Chinese Pottery and Porcelain: From Prehistory to the Present by S. J. Vainker (£49.00)Publisher: London: British Museum Press — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0714114480]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a vertical crease to the spint. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Jacket illustration: Porcelain dish decorated with a white dragon, cobalt blue glaze. Yuan dynasty, mid-14th century / White porcelain phoenix-head ewer, green-tinged glaze. 10th-11nth century AD. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs [80]; Colour Photographs [100]; Black & White Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: “Chinese Pottery and Porcelain is a comprehensive survey of the development of ceramics from the Neolithic period to the present day. Assessing the roles pottery has played in each dynasty throughout the history of China, the author also discusses its enormous impact on the ceramic industries of the rest of the world, where Chinese porcelain has been admired and collected for centuries.

From the earliest earthenwares to the exotic burial figures of the Tang, from the classic forms and subtle glazes of the Song to the famous porcelains created especially for export or imperial tastes, the book draws upon the extensive collections of the British Museum for lavish illustration.

The author considers the purposes for which the ceramics of each period were made, how their production was organised, and what effect local conditions might have had on their final forms. Incorporating contemporary commentaries, recent archaeological evidence from kiln sites and the most up-to-date scientific analysis, the book provides a valuable new account of China’s ceramic history.”

From the cover: “Korean music is one of the most splendid and distinctive of all the great East Asian arts. Varied in form and instrumentation, rich in texture and tone-colour, sophisticated in rhythm and mood, it is still little known in the West, though it is now attracting increasing attention. Keith Pratt, one of the few British scholars to have made an extensive study of it, gives an account of its development over the past fifteen hundred years. He explains the social importance of music and dance in both traditional and modern Korea, and discusses their links with Chinese music and their individual characteristics. At the core of his book is a unique collection of pictures and drawings showing the representation of music in Korean art. The 142 colour plates, many of them reproducing Korean works for the first time, constitute a remarkable survey of literati and folk art traditions. There are examples of painting, sculpture, metalwork, pottery and wood-carving.”

Prehistoric Northumberland by Stan Beckensall (£18.00)Publisher: Tempus — 2003Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0752425439]Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Chronological Tables; Colour Photographs; Diagrams; Maps;

From the cover: “Stan Beckensall’s exploration of the prehistoric landscape of Northumberland through field-walking, aerial photography, excavation and research has enabled him to pull together the many strands that form the fabric of this new study.

It is a selective account of the way in which the landscape has been used since hunter-gatherers roamed the wilderness, through the great changes brought about by farming, the erection of monuments, burials, settlements and defences. The study area lies largely to the north of Hadrian’s Wall, which cuts a swathe across much older sites.

Using the material evidence, Stan explains how tools, weapons, pottery and jewellery help to build up a picture of life in prehistoric Northumberland.”

Bristol at Work by John Penny (£14.50)Publisher: Derby: The Breedon Books Publishing Company — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1859833551]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Small ding to the centre of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Facsimiles;

From the cover: “Bristol’s working life — the foundation of the economy of the city — has never before been the subject of a detailed, highly illustrated history. John Penny’s fascinating account of this vital aspect of the city’s past uses a remarkable selection of rare photographs and other illustrations to record the variety of businesses, trades, industries and services that generated Bristol’s wealth and gave a livelihood to its people. Although dealing with the origins of most of Bristol’s traditional industries, the starting point is really the mid-18th century when a number of concerns were established that flourished locally until the dawn of third millennium. He chronicles the rise and fall of businesses, processes and products that once fuelled the economy of a great city. Chapters are devoted to each of the main types of employment, within which are concise histories of the city’s most important companies and undertakings.

Over the centuries Bristol has established itself as a centre for industries as diverse as tobacco, chocolate, chemicals, brick-making, pottery, ship-building, motorcycles, publishing, banking, insurance, aviation and brewing. Throughout this time the city functioned as one of the foremost ports in the country. Conditions and processes in these trades and industries are described in vivid detail, and the author recalls the generations of Bristolians who spent their lives working in the city. Many readers will be surprised to learn of the huge variety of work carried out locally over the last 150 years and will be reminded of just how many well-known local firms have disappeared within their lifetimes. John Penny’s revealing, thoroughly researched and lively account will be essential reading for everyone who enjoys Bristol’s history.”

A History of Greece to the Death of Alexander the Great by J. B. Bury; Rusell Meiggs; (£14.00)Publisher: MacMillan — 1977Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0333154932]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Notably rubbed at the outside edges of the cover and spine with fading to both wrappers. Leans. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint of the 4th Edition. [First: 1900] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “The first edition of Bury’s famous book was published in 1900, on the eve of Sir Arthur Evans’s dramatic excavations at Cnossus. In the second edition (1913) Bury rewrote the first chapter in the light of the evidence from Crete. In the third edition (1951), prepared by Russell Meiggs, the progress of archaeology again demanded a rewriting of much of the first chapter, and changes were made in other chapters. By the early 1970s, however, so much new material had accumulated that it was decided to prepare a fourth edition. The publishers are fortunate to have been able to call again on Russell Meiggs. This revision (1975) is more complete than the last. However, although Bury’s text has been widely changed in the light of new work and the further sifting of evidence, great care has been taken to preserve the basic character of the original; in particular, no change has been made in the scale and emphasis of Bury’s History. The revised text is presented in a modern format. The original maps have been redrawn and new ones added, with the inclusion of a fold-out map at the end of the book. The illustrations have been revised and improved and the section of notes has been enlarged, with the addition of useful bibliographies.”Notes: Size: 9¾" x 7¼". 577 pages. Country Crafts Today by J. E. Manners (£12.50)Publisher: Country & Gardeners Book Society — 1974Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Country Crafts Today is a comprehensive guide to the arts and trades which flourished in past times. It is also an important record, in words and pictures, of present-day craftsmen, their tools and skills. Mr Manners has produced a vivid portrait of village life and the occupations which were an integral part of the daily round. He covers those crafts which are fast dying-out, such as coopering, hedge laying, basketry and hand-made footwear, and includes those, like thatching, farriery and saddlery, which seem assured of a secure future. He sees a glimmer of hope for today’s craftsmen in that many people, tired of mass-produced goods, are demanding hand-made articles, from local pottery to wrought-iron work. Oak-bark tanning, cricket-bat making, charcoal burning, falconry, furniture and flint knapping, even dewponds, are described in this welcome addition to any country lover’s library. Country Crafts Today is a fascinating study, attractive to the eye, to be dipped irito time and again as a basic work of reference.”Notes: Jacket designed by John Manners. Size: 8½" x 6". Infantilia: The Archaeology of the Nursery by Arnold Haskell & Min Lewis (£12.50)Publisher: London: Dennis Dobson — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0234776781]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heavier tanning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “It is rare to find material assembled for the first time between the covers of a book that deals with objects so familiar that we are no longer aware of them. Infantilia is such a book. It tells in drawings and text the history of perambulators, feeding bottles and rattles in a manner that is of interest to the collector of increasingly rare and often beautiful objects, to the sociologist and to the pram-pushing mum and dad in the street.

It is amazing that no such study has previously appeared and its experienced authors have made it lively, personal and scholarly with illustrations of 125 different objects.

When was the first pram made? Can you date a vintage pram? Did you realise that they were collector’s pieces? Would you recognise a blue and white willow pattern feeding bottle of 150 years ago when even the pottery that made it has no record? Did you know that the feeding bottle has a 4,000-year-old history? In no book on silver is there a section on rattles… did you realise that they were made by the finest craftsmen of the day and that they are the oldest toys in the world?

This book opens up a new field of study, the archaeology of the nursery, a fascination for anyone who has ever been pushed in a pram.”

From the cover: “Collecting is a passion that can become a way of life. The lure of the chase, the search for the elusive treasure, the fascination of knowing almost, but not quite, everything about some out-of-the-ordinary subject are what makes a collector’s adrenalin surge.

Collectors thrive most of all on the teasing certainty that fortunes can be made out of their hobbies and that around the next corner they could find the one thing that will make their collection complete and unique.

This book contains the stories of many fascinating and successful collectors. They are men and women of all ages and from all walks of life who have been bitten by the collecting bug. Their specialities range from old bank notes to cigarette lighters, from dolls to picture postcards.

From their own experience they give first hand tips on collecting including how to start, where to go and, most interesting of all for the would be collector, what to start specialising in now so that your hobby can be turned into money. The astute collector picks an area of the market that is unexploited and develops it. Two young men who tell their collecting story in the book introduced the words ‘street jewellery’ to the Oxford English Dictionary because that was what they called the enamel signs, manhole covers and street direction boards which they began to collect only a few years ago. Street jewellery is now a large and thriving area for other collectors.

Everything and anything can be collected from 18th century prints to today’s throwaway beer cans. In this book you learn how to build up your collection and also how to add an unexpected pleasure to your life for collecting can not only be a cure for boredom and the blues but it carries with it the very real possibility of turning a modest outlay of money into a considerable nest egg.

The sky is the limit for the successful collector. Read how it can be done..”

Period Pastimes: A Practical Guide to Four Centuries of Decorative Crafts by Felice Hodges (£10.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297796313]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little wrinkled at the spine ends. Leans slightly.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Peaceful afternoons engaged in a little gentle embroidery or painting with, as a pleasant distraction, the exchange of idle gossip, is the image conjured by the domestic life of a lady of leisure in.times past. Many hours were passed working patiently on all manner of household articles and costume accessories, for their successful execution was a mark of a woman’s accomplishment. Such days are long gone, but many pieces of exquisite handiwork remain, treasured as family heirlooms and used as models in the current resurgence of interest in period crafts.

Period Pastimes combines an intriguing examination of four hundred years of domestic industry with practical instruction on how to make modern-day heirlooms: finely painted chairs, delicate paper filigree pictures, striking silhouette greeting cards, brightly coloured rugs for a child’s bedroom, trays decorated with pressed leaves and flowers.

Dividing the book into four sections — Paintwork, Paperwork, Needlework and Fancy Work — Felice Hodges devotes each to specific materials and skills. Paintwork relates in engrossing detail how materials as diverse as paper, velvet and glass were sumptuously decorated, finishing with a description of the prolific growth of painted and stencilled furniture that is so popular today. Paperwork looks at the equally varied applications of paper through the centuries, from intricate filigree boxes to colourful and practical scrap screens. Needlework presents the rich array of sewn and embroidered objects — samplers, beadwork boxes, giant multicoloured quilts — which were created lovingly by both women and girls. Finally, in Fancy Work, the many attractive uses of materials such as feathers, shells and pressed flowers are detailed, proving how varied — if sometimes eccentric — materials and techniques could be.

Each craft is set in its period context, with vivid, meticulously researched and often amusing descriptions of both the pieces and the characters who made them. Practical projects in every section are based on period motifs and colour schemes. Techniques and methods are explained with the help of clear, step-by-step diagrams. Materials required — all of which are readily available — are detailed in a list of suppliers. For all those interested in period crafts, this rich mixture will prove a captivating source of reference and inspiration.”

Decorating With Dried Flowers: Techniques, Equipment and Ideas for Arrangements, Posie and Festive Decorations by Pamela Westland (£9.50)Publisher: Apple Press — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1850763046]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Dried flowers, everlasting materials that can be used again and again in a host of varied ways to brighten the home, are the ideal decorating medium. The beauty of a well-stocked garden can be captured and enjoyed all year round by mastering the simple techniques of air drying, desiccant drying, and preserving in glycerine — you can even use a microwave to dry flowers. Detailed instructions and photographs guide the reader through these techniques, and special tables list which plants respond best to which methods and how long the drying and preserving processes take. Since dried flower decorations are longlasting, it is particularly important to provide them with a solid basis, and the various stem-holding and fixing materials available are itemized, with advice on how to prepare a wide range of containers for different decorations.

Successful flower designs do not rely on these mechanics alone; colour is the most important factor and the author discusses how to use it to various effect — the attraction of opposing colours, such as blue and orange, or the harmony of adjoining colours, such as orange and yellow — in relation to the materials selected for the design and the shades and patterns present in the room in which it will be displayed. Shape is another important element, both the shape of the overall design and the flower forms used within it; the most attractive designs are usually composed of all three basic" shapes — full, round flowerheads, spiky blooms and softer, lacey sprays. The type of container selected also plays an important part in a design,’be it a rustic country basket, a shiny copper pot, or a traditional china or pottery vase. Not all designs need a container, however, and the final chapter shows how to compose pretty Victorian posies, free-style bouquets, festive rings, garlands and swags, and unusual indoor trees and hanging spheres. Illustrated throughout, over 20 individual step-by-step projects provide clear instruction in all the various techniques and will inspire readers to devise individual designs of their own.”

All except Apricot Computers have a turnover of less than £100m a year but their individual profiles are varied. While Apricot and Tri-ang toy company compete in a tough international market, family enterprises like Stoke-on-Trent’s Churchill group, the Morgan car company and Copella Fruit Juices face critical challenges closer to home. And the problems of the Shropshire District Health Authority, Sir John’s other port of call, are formidable. How do you manage an organisation upon which people’s lives depend within the constraints of a tight, fixed budget? Sir John Harvey-Jones works closely with senior management in the six organisations he visits, focusing on the major strategy questions facing them. How can they increase production while maintaining quality? Should they seek a merger partner in order to expand? Is it sensible to diversify into new areas? Is it wise to go for international growth, albeit in the face of stiff competition?”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Black boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 192 pages. From the cover: “Although there are a large number of books on objets d’art available in a higher price range, there is very little to suit the enthusiast of more modest means. This series of handbooks, Collectors’ Pieces, answers that need. These books are intended for the reader who has limited knowledge of the subject, perhaps culled from visits to museums, but who may be encouraged to start a collection of the less expensive pieces. Each volume deals with the subject historically and — where characters such as Josiah Wedgwood are involved — biographically, and explains the processes of manufacture in simple terms. The reader is told where he may see the rarer pieces, and to help him in identification a list of marks is given where appropriate. In fact each volume covers its subject thoroughly, and John Bedford has performed a masterly feat of compression without allowing this fact to impair his fluent and easily assimilated style of writing.”Notes: Jacket designed by Sam Suliman. Flights into Yesterday — The Story of Aerial Archaeology by Leo Deuel (£6.50)Publisher: Macdonald — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0356031527]Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Ex-library with usual marks, sticker to the spine of the dust wrapper has been removed, pocket to the pastedown, slip to the ffep, stamp to the reverse of the title page.Description: From the cover: “Aerial photography has provided the archaeologist with one of his most effective means of research. Unlike his co-worker on the ground the aerial archaeologist is not confined to a limited area. His roving eye takes in a wide panorama at one glance and his work in recent years has frequently resulted in startling discoveries. Flights into Yesterday provides a compelling account of the science, history and personalities of aerial archaeology. It shows the close links between early military reconnaissance and aerial research and how enthusiasts borrowed time and aircraft to aid their searches. It recalls the adventures and misfortunes which early pioneers encountered in an effort to further their investigations. The flights of Colonel Charles Lindbergh over the jungles of South America, and Poidebard’s search for Byzantine camps in the deserts of the Middle East, contrast with Crawford’s patient photography of the meadows of England.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5½".
