To Find A Golden Pony by Amanda Gavin [Clodagh Micaela Gibson Jarvie] (£278.00)Publisher: J. M. Dent & Sons — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with corresponding grazing to the dustwrapper. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight. A pleasant copy of an uncommon title. Description: From the cover: “This is a pony book with a difference. It deals sensitively with a young girl’s companionship with animals, and how she learns to manage them while at the same time developing self-reliance during a period of delicate readjustment. Jo Garrett is five when her mother dies, and her father wisely sends her away from his Suffolk farm to live with cousins in Sussex. So, until she is ten, she comes under the spell of ponies, caring for them as well as riding them. She then returns to the farm, and her father is pleased to notice what a self-confident child she has become, with definite ideas of her own as to what she wants from life. Jo’s personality is also contrasted with all the others in the story — both human and animal — who come fully alive as individuals in this entertaining account of country life. Finally, Jo’s slow adjustment to the idea of her father’s remarriage is described with understanding and insight..”Notes: Jacket designed by Elisabeth Grant. Illustrated by Elisabeth Grant. S. R. Badmin and the English Landscape by Chris Beetles (£79.00)Publisher: London: Collins — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0004120205]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Signed by the author on the half-title page beneath his name — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Black & White Plates; Chronology Tables; Laid in publishers compliment slip and exhibition invitation.

From the cover: “S. R. BADMIN AND THE ENGLISH LANDSCAPE is a celebration and appreciation of one of Britain’s foremost watercolour painters. The work of Stanley Roy Badmin is uniquely familiar and dear to the post-war generation. No other artist has had such consistent popular exposure: for forty years his beautifully detailed and romantic landscapes have graced nature books and travel guides, Puffin Picture Books, the covers of Radio Times and Reader’s Digest, and innumerable greetings cards and calendars.

S. R. BADMIN AND THE ENGLISH LANDSCAPE is an authoritative and long-overdue survey of Badmin’s life and art. The text is lavishly accompanied by a selection of his book illustrations as well as a wealth of his sketches taken from over sixty years of careful work and loving observation of nature.

The text is followed by a catalogue raisonne of Badmin’s etchings, many of them reproduced here for the first time, together with full-colour reproductions of forty-four of Badmin’s best watercolours. The detailed captions to the plates are based on the artist’s own memories, giving a privileged insight into the technique and inspiration for each work. A list of exhibits and book illustrations and a full chronology complete this account of England’s most popular watercolourist.

Badmin teaches us to look again at nature, and share his pleasure in the landscape around us. His countryside is our countryside.”

The Treacle Mine Affair by D. E. Tucker (£28.00)Publisher: The Book Guild — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0863328407]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Slight tanning to the edges of the text block otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “One summer the inhabitants of Bincombe begin to behave strangely. They do not know they have been ‘pixillated’ by a peculiar effluent from the local disused lead workings, which include the oddly named ‘Treacle Mine’.

When Peg and Robin join their country cousins Helen and Adrian at Up-hill Farm for the holidays they form an intrepid team to unravel the fate of some stolen cattle and the mystery of the mine. They become entangled in an adventure much more dangerous and exciting than anything they had bargained for. For instance, Adrian’s Geiger counter shows such disturbing results on samples of water that radioactivity adds a frightening threat to the adventure. Strangers invade the village, headed by a master criminal called ‘The Octopus’. They are obviously up to no good and the daring quartet decide to infiltrate the Roman Cavern — scene of the crooks’ nefarious activities.

The boys make an horrific underground descent through a swallow-hole, but their dangerous attempt only raises more questions as to what dreadful scheme the gang are actually involved in. A good deal of hard work on a steam traction engine, plus the loyal support of their dog Shep, enables the cousins to penetrate the villains’ defences and uncover a wicked intrigue which threatens even more than the well-being of the village.

The final part of the adventure takes them into awesome underground passages, where stalagmites and stalactites provide a surrealistic setting for a crime which has distinctly contemporary significance. This thrilling narrative not only gives the reader an exciting mystery to solve — it also provides rich information on country living and on some of the environmental issues that concern us today.”

The Art of Flowers by Laurence Buffet-Challié (£24.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pleasant overall but has two short closed tears to the top edge, one at the head of the spine and the other at the head of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Box a little faded and marked but more than acceptable.Description: 41 colour plates. 87 black and white illustrations. 78 explanatory diagrams. From the cover: “The flower as a decorative object is an integral part of the home and in recent times has become an important element in the art of interior design. Here, for the first time, the national styles of Germany, England, France, Italy and Scandinavia have been compared, each influenced by the particular climate, way of life, and artistic history of their country. The book begins with the study of basic forms and techniques; later the amateur is taught how to exploit the natural beauty of flowers, how to see colours and arrange a design which will blend in with its setting. The flower arrangements are shown simply and clearly; explanatory diagrams of their construction appear next to the magnificent colour plates or black and white illustrations, most of which have been especially photographed for this book. The author, a specialist in the art of decoration, writes in collaboration with Jacques Bedat, an eminent florist, who created many of the flower arrangements reproduced, and whose creative fantasy is shown in his arrangements for the Rothschilds, the Duchess of Windsor, Renault, Citroen and many others. The Art of Flowers is dedicated to the flower-lover, whether the source of his pleasure is growing, arranging or just looking at flowers.”Notes: Illustrated by Jacques Bedat. Size: 9¾" x 10¼". High Noon: Bobby Robson's Year At Barcelona by Jeff King (£20.50)Publisher: Virgin — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1852276339]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges with a light crease the length of the lower join. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “Bobby Robson is one of the most successful British managers ever; the only man to lead England to a World Cup semi-final on foreign soil; a football survivor who has won major trophies in three different countries. But, in his four decades in the game he loves with such a passion, nothing had prepared him for the everyday madness and intense pressure that is FC Barcelona.

The world’s best supported football club comes equipped with a high-priced squad of superstars and super-egos including the world’s most sought-after player, an uncontrollable force of nature called Ronaldo. It also comes with 100,000 fans who are capable of barracking the coach even when his side are winning 6-0, and worst of all a relentlessly voracious press gang who take great pleasure in feeding off errant football managers. But Robson is not a man to walk away, even when Newcastle United offered him a £5 million contract.

I wasn’t going to let anybody put a blemish on my career. I’ve never been one to surrender and I’m not about to start now’. High Noon is the dramatic, absorbing, behind-the-scenes story of his toughest challenge.”

Logic Circuit Design by Alan W. Shaw (£20.50)Publisher: Fort Worth: Saunders College Publishers — 1993Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 0030507936]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Diagrams;

From the cover: “With Shaw’s conversational writing style, sophomore engineering and computer science majors will find this text’s coverage of combinational and sequential logic design easy to understand and a pleasure to read. The text is remarkably clear and provides extensive examples. Shaw maintains an ongoing relationship with industry, which is reflected in the text’s primary goal of preparing students for entry into the workplace — ready to design.

The text’s design-first organization allows students to master a simple systematic design process, then move to design and analysis of more complex circuits. The use of polarized notation offers students an easy-to-learn notation that clarifies the thought process in design, allows a simplification of the sign process, and improves documentation. Software simulation is stressed in all designed circuits, allowing students to test circuits before committing them to hardware. An early introduction to programmable logic devices reflects their importance in design.”

The Road to Prosperity: An Industrial Policy by Ernest Marples (£19.50)Publisher: Staples Press — 1947Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a triangular tear to the head of the spine, short closed tear to the foot of the same and soiling to the lower panel. Top edge of the text block tanned. Tanning to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: From the cover: “THE ROAD TO PROSPERITYsays this book, is Industrial Co-partnership, the essential ingredients of which are Joint Consultation, Employee Shareholding and Profit Sharing. There can be no true Co-partnership whenever these three features are not working in effective combination.

The author argues that Co-partnership is the key to production, and therefore to prosperity. He rests this claim on the belief that, though human beings need material incentives to labour, they need also a satisfying spiritual climate in which to perform their labours. This satisfaction cannot be attained unless all concerned, from highest to lowest, feel for their enterprise not only an essential responsibility, but a common pride and pleasure in its success. When all have become partners, sharing the rewards and, within limits, the risks of what they do, a new relationship arises between them and a new sense of their fellowship as men. Thus, in every undertaking, spiritual and material incentives can be made to work in the same direction, and the resulting benefit will accrue not only to man as consumer but to man as man.

The author denies that there is anything Utopian in this, and the body of the book is mainly concerned to show what are the points to be watched in establishing a scheme of Industrial Co-partnership, what dangers must be avoided and what precautions taken. He draws freely on the experience of many concerns which are already operating such schemes successfully, and has reproduced in outline some of the more notable. Nor is he content, like so many, to put his trust in exhortation alone, but, like a practical statesman, suggests a way by which the tax machine can coax both sides of industry into the practice of Co-partnership.

As a politician in a democracy, he seeks also to recommend his ideas politically. They accord, he maintains, with the true philosophy of Conservatism, namely, the spreading of power and property in many independent hands, as against the Socialist philosophy, which is the centralisation of both in the small area of London known genetically as Whitehall.”

From the cover: “Compendious, informative and engaging, Kitchen offers feel-good food for cooks and eaters that is comforting but always seductive, nostalgic but with a modern twist — whether express-way easy-exotic recipes for the weekday rush, leisurely slow-cook dishes for weekends and special occasions, or irresistible cakes and cookies in true “domestic goddess” style. It answers everyday cooking quandaries — what to give the kids for tea, how to rustle up a meal for friends or an impromptu kitchen party in moments, or what to do about those black bananas, wrinkled apples and bullet-hard plums — and since real cooking is so often about leftovers, here one recipe can morph into another… from ham hocks to pea soup and pasties, from braised chicken to Chinatown salad. This isn’t just about being thrifty but about being creative and seeing how recipes evolve.

As well as offering the reader a mouth-watering array of inspired new recipes — from clams with chorizo to Guinness gingerbread, from Asian braised beef to flourless chocolate lime cake, from pasta alia Genovese to Venetian carrot cake — Nigella rounds up her no-nonsense kitchen kit must-haves (and, crucially, what isn’t needed) in the way of equipment and magical standby ingredients. But above all, she reminds the reader how much pleasure there is to be had in real food and in reclaiming the traditional rhythms of the kitchen, as she cooks to the beat of the heart of the home, creating simple, delicious recipes to make life less complicated.

The expansive, lively narrative, with its rich feast of food, makes this new work a natural 21st-century successor to Nigella’s classic How To Eat, this time with a wealth of photographs from the instructive to the glorious, and accompanied by a BBC TV series.”

All the great stars are here — the Garbos, Brandos, Deans and Monroes — each described in an individual pen portrait with pictures of them in their greatest roles. Equally, individual accounts are also given of the great directors from around the world, not only those lauded by the critics as auteurs but also the honest journeymen who have contributed much to the pleasure of films without setting out to stamp their world view on them. I have converted many conservative fish eaters to a ceviche or a delicate fish soup, and some have thereafter become dedicated fish lovers too; That is what I would like to achieve with this book. I hope that everyone who reads it will reach a better understanding of fish, and therefore become more familiar with it. The Illustrated Treasury of Australian Verse by Beatrice Davis (£14.50)Publisher: Nelson — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0170064077]Condition: Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with a little wear to the dust wrapper as a result. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Top corner of the last few leaves slightly damp-wrinkled. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise and not an unpleasant copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “THIS SELECTION of popular verse speaks with the voice of Australia, from the convict era to the present day. It is a book to give pleasure to all lovers of verse; to recall the old favourites nostalgically remembered; and to open new doors by introducing the modern poets who speak of our world today.

In harmony with the poems, an inspired selection of paintings, drawings and photographs complement the poets’ visions and help to evoke atmosphere, time and place1.

‘Click Go the Shears’, The Wild Colonial Boy’, ‘Waltzing Matilda’, ‘The Man from Snowy River’ — the ballads with their enduring charm take first place in the book as they do in the hearts of many Australians young and old.

Love of country and the beauty of the Australian landscape are celebrated in poems like Henry Kendall’s ‘September in Australia’ and Dorothea Mackellar’s ‘My Country’ and in many later lyrics. Henry Lawson, Shaw Neilson, Mary Gilmore, are all given their place, as the selection moves on to Kenneth Slessor, Douglas Stewart and their contemporaries. Then comes the modern scene, with younger poets such as Thomas Shapcott, Bruce Dawe, and Les Murray.

Quality and clarity — as well as popular appeal — have governed the choice in compiling this lively anthology. In making her selection, Beatrice Davis has helped distil the Australian experience; she has done so in a way that can be shared by all Australians now, and for many years to come.”

Period Details: A Sourcebook for House Restoration by Judith & Martin Miller (£14.00)Publisher: Mitchell Beazley — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0855336501]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: 3rd printing. [First Published: 1987] Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “The greatest pleasure of buying a period house is the opportunity to rediscover its original character by restoring features that have been covered up, destroyed or removed over the years.

Period Details offers a unique pictorial survey of structural and decorative styles, fixtures and fittings, period by period and feature by feature throughout the house. Approximately 1,000 colour photographs, many of them commissioned specially for the book and all accompanied by informative captions, provide an invaluable guide for amateur restorers, as well as for architects, builders and decorators.

The key to successful restoration is attention to detail — door hinges and catches as well as the doors themselves, cornices and skirting boards as well as walls and ceilings. Judith and Martin Miller take an in-depth approach, supplying a wealth of detailed information on style, ornament, dating, materials and construction techniques. The emphasis is thoroughly practical, with sound commonsense advice on how to restore particular features (such as sash windows and wooden floors) and how to combine an authentic period feel with the requirements of modern living. The best reproduction features are covered, for home-owners who are unable to obtain the originals.

The book begins with an authoritative introduction which places interiors in the context of a general chronology of styles and architectural developments. Then follows the heart of the book — a feature-by-feature survey which covers doors, windows, floors, ceilings, walls, staircases, lighting, fittings for bathrooms and kitchens, and conservatories. The third major section is a Directory, listing suppliers, restorers, retailers, manufacturers, and useful sources of information. A Glossary gives succinct definitions of architectural terms.

An essential reference tool for anyone contemplating restoration, Period Details also provides illuminating background information for those of us who enjoy historic houses.”

Fine Herbs: Ornamental Plants for the Garden by Deni Bown (£12.50)Publisher: Unwin Hyman — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0044401337]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Tables;

From the cover: “The growing of herbs in our gardens, usually for culinary purposes, has enjoyed a great revival in recent years. The pleasure of brushing past sweet-smelling herbs on a summer’s evening and the satisfaction of picking fresh mint, parsley and thyme to enhance a recipe are familiar to many gardeners. It is perhaps a less familiar endeavour to try growing herbs that are beautiful plants in their own right — to grow variegated or coloured varieties that add interest and distinction to the garden.

In this book the author has selected over forty such plants to tempt the keen gardener — who could resist a double flowered celandine or golden variegated jasmine? — and describes their cultivation, history, medicinal and culinary uses with detailed and infectious enthusiasm.

Here, for anyone interested in herbs, is a book to add an extra dimension to their knowledge and to provide a source of inspiration for every plantsman and woman.”

The Fry Chronicles: An Autobiography by Stephen Fry (£12.50)Publisher: London: Michael Joseph — 2010Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0718154835]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Previous owners' inscription to the half-title page otherwise a fine copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Stephen Fry arrived at Cambridge on probation: a convicted fraudster and thief, an addict, liar, fantasist and failed suicide, convinced that at any moment he would be found out and flung away.

Instead, university life offered him love, romance and the chance to stand on a stage and entertain. He met and befriended bright young things like Emma Thompson and Hugh Laurie and (after working out how to cheat the university examination system) emerged as one of the most promising comic talents in the country.

This is the intriguing, hilarious and utterly compelling story of how the Stephen the nation knows (or thinks it knows) began to make his presence felt as he took his first tentative steps in the worlds of television, journalism, radio, theatre and film. Shameful tales of sugar, shag and champagne jostle with insights into credit cards, classic cars and conspicuous consumption, Blackadder, Broadway and the BBC.

For all its trademark wit and verbal brilliance, this is a book that is not afraid to confront the aching chasm that separates public image from private feeling. Welcome to The Fry Chronicles, one of the boldest, bravest, most revealing and heartfelt accounts of a man’s formative years that you will ever have the exquisite pleasure of reading.”

The Book of Welwyn: The Story of the Five Villages and The Garden City by Richard J. [James] Busby (£12.00)Publisher: Chesham: Barracuda Books Limited — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0860230236]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is tanned at the spine and price clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: 3rd edition. Contains: Black & white photographs; Facsimiles; Maps; Maps to the endpapers and blanks; Frontispiece;

From the cover: “Welwyn Garden City is a little over fifty years of age, but man settled here over four thousand years ago — and left behind his imprint. Bronze Age man made his home here and the Romans straddled the area with their roads and built their farmhouses around Welwyn.

The Saxons may have given Tewin its name, but it was the Normans who made the first major impact with four barons owning much of the area in 1089, and building mills — Welwyn’s earliest industrial development.

Digswell, Lemsford, Ayot St Peter all come into the story of Welwyn’s past — and twice in their long history a single family dominated the area: first the Perients and later the Cowpers.

Lamb, Desborough, Palmerston and Salisbury are among the national figures who strode through the centuries as lords and priests, bankers and innovators, soldiers and ultimately reformers came to Welwyn, put their stamp on it and faded from the scene. Here are the building blocks of the past — the founding of churches, schools, many local institutions, and lastly, the second Garden City.

The Book Of Welwyn tells the story of the past of these villages and the founding and development of the Garden City briskly and with an abundance of illustration. The author has delved deeply in his researches and selected pictures from many sources — a factual, entertaining and invaluable record of the past of all that is Welwyn.

The Book Of Welwyn has been published in both limited and general editions to provide an insight into a community of city and countryside. It will become a standard work of reference and a source of pleasure to all who care for Welwyn Garden City and its older neighbours.”
