The Battle of Britain: Then and Now by Edited by Winston G. Ramsey (£57.00)Publisher: London: Battle of Britain Prints International — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0900913258]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1980] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Ribbon Markers [1]; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Forty years later, After the Battle magazine has ploughed an entirely fresh furrow across this legendary field of human conflict to produce what has now come to be regarded as a memorial to The Few’.

This 816-page book contains over one thousand seven hundred pictures and over half a million words of text contributed by specialists, enthusiasts and historians. It does not attempt to re-tell the story of the battle once again. Instead it has been the Editor’s intention to bring a new aspect to the combat between July 10 — October 31, 1940 through the presentation of comparative ‘then and now’ photographs familiar to readers of After the Battle magazine.

Never before has such detailed coverage been given to the losses of either the Royal Air Force or the Luftwaffe. The graves of RAF aircrew that were killed have been listed, visited by the editorial team and photographed as a complete and lasting record of those that died. The pilots, their memorials, crashes and crash sites, and the aircraft that have survived are profusely illustrated. Twenty of the most famous fighter aerodromes from which they flew have been explored and are described as they were at the time and as they are today, with a particularly detailed account of one typical front line station.

With an extra 96 pages, the Mk II edition brings together all the additional research and information on the battle which has come to light since the book was originally published. Also included is a complete listing of ‘The Few’ — all those aircrew of Fighter Command who participated in the Battle — which is the culmination of more than twenty-five years’ work by John Holloway. Plus illustrated indexes of aircraft and personnel together with a pen portrait of Pilot Officer Keith Gillman — featured on the dustjacket.

No book has ever been published that chronicles the Battle of Britain in this way. Among its pages, men and events, aircraft and aerodromes that have already been consigned to the past are commemorated in the present.”

Undressing Cinema: Clothing and Identity in the Movies by Stella Bruzzi (£47.00)Publisher: London & New York: Routledge — 1997Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 0415139562]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Filmography; Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “Bruzzi shows how, far from being mere accessories, clothes are key elements in the construction of cinematic identities. She uses case studies to reassess established ideas about costume and fashion, and to challenge conventional interpretations.

From Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy, to sharp-suited gangsters in Tarantino movies, clothing is central to film. In Undressing Cinema, Stella Bruzzi explores how far from being mere accessories, clothes are key elements in the construction of cinematic identities, and she proposes new and dynamic links between cinema, fashion and costume history, gender, queer theory and psychoanalysis. Bruzzi uses case studies drawn from contemporary popular cinema to reassess established ideas about costume and fashion in cinema, and to challenge conventional interpretations of how masculinity and femininity are constructed through clothing.”

The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". William Nicholson, Painter: Paintings, Woodcuts, Writings, Photographs by Edited by Andrew Nicholson (£39.00)Publisher: London: Giles de la Mare — 1996Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1900357003]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper appears unevenly faded on the lower panel otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Chronological tables [1]; Colour plates; Black & white plates; Black & white drawings; Colour frontispiece; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “William Nicholson (1872-1949), who is known by many for his early woodcuts and the radical posters of the Beggarstaff Brothers in the 1890s, has become recognized as one of the foremost English artists of his time for the whole range of his work. His haunting downland landscapes, his remarkable still lifes, which capture light and colour in an entirely fresh way, and the varied portraits by which he mainly earned his living form the core of his output and have become greatly prized. This book, compiled by two grandsons, Andrew and Tim Nicholson, is with its representative selection of his pictures the first to do justice to the extraordinary diversity of William Nicholson’s oeuvre.

It provides at the same time a documentary account of William Nicholson’s life, using contemporary records, articles and reminiscences, and above all quoting extensively from the numerous letters William wrote to his family and friends, many of them to his son Ben Nicholson, and from the letters they wrote to him as well. The majority are from private sources and have never appeared in print before. What emerges in this unique and beautifully illustrated volume is a highly detailed and most appealing portrait of the man and the artist.

What he painted, why and for whom; what spurred him on to experiment and artistic adventure; how he fared in times of elation and anguish; how he combined the serious playfulness of his vision with a deep affection for nature; and how he collaborated with some of the leading men of his day, among them Rudyard Kipling, J. M. Barrie, William Orpen, Edwin Lutyens, his son-in-law Robert Graves, and Winston Churchill — all this is revealed, and much more.

William Nicholson, Painter includes 110 colour plates of his oil paintings and over 250 black and white reproductions and photographs.”

Korean Music: Its History And Its Performance by Keith Pratt (£34.00)Publisher: London: Faber & Faber; Seoul: Jung Eum Sa Publishing Corporation — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0571100813]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the dust wrapper slightly ruffled otherwise a very well presented copy. LACKS THE ORIGINAL BOX & CASSETTE TAPES.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Colour Plates; Musical scores; Maps; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Korean music is one of the most splendid and distinctive of all the great East Asian arts. Varied in form and instrumentation, rich in texture and tone-colour, sophisticated in rhythm and mood, it is still little known in the West, though it is now attracting increasing attention. Keith Pratt, one of the few British scholars to have made an extensive study of it, gives an account of its development over the past fifteen hundred years. He explains the social importance of music and dance in both traditional and modern Korea, and discusses their links with Chinese music and their individual characteristics. At the core of his book is a unique collection of pictures and drawings showing the representation of music in Korean art. The 142 colour plates, many of them reproducing Korean works for the first time, constitute a remarkable survey of literati and folk art traditions. There are examples of painting, sculpture, metalwork, pottery and wood-carving.”

Victorian Britain and Ireland in Colour by Janice Anderson & Reinhard Schultz (£26.00)Publisher: Carlton — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1844425584]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Leans slightly otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “The Victorian age was one of expansion in many areas, none more so than that of JM travel. With the success of explorers worldwide people’s curiosity grew, and the advent of the railroad in Great Britain and Ireland, which at that time was part of the United Kingdom, meant that the general public could do their own exploring. Many parts of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales that had, at one time, seemed remote were now within relatively easy travelling distance.

This collection of unique polychrome colour photographs, which have never been seen before, captures many of the vistas that became so popular with Victorian holidaymakers -from the quaint and picturesque snapshots of Devon and Cornwall to the tranquillity of the Irish countryside via the beautiful coastline of Wales or the hustle and bustle of London, up to the broads of Norfolk and further north to the wild, heather-strewn hills and awe-inspiring lochs of Scotland.

Many of these sites are still highly popular holiday venues and with good reason, since for the most part they have been protected for historical or environmental reasons. What they share is an abundance of charm and character and, in the cases of those rural and coastal locations, a measure of, peace and tranquillity.

Accompanied by informative, and often thought-provoking captions, these pictures will transport the reader back to a time when the pace of life was, for all its new inventions, a little calmer and more leisurely. Victorian Britain & Ireland in Colour is a thoroughly engaging window on to a bygone age that will captivate readers.”

Renaissance Architecture in Venice 1450-1540 by Ralph Lieberman (£24.00)Publisher: Frederick Muller — 1982Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0584950349]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Lower panel a little tanned. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank alongside a small area of spotting. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs [109]; Colour Photographs [16]; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “Venice has long been hymned as the most beautiful city in the world: a fantastic urban complex delicately and evocatively built in the midst of a lagoon, her main thoroughfares forming an aqueous network plied by gondolas and barges. One of the world’s first republics, for centuries Venice wielded awesome power and imposed her symbol, the Lion of St Mark, throughout the Mediterranean. And because she sat enthroned at the major junction between the Byzantine East and the Latin West, between the Gothic North and Italy, still rooted in her Classical past, her art and architecture reflected an extraordinary spectrum of influences, traditions and concepts.

This handsomely illustrated book surveys the ninety years between 1450 and 1540, which saw the transformation of Venetian architecture from florid late Gothic to the first examples of the High Renaissance style. These were the decades in which some of the city’s most famous and magnificent structures were built, including the churches of San Zaccaria and Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the Scala dei Giganti in the courtyard of the Doge’s Palace, the Clock Tower and the Libreria Marciana, and the Scuola San Rocco. It was during this period, too, that the Piazza San Marco and the Piazzetta were dramatically transformed.

The author demonstrates that the architecture of this period was dominated by an ever-changing search for a unique and idiomatic style that would unite two of Venice’s local traditions, the Byzantine and the Gothic, as well as the influences of ancient Rome and the new concepts that were flowering in Florence and Rome. By displaying the rich and often bewildering variety of the buildings, this book reveals that the Early Renaissance in Venetian architecture may be understood as an attitude rather than as a specific style. Lieberman finally urges that the book should be an aid to looking at the buildings in Venice, not a substitute for it. The book is sufficient in itself, but its beautiful pictures and wealth of information compel one to experience more closely this startling period of architecture in Venice.”

Character Steins: A Collector's Guide by Eugene V. Manusov & Mike Wald (£22.00)Publisher: Cornwall — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0845347845]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper has a tape reinforcement to the reverse of the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “This comprehensive book provides a finely illustrated guide to the field of character stein collecting. These unique figural pieces, usually not cylindrical, are modeled so that the body and lid form a caricature, a figure, or an object. The fanciful imagery of the steins is always imaginative, and sometimes comical. An eclectic variety of creations are depicted in the steins: people (monks, historic personages, military figures, mythological characters); animals (horses, lions, foxes’ heads — even a rhinoceros); and objects (skulls, sports equipment, buildings, for example).

The book thoroughly examines each of these and is arranged according to subject depicted, each chapter treating a different category. The result is an intriguing picture catalog containing over 600 illustrations of steins and stein-related items, many of which are in full color. Each illustration is accompanied by a brief description that includes the stein’s dimensions, its coloring, a translation of old German inscriptions, an explanation of what the stein represents, and the manufacturers (if known). The text also offers an extensive listing of the manufacturer’s marks that are found on many of the steins.

Several special chapters written by authorities on character steins have been included in the book: Jack G. Lowenstein writes about Beer Stein Ceramics, Ron Fox tells How Musterschutz Character Steins Were Made, and the late Dr. J. Joseph Hersh contributed an interesting chapter on The Hexagram as the Brewer’s Symbol. There are also chapters on contemporary steins and the artifacts relating to them, and a concise history of antique character drinking vessels. Since the publication of the Encyclopedia of Character Steins in 1976, old and new character stein collectors have brought forth a number of previously unknown steins. The book includes pictures of these newly discovered steins, and complements them with a fascinating section that outlines new facts that have come to light concerning the intricacies of this absorbing field of study. The chapter Musterschutz and the Elusive # Mark sheds light on the identity of the manufacturer of the popular so-called Musterschutz steins.

Collectors like Werner Sahm, Roland Henschen, and Lotti Lopez, through diligent searching, have been able to obtain copies of many original stein manufacturers’ catalogs, some pages of which show original sketches or photos of character steins. Because of this research, the authors are able to display in the Old Catalogs portion of the book some of these exciting finds from manufacturers such as Rosskopf & Gerz, Steinzeugwerke, Reinhold Hanke, Mer-kelbach & Wick, Marzi & Remy, and J. W. Remy. These catalogs facilitated the search to identify the previously unknown makers of many character steins.

In addition to these catalogs, much new information has come from researchers who have recently published their results in Prosit, the quarterly publication of Stein Collectors International. While much progress has been made in determining manufacturers, there is still much to be discovered. Answers always seem to raise new questions; new character steins that are “found” occasionally fill in known gaps, but more often seem to carry still unknown marks or styles. Gene Manusov’s and Mike Wald’s enthusiasm for the study and collection of character steins is infectious. In this highly informative work, collectors, dealers, and antique lovers will enjoy their beautiful pictures supplemented by their stimulating perceptive text.”

From the cover: “Harewood House has been the Lascelles family home for over 200 years. Built by John Carr of York over a period of eleven years between 1759-1771, the spectacular interior is the work of the Scottish architect Robert Adam. He designed the exquisite ceilings decorated by Joseph Rose, Biaglio Rebecca and Antonio Zucchi. The house contains unrivalled furniture made especially for Harewood by Thomas Chippendale, born only a few miles up the Wharfe Valley at Otley, and a famous collection of Sevres porcelain.

Harewood House is surrounded by 1,000 acres of fine parkland, gardens and woodland shaped by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the creator of eighteenth-century English landscaping.

In the rooms hang many distinguished family portraits painted by such renowned artists as Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney, John Hoppner and Sir Thomas Lawrence, water-colours by J. M. W. Turner and Thomas Girtin, and Renaissance masterpieces by Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto and El Greco. In addition there are essays on The English Language by Barbara M. H. Strang and The Bible in English by C. H. Sisson.

The enquiring reader and student will find articles on a wide range of subjects covering literary forms such as the Metrical Romances, surveying writers with a common theme like the Metaphysical Poets, explaining important religious writings such as the Marprelate pamphlets and historical events, such as the closure of the playhouses, which crucially affected the literature of the time. Fauve Painting: The Making of Cultural Politics by James D. Herbert (£21.50)Publisher: New Haven & London: Yale University Press — 1992Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0300050682]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Occasional light pencil marginalia, easily erased. Security sticker to the rear pastedown not so easily removed. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour photographs;

From the cover: “In this provocative new account of Fauvism, James D. Herbert explores how the paintings of Henri Matisse, Andre Derain and Maurice Vlaminck engaged many of the pressing issues of their day, and simultaneously camouflaged that engagement. Fauve pictures depicted the landscape in a manner that facilitated the cultural expansion of sophisticated Parisians into the suburbs as residents and into the south of France and overseas as tourists. Matisse’s nudes attributed gendered roles to viewer and viewed, and later, at the close of the Fauve period, participated in the formulation of the colonial account of Africa. By combining the grande tradition of classical painting and the more recent legacy of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, Fauve paintings fused tradition and innovation to produce an image of a national culture ostensibly unified, eternal and naturally French. In short, Herbert contends that these pictures made politics from culture.

Herbert’s major contribution to our understanding of Fauve painting, however, lies in his examination of how the myth of die Fauves’ artistic simplicity — cultivated by critics at the time as well as by art historians since — informed these political engagements. The manner of painting that came to be known as Fauve style constituted a new form of naturalism based on tactile rather than visual correspondences between pictures and depicted objects. As naturalist pictures, Fauve canvases affected to find (not make) the scenes they portrayed, and to treat their themes as simple artistic discoveries. Fauve painting thereby presented its formulations about land, about gender, about the colonies and about the national heritage as self-evident truths above the contingencies of politics and beyond the vagaries of history. The dissimulation of politics as art in this manner, Herbert’s book proposes, may be a primary political function of the aesthetic of modern painting — a function often replicated rather than explicated by the discipline of art history.

Herbert’s rigorous examination of a handful of Fauve paintings leads him to a broad-ranging investigation of a great number of related contemporary artefacts including polemical political tracts and contentious art-critical writings, tourist postcards and photographs of nudes, travel guidebooks and ethnographic treatises. The book will interest not only art historians and cultural historians of the period, but also scholars involved in the investigation of the politics of representation.”

From the cover: “As the pioneer of a new conception of art, Piero della Francesca (ca. 1420-1492) had a lasting influence on the development of Italian art in the mid-15th century. The glowing colours and spiritual calm of his compositions, and the equally powerful and sublime figures in his pictures form a highlight of Early Renaissance painting, at the same time radiating an astonishingly modern atmosphere. He succeeded as scarcely any other artist before and since in harmonizing his own philosophy of life, characterized by devoutness and spirituality, with the artistic and scientific discoveries of his age. This made Piero one of the most important artists linking the Gothic and Renaissance eras, tradition and the modern age.”

Steam: An Evocative Tribute to the Last Days of Steam Trains by Colin Garratt (£21.00)Publisher: London: Bounty Books — 2006Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight but the last leaf slightly mis-trimmed at the bottom corner. Description: Contains: Colour photographs;

From the cover: “This book is the finest visual tribute to the steam locomotive ever published. Colin Garratt’s text and photography reflects his unique odyssey to document, in pictures and words, the Last Steam Locomotives of the World. With hundreds of matchless photographs, this book vividly portrays real working steam eking out its final moments amid the great landscapes of the world.

No preserved or tourist revival trains appear within these pages for they lie outside the scope of Colin Garratt’s work. The vast majority of locomotives depicted in this book will be, or more likely have been, broken up. This book covers all continents and includes subjects from all the main schools of locomotive design, vividly depicted in every conceivable mood and environment.

The steam locomotive is a sensuous and beautiful creation. It is the one truly living machine and Colin Garratt’s unparalleled photography captures every nuance of its personality. In the course of his expeditions, he has visited some of the remotest places on earth and some of the adventures described in words in this volume are truly breathtaking. He continues to scour the ends of the earth in search of imperilled survivors.”

To him a mountain route is not a mere matter of landmarks or compass bearings; he knows by heart not only the way to take over, any peak one may name, but the time of day to take it, and which end to start at, in order to see landscape and lighting at their best. From the cover: “Throughout England, and particularly on the estates of great country houses such as Stowe, Petworth and Blenheim, are large areas of parkland which embody the ideal of the natural English landscape: pastoral scenes of lakes and streams bordered by softly undulating meadows, with clumps of broad-leaved trees casting their shade on smooth expanses of close-cropped grass. It requires a leap of the imagination to realize that such apparently artless scenes are by no means a happy accident of nature, but are the result of one man’s meticulous planning. Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown created scores of parks for the English gentry and nobility in the late eighteenth century, and his talent for envisaging the ‘great capabilities’ of a piece of land, combined with the age’s passion for the ‘simple charms that genuine Art supplies’ (in the words of his epitaph), brought about a revolution in English garden design. Old fashioned knot gardens and formal parterres, gravel walks and topiary were swept away, and acres of waste land were remodelled with the blithe confidence of a landscape painter. Stiff, formal elements were softened, straight lines eliminated and every trace of geometry banished, to be replaced with meandering walks and streams, serpentine lakes and vistas of gently rolling hills and vales.

After an introduction to eighteenth-century England and gardens before 1750, Roger Turner gives a carefully researched account of Lancelot Brown’s humble origins and rising fortunes, his marriage and his family, the course of his career and the recognition it brought him, culminating in his appointment as Master Gardener to George HI. The creation of a ‘natural’ landscape involved considerable grooming and disciplining of nature: thousands of men were employed to excavate lakes, dam rivers and transplant not only mature trees but also the hills they stood on. Details of the practical and technical aspects of the work, its key characteristics and the plants and trees used, form a background to individual portraits in words and pictures of the finished — and apparently effortlessly beautiful — landscapes. Fifteen of Brown’s major works are described in full and illustrated with original plans, eighteenth-century pictures and modern photographs, showing the gardens’ development over the centuries to maturity. Having discussed Brown’s other works and appraised his astonishingly far-reaching influence, which transformed the English landscape and people’s perception of it, the author provides, finally, a gazetteer of Brown’s works. The information he provides for potential visitors includes, as far as possible, an appraisal of the present condition of each park, drawing attention to the dangers that road construction, agriculture, inappropriate planting and neglect present to these fine landscapes.”

The Oxford Illustrated Literary Guide to Great Britain and Ireland by Compiled & edited by Dorothy Eagle & Hilary Carnell (£16.50)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 1981Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0198691254]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “This reference book is a companion to the literary associations of places from Abbotsford (Sir Walter Scott’s house in the Scottish border country) to Zennor (the Cornish village where D. H. Lawrence and his wife lived in 1916 and 1917). Buildings of all kinds, including some that must be forlornly described as ‘gone’, as well as towns, villages, and districts, are included, and there are cross-references for fictitious names of real places. When the first edition was published in 1977 Robert Nye described it in the Scotsman as ‘a lovely book in which to dip and dream’, a sentiment shared by reviewers and readers all over the world. Many people have written to the editors with suggestions for places or authors to be included, and many have regretted the absence of illustrations.

This new, illustrated edition appears in a larger format, with improved maps and much new material. Writers of recent times, like Gavin Maxwell at Sandaig, A. A. Milne in Ashdown Forest, and J. R. R. Tolkien in Birmingham, have been given more space. Living authors are still excluded, but altogether 58 new places and 44 new authors have been added, bringing the total number of entries on places to 1,232 and authors to 913. The illustrations include portraits of writers, pictures of buildings as they are today and of others that have long since disappeared, landscapes connected with writers and their works, one or two libraries, and an occasional detail from a manuscript.

There is a fascination about places associated with writers that has often prompted readers to become pilgrims’, say the authors. This book will help both armchair pilgrims and travellers, as one reviewer of the first edition put it, ‘to wallow unashamedly in a rich nostalgia for what is called our literary heritage’.”
