Princeton and the Republic, 1768-1822: The Search For a Christian Enlightenment in the Era of Samuel Stanhope Smith by Mark A. Noll (£54.00)Publisher: Princeton University Press — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0691047642]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “Widely viewed during the Revolutionary period as a champion of both republicanism and evangelical Calvinism, the College of New Jersey nonetheless experienced great inner turmoil as its leaders tried to support the stability of the new nation by integrating sound principles of science and faith. Focusing on three presidencies — those of John Witherspoon, Samuel Stanhope Smith, and Ashbel Green — Mark Noll relates the dramatic institutional history of what is now Princeton University, a history closely related to the intellectual development of the early republic. Noll examines in detail the student rebellions and the trustees’ disillusionment with the college, which, despite Wither-spoon’s and Stanhope Smith’s efforts to harmonize traditional Reformed faith with a moderate Scottish enlightenment, led to the establishment of a separate Presbyterian seminary in 1812.

As a cultural and intellectual history of the early United States, this book deepens our understanding of how science, religion, and politics interacted during the period. Close attention is given to the Scottish philosophy of common sense, which Stanhope Smith developed into an educational vision that he hoped would encourage a stable social order.”

Tao Te Ching by Lao Tsu (£52.00)Publisher: Wildwood House — 1982Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0704500078]Condition: Good+. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps which are also a little tanned and soiled. Leaves tanned at the margins. Previous owners inscription to ffep alongside a small sticker.Description: From the cover: “The Tao Te Ching, the esoteric but infinitely practical book written most probably in the sixth century B. C. by Lao Tsu, has been translated more frequently than any work except the Bible. This fresh translation of the ancient Chinese classic offers the essence of each word and makes Lao Tsu’s teaching immediate and alive. The philosophy of Lao Tsu is simple: Accept what is in front of you without wanting the situation to be other than it is. Study the natural order of things and work with it rather than against it, for to cry to change what is only sets up resistance.”Notes: Size: 10¾" x 8½". | pages. The Cuvier-Geoffrey Debate: French Biology in the Decades Before Darwin by Toby A. Appel (£52.00)Publisher: New York & Oxford: Oxford University Press — 1987Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 0195041380]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [4];

From the cover: “For scientists, no event better represents the contest between form and function as the chief organizing principle of life as the debate between Georges Cuvier and Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. This book presents the first comprehensive study of the celebrated French scientific controversy that focused the attention of naturalists in the first decades of the nineteenth century on the conflicting claims of teleology, morphology, and evolution, which ultimately contributed to the making of Darwin’s theory.

This history describes not only the scientific dimensions of the controversy and its impact on individuals and institutions, but also examines the meaning of the debate for culture and society in the years before Darwin.”

Paul Klee: The Nature of Creation, Works 1914-1940 by Robert Kudielka with an essay by Bridget Riley (£36.00)Publisher: Hayward Gallery in association with Lund Humphries — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1853322245]Condition: Very Good+. Description: From the cover: “Paul Klee: The Nature of Creation explores diversity as the mainspring of Klee’s creative practice. Drawing on Klee’s own classifications for his work, along with those of distinguished Klee scholars, this book traces the development of the artist’s rich visual language not as a single line of enquiry but as a series of movements, counter-movements and interconnections.

By the time of his death in 1940, Klee was an acknowledged modern master, his fame and influence both as an artist and a teacher recognized throughout the western world. However, his work lost prominence for

many years from the early 1960s, re-emerging into view only fairly recently. Today, taste and cultural climate appear to have changed and the breadth and significance of Klee’s work is once again heralded.

Featuring an essay by Robert Kudielka, Professor of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at the Universitat der Kiinste, Berlin, along with a personal response to Klee’s work by renowned British artist, Bridget Riley, this book brings to the fore the seminal role Klee had in the development of twentieth-century art and asserts the continuing relevance of his work today.”

Fork to Fork by Monty & Sarah Don (£32.50)Publisher: London: Conran Octopus — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1850299927]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Recipes; Colour photographs;

From the cover: “A love of eating food must include an awareness of how that food is grown, and a love of growing food must include an active interest in how best to cook it. This is the philosophy running through every page of Fork to Fork.

More than just another gardening book, or variation of a cook book, Fork to Fork celebrates the vital link between growing, cooking and eating food. For Monty and Sarah Don, the process of preparing a meal begins with thinking about what seeds to buy. Food is grown and cooked in one continuous process and with one common aim — enjoyment.

This highly original book contains clear and detailed instruction on how to cultivate and cook a wide range of vegetables, herbs and fruits. Firmly rooted in the real experience of the authors and accompanied by photographs that record a year in their own kitchen and kitchen garden, it aims to inspire food lovers to integrate their gardens and kitchens wherever they live and whatever their taste in food, as well as promoting a timely and appealing style of living.”

Making History: Agency, Structure and Change in Social Theory: Agency, Structure and Change in Social Theory by Alex Callinicos (£32.00)Publisher: Cornell University Press — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0801421217]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a small spot to the join of the upper panel. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank and a small address sticker to the pastedown. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: From the cover: “In recent years, the problem of historical change has come to assume central importance among English-speaking social scientists and historians. Much attention has been focused on how we relate institutions and institutional change to actions, and how we think of history as the outcome of this interaction. In Making History, Alex Callinicos takes a fresh look at both Marxist and non-Marxist positions in this debate, giving close attention to theworkofE. J. Hobsbawm, E. P. Thompson, G. A. Cohen, L. Althusser, A. Giddens, J. Elster, and J. Habermas, among others. His main concern is “with the mechanisms through which human beings transform their societies, and, for better or worse, push history onwards”.

Callinicos provides an even-handed and comprehensive synthesis that combines the highly fruitful theories of agency and language elaborated in Anglo-American analytical philosophy, Giddens’s theorization of structuration, and the insights of game theory with the powerful explanatory framework of classical historical materialism. He argues that structural determinism (characteristic of the followers of Althusser), the methodological individualism of the rational-choice Marxists (such as Elster), and the various attempts to reconcile these extremes, are all untenable. In his view, structures do not simply contain or constrain us; they also serve as frameworks that can enable human action. His aim is to demonstrate that human beings possess the power collectively to make history.

Making History is a timely, highly intelligent, and eminently readable book that deserves to be widely read. It will become an important focus for debates on Marxism, theoretical sociology, and philosophy. .”

From the cover: “Lewis here argues that objective value actually exists and that to believe otherwise is to create nonsense. Human beings appreciate values such as beauty and goodness because such things are part of reality. If absolute morality is denied there will not be any progress for mankind as the things that matter most will be explained away. I am very doubtful whether history shows us one example of a man who, having stepped outside traditional morality and attained power, has used that power benevolently..”Notes: Size: 8½" x 5¾". 52 pages. Understanding Object-Oriented Programming Using Java: Updated Edition by Timothy A. Budd (£28.00)Publisher: Addison Wesley — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0201612739]Condition: Very Good+. Upper wrap slightly curled otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: This updated edition of Understanding Object-Oriented Programming with Java develops the object-oriented programming skills of experienced programmers by showing them how to use Java 2, the latest release of Sun's Java platform. Dr. Budd provides a complete understanding of the philosophy behind Java 2 and teaches readers why the Java language works the way it does, unlike many other authors who focus only on how Java works. The book begins by covering the language-independent concepts that are at the heart of the Java world and then moves on to introducing Java through several example programs. This is followed by an in-depth discussion of inheritance and polymorphism. Wisdom Of The Wild: How We Treat Our Planet by Anon. (£26.50)Publisher: Word Wide Fund for Nature — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper very slightly rubbed at the edges. Presentation plate to the first blank.Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “There is no turning back. There never has been in history. Two hundred million American citizens are not going to leave the USA just to give back to the Indians the land that was stolen from them. The Inuit in Greenland are not about to climb into their kayaks to paddle back up the river of history. The wisdom with which “wild” peoples have animated their world cannot be fetched back at will. Nevertheless, there is a great deal to learn. This, for example: how, on the threshold of the third millennium, can we live once again in a finite world without consuming it? Pedagogues tell us that children need elements of the wild and disorder in order to become mentally sound adults. The child in its den is said to be subconsciously remembering the feeling of safety which our ancestors experienced in caves in the childhood of mankind. In Sweden, they let children fly back to the beginnings of humanity on the wings of their imagination, as it were. The wild as a tonic.

Henry David Thoreau’s suggestion that every major city should have some wildness in its vicinity (because otherwise its inhabitants would revert to the wild) is almost one hundred and fifty years old — and highly topical in view of the frustration which people feel in our concrete bunkers.

An end must be put to the dominance of the right angle. Protection programmes for spacious areas of wilderness have one purpose, among others, namely to preserve the charm of untouched nature. Real-life magic! Magic, or rather cheap tricks — that is what our oh-so-en-lightened world thought of the healing knowledge of the jungle Indians for such a long time. Until, at the sight of the burning rain forests, they realised that the best pharmacy in the world was going up in flames.

The awareness of its utility should not be the rescuers’ sole motive, however. If we only take up arms in defence of the earth where our immediate living conditions are threatened, we shall soon be sitting amidst the ruins of a barren planet. It is (unfortunately, some would say) not the case that when the trees die, man also dies immediately. There are no trees in the Mongolian steppes, but they are still not dead. The fact is, as an Indian chief once said: “After the deaths of plants and animals, you will die of the great loneliness in your hearts.” An appeal has been filed against this death sentence. This book contains a few passages from the defence counsel’s speech.”

It is an invitation to ponder, in the largest possible perspective, the weightier, more stubborn problems of human existence. It is an invitation to think — to wonder, to question, to speculate, to reason, even to fantasize — in the eternal search for wisdom. Community Health Nursing: Primary Health Care in Practice by Anne McMurray (£23.00)Publisher: Churchill Livingstone — 1990Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9780443042102]Condition: Very Good. Edges of the text block lightly spotted.Description: From the cover: “Community health nursing is the interface between primary health care and the more traditional, illness-oriented structures of service delivery. It involves empowering the individual to achieve wellness.

In this book, Anne McMurray blends theory with an international perspective to analyse the role, scope, and function of the community health nurse. The political contexts of this increasingly important nursing role and the issue of accountability in practice are also addressed. She encourages the reader to embrace an holistic approach; the emphasis is on the nurse as mediator, educator, and facilitator.

Community Health Nursing: primary health care in practice shows how the goal of culturally sensitive, self-determined health care can be achieved.”

Crime Or Disease? by Antony Flew (£23.00)Publisher: London: Macmillan — 1973Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0333114094]Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heavier tanning to the spine. Edges of the textblock heavily tanned. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. The pages are somewhat tanned, if tight, and a little musty. Description: From the cover: “Professor Flew here attacks the present gross over-extensions of the notion of mental disease on both sides of the Atlantic. He defends human dignity and responsibility against the suggestion that we are all, or most of us, ‘sick, sick, sick’. In particular, he challenges the paternalist pretensions of those who claim a right to push and manipulate people because these people are allegedly sick, and so irresponsible.

A key idea of this book is that, in a typical ordinary disease, it is the patient who complains of the disease rather than someone else who complains about the patient. Taking this as a paradigm, it is preposterous, Flew contends, to say that most homosexuals, for instance, are mentally ill. If an analogy with physical disease is to be the basis for urging that mental disease be similarly excused, this basic supposed analogy must not be forgotten when attempts are made to elucidate the concept of mental disease.

This may seem obvious, but the author is able to cite plentiful evidence to show that many who should know better get into great, and even dangerous, muddles over the nature of mental disease — and this through their failure to consider how what they propose to call mental disease does, and does not, resemble syphilis, measles, etc.

Flew seeks in this study to complement the work of Dr Thomas Szasz, looking as a philosopher at problems which Szasz discusses as a psychiatrist. Part I (Survey of the Logical Geography ) is of particular interest to students of philosophy and politics in that it relates modern discussion of the problem to the Plato of The Republic. It also takes note in this context of Samuel Butler’s Erewhon. The book will also be of direct relevance to students of Social Science (including penology), Social Administration, Philosophy of Education and Psychiatry.”

Following a theoretical introduction, Professor Bendix presents an overview of the foundations of political authority in Japan, Russia, Germany, France, and England, giving special attention to the development of authority in industry. The Imperial Ming tombs: Text and Photos by Ann Paludan (£22.50)Publisher: Hong Kong University Press — 1981Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 962209029X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate ruffling to the dustwrapper. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In the Ming Valley just outside Peking, thirteen of the sixteen emperors of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) lie buried in one of the largest and most splendid Imperial mausolea in the world. Although almost every visitor to Peking is taken to see the Ming Tombs, surprisingly little has been written about them, and only two of the tombs are widely known to foreigners. This excellent contemporary guide to the tombs handsomely illustrated with the author’s own photographs, will awaken both scholars and tourists to the history and monuments of the entire valley.

The book opens with a brief history of the mausolea and accounts of the classical Chinese philosophy of death and geomancy and the traditional principles of Chinese architecture. In descriptions that are marked by a sensitivity not only to architectural and sculptural details but to total surroundings, the author then familiarizes us with each of the tombs and the emperors buried in them. Paludan’s view is an encompassing one, and her observations range from decorative ornament and drainage systems to birdlife and flora.

A map of the Ming Valley is included, along with charts for each tomb showing the current state of walls and buildings.”

The Cambridge Guide provides easy reference to the literature of Great Britain and Ireland, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the West Indies and Nigeria — to every part of the English-speaking world which contributed to the great treasure-house of poetry, fiction, drama, philosophy and satire which is one of the lasting achievements of Western civilization.

The reader will find brief biographies of authors, descriptions of and comments on their major works, and notes on the outstanding characters created by poets, playwrights and novelists. In addition there are essays on The English Language by Barbara M. H. Strang and The Bible in English by C. H. Sisson.

The enquiring reader and student will find articles on a wide range of subjects covering literary forms such as the Metrical Romances, surveying writers with a common theme like the Metaphysical Poets, explaining important religious writings such as the Marprelate pamphlets and historical events, such as the closure of the playhouses, which crucially affected the literature of the time. (Historical figures whose influence on English literature requires recognition — King Alfred, Thomas Cranmer, Sir Walter Raleigh, Benjamin Franklin among them -are also included. )

The book is illustrated with more than 300 carefully selected black and white pictures which bring to life the great literary figures of the past and the age in which they lived.”

From the cover: “As the pioneer of a new conception of art, Piero della Francesca (ca. 1420-1492) had a lasting influence on the development of Italian art in the mid-15th century. The glowing colours and spiritual calm of his compositions, and the equally powerful and sublime figures in his pictures form a highlight of Early Renaissance painting, at the same time radiating an astonishingly modern atmosphere. He succeeded as scarcely any other artist before and since in harmonizing his own philosophy of life, characterized by devoutness and spirituality, with the artistic and scientific discoveries of his age. This made Piero one of the most important artists linking the Gothic and Renaissance eras, tradition and the modern age.”

The Road to Prosperity: An Industrial Policy by Ernest Marples (£19.50)Publisher: Staples Press — 1947Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a triangular tear to the head of the spine, short closed tear to the foot of the same and soiling to the lower panel. Top edge of the text block tanned. Tanning to the blanks and endpapers. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.Description: From the cover: “THE ROAD TO PROSPERITYsays this book, is Industrial Co-partnership, the essential ingredients of which are Joint Consultation, Employee Shareholding and Profit Sharing. There can be no true Co-partnership whenever these three features are not working in effective combination.

The author argues that Co-partnership is the key to production, and therefore to prosperity. He rests this claim on the belief that, though human beings need material incentives to labour, they need also a satisfying spiritual climate in which to perform their labours. This satisfaction cannot be attained unless all concerned, from highest to lowest, feel for their enterprise not only an essential responsibility, but a common pride and pleasure in its success. When all have become partners, sharing the rewards and, within limits, the risks of what they do, a new relationship arises between them and a new sense of their fellowship as men. Thus, in every undertaking, spiritual and material incentives can be made to work in the same direction, and the resulting benefit will accrue not only to man as consumer but to man as man.

The author denies that there is anything Utopian in this, and the body of the book is mainly concerned to show what are the points to be watched in establishing a scheme of Industrial Co-partnership, what dangers must be avoided and what precautions taken. He draws freely on the experience of many concerns which are already operating such schemes successfully, and has reproduced in outline some of the more notable. Nor is he content, like so many, to put his trust in exhortation alone, but, like a practical statesman, suggests a way by which the tax machine can coax both sides of industry into the practice of Co-partnership.

As a politician in a democracy, he seeks also to recommend his ideas politically. They accord, he maintains, with the true philosophy of Conservatism, namely, the spreading of power and property in many independent hands, as against the Socialist philosophy, which is the centralisation of both in the small area of London known genetically as Whitehall.”

The issues which concern them are familiar ones to us. How is morality related to religion? Can there be religion without mythology? Should governments control religion and censor art? Must we choose between authority and chaos? Is art a mere product of fantasy or can it convey truth? Ought it to serve society?
