China At War by Freda Utley (£249.00)Publisher: London: Faber & Faber — 1939Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little loss, heavy damp-marking to the reverse showing slightly at the panels. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Endpapers and blanks a little grubby. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Map to the rear slightly mis-folded. Description: Illustrated by way of: Frontispiece; Black & White Photographs; Fold-Out Maps [1];

From the cover: “Freda Utley, who has just returned from the seat of war in the Far East, gives us in this book a vivid description of the Chinese war, as she has seen it from the Chinese side, backed by a brilliant expose of the Chinese political situation. One of the very few British newspaper correspondents in the war zone (she represented the News Chronicle), the only Englishwoman to visit the Yangtze fronts, and a world-renowned authority on Far Eastern matters, Miss Utley is quite exceptionally well informed, as readers of her last book, Japan’s Feet of Clay, know. A trained and accurate observer, she allows her sympathy with the Chinese cause to warm but not to warp the truth. A naturally straightforward writer, she makes her story easy to read, deeply interesting, and therefore deeply moving.”

Honest George Monck by J. D. [John David] Griffith Davies (£153.00)Publisher: John Lane The Bodley Head — 1936Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with many short nicks and chips. Leans slightly. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “A SIMPLE soldier of fortune, Monck became one of the foremost captains of his age. Yet there was nothing of the sabre-rattling militarist about him. His pacification of the Highlands of Scotland, achieved with surprisingly little bloodshed, marked him down as a first-rate administrator. As a sailor, too, he was Blake’s equal; and to him even more than to Blake belongs the credit of having removed the Dutch naval menace. But surpassing these, the crowning glory of Monck’s work for England was the Stuart Restoration in 1660.

However, there is more in this book than a record of Monck’s political and military work. There is a clearly-cut picture of the man himself — the soldier who never asked his men to do that which he was afraid to do himself; the sailor who strove to better conditions on the lower deck; the indulgent husband and father; the faithful friend; and always the true patriot. All these aspects of Monck’s life are delightfully brought out by Mr. Davies. And perhaps for the first time he enables both students of history and general readers to understand and appreciate one of England’s greatest sons.”

Italian Intervention In The Spanish Civil War by John F. Coverdale (£149.00)Publisher: Princeton University Press — 1975Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is faded at the spine and creased at the join of the upper panel. Boards a little faded at the edges. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Using hitherto unavailable material from the Italian foreign ministry, Franco’s headquarters, and Mussolini’s secretariat, John F. Coverdale traces the development of Italo-Spanish relations from the beginning of the Fascist regime. His analysis reveals that traditional foreign policy outweighed ideological and internal political considerations in Mussolini’s decision making. John F. Coverdale finds that while Italy’s support was essential to Franco’s victory, Rome exercised very little influence on his decisions. The author concludes that participation in the Spanish Civil War was less important than is generally believed in determining Italy’s entrance into World War II on Hitler’s side, and that it did not significantly weaken her armed forces.”

The Rape of Greece: The King, the Colonels and the Resistance by Peter Murtagh (£129.00)Publisher: London, Sydney, New York, Tokyo, Singapore & Toronto: Simon & Schuster — 1994Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0671710389]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Pages gently age-tanned with light spotting to the blanks and pastedowns. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “IN the early hours of 21 April 1967, Greece, the birthplace of democracy, became the home of the most repressive military dictatorship seen in Europe since the end of the Second World War. A junta of army colonels espousing extreme right-wing views seized power, outlawed political parties and began a seven-year reign of terror.

The Rape of Greece is about democracy betrayed. In laying bare the atrocities of the colonels’ regime, it reveals how this small European country became a pawn in the Cold War ideological battleground, and how agents of the Central Intelligence Agency sought to control Greek politics through their infiltration of the Greek royal family and armed forces.

But The Rape of Greece is also about people fighting back and ultimately winning. When the tanks of the neo-fascist junta rolled through the streets of Athens in 1967, resistance was not far behind. Here is the story of one resistance group, Democratic Defence, its leaders under siege in Athens and their foreign helpers. In the face of a brutal dictatorship that tortured its victims at will, this motley group of men and women — from England, France, Germany, Scandinavia and America — tirelessly smuggled resistance activists out of Greece and bombs and propaganda in. Their astonishing story of bravery and commitment, failures and triumphs, appears here for the first time in print.

Peter Murtagh, who spent five years researching and writing the book, combines the analytical insight of an award-winning investigative journalist with the narrative drive of a natural storyteller. Filled with political intrigue, adventure and larger-than-life characters, The Rape of Greece is a startling and compelling read, and an important chronicle of modern history.”

The Fantastic Art of Frank Frazetta [3 Volumes] by Frank Frazetta (£69.00)Publisher: London & Sydney: Pan Books — 1976Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0330247972]Condition: Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers with a scuff to the spine of volume III which also has a short tear to the join at the tail of the spine. Edges of the text block lightly tanned on all volumes and just encroaching the margins of some of the plates. Description: 3 volumes of 5, only. Volume I is a reprint of the 1975 edition. Volume II is the first US edition of 1977. Volume III is the first US edition of 1978. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Plates; Colour Drawings;

From the cover: “Frazetta is without question the master of Fantasy Art. He exploded all the old preconceptions of Fantasy as a pastoral realm of cute elves, sprites and wise wizards, and re-envisioned it as a brutal wilderness inhabited by virile, ruthless warriors hewn from pure muscle, and armour-clad amazons with astonishingly voluptuous bodies, locked in perpetual combat with horrific primeval monsters and demons.

Once Frazetta had wielded his paints Fantasy could never be the same again. Born in Brooklyn in 1928, he absorbed the colourful pulp adventures of Tarzan and Flash Gordon, and in the fifties he excited the next generation of Fantasy-lovers with his comics and illustrations for the seductive lady blood-sucker, Vampirella, and most fatuously Robert E. Howard’s hero, Conan The Barbarian. His work, with its high levels of testosterone, wicked humour and compositional skill, has been a profound influence on film-makers such as John Milius, Clint Eastwood and George Lucas. In the sixties Frazetta’s images became the poster art for psychedelic counterculture.

Frazetta was no political radical, but his art ripped apart the clean, ordered world of suburban America and replaced it with a gorgeously rendered wasteland of violence and sensuality.”

Text complete, clean and tight.Description: 2nd edition. [First Edition: 1881] A play based on the activities of Girolamo Savonarola. Savonarola was an Italian Dominican friar and an influential contributor to the politics of Florence from 1494 until his execution in 1498. He was known for his book burning, destruction of what he considered immoral art, and his perception of what he thought the Renaissance — which began in his Florence and was at its beginning — ought to become. He vehemently preached against the moral corruption of much of the clergy at the time, and his main opponent was Rodrigo Borgia, who was Pope Alexander VI from 1492, through Savonarola's death, to 1498.Notes: Size: 7¾" x 5". Provocative, unguarded and illuminating, and including the first inside account of Labour’s 1997 election victory as well as the author’s insights into the ‘black arts’ of modern political campaigning, The Unfinished Revolution is essential reading for anyone interested in Blair’s Labour Party, and its — and Britain’s — future.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). The Puritan Gift: Triumph, Collapse and Revival of An American Dream by Kenneth Hopper & William Hopper (£53.00)Publisher: I. B. Tauris & Co. — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1850434190]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Where does the Protestant work ethic come from? And how did America achieve such dominance in management for so long?

The Puritan Gift traces the origins and characteristics of an American managerial culture which, over the course of three centuries, turned a handful of small colonies into the greatest economic and political power on earth. It argues that the energy, social mobility, competitiveness and capacity for innovation, all of which lie at the heart of that culture, have their origins in the discipline and ethos of America’s first wave of European immigrants: the Puritans. Drawing lessons from their own extensive experience, the authors warn that, as America distances itself from the core values which underlay its commercial and economic success during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it puts its own future prosperity and security at risk.

The book also explores how American managerial culture has spread throughout the world. In particular it examines the impact of the US occupation of Japan on the social and manufacturing mores of that country and explains how America’s inherited style of management interacted with Japanese traditions.

This is an original exploration of the dramatic and far-reaching consequences of the Puritans’ ‘gift’ to America — the ethos which produced the early success of America and what came to be known as the American dream.”

Nelson's Ships: A History of the Vessels in Which He Served 1771 - 1805 by Peter Goodwin (£42.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 2002Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0851777422]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slight rippling to the foot of the leaves, possibly caused by slight damp at some time, but inoffensive. Description: Jacket illustration: Nelson's Flagships at Anchor, 1807 by Nicholas Pocock. This is a composite image of Nelson's flagships at the Spithead anchorage painted in 1807. From left to right, Agamemnon, Vanguard (showing her broadside), stern view of Elephant flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the Blue, Captain and then Victory firing a salute and flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the White. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Much has been written about Nelson, the man and his successful career from midshipman to great commander, culminating with his glorious death at the Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805. Added to this, considerable literary works have been published about his flagship at that famous battle, HMS Victory, but little has been written about the other vessels in which he served throughout his career, providing him with experience vital to his professional and personal development.

Beginning with HMS Raisonnable, the 3rd Rate 64-gun ship in which Nelson began his naval career at the start of 1771, Nelson’s Ships provides a service history of the 25 Royal Navy vessels in which Nelson served. All the famous ships-of-the-line are included: Agamemnon, the vessel of which he assumed command in 1793, Captain, which he commanded at Cape St. Vincent, Vanguard, flagship at the Nile and of course Victory. For the first time many of the smaller ships Nelson served in such as Carcass, Badger and La Minerve, are examined. A final chapter is devoted to the 12 ships in which Nelson served only for a very brief period of time.

A comprehensive background to each vessel is provided examining the design, construction and armament. A full service history then follows including the actions in which the ship participated, any modifications that were made, refit histories and costs, a complete list of the commanding officers of the ship and finally the ship’s ultimate fate. Numerous illustrations, superb plans and draughts specially drawn by the author, and a lavish colour artwork section complements the text.

The incidents that occurred whilst Nelson was on board each ship reveal an abridged version of his career and offer both the enthusiast and general reader an insight into the man himself. Utilising the ships’ logs allows the work to examine many important issues in Nelson’s navy such as victualling and health, discipline and punishment, ship handling and repair thus providing a fascinating insight into the reality of life at sea and disproving many of the myths surrounding the Georgian navy. Fully researched and developed by one of the most well known and respected Nelson historians, Nelson’s Ships is an invaluable work for both the academic and enthusiast alike.”

Improved grassland management by John Frame (£34.00)Publisher: Farming Press — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0852362463]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs, tables and charts. From the cover: “In all its diverse forms, grass is the renewable foundation feed for ruminant production — the green gold of many rural regions and, indeed, countries. Competition for agricultural markets, intensifying in a world growing ever smaller, together with a host of economic and political pressures, requires swift and flexible response and adaptation from grassland farmers to the challenge of change and improved efficiency of use. Precision of inputs, predictability of outputs and profitability are triple objectives.

Against this background, this book subdivides grassland management into its interrelated components before dealing with utilisation by grazing and by hay/silage. The approach taken is the application to practice of basic scientific principles using mainly British and European grassland as examples. Nevertheless, the principles can be applied to grassland elsewhere in the temperate world. Management in relation to the new surge of interest in extensification, forage legume use, nature conservation and environmentally sustainable systems of animal production is also covered.

Written in a reader-friendly, advisory style, Improved Grassland Management is a book for grassland farmers, extension officers, students of agriculture and land use and plant scientists — in fact for everyone with an interest in Mother Earth’s green carpet.”

Soviet Risk-taking and Crisis Behavior: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis by Hannes Adomeit (£34.00)Publisher: London, Boston & Sydney: George Allen & Unwin — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0043350437]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper nicked at the top corner of the upper panel otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: From the cover: “Under what conditions is the Soviet leadership prepared to take risks in the conduct of its international affairs? Does Soviet behaviour in crises conform to the commonly accepted ‘rules’ or ‘conventions’ of crisis management? How important are threats, ultimatums and military pressure for the achievement of Soviet objectives? These are questions which have often been asked in the West by political leaders and academic specialists, but they have never been systematically analyzed. In this book Hannes Adomeit provides such an analysis.

Detailed examination of the two Berlin crises forms the empirical background against which comparisons are made with the role of the Soviets in other crises-in Cuba, the Middle East, in Vietnam and in Afghanistan -as well as with patterns of Soviet intervention in Eastern Europe. Dr Adomeit shows that successive Soviet leaderships, whether headed by Stalin, Khrushchev or Brezhnev, have acted as though guided by a set of firm ‘operational principles’. These principles and patterns of Soviet crisis behaviour are explained by the interplay of four factors: an ideology requiring constant political initiative; a wide interpretation of security interests; diverse and growing military power; and the centralizing features of the Soviet system. Together they add up to certain advantages over Western pluralist systems; in particular, they can result in successful strategic deception and surprise.

Soviet Risk-taking and Crisis Behaviour will help the general reader to understand the nature of the Soviet challenge in the years ahead and the practitioner of politics to chart the difficult but necessary course between dangerous complacency and equally dangerous over-reaction to Soviet initiatives. Above all, it will be indispensable for students and specialists in international and comparative politics, since it relates theoretical notions of risk and crisis to actual Soviet foreign policy-combining strategic analysis with bureaucratic models of decision-making.”

Measurement of Responsibility: A Study of Work, Payment and Individual Capacity by Elliott Jaques (£33.00)Publisher: Tavistock Publications — 1956Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Small name sticker to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “THE MEASUREMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY presents perhaps the most funda mental approach yet achieved to the recurring individual and social stresses which disturb the industrial scene. Its theme is that one of the central factors underlying these disturbances is the absence of any objective and agreed method of assessing the re sponsibility carried by individuals at their work.

In the course of practical work by the author in collaboration with members of the Glacier Metal Com pany (an engineering concern), a re definition of the problem has emerged. What is experienced by individuals as level or weight or size of responsi bility has been observed to be con nected solely with the discretion they are required to exercise in doing their work. It has furthermore been dis covered that level of responsibility can be measured objectively and pre cisely by the maximum span of time during which an individual is expected to exercise discretion on his own account until his use of discretion is subjected to review.

By using this measurement — which he terms the time-span of discretion — Dr. Jaques has noted that individuals carrying the same maximum time-span in their work demand—quite independently — as a fair and just return for their work, precisely the same earnings and the same status, regardless of the type of work con cerned. He concludes from these findings that an unrecognized wage and salary structure is operated in tuitively in industry. But because it is unrecognized, departures from it are likely. And it is precisely such de partures which lead to trouble.

In the light of his findings, the author re-examines the meaning of work, of payment for work, and of the capacity of individuals to exercise discretion and discharge responsibility.

The methods described, and the results already obtained from their use, may indicate a route towards the resolution of some aspects of the industrial unrest and individual dis satisfaction with work which are such a crippling feature of modern industrial life. The book, in style as well as in content, is intended for economists, sociologists, political scientists, psychologists, and other social scientists — as well as industrial ists, trade unionists, government officials, and other administrators who are concerned with these problems.”

Hong Kong's History: State and Society Under Colonial Rule by Edited by Tak-Wing Ngo (£32.00)Publisher: London & New York: Routledge — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0415208688]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Tables;

From the cover: “Hong Kong’s rise from obscure fishing port to world city is usually put down to good colonial rule by Britain. This book challenges such a view and shows how the city’s success was shaped by the ruling elite and other native Hong Kongers.

Rewriting Hong Kong’s history from the bottom up, the chapters investigate vital, but hitherto obscured, aspects of the colony’s rise. They cover the Chinese collaboration with the colonial regime, legal discrimination and intimidation, rural politics, social movements, government-business relations, industrial policy, flexible manufacturing and colonial historiography.

Drawing together contributions from historians, sociologists and political scientists, the book highlights the role played by a variety of social actors in Hong Kong’s history and differs both from recent celebrations of British colonialism and anti-colonial Chinese nationalism.”

Making History: Agency, Structure and Change in Social Theory: Agency, Structure and Change in Social Theory by Alex Callinicos (£32.00)Publisher: Cornell University Press — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank and a small address sticker to the pastedown. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: From the cover: “In recent years, the problem of historical change has come to assume central importance among English-speaking social scientists and historians. Much attention has been focused on how we relate institutions and institutional change to actions, and how we think of history as the outcome of this interaction. In Making History, Alex Callinicos takes a fresh look at both Marxist and non-Marxist positions in this debate, giving close attention to theworkofE. J. Hobsbawm, E. P. Thompson, G. A. Cohen, L. Althusser, A. Giddens, J. Elster, and J. Habermas, among others. His main concern is “with the mechanisms through which human beings transform their societies, and, for better or worse, push history onwards”.

Callinicos provides an even-handed and comprehensive synthesis that combines the highly fruitful theories of agency and language elaborated in Anglo-American analytical philosophy, Giddens’s theorization of structuration, and the insights of game theory with the powerful explanatory framework of classical historical materialism. He argues that structural determinism (characteristic of the followers of Althusser), the methodological individualism of the rational-choice Marxists (such as Elster), and the various attempts to reconcile these extremes, are all untenable. In his view, structures do not simply contain or constrain us; they also serve as frameworks that can enable human action. His aim is to demonstrate that human beings possess the power collectively to make history.

Making History is a timely, highly intelligent, and eminently readable book that deserves to be widely read. It will become an important focus for debates on Marxism, theoretical sociology, and philosophy. .”

Nelson's Ships: A History of the Vessels in Which He Served 1771 - 1805 by Peter Goodwin (£32.00)Publisher: London: Conway Maritime Press — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851777422]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Knocked at the bottom corner of the upper board otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: 2nd printing. [First Published: 2002] Jacket illustration: Nelson's Flagships at Anchor, 1807 by Nicholas Pocock. This is a composite image of Nelson's flagships at the Spithead anchorage painted in 1807. From left to right, Agamemnon, Vanguard (showing her broadside), stern view of Elephant flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the Blue, Captain and then Victory firing a salute and flying the flag of Vice-Admiral of the White. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Maps; Tables; Plans;

Persona Granada: Some Memories of Sidney Bernstein and The Early Years of Independent Television by Denis Forman (£32.00)Publisher: London: Andre Deutsch — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0233989870]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Slightest lean otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs;

From the cover: “When ITV first went on air in 1955, Granada Television soon established itself as the most innovative of the new independent television companies. Granada took risks, ignored conventions, and challenged conventional notions of how television programmes should be made. Coronation Street, the hard-hitting World in Action, adventurous drama productions — this was television that made people sit up and watch.

Denis Forman was there from the start, and in this richly detailed and compelling memoir he combines an affectionate portrait of Granada’s prime mover, the extraordinary Sidney Bernstein, with an insider’s account of the personalities behind the scenes and the triumphs — and occasional disasters — of this remarkable television company.

They were heady days. Granada defied the antiquated rules of political broadcasting with its ground-breaking coverage of a by-election which was to change the course of television’s relationship with politicians. There were frequent battles with the Independent Television Authority over investigative reports thought to have gone too far in exposing scandal and corruption. It was a time of creative ferment, a time when Granada’s team of talented programme-makers earned the company its enduring reputation.

Denis Forman charts the history of Granada with abundant wit and a refreshing candour. His own contribution to the Granada success story, culminating in his close personal involvement in the universally acclaimed The Jewel in the Crown, was immense. He is modest about his own achievements, and generous in his appreciation of the many colleagues — some of them later to become senior figures in television — who made Granada what it was. But as this engrossing memoir reveals, none of it could have happened without the towering presence of the original persona Granada, Sidney Bernstein: founding father, guiding spirit, and one of the most remarkable men of our century.”

The Cistercians in the Early Middle Ages: Written to Commemorate the Nine Hundredth Anniversary of Foundation of the Order At Citeaux in 1098 Under the Patronage of Blessed Vincent Kadlubek, Bishop of Krakow (1208-18), Monk of Jedrzejow (1218-1223) by David H. Bruised at the tail of the spine with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Graphs; Maps;

From the cover: “The Cistercians in the Early Middle Ages seeks to portray the growth, conventual, cultural, spiritual and economic life, of a religious Order which was second to none in medieval Europe. Published to mark the nono-centenary of the foundation of the order at Citeaux in France in 1098, this volume concerns itself with the first 250 years of Cistercian history, sometimes called the ‘Golden Age’ of the Order, brought to a close by the Black Death.

No less than well over six hundred monasteries of ‘white monks’ spread throughout Europe, and into the Near East, and not only endeavoured to maintain an austere life of simplicity, accompanying the daily round of worship and prayer, but also played a significant role in bringing woodland and wasteland into cultivation. Sheep-farming was one of their noted activities, but they also participated successfully in industry and trade. In all this the monks were assisted by a large number of lay-brothers (known as the converse), who often outnumbered the monks by more than two to one, and who in practice undertook much of the manual labour.

The Cistercians left their mark in Europe in other ways, not least in some splendid architectural masterpieces, and in their contribution to annals and chronicles which tell of the political history, as well as of climatic and tectonic phenomena of their day. This volume endeavours to illustrate, with original maps and plans, much of the white monks’ activity, nor does it neglect the hundreds of Cistercian-affiliated nunneries which sought to emulate the male communities of the Order.”

The American Century: People, Power and Politics: An Illustrated History by Harold Evans with Gail Buckland & Kevin Baker (£30.00)Publisher: Jonathan Cape — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0224052179]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “The British may have claimed the 19th century by force, and the Chinese may cast a long shadow over the 21st, but the 20th century belongs to the United States. This is the premise behind Harold Evans’s robust, sweeping, spectacularly illustrated account of the people and events that gave rise to America’s political and cultural dominance.

Evans begins in the 1880s, when it was still uncertain whether America, with its diverse peoples, manifold beliefs and impossible ideals, would even survive its own democratic experiment or manage to reconcile an increasingly headlong materialism with the original virtues of the Republic. He shows how, from that time forward, the citizens of the United States saw increases in wealth and personal freedom unequalled in history, paralleled by the growing power and influence of the country abroad. He covers upheavals and victories with succinct and insightful prose, aided by a splendid array of 900 fresh, remarkable images. Here are the Presidents, nineteen of them, from a Civil War general to a movie star; here are Al Capone and J. Edgar Hoover, Martin Luther King and the Ku Klux Klan.

The American Century is an epic work, an incomparable telling of the rise of the most powerful nation in the world.”

Law and Sexuality: The Global Arena by Edited by Carl Stychin & Didi Herman (£28.00)Publisher: University of Minnesota Press — 2001Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0816638705]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. First published by The Athlone Press in 2000 as Sexuality in the Legal Arena

From the cover: “What does your sexuality have to do with your status as subject, citizen, or spouse? In our global political economy, this question has moved out of the domestic closet and into the world of public policy, human rights, and cultural norms, and is increasingly mediated, negotiated, and legislated in the legal arena. Prominent scholars of law and sexuality on four continents cross disciplines and national boundaries to explore provocative legal and political issues raised by the cultural, social, and political organization of intimate life. Encompassing a broad spectrum of perspectives, from literary analysis and postcolonial studies to feminist, queer, and race theory, their critical, skeptical, and often pragmatic analysis maps the current state of the global intersections between law and sexuality and social change.
