Celebration of the Somerset and Dorset Railway by Alan Hammond (£28.00)Publisher: Bath: Millstream Books — 2006Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0948975768]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: A limited printing of 2,500 copies of which this is number 1128. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps [1];

From the cover: “Sunday 6th March 1966 was the saddest day in the history of the Somerset & Dorset Railway — the day when the Beeching axe fell and the final passenger trains powered their way over the Mendip Hills and across the Somerset Levels.

Forty years on, there is life again. No fewer than four separate organisations are working hard to preserve all that this cross-country branch stood for. And thanks to the continuing efforts of Alan Hammond to record the memories and images of those who worked on the line, more people than ever have discovered the magic of the S&D. This splendid fifth album of photographs and stories brings alive again what has made the railway so special for so many and provides a most fitting 40th anniversary celebration.

This was truly a family line, both for the many generations of different families who gave their working lives to it and in the spirit of unity which pervaded all its operations. It is that spirit which shines out from the wonderfully evocative photographs in the book.

Nowhere is that spirit of the S&D better displayed than in the accounts of the six young firemen as they learnt the joys and trials of coaxing their locomotives over some of the toughest terrain and in so doing established long-lasting friendships with many a driver.

Forty years on, too, we celebrate England’s great World Cup football triumph and it is fitting that one of the heroes of 1966, Alan Ball, should write the delightful foreword for this Celebration.”

Eyewitness accounts and striking images bring air reconnaissance, aerial bombings and spectacular “dogfights” to life.

TRAILBLAZERS

Adventurous fliers like Lindbergh and Earhart pushed the boundaries even further during the “golden age” of flight in the 1920s and ‘30s. Discover how these trailblazers conquered transatlantic routes and paved the way for new luxury passenger jets.

TRENDSETTERS

Read thrilling accounts of events such as the Hindenburg disaster and the U-2 spy plane crisis, or find out what life was like aboard the Mir space station. Remarkable images of flying boats, airships and space rockets combine with fascinating and detailed profiles of over 300 of the world’s greatest planes to make this an outstanding encyclopaedic record of aviation history. The Wirral by Alan Brack (£20.50)Publisher: Phillimore & Co. — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0850336791]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint with amendments. [First Edition: 1980] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the flap: “The Wirral was already an old-established administrative unit at the time of Domesday Book. This book is concerned with all those aspects of the Wirral, whether of history, architecture or landscape, that give the peninsula its individuality. Well known as a writer on the locality, Alan Brack starts with the immense advantage of having lived there nearly all his life. His book is at once scholarly, readable and entertaining. He has studiously avoided the highly romanticised view which has persisted in other accounts of the area and his opening chapter, ‘A Place Apart’, sets the tone for the whole book. There are sections on Birkenhead and Wallasey and on Bebington and Bromborough. An authoritative account of the establishment of Ellesmere Port is followed by a chapter on the Urbanised Districts of Hoylake, Neston and Heswall, on the Urbanised, Unexpected and Purpose-built villages, on the open spaces and on crossing the Mersey. The description of Port Sunlight, with its vignette of Lord Leverhulme, is especially well-informed. Human interest relieves a generally topographical approach through the appearance in the local context of the many notable men and women who have been associated with the Wirral.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The World Encyclopedia of Locomotives: A Complete Guide to the World's Most Fabulous Locomotives by Colin Garratt (£18.50)Publisher: Lorenz — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1859674550]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Later Printing. Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “Since the birth of the railroads in the early Industrial Age, people across the world have been fascinated by the locomotive as an enduring symbol of the advance of technology and as a powerful means of transport. From the early beginnings of steam power to today’s awe-inspiring high-speed passenger trains, The World Encyclopedia of Locomotives spans nearly two centuries of locomotive development worldwide in an easy-to-use format that will appeal to every railway enthusiast.

Divided into three sections, the book is organized chronologically, documenting developments and innovations in a concise and authoritative text.

Part One — The Birth of the Railways charts the very beginnings of locomotive design up to 1900. Starting with the British locomotives of the 1830s and the Battle of the Gauges, we move on to the early North American freight trains and the great building schools across the world.

Part Two — The Golden Age of Steam details the early British innovations in steam; the American Mikados, Shays, Switchers and Record Breakers; the early Canadian freight trains; European mountain power; and the enduring steam locomotives of India and Latin America — many of which were in use until recently.

Part Three — The 1950s to the Present Day explains the crossover from steam to diesel and electric. It looks at how these changes transformed the locomotive throughout the world into a superior passenger and freight pulling power, making it the supreme form of transport. Bringing us to the present day, this last section highlights the latest developments in world-class locomotive technology, including Europe’s Eurostar and the Japanese bullet train.

Written by world experts in the field and illustrated with over 700 photographs and artwork, The World Encyclopedia of Locomotives is an exhaustive reference work that takes an illuminating glance at a technology that was pivotal in the development of the modern world.”

And how did our industry become so uncompetitive in the first place? Here are the facts and the statistics behind the collapse of British industrial power and influence between the end of the Second World War and the late 1970s, and the subsequent return to apparent health in the Thatcherite years. Views vary widely on the causes of the decline; yet there is a remarkable degree of agreement as to what needs to be done to continue the recovery. Facts and Fallacies: A Book of Definitive Mistakes and Misguided Predictions by Compiled By Chris Morgan & David Langford (£9.50)Publisher: Webb & Bower — 1981Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0906671256]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper with heavier tanning to the flaps. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “Archbishop Ussher’s famous calculation from the scriptures that the Earth was created in 4004 BC is only one of countless sweeping but false statements and hilariously inaccurate predictions made by our ancestors — and by some twentieth-century figures who should have known better. In this collection we find items from the ancient world (Aristotle telling us that birds never urinate because ‘that superfluity which could be converted into urine, is turned into feathers’), from more recent history (a Victorian sexologist proving that twins are born as a result of repeated intercourse, as demonstrated by the urgency and haste with which the second child follows the first into the world) and even the twentieth century (the eminent American astronomer Simon Newcomb admits reluctantly after the Wright Brothers’ flights, that powered aircraft may be built which can carry a pilot, but they will never be able to carry a passenger too).

The various gaffes and lunacies are grouped together under thematic headings, and linked by a witty and perceptive text, but, as we laugh at earlier misconceptions, we are reminded that perhaps we should look more carefully at some of the statements of ‘fact’ which we accept today.”

Heard the story about the First Class air hostess who got fired for sitting on the face of a passenger during a long haul flight? Heard about the amount of knickers and false teeth that are left behind in the body of the plane? Heard how pissed-off stewards put laxatives in your drinks? Heard about the pilot who ran out of runway? Heard of the disabled passengers who miraculously walk again? No? Then you haven’t read Air Babylon. Do you know the best place to have sex on a plane? Do you know how to dress for an upgrade? Do you know that one drink in the air equals three on the ground? Do you know who is checking you in? Who is checking you out? Do you know exactly what happens to your luggage once it leaves your sight? Is it secure? Are you safe? Do you really know anything about the business that you entrust your life to several times a year? Air Babylon is a trawl through the highs, the lows, and the rapid descents of the travel industry. It catalogues the births, the deaths, the drunken brawls, the sexual antics, and the debauchery behind the scenes of the ultimate service industry — where the world is divided into those who wear the uniform and those who don’t…”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 411 pages.
