From the cover: “Frazetta is without question the master of Fantasy Art. He exploded all the old preconceptions of Fantasy as a pastoral realm of cute elves, sprites and wise wizards, and re-envisioned it as a brutal wilderness inhabited by virile, ruthless warriors hewn from pure muscle, and armour-clad amazons with astonishingly voluptuous bodies, locked in perpetual combat with horrific primeval monsters and demons.
Once Frazetta had wielded his paints Fantasy could never be the same again. Born in Brooklyn in 1928, he absorbed the colourful pulp adventures of Tarzan and Flash Gordon, and in the fifties he excited the next generation of Fantasy-lovers with his comics and illustrations for the seductive lady blood-sucker, Vampirella, and most fatuously Robert E. Howard’s hero, Conan The Barbarian. His work, with its high levels of testosterone, wicked humour and compositional skill, has been a profound influence on film-makers such as John Milius, Clint Eastwood and George Lucas. In the sixties Frazetta’s images became the poster art for psychedelic counterculture.
Frazetta was no political radical, but his art ripped apart the clean, ordered world of suburban America and replaced it with a gorgeously rendered wasteland of violence and sensuality.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by Betty Ballantine. From the cover: “To an observer looking down from the peak of Brimleigh Beacon early that Monday morning, the scene below might have resembled the aftermath of a battle. They swirled over fields dotted with motionless shapes, mingling here and there with the darker smoke of smouldering embers.
THE END OF THE SUMMER OF 69. THE END OF THE BIGGEST ROCK FESTIVAL YORKSHIRE HAS EVER SEEN. AND THE END OF A LIFE.
As the organisers clear up after the party, they find an abandoned sleeping bag containing the body of a young woman, brutally murdered. Detective Chief Inspector Stanley Chadwick, a hard-headed WWII veteran, is assigned to the case. Chadwick has no time for the youth of the day, disrespectful and caring nothing for the sacrifices of an older generation. But the victim was related to a local band, the up-and-coming Mad Hatters, and Chadwick finds himself drawn unwillingly into the psychedelic Sixties pop scene.
After a difficult summer, DCI Alan Banks is back home in the Yorkshire Dales. When he is called to investigate the murder of a journalist writing an article on the Mad Hatters, he discovers it is not the first time the ageing rock superstars have been brushed by tragedy. And Banks will have to go back a generation to discover exactly what kind of hornets’ nest has been stirred up.
Peter Robinson’s stunning new Chief inspector Banks novel is his richest and most compelling yet.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Black boards with Red titling to the Spine.
