with a small nick, price-sticker scar to the upper panel. Title page removed, errata slip remains. Description: Publishing date unvailable due to the lack of the title page, dated from references. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “The nomination of the greatest fighter pilot of the Royal Air Force in the Second World War must always be a matter for argument. So many of the qualities which add up to greatness are not measurable — courage, leadership, endurance. The only concrete yardstick is the number of confirmed kills, the score of enemy aircraft shot down. It is on the latter account that M T St John Pattle can now be called the top-scoring Allied fighter pilot of World War II. But it is also the above-mentioned qualities which have placed ‘Pat’ Pattle, the boy from Butterworth, in the hall of legends. Yet, after the war Pattle’s achievements seemed destined never to be fully recognised — both because all records in the air campaign in Greece in 1941 were destroyed during the Allied retreat, and because the Greek campaign itself, viewed as an Allied defeat, was never perhaps given the acknowledgement it deserved. E C R Baker has pieced together Pattle’s amazing career with authoritative detail; this he has achieved through exhaustive research carried out in co-operation with the surviving pilots and other members of the squadrons with which Pattle fought. ‘Pat’ Pattle, once the unknown ace, was killed in the bitter fighting over Greece, and the records of his squadron never reached the Air Ministry files. But the author’s researches confirm that Pattle had shot down at least forty enemy planes in nine months of action before he was killed in April 1941. Furthermore, following the original publication of this book, the author was contacted by numerous people who knew, or were with, Pattle, during his career in the RAF, and provided further evidence of Pattle’s feats. On the basis of that evidence, Pattle’s confirmed kills can unquestionably be placed at between forty-four and sixty-four aircraft shot down. But this is more than a retelling of statistics. Here is the story of an outstanding fighter pilot and a great leader of men, the unknown ace of the Royal Air Force. Pattle was born in the Cape and raised on a lonely farm in Namibia. He discovered early in his life a keen desire within him to fly. He was rejected by the South African Air Force in 1933, but became more determined than ever to achieve his ambition. Pattle left South Africa to join the Royal Air Force before the war and achieved a success out of all proportion to expectations. He did much to help the hard-pressed troops on the ground. On 20 April 1941, a sick man, he led the remnants of his own and another squadron against an armada of over a hundred German aircraft. In the desperate fighting that followed, he shot down at least two enemy aircraft and then dived to the rescue of one of his pilots. The odds were too heavy and seconds later his aircraft, with Pattle slumped over the controls, crashed in the Bay of Eleusis.”

Dorset Pilgrims: The Story of West Country Pilgrims Who Went to New England in the 17th Century by Frank Thistlethwaite (£31.00)Publisher: London: Barrie & Jenkins — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0712620125]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a light crease to the top corner of the upper panel. Slight lean. Top edge of the text block tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white plates; Maps; Genealogical tables; Appendices [2];

From the cover: “This is a book that skilfully blends the minutiae of scholarly research with a powerful narrative. It tells the tale of a small group of English Puritans who, in the early 17th century, set sail to find a new life and a new Church in New England. Brought together by the recruiting powers and visionary drive of the famous Dorchester clergyman, John White, these pilgrims — many of them West Country neighbours and some connected by marriage — embarked on their dangerous voyage. On 20 March 1630 the first of them boarded the Mary and John and set sail across the Atlantic to found Dorchester on Massachusetts Bay.

Thistlethwaite vividly evokes the shock of the inhospitable climate as the pilgrims struggled to survive. Like a hive of bees, they did not stay long where they had first settled but swarmed a second time. Within five years the greater part of the community had uprooted themselves and trekked through the New England wilderness to settle on its ‘frontier’, the Connecticut River. Here, in a single plantation they still persisted as that same close-knit West Country community. Many had their homelots and field strips next to the same Dorset neighbours. The lifestyle too, with apple orchards and cider, Devon cattle rearing and dairying, hemp and flax, preserved a West Country flavour. But inevitably the old ways had to be adapted. The book ends with the great Indian Revolt of 1675, and in describing how this crisis was met, the author shows how the passage of four decades had turned the children of Dorset pilgrims into pioneers of America’s moving frontier.

It is an exciting story, skilfully pieced together from parish records, from wills and inventories, land grants and conveyances, court and church records and the lucky chance of an occasional diary or bundle of letters. Out of this fragmentary material, the author has convincingly recreated the experience of the pilgrims, bringing them to life across the centuries.”

St John's College Cambridge: A History by Edited by Peter Linehan (£31.00)Publisher: Woodbridge: The Boydell Press — 2011Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9781843836087]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Facsimiles; List of abbreviations; Frontispiece; Title page vignette; Appendices [6];

From the cover: “Within a generation of its foundation on the site of a decayed hospital at the behest of Lady Margaret Beaufort, England’s queen mother, the College of St John the Evangelist had established itself as one of the kingdoms foremost educational establishments: in the words of one notable contemporary, as ‘an university within it selfe’ indeed. And in the period thereafter — the years between 1511 and 1989, the period covered by the present volume -St John’s has continued to provide its fair share of Prime Ministers and other politicians, bishops, Nobel laureates, artists, writers, and sporting heroes, as well as irrigating the rich loam of the nation’s history in all sorts of other unexpected ways and places.

However, not until the organisation of the College’s archives and records in the present generation has it been possible to describe in sufficient detail the full story of that progress and adequately to trace the College’s development and achievements in recent centuries. The present history, the first since the early 1700s to provide a systematic and informed account of the subject, seeks to make good this historical defect. It is published as part of the celebration of the quincentenary of the College’s foundation.”

From the cover: “The group of talented young British designers, architects and artists who joined the Directorate of Camouflage at the beginning of World War 2 shared more in common than their professional skills; many were graduates of the Royal College of Art and some, at the end of the war, became tutors and professors of the College under its new Principal, Robin Darwin.

Basing the research for her book on Ministry of Defence records, Royal College of Art archives and help from the families of wartime ‘camoufleurs’, Henrietta Goodden explores the development of the extraordinary ideas which were to play such an important part in defeating the enemy in the air, on land and at sea. Among the names in wartime camouflage later to become famous in other walks of life were Basil Spence, architect, Oliver Messel, designer, Victor Stiebel, couturier, Edward Seago, painter, and Hugh Casson, architect and President of the Royal Academy of Arts. The copious images in this book, illustrating different methods and applications of camouflage, are much more than just military records and instructions and vividly evoke the atmosphere and conditions of wartime Britain.

The ingenious solutions and products of fertile, inventive and sometimes eccentric minds to confuse and deceive attackers, are the subject of this well-researched and illustrated book.”

The Canals of South and South East England by Charles Hadfield (£28.00)Publisher: Newton Abbot: David & Charles — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a very small nick to the foot of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [2]; Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Charles Hadfield’s The Canals of Southern England, published in 1955, has been out of print for some time. Since it was written, new records have been found and specialised studies made of several waterways within the area covered. It has therefore been replaced by two new volumes, The Canals of South West England already published, and this present book.

The Canals of South and South East England tells the story of all inland waterways south of the Thames and of Gloucester, and east of a line drawn roughly from Bristol to Christchurch. These include major canals like the Thames & Severn, Gloucester & Berkeley and Kennet & Avon, the Thames navigation itself, the many smaller canals and navigable rivers in the London area, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, and interesting schemes that came to nothing.

The old text has been thoroughly revised, and there is also much completely new information, especially on waterways about which separate books have not yet been written: the Stroudwater, Wilts and Berks, Grand Surrey, Croydon, Thames & Medway, Medway, Kentish Stour, and those of Hampshire.”

Who's Who of Cricketers: A Complete Who's Who of All Cricketers Who Have Played First-class Cricket in England with Full Career Records by Philip Bailey, Philip Thorn & Peter Wynne-Thomas (£18.50)Publisher: London: Guild Publishing — 1984Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a tear to the head of the spine, a small mark to the lower middle. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Every cricketer who has played in a first-class match in the British Isles, including the members of touring sides, is included in this book. Biographies and complete career figures are given for about 12,000 cricketers.

Only since 1976, when the Association of Cricket Statisticians produced a generally accepted list of first-class matches, has the book been possible, and since then the three authors, all leading Association members, have been engaged on the task.

Research has included the study of books, annuals, periodicals, newspapers (both British and overseas), birth and death registrations, church records, telephone directories and County scorebooks. The number of visits, letters and telephone calls made to archivists, cricket clubs, cricketers and cricketers’ relatives runs into several thousand.

The result is that the authors have collected a mass of information never before published, and at the same time have been able to correct errors which have occurred in other reference books.

The Who’s Who of Cricketers will remain a standard work and the essential authority on the lives and records of all first-class cricketers to play in the British Isles.”

Planned Beef Production by Stephen Williams; C. David Edgar; (£18.00)Publisher: Crosby Lockwood & Son — 1966Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Ex-library with few marks. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges with a rough nearly closed tear to the leading edge of the lower panel. Heavily faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “THE production of beef cattle is complex and is becoming increasingly so. Technical changes have been applied to the once simple matter of having herds of breeding cattle in some places and yards of fattening bullocks in others. Sometimes they were on the same farm, but often there was a considerable distance between them and this was bridged by the cattle dealer and the store market. New concepts of breeding by artificial insemination led to the replacement of some dual-purpose cattle by some others. The reds and the roans became black and white, or just black; and the buffs are now making an appearance. Physical and chemical methods of dehorning have jostled with genetic advances in polling. Competition between the churn stand and the calf pen in a period of falling milk prices led to early weaning in its various guises and to the greater use of milk substitutes and the earlier feeding of concentrates. Multiple suckling, carefully supervised by expensive labour, has led to mass suckling with labour charges spread over more cattle. More recently there have been interesting developments with barley fed and battery beef with forage flowing untouched from silo to stock, a trickle of concentrates being fed on the way. The time has come for an appraisal of the multitude of methods in beef production and the many differing ideas regarding suitable breeds down to the introduction of the Charolais.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5½". From the cover: “On a winter’s night in late 1942 there foundered in the mountains of Southern Norway one of the most vital — if not the most vital — missions of the Second World War. Thirty-four men in two gliders, towed by Halifax bombers, set out to sabotage the heavy water plant at Vemork and so cripple Germany’s efforts to be the first to produce an atomic bomb. Both gliders and one of the Halifaxes crashed. The crew of the bomber died instantly, as did the pilots and co-pilots of the gliders. But there were survivors from the gliders, members of the British 1st Airborne Division, Royal Engineers.

It was the fate of these Royal Engineers that turned this little-known raid, code-named Operation Freshman, into a tale of horror and murder that remained a mystery until British forces returned to Norway at the end of the war. The men died as a direct result of a top secret order just issued by Hitler and, then unknown to the British, aimed at curbing damaging commando raids.

Richard Wiggan tells how Operation Freshman was conceived and planned in a desperate race against time and of the difficulties to be overcome. His in-depth research into the operation included access to war crimes trial records not yet open to the general public. He presents a detailed account which includes Norwegian involvement in Freshman, both in the operation itself and in aiding the survivors. The book also describes the subsequent successful raid on Vemork by Special Operations Executive Norwegian agents.”

Great Sporting Moments by Ian Harrison (£16.50)Publisher: Cassell — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844032825]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Great Sporting Moments packs over ninety of the greatest moments from almost a century of sport into one incredible sporting year. This exciting book takes you month by month through the sporting calendar to relive the most dramatic, the most triumphant, the most poignant and the most significant sporting milestones in more than twenty different sports — January 1973, Gareth Edwards scores ‘the try of the century’; 1984, Torvill & Dean wow the world with their Bolero; April 1981, Aldaniti and Bob Champion win the Grand National; September 2001, the England football team beats Germany 5-1; November 2003, England wins the Rugby Union World Cup.

The moments in this book range from team triumphs (England’s near-mythical win in the 1966 Football World Cup and the counterpart Rugby Union victory in 2003) to personal achievements (Nadia Comaneci’s perfect 10) and from victories against the odds (Cassius Clay v Sonny Listen) to the sheer drama of last-minute finishes (Dennis Taylor’s black ball finish). Here you will find triumph, tears, human drama, national pride, and from the mosaic of individual moments, a picture emerges of the world’s great sporting events — the Olympic Games; the football, cricket and rugby union World Cups; the Grand National, the FA Cup, the Wimbledon Championships.

Great Sporting Moments is a book for sports aficionados and casual fans alike — a nostalgic reminder for those who simply want to relive the moments; packed with details and fascinating facts for those who want to know more about these famous events. Fred Perry was the last British player to win Wimbledon but who did he beat in the final? Why is the marathon such an odd length? Who played in the White Horse final and what was the score?”

Melody And The Lyric From Chaucer To The Cavaliers by John Murray Gibbon (£16.50)Publisher: J. M. Dent & Sons — 1930Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, heavily faded and now sealed in a mylar protector. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Previous owners' inscription to first blank. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “The English lyric up to Herrick’s day has a sequence of consonants and vowels which makes it peculiarly “singable”. Some of the lyrics of this period are known to have been written for music, and the melodies themselves have in certain cases been preserved. The hunt for others revealed to the author of this book so much valuable literary history not readily accessible, and threw so much new light upon the metres used, that he was urged by musical and literary friends to publish the results of his researches, on the ground that the work would have far-reaching effects on the study of the English lyric — a claim which the publishers, in offering this richly-documented book to the public, feel fully justified in supporting.”Notes: Size: 10" x 7¼". The Lost Photographs of Captain Scott: Unseen Photographs from the Legendary Antarctic Expedition by David M. Wilson (£16.50)Publisher: New York, Boston & London: Little, Brown & Company — 2011Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9780316178501]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Photographic endpapers and blanks; Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps;

From the cover: “The legend of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, symbol of fortitude and courage who perished with his fellow explorers on their return from the South Pole on March 29, 1912, is an enduring one, exalted, dismantled, and restored over the course of the past century.

Until now, the history of the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition has been pieced together from Scott’s own diaries and those of his companions, the sketches of “Uncle Bill” Wilson, and the celebrated photographs of Herbert Ponting. Yet for the final, fateful months of their journey, Scott also photographed this extraordinary scientific endeavour himself. For decades Scott’s photographs — breathtaking polar panoramas, views of geographical and geological formations, and shots of the activities of his team and their animals — have been lost and recovered, fought over, and neglected. Now, at long last, they are resurrected.

Trained by Ponting, and in the face of extreme climatic conditions and practical challenges at the dawn of photography, Scott achieved an iconic series of images remarkable for both their technical mastery and their poignancy, indelible records of the doomed journey. In this landmark book, the photographs are accurately attributed, catalogued, and published together for the first time: a new dimension to one of the last great expeditions of the Heroic Age of Arctic Exploration and a humbling testament to the men whose graves still lie unmarked in the vastness of the Great Alone.”

Period Gardens by Patrick Taylor (£16.00)Publisher: Pavilion — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1851454020]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Very slight fading to the spine of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “A scented garden walled with Tudor brick; an old garden, its pathways arched over with clipped lime trees; a pavilion of white and blue wood topped by a golden ball; an intricate geometric maze of yew and box; archways, avenues and tunnels of honeysuckle, laburnum and English oaks — these are the elements of gardens from the past that too often are allowed to decay and disappear. Period Gardens describes the history and painstaking restoration of a dozen classic gardens rescued from this fate, and illustrates them in their newly revealed splendour.

Patrick Taylor gives an account of each garden and its history; the practices and inspiration of its designer, the reasons for its form, and details of the plants and trees that were grown as well as of the follies, fountains and statuary that give every garden its distinct character. He describes the restoration of each in great detail, varying from gardens such as Claremont and Westbury Court, where precise historical records have been carefully followed by the National Trust, to estates such as Pitmedden and Hatfield, where a freer interpretation revives the spirit of the original. While the purpose of this book is chiefly to inspire, there is advice about the practicalities of restoration that will be relevant to any garden, regardless of size or age.

Period Gardens shows how gardens may be almost lost, and yet be restored to their original glory. In many cases they provide an appropriate setting for the historic houses that are part of every country’s cultural heritage; this is particularly the concern of the National Trust, which owns five of the gardens here described. The specially commissioned photographs taken by Eric Crichton capture and convey the beauty and detail of each of the gardens. This book is a tribute to the imagination of the original gardeners and to the commitment of the men and women who have brought these masterpieces back to life.”
