Art Crafts for Amateurs by Fred Miller (£133.00)Publisher: H. Virtue & Co. — 1901Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Good. Gently bruised at head & tail of spine and corners. Leans. Edges of the textblock heavily tanned. Hinge starting at the front pastedown. Text bright and tight. A nice, if fragile, copy.Description: 4pp. Publishers advertisements to the rear. From the introduction: “The author’s aim has been to take the leading art-crafts, and to approach them, from two points of view that of the practice of them and that of scheming for and designing for them. Many useful hints and suggestions of a practical nature can be imparted by a practical worker in writing to those who have made a start, or even to those who are about to begin; while in the matter of design this can be dealt with in a yet more emphatic way by the help of illustrations, and the publishers have allowed the author to be prodigal in this matter, there being no less than 178 in the present work, gathered from many sources, and giving examples of craftsmen of very divergent tendencies.”Notes: Size: 8¼" x 5¾". Naval Camouflage 1914-1945: A Complete Visual Reference by David Williams (£92.00)Publisher: Rochester: Chatham Publishing — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861761546]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Very slight rippling to the last few leaves otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Jacket illustration: The French cruiser, Gloire. . Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “This authoritative history of camouflage is undoubtedly the most comprehensive study of the subject to date. Visual and illustrative in its approach, it concentrates on the British and US navies, but the camouflage patterns of enemy navies (and selected allies) are covered as well.

Contrary to popular belief, naval camouflage at sea was not intended to ‘hide’ ships, and an in-depth commentary explains the theory and development of visual deception, and the different ways in which it was intended to work at sea.

The core of the book is a listing of all the major patterns and schemes, with their colours, characteristics and function. Wherever possible each is illustrated with at least one photograph providing the reader with a visual reference as well as a description; where there were variations, as many as possible are depicted.

This is a subject of immense importance and significance for all those with an interest in the warships of the two World Wars — this comprehensive reference book is simply the best available.”

S. R. Badmin and the English Landscape by Chris Beetles (£79.00)Publisher: London: Collins — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0004120205]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Signed by the author on the half-title page beneath his name — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Black & White Plates; Chronology Tables; Laid in publishers compliment slip and exhibition invitation.

From the cover: “S. R. BADMIN AND THE ENGLISH LANDSCAPE is a celebration and appreciation of one of Britain’s foremost watercolour painters. The work of Stanley Roy Badmin is uniquely familiar and dear to the post-war generation. No other artist has had such consistent popular exposure: for forty years his beautifully detailed and romantic landscapes have graced nature books and travel guides, Puffin Picture Books, the covers of Radio Times and Reader’s Digest, and innumerable greetings cards and calendars.

S. R. BADMIN AND THE ENGLISH LANDSCAPE is an authoritative and long-overdue survey of Badmin’s life and art. The text is lavishly accompanied by a selection of his book illustrations as well as a wealth of his sketches taken from over sixty years of careful work and loving observation of nature.

The text is followed by a catalogue raisonne of Badmin’s etchings, many of them reproduced here for the first time, together with full-colour reproductions of forty-four of Badmin’s best watercolours. The detailed captions to the plates are based on the artist’s own memories, giving a privileged insight into the technique and inspiration for each work. A list of exhibits and book illustrations and a full chronology complete this account of England’s most popular watercolourist.

Badmin teaches us to look again at nature, and share his pleasure in the landscape around us. His countryside is our countryside.”

Flower Paintings from the Apothecaries' Garden: Contemporary Botanical Illustrations from Chelsea Botanical Garden by Andrew Brown (£49.00)Publisher: Woodbridge: Antique Collectors' Club — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1851495037]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper slightly faded at the spine otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains: Colour plates; Colour frontispiece; Illustrated endpapers and blanks; Title page vignette;

From the cover: “This book is a celebration of the work of the first ten years of Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society. The Society, founded in 1995, is a group of artists charged with the task of recording in watercolour paintings the flora of Britain’s second oldest botanic garden, founded in 1673 by the Society of Apothecaries. About 200 paintings by fifty-six artists have been accessed to the Physic Garden archives.

Flower Paintings from the Apothecaries’ Garden contains fifty-six colour reproductions of paintings, one by each artist. The plants depicted range from small alpines to magnificent trees and from food plants to those which yield life-saving drugs, for although the Physic Garden was founded for the teaching of apothecaries, it has always been a garden for the growing of the novel and the exotic. From its founding, throughout the eighteenth and earlier part of the nineteenth centuries, the Physic Garden was an international focal point for botanical endeavour.

Each of the colour plates is accompanied by information about the plant’s uses and, for some, the cultivation history at Chelsea, together with biographical details of the artist.

Also included are a short essay on the role of botanical illustration today, a brief history of the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society and a listing of the complete archive to date, including paintings and ink drawings.”

The Handyman In The Home: In 3 Volumes by Edited by Arthur W. Judge (£40.00)Publisher: Caxton Publishing Company — 1956Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Pages lightly age-tanned otherwise a pleasant set.Description: September Reprint of the 2nd Edition. [First: 1930] Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the preface: “As its title indicates, this work has been prepared expressly for the practical handyman desirous of undertaking a wide variety of jobs connected with the home, garden, garage and small workshop, including not only the domestic repairs and renovations that become necessary from time to time but also useful improvements and additions to the home and its contents. The keen home dweller, with a knowledge of the use of the simple tools and materials described in these volumes, can not only tackle most household repairs and additions expeditiously, but also avoid a good deal of expense. Apart from these considerations, there is always the satisfaction associated with the completion of a job that would otherwise have meant calling in someone else for the purpose. In addition to the extensive range of household repairs, fittings, furniture and other relevant items dealt with in this work, there are also a number of sections, including those on homecrafts, hobbies, sports accessories, outdoor constructions, etc., which will be found both useful and profitable to the handyman and housewife. Since many of the articles in these volumes deal with woodwork repairs and new constructions, it was considered desirable to include a comprehensive section, written by a well-known expert in such matters, on the subject of carpentry and woodworking tools, so that the reader who is not very well acquainted with the use of the latter can improve both his knowledge and experience.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 7". Paul Klee: The Nature of Creation, Works 1914-1940 by Robert Kudielka with an essay by Bridget Riley (£36.00)Publisher: Hayward Gallery in association with Lund Humphries — 2002Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1853322245]Condition: Very Good+. Description: From the cover: “Paul Klee: The Nature of Creation explores diversity as the mainspring of Klee’s creative practice. Drawing on Klee’s own classifications for his work, along with those of distinguished Klee scholars, this book traces the development of the artist’s rich visual language not as a single line of enquiry but as a series of movements, counter-movements and interconnections.

By the time of his death in 1940, Klee was an acknowledged modern master, his fame and influence both as an artist and a teacher recognized throughout the western world. However, his work lost prominence for

many years from the early 1960s, re-emerging into view only fairly recently. Today, taste and cultural climate appear to have changed and the breadth and significance of Klee’s work is once again heralded.

Featuring an essay by Robert Kudielka, Professor of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at the Universitat der Kiinste, Berlin, along with a personal response to Klee’s work by renowned British artist, Bridget Riley, this book brings to the fore the seminal role Klee had in the development of twentieth-century art and asserts the continuing relevance of his work today.”

Shorts Aircraft Since 1900 by C. H. Barnes (revised By Derek N. James) (£36.00)Publisher: London: Putnam Aeronautical Books — 1989Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0851778194]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: 2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1967] Jacket illustration: Keith Woodcock's original painting shows Short Sunderland MR 5 RN273 of No 201 Squadron, RAF, taking off one evening from Sullom Voe, Shetland, in September 1952. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables; Plans;

From the cover: “From the first spherical balloons made by Eustace and Oswald Short, the author traces the brothers’ progress as engineers to the Aero Club till Wilbur Wright’s arrival in France in 1908 and their consequent change-over from balloons to aeroplanes — a decision endorsed by their eldest brother Horace, who joined them to set up the world’s first aircraft production line.

Their rapid expansion as aircraft suppliers to the Royal Navy and their notable progress with deck-launching, folding wings, buoyancy bags and sprung floats led to enormous production of the famous Short Type 184 during World War I, in which period the firm also built rigid airships.

Oswald Short’s pioneering work with a successful series of metal hulled flying-boats is described and their operational histories recorded.

Appendices list all Shorts’ constructors’ numbers, serials and registration marks. The book contains specifications for all Short types and variants, and complete lists to date of type designations and preliminary designs.

For this new edition the section on unbuilt projects has been expanded and the post-1945 story of Rochester’s last days and Northern Ireland’s new industry has been carried down to the present. The Skyvan and Belfast chapters have been up-dated and the 330, Sherpa and 360 have been added to the aircraft coverage, as well as notes on the forthcoming Tucano.”

Interpreting the Figure in Watercolor by Don Andrews (£34.00)Publisher: Watson Guptill Publications — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0823025489]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is slightly pulled at the head of the upper panel and has a light stain to the reverse of the same. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: A Later Printing. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Figure painting is considered by many artists to be the most intriguing subject matter of all. But when forced to paint the figure from a laborious, anatomical point of view; artists often become discouraged. Well-known workshop artist Don Andrews advances the idea that the figure can be approached with the same creative attitude with which artists approach the landscape or still life. His emphasis is not on what you know, but on what you see. As demonstrated by Andrews in this book, the task of the painter is to organize, not report. Not only is this method easier, it results in better paintings as well.

Interpreting the Figure in Watercolor takes on a challenging subject: showing how the figure can be painted creatively and beautifully in watercolor through simplification, interpretation, and shape-making. In explaining how to capture the essence of the human figure, Andrews provides basic information about materials and discusses such techniques as gesture drawing and gesture painting; defining the figure with light and shadow and linking darks and lights for unity; introducing backgrounds; creating visual interest; edge quality; color granulation and temperature; middle value construction of the figure; using whites to “turn on the light”; and working from the model and photographs — but leaves readers free to make their own personal statements, to develop their own “how-to”. By carefully observing, interpreting, and then painting what you see, you can achieve very convincing and appealing likenesses of people.

Andrews’ unique approach to painting the figure is designed to teach artists at every level to overcome the obstacles of figure painting. His accessible style will help watercolorists improve their handling of the medium and rendering of the figure dramatically.”

Korean Music: Its History And Its Performance by Keith Pratt (£34.00)Publisher: London: Faber & Faber; Seoul: Jung Eum Sa Publishing Corporation — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0571100813]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge of the dust wrapper slightly ruffled otherwise a very well presented copy. LACKS THE ORIGINAL BOX & CASSETTE TAPES.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Colour Plates; Musical scores; Maps; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Korean music is one of the most splendid and distinctive of all the great East Asian arts. Varied in form and instrumentation, rich in texture and tone-colour, sophisticated in rhythm and mood, it is still little known in the West, though it is now attracting increasing attention. Keith Pratt, one of the few British scholars to have made an extensive study of it, gives an account of its development over the past fifteen hundred years. He explains the social importance of music and dance in both traditional and modern Korea, and discusses their links with Chinese music and their individual characteristics. At the core of his book is a unique collection of pictures and drawings showing the representation of music in Korean art. We might compare him with Picasso, although it is true that in Picasso’s case we lack the historical perspective. But they have one thing in common: both left their native cultures to break new artistic ground. The first known comment on El Greco’s art is in the earliest existing document referring to him, a letter written in 1570 by the miniaturist Giulio Clovio, which describes the ; artist’s self-portrait as “stupefying all the painters in Rome”.”Notes: Size: 15¼" x 11¼". Jackson Pollock by Kirk Varnedoe with Pepe Karmel (£26.00)Publisher: London: The Tate Gallery — 1999Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1854372769]Condition: Very Good. Lightly pulled at the head of the upper wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Chronological tables; Colour photographs;

From the cover: “Jackson Pollock is widely considered the most challenging and influential American artist of the twentieth century. In his revolutionary paintings of the late 1940s, he dripped or poured paint into complex webs of interlacing lines, rhythmically punctuated by pools of colour. With their all over composition, seemingly total abstraction, and gestural but remarkably controlled handling of paint, these powerful works announced the emergence of Abstract Expressionism.

This sumptuously illustrated book accompanies the major Pollock exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Gallery, London, in 1998-99. The Tate exhibition is the first full survey of Pollock’s work to be shown in Britain in forty years. An essay by Kirk Varnedoe explores Pollock’s life, the mythology that so quickly grew up around him as the prototypical “action painter”, and the critical interpretations of his legacy. It traces the development of his work from European and American models, and discusses his powerful impact on later artists. Pepe Karmel’s innovative study of Hans Namuth’s photographs and films of Pollock at work offers new insight into the genesis of Pollock’s paintings.

Jackson Pollock includes over 200 colour reproductions of paintings, drawings, and prints, including life-sized details and foldouts of major paintings. An illustrated chronology tells the story of the artist’s life.”

Modern French Painters by R. H. Wilenski (£24.50)Publisher: Faber & Faber — 1954Binding: Hardback Condition: Very Good. Boards gently faded and rubbed. Lower board very slightly sprung. Previous owners inscription to ffep. Text bright and tight.Description: 3rd Edition. Blue cloth with gilt on red title plate to the spine. Colour and B&W plates. This book is an attempt to tell the story of modem French painting as developed by the Impressionists and subsequent adventurers in the last seventy-five years in Paris. The story begins, properly speaking, with the foundation of the Salon des Independants in 1884; but it is preceded by a Prologue starting in 1863 when Napoleon III created the Salon des Refuses where Manet’s Dejeuner sur 1’herbe (now an object of respectful veneration in the Louvre) was described as an affront to decency and the work of a vulgar self-advertiser or a man afflicted with disquieting taints; and it continues to the present day though it does not end there, because the stream of modern French painting is still flowing and there must be, as the phrase goes, ‘as good fish in the water as ever came out of it’.Notes: Size: 11" x 7½". 424 pages. Gardening with Shape, Line and Texture: A Plant Design Sourcebook by Linden Hawthorne (£24.00)Publisher: Portland & London: Timber Press — 2013Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9780881928884]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “Gardening with Shape, Line and Texture bridges the gap between garden design books and plant reference encyclopaedias. Leading landscaper Linden Hawthorne looks at plants from a designer’s perspective, where colour is often a secondary consideration, and emphasizes the important roles of plant shape.

Part 1 reviews fine art principles and shows how they can be successfully applied to plant compositions by grouping plants into three heights: ground to knee, knee to navel, and navel to crown. She identifies different plant shapes — buns, mounds, tiers, fountains, uprights — and shows how the use of them contributes to the success of the finished design.

Part 2 is a plant sourcebook with plants listed alphabetically within their key plant shape categories. This innovative plant reference delivers plant information in a form that neatly dovetails with the garden design process and will inspire gardeners to look beyond colour and begin to appreciate the whole plant.”

Oskar Kokoschka 1886-1980 by Richard Calvocoressi & Katharina Schulz (£24.00)Publisher: New York: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation — 1986Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0892070595]Condition: Very Good. Single reading crease to the spine which is lightly knocked at the head, wraps a little age-toned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour plates; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “This volume has been published to accompany the centenary exhibition of Oskar Kokoschka’s work at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, first seen in somewhat different form at the Tate Gallery, London, and the Kunsthaus Zurich. The great individualist of twentieths-century art, Kokoschka in his painting combines elements of Expressionism, Symbolism and the Baroque, resulting in portraits and landscapes characterized by heightened colour, emotional intensity and a strong sense of vitality and movement. Kokoschka is best remembered for his incisive portraits of the Viennese intelligentsia and bourgeoisie painted during the last years of the Habsburg empire, but also for a series of breathtaking views of European cities done mainly in the twenties and thirties. The catalogue has been written by Richard Calvocoressi of the Tate Gallery. With 184 full page colour plates, it is a complete record of the most comprehensive Kokoschka exhibition ever presented in the United States.”

The Eye of Man: Form and Content in Western Painting by Selden Rodman (£24.00)Publisher: New York: Devin-Adair — 1955Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and gubby with rubbing to the spine ends and corners. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Pastedowns and endpapers browned with pencil doodles to the rear pastedown and blank. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “This is the book on modern art that a new generation has been waiting for.

In these pages, inflated artistic reputations are punctured, the heads of revered critics topple, and sacrosanct movements are exposed to the glaring test of their capacity for reflecting and creating life. But, most important, Mr. Rodman describes the achievements and aims of a new group of painters who express human and spiritual values without sacrificing the vital knowledge attained by the great formalists from Cezanne to Matisse.

The Eye of Man argues powerfully for that dynamic, expressive art which avoids the pretentiousness of purely formal painting without content, and which never is debased to the level of mere illustration.

Asserting that our age has carried private painting to extremes that have caused an almost complete lack of communication between artist and public, Selden Rodman passionately affirms the place of recognizable content and spiritual values in painting.

In the course of his argument, Mr. Rodman reassesses Western art from the Byzantines to the present and analyzes from a fresh viewpoint the works of the great pictorial spokesmen for humanity: Giotto, Gruenewald, El Greco, Rembrandt, Goya, Daumier, Van Gogh, Orozco, Rouault, and Shahn — artists whose meaning and vitality have lately suffered from the rewriting of art histories by formalist aestheticians”

Description: Illustrated by way of: Chronological Tables; Colour Plates;

From the cover: “As the pioneer of a new conception of art, Piero della Francesca (ca. 1420-1492) had a lasting influence on the development of Italian art in the mid-15th century. The glowing colours and spiritual calm of his compositions, and the equally powerful and sublime figures in his pictures form a highlight of Early Renaissance painting, at the same time radiating an astonishingly modern atmosphere. He succeeded as scarcely any other artist before and since in harmonizing his own philosophy of life, characterized by devoutness and spirituality, with the artistic and scientific discoveries of his age. Hooker's Finest Fruits: A Selection of Paintings of Fruits by William Hooker (1779-1832) by Frederick A. Roach (£19.00)Publisher: London: The Herbert Press, in association with the Royal Horticultural Society — 1997Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1871569052]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Colour plates;

From the cover: “William Hooker, perhaps the greatest of all fruit illustrators, was both an artist and a gardener. His knowledge of fruits, especially, was remarkable and, in the early nineteenth century, the Horticultural Society of London commissioned him to paint and describe about 150 of the most attractive and interesting varieties then being cultivated. Some of the paintings reappeared in his own engravings, and reproductions in anthologies and calendars have since made many of them world famous. The original paintings are among the most prized possessions of the Royal Horticultural Society, and here for the first time nearly 100 of the best, including a few engravings, have been brought together and published in a single volume. Faithfully reproduced in full colour almost to the original size, they portray with botanical accuracy and great beauty a magnificent assortment of favourite fruits — plums, apples, pears, peaches, strawberries, cherries, mulberries, nectarines and many more. Several varieties are no longer widely cultivated, which adds to the charm, fascination and horticultural importance of Hooker’s exquisite work.

A descriptive text by the botanical scholar and gardener Frederick Roach traces the origins and history of each fruit and discusses its horticulture and influence on modern varieties, and William T. Stearn contributes a stimulating introduction to the life and work of William Hooker.”
