French Aircraft 1939-42: Fighters, Bombers, Reconnaissance and Observation Types by Dominique Breffort (£151.00)Publisher: Paris: Histoire & Collections — 2011Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 2352501970]Condition: Near Fine. Slightest rubbing to the tips of the wrappers otherwise a very well presented copy of an uncommon title. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Drawings; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Contrary to what was long believed and asserted, French Armée de I’Air was not crushed on the first day of the German attack, on 10 May 1940. For aircraft, France did have — and a lot! — and in particular it did have pilots who fought, who even fought very bravely, especially if you take into account the equipment they were using, that subtle blend of out-of-date and therefore vulnerable machines and new, modern aircraft with all their teething troubles which not always corrected. This book, which is actually the reissue, very substantially increased, of volumes 7 and 8 of the Planes & Pilots series bearing the same title and published by Histoire & Collections in 2004-2005, provides a comprehensive overview of military aircraft of the crucial period in the history of the Armée de I’Air extending from the beginning of World War II to the dissolution of the aviation of the Vichy regime. From Amiot to Potez, all fighters, bombers, reconnaissance and observation planes used by the Armée de I’Air between 1939 and 1942, produced in France or purchased abroad, are presented by alphabetical order, supplemented by an overview presentation of the main prototypes built and flying before the end of hostilities but which circumstances prevented from being produced in series, even though this was planned and indeed sometimes already started.”

The Piercebridge Formula: A Dramatic New View of Roman History by Raymond Selkirk (£88.00)Publisher: Patrick Stephens — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0850596211]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine and slightly onto the panels of the dust wrapper. Upper board slightly dust-marked. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Though deceptively simple, the Piercebridge Formula will revolutionise our view of Roman Britain. Its implications are destined to influence archaeologists for many years to come. For what freelance pilot turned amateur archaeologist Raymond Selkirk has discovered is that the Roman Conquest of Britain was carried out by water transport and not by road as has been commonly supposed. His theory was proved at Piercebridge, on the River Tees, where, by a combination of brilliant aerial surveys and detective work on the ground, he found the archetypal water-supplied Roman site. For some time he had strongly suspected that waterways must be the answer, for how could ox-carts have travelled on Roman roads which often climbed gradients which would daunt a modern saloon car? Also, how could the oxen have carried any load at all when they would have needed all their strength merely to pull carts laden with fodder for themselves?

At Piercebridge it became clear that where a Roman road crosses a river, there is an excellent chance of finding a Roman site. This formula was then applied to other areas… and it worked! At one time the finding of an unknown site was a rarity but Selkirk and his team of enthusiasts produced remarkable results in a very short time. Yet the full effects of the Piercebridge Formula are only just starting to be felt, for what is true of Britain must logically apply to the whole Roman Empire. The prospects for further exploration are therefore tremendous and the author goes to great lengths to enlist the aid of his readers, both at home and abroad, in following up leads which will help to uncover further remains. Suspected sites are all named with exact locations and map references so that those with sufficient enthusiasm may continue this fascinating quest. The storm which this book will cause in archaeological circles has barely started, the search has only just begun.”

The Fleet in the First World War Volume 1: Operations of the Russian Fleet by Edited by N. B. Pavlovich (£86.00)Publisher: New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta & New York: Amerind Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd. — 1979Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper which is a little dulled at the panels and faded at the spine. Boards and spine dulled. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Publishing date unstated, dated from references. Translation of Flot v Pervoi Mirovoi Voine published by Voennoe Izdatel’stvo, Ministry of Defence, USSR, Moscow, 1964. Illustrated by way of: Maps; Tables; Fold-Out Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “Among the many works on the First World War there has been no comprehensive account of the Russian navy’s part in that epic clash of the great powers. This gap is now filled by the present volume, which takes its place as the authoritative record of the Russian fleet’s day-by-day contribution to the war at sea from 1914 through 1917, when the revolutionary Bolshevik government took Russia out of what it saw as a purely imperialistic confrontation.

The story of the tortuously slow growth of the tsarist navy is told against the background of war preparations by Germany, France and England. We learn that through the vision and persistence of a few leaders Russia’s posture both on land, at sea and in the air at the outbreak of the war could inspire a measure of confidence.

The deeds of the Russian navy are recounted on the basis of the three theatres where it operated: the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the White Sea and adjoining coastal waters. The sections under these three heads give a year-by-year account of the fighting at sea against the background of the general progress of hostilities, particularly on the land front. The account concludes with the overthrow of the Tsar, the brief transition of Bolshevik rule, and the upheaval these developments produced in the Russian navy, which played a not inconsiderable part in hastening the process.”

The Oil Engine Manual by D. S. D. [Denys Stephen Dodsley] Williams (£69.00)Publisher: Temple Press — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with nicks at the spine ends and a short, triangular, crease and tear to the foot of the upper panel. Tanning to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: 6th edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1939] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Graphs [1 Fold-Out]; Diagrams; Tables; Period Advertisements;

From the cover: “The first edition of this Manual appeared some 16 years ago and later editions were widely used as books of instruction during the Second World War. Considerable developments in engine design and a variety of applications took place during the period covered by the preceding five editions. In more recent years, however, the pace has, far from slackening, actually accelerated, so that the fundamental background of oil engine design has undergone considerable changes. The number of manufacturers has varied, whilst their power ranges have been made more extensive, even though the actual number of engine models has decreased somewhat through rationalization.

This new edition of “The Oil Engine” Manual has been very largely rewritten to cover changes occurring during the past five years. It is now fully up-to-date, as is only possible when the work is produced in the office of a journal dealing with the subject on a full time and highly specialized basis.

Chapters in the first part of the Manual give the background for engine design (of various forms) for all duties other than marine applications. In the second part, leading details are given of all the current makes of oil engine constructed in the United Kingdom, again for all purposes other than ship and boat duties. The third and final part is a technical appendix, which will be found useful, not only for those concerned with engine manufacture, but for those engaged in the use of such prime movers. Students also will find the whole book of permanent value to them in their work relating to this type of heat engine.”

British Experimental Jet Aircraft by Barrie Hygate (£66.00)Publisher: Hemel Hempstead: Argus Books — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1854860100]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Small ding to the foot of the upper board with a shallow crease to the bottom corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “The maiden flight of Gloster’s E28/39 experimental jet aircraft in May 1941 marked the arrival of a new age in British aviation.

In this comprehensive and unique book, Barrie Hygate traces the development of British jet aircraft, from the E28/39 to the British Aerospace EAP in 1986, through an in-depth examination of experimental or prototype jets of the period. He covers the forty-one experimentals which were built but failed to reach production, or which reached an advanced stage of construction. Produced in secrecy, with stringent funding, often utilising components borrowed from other types, these were the machines that opened new frontiers in flight research. Each in its own way reached into hitherto unknown realms of risk, often with tragic results, and they were to lead ultimately to the better-known Hunters, Scimitars, Victors, Vulcans, Lightnings, and Concorde.

In these pages, Barrie Hygate describes in detail each aircraft’s development history, construction and its power plant. He concludes each description with a 3-view, original Vn. scale drawing. Never before published in book form, these are the product of many years’ research and draughtsmanship.

British Experimental Jet Aircraft chronicles the story of this path breaking era and is an absolutory indispensable reference work for aviation enthusiasts everywhere.”

Handley Page Aircraft Since 1907 Revised by Derek N. James by C. H. [Christopher Henry] Barnes (£56.00)Publisher: London: Putnam — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851778038]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1976] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “First heard in aviation a few years before the 1914-18 war, the name of Handley Page became one to conjure with when strategic bombing of Rhineland armament factories began in 1917 as a counter-blow to the German submarine blockade of the British Isles. After the war an O/400 and a V/1500 were the first two aircraft to fly all the way from England to India, and soon afterwards Handley Page pioneered commercial air transport services across the English Channel and in China, India and South Africa.

A new generation of twin- and four-engined monoplane bombers — Hampden and Halifax — emerged to challenge Hitler’s ambition between 1935 and 1945, giving rise in turn to the Hastings and Hermes transports of the 1950s; finally the nuclear age produced the Victor transonic bomber, which remains in service as the RAF’s long-range flight refuelling tanker A new line of smaller civil transports began with the acquisition in 1948 of Miles Aircraft Ltd and from the Reading factory stemmed the very successful Dart-Herald.

This book contains photographs, three-view drawings and data of every type of Handley Page aircraft built and flown, as well as many historic project drawings not previously published, and completes the author’s trilogy, which already includes Bristol Aircraft since 1910 and Shorts Aircraft since 1900 in the series.”

The Puritan Gift: Triumph, Collapse and Revival of An American Dream by Kenneth Hopper & William Hopper (£53.00)Publisher: I. B. Tauris & Co. — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1850434190]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Where does the Protestant work ethic come from? And how did America achieve such dominance in management for so long?

The Puritan Gift traces the origins and characteristics of an American managerial culture which, over the course of three centuries, turned a handful of small colonies into the greatest economic and political power on earth. It argues that the energy, social mobility, competitiveness and capacity for innovation, all of which lie at the heart of that culture, have their origins in the discipline and ethos of America’s first wave of European immigrants: the Puritans. Drawing lessons from their own extensive experience, the authors warn that, as America distances itself from the core values which underlay its commercial and economic success during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it puts its own future prosperity and security at risk.

The book also explores how American managerial culture has spread throughout the world. In particular it examines the impact of the US occupation of Japan on the social and manufacturing mores of that country and explains how America’s inherited style of management interacted with Japanese traditions.

This is an original exploration of the dramatic and far-reaching consequences of the Puritans’ ‘gift’ to America — the ethos which produced the early success of America and what came to be known as the American dream.”

Japanese Aircraft 1910-41 by Robert C. Mikesh & Shorzoe Abe (£51.00)Publisher: London: Putnam Aeronautical Books — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0851778402]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a few small indentations toward the top of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Tables;

From the cover: “Japanese Aircraft 1910-1941 will almost certainly come to be regarded as one of the truly outstanding works of aviation history. In the preface the authors state ‘For the vast number of Japanese aeroplane types that were built during the period covered by this book, it is disappointing that more has not been written in English about them’.

As a result of massive research the authors have now corrected this shortcoming. The names Kawasaki, Mitsubishi, Nakajima and a few others are well known but this work includes descriptions of the products of large numbers of companies and organisations that are known only to a few people outside of Japan.

The aeroplanes covered here range from the single type produced by the Awazu Flight Research Studio, include as would be expected the proliferation of Aichis, Kawanishis, Kawasakis, Mitsubishis and Nakajimas, and ends in alphabetical order with the products from the Naval Air Arsenal at Yokosuka.

Including early privately-built aeroplanes and those produced under licence, this work covers nearly 400 types. Appendices include aircraft of the Pacific war, a comparison of calendars, a bibliography and a glossary.”

with the Carriers in Korea: The Fleet Air Arm Story 1950-1953 by John R. P. Lansdown (£44.00)Publisher: Crécy Publishing — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0947554645]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper front flap slightly creased otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Although within living memory of those who took part, and their families, the Korean war has been largely neglected in publishing. There have been only a small number of books available and these have tended to detail the actions of the British, Commonwealth and US Armies. The fact that the British and Commonwealth navies, and particularly the Fleet Air Arm, were heavily involved has been largely overlooked.

This imbalance has at last been redressed by an author who, as a Lt. Commander, served with the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) in Korea on board the aircraft carrier HMS Glory. In this book, John Lansdown has produced the definitive record of this era, including a historical perspective of the period leading up to the conflict and a full and detailed history of sea and air operations in South East Asia from 1950-1953. All Royal Navy and United States Navy ships involved in the conflict are mentioned, and all the carriers which saw action are detailed in the text. This vital work of reference is enlivened by a stunning photographic content and extracts from the Squadron Diaries and Line Books, covering every day that aircraft flew into battle. A unique and absorbing book.”

Based on Post Office Data Communication Courses, the subjects covered in the Handbook are those which we have found from several years’ teaching experience to be the ones needed by the average student. The book should be of value to systems analysts, systems programmers and systems engineers, although it should also be a good reference for management and newcomers to computing.

V-Bombers: Vulcan, Victor and Valiant - Britain's Airborne Nuclear Deterrent by Tim Laming (£33.00)Publisher: Patrick Stephens Limited — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852605294]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: “Vulcan, Victor and Valiant — three of the most distinctive and impressive aircraft ever to have been produced in Great Britain. Immensely capable, each of these bombers was designed with one objective in mind — to deliver nuclear bombs into the heart of the Soviet Union. Futuristic in appearance, they were developed less than five years after the end of the Second World War, when Britain was secretly preparing her first atomic weapons.

A huge fleet of V-bombers was maintained in top condition, ready to fly their deadly missions with little advance warning. Continual exercises ensured the crews were fully trained for a task which their very existence and readiness was intended to avoid. Had they gone to war, it would have been unlikely that Britain would have survived in a recognisable form by the time of their return. Their raison d’être was deterrence, and history has shown how successful this policy was. The full story is told in detail, including how and why the V-force was created, through to its demise.

Following the transfer of Britain’s nuclear deterrent from the RAF to the Royal Navy, the Vulcan and Victor remained in RAF service. Although, thankfully, neither type was ever called upon to perform its primary role, the Vulcan was at the forefront of Britain’s liberation of the Falkland Islands in 1982. A lone aircraft carried out the longest range bombing mission in history to disable the islands’ only runway. In the Gulf War of 1991 Victor tankers carried out countless refuelling missions throughout the conflict.

Today, relics of the V-force are scattered throughout the UK in the form of abandoned airfields, former bomb stores and missile sites, and a handful of aircraft which have survived as museum exhibits. Tim Laming is an experienced aviation writer and photographer with several books to his credit. He counts himself lucky to have flown as a crew member in many combat aircraft, from the Phantom and Harrier to the Jaguar, Lightning, Buccaneer and Hornet. He lives in Sheffield.”

Asian Cooking: Recipes from the Far East by Edited by Lydia Darbyshire (£23.50)Publisher: Colour Library Books — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1841001201]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: From the cover: “The cuisines of Southeast Asia have enjoyed a boom in recent years, with Thai cooking currently rating as the most popular ethnic cuisine worldwide. This new-found interest is hardly surprising given the vast geographical area encompassed, and therefore the immense wealth and diversity of cooking styles on offer.

Asian Cooking brings together dishes from Vietnam, where the cuisine is a subtle blend of Chinese, Thai and French cuisines, from Thailand and Korea, from the four major regions of China and from Japan. The result is an irresistible collection of ideas for cooking with rice and noodles, using fresh meat and fish, and blending herbs and spices to create the subtle flavours that dominate the Orient.

There is an informative section describing the few essential tools and utensils required, and explaining the basic techniques and cooking methods which can be used to bring out the best in a wide variety of raw ingredients. There is also a full glossary of ingredients together with suggestions for suitable alternatives.

With over 400 recipes this book offers a comprehensive overview of the cuisines featured, with recipes for special occasions, as well as one-pot wonders for one or two people. In each case the emphasis is on providing recipes for authentic, easily-prepared recipes for all occasions.”

Starting with the final year in which ‘pre-war’ civilian cars were made, albeit in small numbers, the book continues with a survey of cars, armoured cars and car-derived vehicles such as light and heavy utilities which were used by the Armed Forces in World War II, and many of which later found their way to ‘civvy street’.

The final part of the book deals with the first post-war models, many of which were put into production in the latter part of 1945. Most but not all of these were slightly modified pre-war types.”

Scientific Principles of Feeding Farm Live Stock: Proceedings of A Conference Held At Brighton, 11-13 November 1958 by Anon. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with slight fraying at the spine ends and corners, fading to the spine. Price Clipped. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Spotting to the blanks and pastedowns. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “This book provides the most up-to-date information that is available about the principles of feeding farm live stock. It will be of value as a standard reference book not only to research workers but to advisers and students.

After the Second World War the need for increased production of animal products, the development of agricultural chemistry and the growth of the feeding stuffs industry led to greater use of balanced rations for live stock. The proper balancing of these rations calls for a sound basis on which to’ evaluate and state the nutritional requirements of live stock, but most of the existing standards are based on research carried out half a century ago.

The principles of feeding farm live stock have lately been under review, and newer ideas have been put forward by research workers in different countries. Farmer & Stock-Breeder recently got the advisers, national and commercial, to talk over these matters with research workers and see whether any restatement of principles might be helpful to all concerned. The conference called for this purpose produced not only the many valuable papers in this book but the considerable amount of constructive discussion and suggestions recorded here.”

Charts of War: The Maps and Charts That Have Informed and Illustrated War At Sea by John Blake (£20.00)Publisher: London: Conway — 2006Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844860310]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pulled at the head of the upper panel with two small nicks toward the top corner. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Information is power, and in centuries past sea charts were guarded by both a ship’s navigator and the State, stretched on oak boards or rolled in leather cylindrical quivers, locked away. As the European nations began their territorial acquisition and contest in earnest, the information charts contained of harbour approaches, coastal landmarks and hazards, currents and tides, could give one side or another the advantage.

From the ships of small expeditionary fleets, which carried navigational charts, to the requirements of modern ships involved in combined operations, which need charts to include a whole range of information, John Blake has produced a fascinating, illustrated account of the role that charts have played in planning, preventing, conducting and recording war at sea. The selection not only includes charts depicting major battles and amphibious operations, but those drawn up for tactical and espionage purposes, for coastal defence and the positioning of forts along rivers and at the entrance to harbours.

Chapters run in chronological order, organized according to the overall political scene, but the main focus is on the development of chart making and surveying in relation to changing warfare techniques. Informative captions accompany each chart, setting them in historical context and providing illuminating details about the main protagonists and the chart makers and surveyors themselves. Taken from a range of international maritime archives, they include portolan charts of Spanish acquisitions in the New World; Francis Drake’s attack of Cadiz in 1587, known as ‘the singeing of the King of Spain’s beard’; the Dutch attack on Chatham in 1667 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War; a plan of Chesapeake Bay where British naval forces failed to relieve General Cornwallis during the American War of Independence; William Bligh’s chart of the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801; charts of the Battle of Jutland, one British, one German; and the operational chart drawn up before the D-Day landings at Omaha beach.”

Professional People by Roy Lewis; Angus Maude; (£19.50)Publisher: Phoenix House — 1952Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with tape-reinforced head and tail of the spine, on the reverse. Price Clipped. Leans. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Professional is a word bandied about. It has a high prestige value. But what is a profession? What is the hallmark of the professional man — or woman? Is journalism a profession equally with the practice of the law, for instance?

In this shrewdly probing book the authors of the highly praised The English Middle Classes have sought answers to this kind of question. They have discovered why, although the numbers and apparent power of professional people are greater than ever before, many of them feel unhappy at their prospects. What is to be their future social status? Will most become salaried State servants, with no real guarantee of professional freedom? Would that matter? If so, how can they prevent it? These are problems posed, and discussed at length.

But it is not intended only for the professional reader although he is, of course, most directly concerned. Like The English Middle Classes it is a witty social history of our time. With humour and humanity, the authors have related their findings to the whole structure of our society. They debate, for instance, among many aspects of the survey, ‘The State as client’,’ Professional people in business’, ‘The impact of nationalization’, ‘The disappearing clergy’, ‘The “socialized” professions’. They warn readers about certain training methods and the tendency for professional people to hand over direction of their affairs to non-professional administrators. They criticize the ignorance prevailing in most professions about the affairs and problems of the others. Particularly valuable to parents and students are the summaries of training costs, and financial prospects, and the discussion of the relative advantages of private practice and public employment.

The authors of The English Middle Classes have here produced a similarly lively and profound book. In original research they have amassed a corpus of knowledge, especially on the development of professions since the ‘20’s, which was not available before. Their conclusions prove to be of some moment to the community, as well as the professions. Acutely reasoned, provocative, their book will be welcome to all observers of the social scene.”

Who's Who of Cricketers: A Complete Who's Who of All Cricketers Who Have Played First-class Cricket in England with Full Career Records by Philip Bailey, Philip Thorn & Peter Wynne-Thomas (£18.50)Publisher: London: Guild Publishing — 1984Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a tear to the head of the spine, a small mark to the lower middle. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Every cricketer who has played in a first-class match in the British Isles, including the members of touring sides, is included in this book. Biographies and complete career figures are given for about 12,000 cricketers.

Only since 1976, when the Association of Cricket Statisticians produced a generally accepted list of first-class matches, has the book been possible, and since then the three authors, all leading Association members, have been engaged on the task.

Research has included the study of books, annuals, periodicals, newspapers (both British and overseas), birth and death registrations, church records, telephone directories and County scorebooks. The number of visits, letters and telephone calls made to archivists, cricket clubs, cricketers and cricketers’ relatives runs into several thousand.

The result is that the authors have collected a mass of information never before published, and at the same time have been able to correct errors which have occurred in other reference books.

The Who’s Who of Cricketers will remain a standard work and the essential authority on the lives and records of all first-class cricketers to play in the British Isles.”

The Buddhist Writings of Lafcadio Hearn by Edited by Kenneth Rexroth (£18.00)Publisher: Wildwood House — 1981Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0704504219]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently faded at the spine with light reading creases. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: First in this edition. [First: Houghton Mifflin, 1977] From the cover: “Lafcadio Hearn was born on the Greek island of Leucadia in 1850. After a career in journalism in the United States, Hearn travelled to Japan in 1890 to write articles about Japanese life for Harper’s Magazine. He remained there for the rest of his life, taking a Japanese wife (by whom he had three sons and a daughter) and assuming Japanese citizenship in 1895. He died in 1904, and was buried after Buddhist ceremonies in Zoshigaya cemetery in northern Tokyo. This collection of his writings on Buddhism was taken from the bulk of his writings by Kenneth Rexroth. The organization of the selections reflects Hearn’s chronological progress from a rendering of the simple tales and stories illustrative of the common folk’s beliefs in Buddhism to the more abstract philosophic doctrines of the Mahayana Buddhist sects in Japan. Of the many writers who have commented upon Buddhism in Japan, none has stood the test of time so well as Lafcadio Hearn.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). However, laid in a type-written mss. from Markham alongside a hand-written note signed Sally with further references to this and other works. Contains: Facsimiles; Black & white plates; Maps; Genealogical tables; Chapter headpieces; Appendix;

From the cover: “Basing her book on John Loveday’s extensive diaries and correspondence, Sarah Markham (herself a Loveday) has produced both a compulsively readable portrait of a man of intelligent interests in eighteenth-century England and a mine of marvellous detail — from the eyewitness account of the arrival in Manchester of the Young Pretender and his army to John Loveday’s note of the cost of removing 12,550 snails from the garden at Caver-sham. There are delightful vignettes of university life at Oxford (John Loveday was an undergraduate at Magdalen), together with important new material on the antiquary Thomas Hearne and illuminating glimpses of other well-known scholars. There is, too, the additional bonus that John Loveday, a passionate sightseer, listed the paintings and works of art that he saw in country houses and other buildings on his tours — which took him (principally in the 17305) throughout the British Isles and once, in 1737, to the Low Countries. These lists have been included in a 75-page Appendix.”

Spirit of Asia by Michael Macintyre (£16.50)Publisher: London: British Broadcasting Corporation — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “South-East Asia is all too familiar as a battleground, but rarely has there been any intimation that the people caught up in the fighting were heirs to a splendid and ancient cultural tradition which produced many of the greatest artistic achievements of all time, and which continues to this day with remarkable vigour. To Asians, art is a natural part of daily life, an aspect of religious devotion, whether Hindu as in Ball, or Buddhist as in Burma and Thailand,

The photographs in this book, all reproduced in colour, were taken between July 1976 and May 1979, during preparation of the BBC Television series of documentary films Spirit of Asia. Like the films, they reflect the author’s interest in the artistic achievements and cultural life of the countries visited -from the magnificent temples of Angkor in Cambodia or Borobudur in Java, to the vivid and exciting dance-drama of Ball, the old and new forms of music and dance in Thailand, the water festivals of Burma, the great epic poems of India, and the effigies and rituals of animist tribes who still practise their ancient religion in remote corners of the Indonesian archipelago.”

Farmhouse Cookery by Laura Mason (£16.00)Publisher: London: National Trust Enterprises Limited — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 070780339X]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a snag at the head of the spine.Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “This book celebrates two things: the tradition of farmhouse cookery, and the link between landscape and food, especially as it is experienced through food produced by the tenants of National Trust properties. The Trust is more than aristocratic houses, it manages farmland scattered across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The model farm at Wimpole in East Anglia, the little fields of the Cornish coast, the deer-parks of the Welsh Marches, the mountains of Snowdonia and the Lake District fells have one thing in common, which is that they have been shaped over the centuries by food production.”

A Manual of Clayshooting by Chris Cradock (£15.50)Publisher: London: B. T. Batsford Ltd. — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0713453087]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the reverse of the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 2nd printing, [First Published: 1983] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs [90]; Diagrams [26];

From the cover: “Writing from a wealth of experience and a position of authority, Chris Cradock has produced a manual of techniques and hardware in clayshooting, comprehensive in scope and meticulous in detail. He has been involved with the sport for 60 years, and there are few aspects of its application both in Europe and the United States with which he is not familiar.

The book deals initially with modern shotguns and cartridges and the specifications of both for the various disciplines. There is then information on the try-gun, fitting and stock alterations. Buying a gun, suitable clothing and accessories are then discussed before the book covers the basics of the sport such as safety, stance and style. Shooting the various disciplines forms the basis of the next chapter. Much more general information is given in subsequent sections which deal with refereeing, shooting clubs, trap operation and control, coaching and maintenance. There is, finally, a chapter on the sport’s future.

In total, Chris Cradock has produced a work, both informative and readable, which will quickly establish itself as the reference manual for all those with an active interest in sport.”

Did You Really Shoot the Television?: A Family Fable by Max Hastings (£15.50)Publisher: HarperPress — 2010Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0007271719]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with the expected associated chafing to the dust wrapper.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Max Hastings’s account of his family’s tumultuous 20th century experiences embraces the worlds of fashion and newspapers, theatre and TV, pioneering in Africa and even — his father’s most exotic 1960 stunt — being cast away on a desert island in the Indian Ocean. The author is the son of broadcaster and adventurer Macdonald Hastings and journalist and gardening writer Anne Scott-James. One of his grandfathers was a literary editor while the other wrote plays and essays, and penned an enchanting memoir of his own Victorian childhood. His great-uncle was an African hunter who wrote poetry and became one of Max’s heroes. The author tells a richly picaresque story, featuring guest appearances by a host of celebrities from Thomas Hardy and Joseph Conrad to John Betjeman and Osbert Lancaster, who became Anne Scott-James’s third husband. ‘All families are dysfunctional’, Anne asserted impenitently to Max, but the Hastingses managed to be more dysfunctional than most. His father roamed the world for newspapers and as a presenter for BBC TV’s legendary Tonight programme, while his mother edited ‘Harper’s Bazaar’, became a famous columnist and wrote best-selling gardening books. Here, the author brings together this remarkable cast of forebears, ‘a tribe of eccentrics’, as he himself characterises them. By turns moving, dramatic and comic, the book portrays Max’s own childhood fraught with rows and explosions, in which the sudden death of a television set was only one highlight. His story will make a lot of people laugh and perhaps a few cry. It helps to explain why Max Hastings, whose family has produced more than eighty books over three generations, felt bound to follow their path of high adventure and popular journalism.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The Agony & the Ecstasy: Stephen Roche's World of Cycling by Stephen Roche with David Walsh (£15.50)Publisher: Stanley Paul — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0091736846]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper heavily tanned at the join of the rear panel. Leans slightly. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: Stephen Roche during the 1987 Tour de France. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “On the morning after Stephen Roche became cycling champion of the world, a French newspaper wrote: We sought a successor to Bernard Hinault but, instead, we found a new Eddy Merckx. In winning the Giro d’ltalia, Tour de France and World Championship in 1987, Roche entered the Merckx class as only the second cyclist to win the sport’s three great prizes in the same season. The achievement will ensure a permanent place for Roche in cycling’s heroic history — but what the history books will not record are the struggles, conflicts, sufferings and satisfaction that lay behind the dedicated Irishman’s great victories.

The Agony & the Ecstasy is the story of the making of a champion, from his boyhood on the Dublin streets where his passion for cycling was born and fostered by his father, through the gruelling years of trying to prove he had the talent everyone said he had. The book follows Roche’s growth from home-town Dublin boy into a young European, famous in every city where cycling is a major sport, and the astonishing series of wins in 1987 that were to make him a sporting legend. The Agony & the Ecstasy takes us behind the scenes of triumph and into the mysterious world of cycling to show us what life for top professionals is really like: the roads, the races and the riders themselves — how they live and train; the battles with the elements on the great marathons; the crowds and their role in morale; the dangers of the sport, and the elation or despair when the finish line is reached.

Stephen Roche, one of the most likeable world champions in any sport, is articulate, perceptive and often controversial. Together with journalist David Walsh he has produced a fascinating, thought-provoking book about his own route to the summit, and an illuminating in-depth study of his sport.”

From the cover: “As a boy he had one ambition, to be a professional footballer and to play for England. He achieved not only this boyhood ambition but the footballer’s dream and the final accolade when England won the World Cup at Wembley on July 30th, 1966. From the coal-mining village of Ashington to becoming one of the greatest forwards England has ever produced has been a long, hard road and the journey makes a deeply compelling story. He rose to fame on the wave of sentiment which swept Europe following the tragic air disaster at Munich in 1958… a disaster which decimated the Manchester United team which had been so carefully moulded by Matt Busby. Since then Bobby has never faltered. He tells, with the help of Neil Burden-Smith, of his life, thoughts, of Manchester United, of three World Cups and what it was like to wear England’s white shirt and play with and against some of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen. He also describes in detail those feverish weeks last summer when the World Cup competition gripped the hearts and imaginations of people all over the world.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾". Illuminated Manuscripts by Janice Anderson (£14.00)Publisher: Todtri — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1577171551]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the dust wrapper a little rubbed otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Illuminated manuscripts are usually strikingly beautiful, numbering amongst the most glorious works of art created during the Middle Ages. The finest were intended as religious texts and were lovingly and reverently produced by scholar monks and nuns in monasteries and convents all over Europe.

These manuscripts — or codices as they are more correctly called — were all written by hand. It was a slow, painstaking business which began with the preparation of the papyrus or animal skin, followed by the inscription of the text, the decoration or embellishment and, finally, the gathering and binding together of the material into book form.

No-one really knows when the art of illuminating manuscripts began. But, as with so many other innovations, the ancient Egyptians were of influence and left many beautiful and skilfully crafted drawings and scrolls, including The Book of the Dead, customarily interred with a person who had died. The Romans too were believed to have produced their own manuscripts, as early as the fifth century AD.

But the true flowering of the illuminated manuscript as an art form did not really begin until the start of the Middle Ages. Most of the work, however, was not new writing. Rather it was the copying of Biblical texts. In fact there was so much religion involved that it has been said that without the codex to spread the word, Christianity would probably never have become more than a minor Middle Eastern sect.”

Magic Worlds Of Fantasy: Dorle Lindner; Oscar Forel; Hsueh Shao-Tang; Ariane; by David Douglas Duncan (£14.00)Publisher: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0151551022]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges.Description: From the cover: “This book reveals the work of four remarkable amateur artists whose common trait is fantasy. One is an English housewife, born in wartime Berlin, who engraves images of another world which she visits in outer space; one is a Swiss psychiatrist who photographs abstract art found in tree bark; one is a Chinese chef who fled Peking ahead of the Communists and now creates his own Garden of Eden from bits of postage stamps; and one is a Belgian baroness who focuses her colour camera on the secret face of life itself — the ultimate fantasy — discovered in her forest-garden. Fantasy is prefaced by an eight-page selection of exuberant (and exclusive) “Souvenirs of a Magic World” given to the author by Pablo Picasso as tokens of his friendship. They richly illustrate the veteran artist’s joie de vivre when confronting the challenge of his own imagination: he voiced a concern, shared by Renoir, over the risk of crushing, through conformity, those elusive and often fragile fantasies seen by children — probably the greatest dreamers of all. Photographer-editor David Douglas Duncan has brought master craftsmanship to the expanding realm of fantasy hobbies, now discovered everywhere behind today’s life of increasing leisure and holiday weekends. He produced this book on presses of Imprimeries Reunies, Lausanne, among the most renowned of all Swiss printers.”Notes: Size: 10¼" x 8".
