If Your Rhubarb Is Backward, Bend It Forward (Or, the Ill-Tempered Garden) by Benington Marsh (£9.50)Publisher: David & Charles — 1973Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0715359088]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper with the price also clipped. Edges of the boards slightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “There are probably a few people (usually men) for whom a garden is epitomised by a neat array of trees, shrubs and bedding plants, correctly dressed ranks of peas and beans, and an immaculate lawn. They relish the continuous war with undisciplined nature — the endless struggle against weeds, pests and diseases. But men seldom garden before they marry, and they then have to cope with the erratic and outrageously successful plantings of their wives and the depredations of children and dogs. Life is busy, and the garden is there to be lived in rather than maintained as a show-piece.

Here is a book for the gardener who wants a refuge from the pressures of competition and status, and a place where a free rein can be given to individual eccentricities and enthusiasms. It is discursive and practical together, with emphasis on fundamentals rather than on unexplained horticultural rules. Accounts of flowering times and bud formation point to the correct dates for pruning; ‘good drainage’ and how to get it; and adaptation to local climate are just a few of the central themes. For anyone who prefers, or is forced to give in to, an informal style of gardening, here is a relaxed and comforting guide to the particular pitfalls and problems that are bound to arise with this approach. It is written informally too, with infectious enthusiasm, anecdote, and plenty of solid, thought-provoking advice.”

Salad Crops All Year Round by H. G. [Harry George] Witham Fogg (£9.50)Publisher: David & Charles — 1983Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0715384112]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Slight ripple to the text block.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs, drawings & diagrams. From the cover: “The notion that salad vegetables are grown and eaten only in summer has long been discarded. Nowadays the seasons and the range of plants have been greatly extended; and with the help of cloches, frames and a greenhouse there is no reason why tasty salads should not be available all year round.

This useful guide provides the fullest cultural details — from seed sowing to harvest — on a surprisingly wide variety of salad plants. During recent years many raw crops have become popular for salad purposes: root crops can provide an interesting difference, especially in winter; cabbage, beans, cauliflower, even dandelion leaves and nasturtium flowers, can all add crispness and colour.

The author does, of course, give the all-important cucumbers, lettuces and tomatoes comprehensive coverage, explaining in straightforward terms such methods as ring culture, and growing in bags and on straw bales. Through his years of practical experience he is also able to pass on much helpful information on how plants grow, soil preparation, and dealing with pests and diseases, that will enable the gardener to provide the right conditions for active growth at any time of year.

Whether growing for profit, or simply because home produced salads taste best, the home, allotment and even window box gardener will find this book indispensable.”

Tomato and Cucumber Culture by A. A. [Alfred Andrew] Richards (£9.50)Publisher: W. H. & L. Collingridge — 1946Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with soiling to the lower panel. Edges of the textblock heavily tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: Reprint. [First: 1945] Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the preface: “THE information contained in the following pages deals with the practices carried out by the modern grower of today, and applies to anyone desirous of growing either the Tomato or the Cucumber.

Steam sterilisation of the soil, either for propagating or for the open borders, has become a most important operation in the commercial tomato grower’s routine. It is mentioned several times as a means of controlling certain of the soil troubles, and is undoubtedly the surest means. For the amateur and the smaller grower, this method is impossible, and he must resort either to liquid sterilisation or to the complete removal of the infected soil from the glasshouse. To produce satisfactory crops of fruit it is imperative that the soil shall be in a good condition and free from disease.

Dwarf tomatoes are an innovation to many people, but there can be no doubt that they will occupy a very important place in horticulture in the future.”
