Maimonides by Abraham Joshua Heschel (£28.00)Publisher: Farrar Straus Giroux — 1982Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Very Good. Top edges of text block spotted. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: He was the preeminent medieval Jewish philosopher and one of the greatest Torah scholars of the Middle Ages. He worked as a rabbi, physician, and philosopher in Spain, Morocco and Egypt. With the contemporary Muslim sage Averroes, he promoted and developed the philosophical tradition of Aristotle. As a result, Maimonides and Averroes would gain a prominent and controversial influence in the West, where Aristotelian thought had been lost for centuries. Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas were notable Western readers of Maimonides. (Source: Wikipedia I’m sorry to say…)Notes: Size: 8½" x 5¾". The Wycliffe Historical Geography Of Bible Lands by Charles F. Pfeiffer & Dr. Howard F. Vos (£20.00)Publisher: Moody Press — 1970Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heavier fading to the spine and fraying starting at the spine ends and corners. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Book shop stamp to the pastedown. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: “A survey of the history and geography of all the Bible lands in one volume is long overdue. Numerous books have been written on Palestine, but few have recognized that such widely separated places as Iran, Egypt, Greece and even Italy also provided a geographical stage on which the biblical drama was enacted. In recent years Bible dictionaries, encyclopaedias and atlases have been published in increasing numbers. Some of these have provided information on all the Bible lands, but their approach has been either topical or very largely geographical.

The writers of the present volume have sought to bring together historical, geographical, biblical and archaeological material on all ten areas of the Near Eastern and Mediterranean world that might properly be called “Bible lands”. Separate chapters deal with Mesopotamia, Egypt, Palestine, Phoenicia, Syria, Biblical Iran, Cyprus, Asia Minor, Greece and Italy.

Drs. Pfeiffer and Vos spent seven years on the planning and writing of this major contribution to biblical scholarship. Both men have travelled extensively in the countries about which they have written. Their work reflects a thorough knowledge of Bible lands, the archaeology and history of the Near East, and the Bible itself on which their work rests.

The Wycliffe Historical Geography of Bible Lands is an invaluable reference and study tool. The wealth of history and geography added to significant information concerning national customs, aspirations, and religious beliefs, the whole presented in a warm, clear, forceful style, makes this volume a significant contribution to an important area of knowledge. An unusually useful and entertaining reference work for pastors, students, schools and libraries, and for laymen who seek a clearer understanding of God’s inspired Word.”

The persistence of the nation of Israel through the centuries, leaderless, landless, fugitive, persecuted, yet always surviving. And often itself producing world-leaders is one of the outstanding phenomena of our modern world. But why only Israel? Why not her kinsfolk and neighbours, the Edomites, Moabites and Ammonites, for example? Born in the reign of Queen Victoria, all have lived as adults through the Depression, the Second World War and the Millennium. But for these men, the Great War was the defining period of their lives. Some of them, mere boys at the outbreak, lied about their ages to join up. They saw action in the trenches, at sea and in the fledgling air services.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". The Times Compact History of the World by Edited by Geoffrey Parker (£12.50)Publisher: Grafton — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0007650809]Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ. Very slightly ruffled edges of DJ.Description: 3d Edition. Illustrated with colour photographs and maps. From the introduction: “This volume attempts to cover the whole story of humankind from its origins, when our ancestors first emerged from the tropical forests of Africa, to the complex, highly articulated world in which we now live. It differs, however, from the original History of the World in three important ways. First, as its name makes clear, it presents the data in a more compact form. Although it includes 80 spreads each contains fewer, simpler maps and (proportionately) more text. Second, every map has been reviewed in order to highlight the salient trends and facts it features. Third, the topics selected for treatment include far more material from the modern period: 24 spreads concentrate on the period since 1914 and no fewer than 17 of them cover the world since 1945.”Notes: Size: 9¾" x 7¾". A state with a unique heritage, its establishment was the culmination of a long arduous struggle for Jewish independence and sovereignty in the ancient land of Israel. From the cover: “What can we really know about Jesus of Nazareth, the founder of Christianity? Two thousand years after his death the answer is that we know a great deal, probably more than has been known about him at any time since he walked the hills of Galilee. This book reflects the BBC’s important documentary series on Jesus. Son Of God reconstructs all we know to date about the historical Jesus, through written sources, archaeology, science, international experts, stylised re-enactments and the ingenuity of computer graphics. Reading this evidence brings this elusive figure out of the shadows and adds unique, fresh insights about his life and times.”

Jesus: The Evidence by Ian Wilson (£10.50)Publisher: London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1984Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0297783254]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Description: Jacket illustration: Detail of sixth-century encaustic icon of Jesus by courtesy of the Monastery of St Catherine, Sinai. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Maps to the endpapers and blanks; Genealogical Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “Jesus Christ is unquestionably the most controversial and influential figure in the history of western civilization. For nearly twenty centuries the religion which bears his name has been a dominant force in the lives of ordinary people. It has played a major part in the political manoeuvrings of their leaders — sometimes honourably, sometimes shamefully — and has been an all-pervading influence in their culture. Today the Christian Church performs a unique role in the life of every western nation: millions are baptized, married and buried under the sign of the cross every year.

Jesus: the Evidence is a compelling, dispassionate appraisal of the facts surrounding the origins of Christianity. Drawing on all the most recent archaeological finds, including non-canonical gospel material, Ian Wilson examines a number of key historical questions. What evidence is there for the accepted story of Jesus’ life and resurrection? To what extent is this story the product of social, cultural and political forces? What do we really know of his teachings? Did hypnosis play a part in his healings? Did Jesus intend that a religion should be founded in his name?

To the committed Christian, the book offers a fascinating new perspective to his or her beliefs. To the sceptic it provides a convincing explanation of why the beliefs centred on this one man have proved so powerful and so pervasive.

Illustrated without recourse to traditional Old Master images, the book reconstructs the Jesus of history using all the available circumstantial evidence — fragments of papyrus manuscripts and gospels, Roman graffiti and the earliest Christian art.

Jesus: the Evidence is the companion book to a major TV documentary series made by the prize-winning team who adapted for television Ian Wilson’s earlier worldwide bestseller The Turin Shroud.”

Previous owners' inscription to the first blank.Description: The Authorized Biography. First in this edition. From the cover: “Hannah Hurnard was an unhappy child — haunted by terror, afflicted with a dreadful stammer and a fear of crowds. School was a torment. Despite a luxurious and aristocratic upbringing Hannah lived in a ‘cold, dark winterland of fear’. The experience of those years would be reflected in ‘Hinds Feet on High Places’. The transformation came in July 1924, when Hannah, aged 19, attended the Keswick Convention. ‘With the decision to follow Jesus came the cleansing fire of the Holy Spirit,’ writes John Wood. The experience led to Bible College, service as a missionary in Israel, and a string of best-sellers. Her masterpiece, ‘Hinds Feet on High Places’, has sold over 1 million copies.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). In The Footsteps of Moses by Moshe Pearlman (£9.50)Publisher: Oliphant — 1976Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0551007575]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Small sticker mark to the upper wrappers, light rubbing to the edges. Heavily faded at the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned.Description: First British Edition. [First Published: NATEEV, 1970] Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “He was born under sentence of death, yet he lived a full span. He grew up amid the luxury of a royal court, yet he threw in his lot with slaves. Protected and pampered by an absolute monarch, he joined the monarch’s most persecuted victims. Trained in the strict tenets of a ritual conservatism, he became a revolutionary. Halting of speech, he uttered words of exalted wisdom. In a world of turmoil and corruption, he put forth an inspired code of ethics for humanity. Taken at birth from his people and his faith, he established their distinctive religion and moulded them into a nation.

This was Moses, the central figure in the struggle of the early Hebrews to escape from bondage and forge their own tradition. The story of his life and the epic chronicle of his people have been retold with rare drama, insight, and scholarship in this volume.

We see Moses as a child and youth, separated from his fellow Hebrews, and we follow his growing involvement with their affairs. Finally, his revelation in the desert sets in motion events leading to the famous freedom trek out of Egypt and to Moses’ emergence as a spiritual and political leader, achieving lofty aims against incredible odds, changing the course of history, and putting his stamp on an entire civilization.

What we know of Moses and of the great personalities of ancient Hebrew culture who followed him is presented in a highly readable manner that is faithful to the Biblical record and the latest archaeological and historical findings. Superb photographs in full colour and black-and-white, taken especially for this volume, illustrate the setting for this moving and remarkable saga.”

The Spring Voyage: The Jerusalem Pilgrimage in 1458 by R. J. [Rosamund Joscelyne] Mitchell (£9.50)Publisher: Readers Union — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat ruffled, several small closed tears, further tears with slight loss and fading to the spine.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “This particular spring voyage took place a long time ago — in 1458. The travellers, two hundred men in all, who assembled in Venice in that year to take ship for Jerusalem, were impelled in general by piety and curiosity. They were pilgrims, and in their 15th century Venetian galley they endured the dangers and discomforts of a great adventure. Among the party were two Englishmen, John Tiptoft, Earl of Worcester, and William Wey, who was writing a guidebook; a Dutchman; several studious Italian gentlemen; and the condottiere Roberta da Sanseverino, who set out as an undercover diplomat. Of these pilgrims, six kept diaries from which Miss Mitchell, an accomplished Italian scholar, has recreated their experiences. To the modern traveller these will seem to possess ardours and trials which would be quite intolerable; but at the same time the simplicity of these men and their deep satisfactions are undeniably and regrettably beyond the reach of most of us today.”Notes: Size: 8¼" x 5¼". Wartime Courage: Stories of Extraordinary Courage by Ordinary People in World War Two by Gordon Brown (£9.50)Publisher: Bloomsbury — 2008Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0747596077]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Leans slightly.Description: From the cover: “In these eleven stories of courage in the Second World War, Prime Minister Gordon Brown pays tribute to the heroism of that great generation of British men and women who took up arms against tyranny and overcame it. Some are accounts of decisive action taken in the searing heat of battle: early in the war Lieutenant Richard Stannard, RNR, showed steely calm and ingenuity during the retreat from Norway in 1940, winning a VC; while on D-Day, Company Sergeant Major Hollis of the Green Howards won his by storming a pillbox alone, paving the way for a crucial advance to higher ground. Other stories tell of great danger faced again and again: Graham Hayes and Geoffrey Appleyard of the Small Scale Raiding Force (forerunner of the SBS) carried out daring and innovative actions over many months off Africa and along the Normandy coast; while John Bridge, a physics teacher turned mine- and bomb-disposal officer, repeatedly practised his nerve-racking skills for six years, always aware that there were no second chances if things went wrong. Behind enemy lines the sangfroid and sheer endurance of clandestine operatives like Major Hugh Seagrim in occupied Burma and Violette Szabo in occupied France showed a daunting, almost mysterious form of courage; and on the home front two railwaymen risked their lives to save a small country town from devastation when their ammunition train caught fire.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5½". From the cover: “An incisive collection of essays on Arab identity, art, and politics that seeks to locate the mezzaterra, or common ground, in an increasingly globalized world.

The twenty-five years’ worth of criticism and commentary collected here have earned Ahdaf Soueif a place among our most prominent Arab intellectuals. Clear-eyed and passionate, and syndicated throughout the world, they are the direct result of Soueif’s own circumstances of being “like hundreds of thousands of others: people with an Arab or a Muslim background doing daily double-takes when faced with their reflection in a western mirror”.

Whether an account of visiting Palestine and entering the Noble Sanctuary for the first time, an interpretation of women who choose to wear the veil, or her post-September 11 reflections, Soueif’s intelligent, fearless, deeply informed essays embody the modern search for identity and community.”

Edie Rutherford, Sheffield housewife and Socialist, who is always arguing with her hairdresser; B Charles, a gay antiques dealer in Edinburgh and a horrific snob. And meet Herbert Brush, London pensioner, active for his age, forever creosoting his garden fence and author of ambitious but appalling poetry. A Candle of Hope: A Journey Through Advent, Christmas and the New Year to Bethlehem by Garth Hewitt (£6.50)Publisher: Bible Reading Fellowship — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1841010413]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Heavily faded at the spine. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers. Pages gently age tanned. Description: First in this, paperback, edition.

From the cover: “As eyes turn to Bethelehem at the millennium, we remember the birth of Jesus in a stable and the haunting promise of peace from the angels.

This book follows the pattern of Advent to Christmas — indeed the three Christmases celebrated in the Holy Land, with the Greek Orthodox celebrations falling on 6 January and the Armenian on 19 January. Then to the New Year and on to the Epiphany, lighting candles as we go and trying to find the way that brings light and that brings hope — particularly in the places of our world currently in darkness, suffering pain, and which are the victims of oppression and injustice. The journey takes us through Old Testament stories that revolve around Bethlehem and this area of Palestine, and then on to encounter the bursting of light into the darkness at Bethlehem in the Gospel story.

With Bible readings, reflections and prayers for each day, we travel with Garth himself, visiting the people and the places of the Holy Land, hearing their stories and finding hope amid the struggles. This book encourages us to make the journey into the new millennium through Bethlehem.”

From the cover: “Although very little is known for certain about Pontius Pilate, the man who crucified Christ, this has not stopped writers in every age from imagining his life. In this extraordinary book, Ann Wroe recounts the lives of all our Pilates — among them the glittering medieval tyrant, devoted to gambling and getting round the law, and the wriggling modern pragmatist, whose dilemma over Jesus has been described by Tony Blair as ‘a timeless parable of political life’. This is also the story of the man Pilate might have been — and the man who mirrors us. Ann Wroe shows how, in his struggles with fate and tree will, Pilate’s story has also become the story of ourselves.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 400 pages. Tutankhamen by Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt (£4.00)Publisher: Penguin — 1972Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0140023518]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Notably rubbed at the outside edges of the cover and spine. Single heavy reading crease to the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned with a light stain to the foot of the leaves.Description: From the cover: “On 25th November, 1922, Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon revealed to an astonished world one of the most fabulous archaeological finds of all time — the tomb of Tutankhamen. The royal burial chamber, standing almost exactly as it was left some 3,300 years ago, was crammed with treasures of both extraordinary beauty and priceless value, dating from the height of Egyptian civilization. It was possible to recapture and publish the iaj details and splendid proportions of the art Egypt when permission was granted, a few years ago, to remove the burial treasures from their museum cases and photograph them under studio lighting with a fast modern colour-reversal process. This volume contains thirty-two of the magnificent photographs taken by F. L. Kenett on that occasion, together with more than a hundred monochrome illustrations. These illustrations support an excellent text by the leading French Egyptologist, Madame Desroches-Noblecourt, in which she describes the discovery of the tomb, its contents, and the light it has shed on the short reign of the boy-king and on Egyptian history and culture in general.”Notes: Size: B Format (7¾" x 5¼"). 222 pages.
