The White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov (£64.00)Publisher: London: Collins & Harvill Press — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002619059]Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, without loss although untidy and now tape-reinforced on the verso, with sunning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise bar for small tear at the foot of the last two leaves. Description: From the cover: “The time — 1918. The place — Kiev, capital of the Ukraine, torn by revolution and civil war. The people — the Turbin family of two brothers and a sister, whose home is a calm pool of affection, warmth and humanity in a maelstrom of cold, snow, violence and sudden death. Alexei Turbin, eldest brother and head of the family, is a doctor returned from the war; his sister Elena is married to an unpleasant Baltic German who scuttles away like a rat as soon as danger threatens. The youngest is Nikolka, at seventeen just out of officer-cadet school and a volunteer in one of the scratch units manned by officers which formed the White Guard in the Ukraine. A cuckoo in their nest is their hopeless cousin from Zhitomir, Lariosik, a charming bungler who always says the wrong thing, breaks everything he touches, yet is welcomed into the Turbins’ charmed circle with love and kindness.

At the beginning, the Germans are still occupying Kiev, propping up the feeble regime of the Hetman Skoropadsky. Their cause lost in advance by the Hetman’s ignoble defection, Alexei and Nikolka Turbin and their White Guard officer friends make a brave but futile attempt to resist the capture of Kiev by the adventurer Petlyura and his army of long-moustached, baggy-trousered, trigger-happy Ukrainian roughnecks.

Savage while it lasts, Petlyura’s occupation of Kiev is at least short and as his motley troops slink away, Bulgakov coins an image of power which is the perfect antithesis to the cosy, womb-like interior of the Turbin’s home: on the track outside Kiev, hissing gently, waiting to grind inexorably into the city, stands the huge steel-clad articulated juggernaut of a Bolshevik armoured train.”

The Puritan Gift: Triumph, Collapse and Revival of An American Dream by Kenneth Hopper & William Hopper (£53.00)Publisher: I. B. Tauris & Co. — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1850434190]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Where does the Protestant work ethic come from? And how did America achieve such dominance in management for so long?

The Puritan Gift traces the origins and characteristics of an American managerial culture which, over the course of three centuries, turned a handful of small colonies into the greatest economic and political power on earth. It argues that the energy, social mobility, competitiveness and capacity for innovation, all of which lie at the heart of that culture, have their origins in the discipline and ethos of America’s first wave of European immigrants: the Puritans. Drawing lessons from their own extensive experience, the authors warn that, as America distances itself from the core values which underlay its commercial and economic success during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it puts its own future prosperity and security at risk.

The book also explores how American managerial culture has spread throughout the world. In particular it examines the impact of the US occupation of Japan on the social and manufacturing mores of that country and explains how America’s inherited style of management interacted with Japanese traditions.

This is an original exploration of the dramatic and far-reaching consequences of the Puritans’ ‘gift’ to America — the ethos which produced the early success of America and what came to be known as the American dream.”

The Celtic Church In Somerset With A Chapter On North Devon by H. M. [Henry Maurice] Porter (£28.00)Publisher: Morgan Books — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a couple of short, closed, tears to the top edge. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “This book fills in a part of the great blank in the history of Somerset and North Devon in the two and a half centuries between the end of the Roman occupation and the arrival of the Saxons in the South-West. It does so by giving an account of the Welsh monks who crossed to the south shore of the Bristol Channel and set up churches and monasteries, inspired by their own severely ascetic version of Christianity. This derived, at a couple of removes, from the Christian Fathers of the Egyptian Desert in the early fourth century. These monks, called “Saints", who had an outlook totally different from ours, were tremendous personalities and their biographies are full of marvellous tales.

Glastonbury matters occupy a considerable space. The author thinks that the monastery was founded about A. D. 500 and he deals with the sixth century Celtic saints there, as well as discussing some of the legends objectively.”

In Search of the Maquis: Rural Resistance in Southern France, 1942-1944 by H. R. [Harry Roderick] Kedward (£27.00)Publisher: Oxford: Clarendon Press — 2003Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0198205783]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Maps;

From the cover: “In Search of the Maquis is a study of the maquis in southern France, the Resisters who took to the woods and hills in the struggle against the German Occupation in the Second World War. Edward’s detailed and perceptive account explores what participation in the maquis meant for those involved, both at the time and subsequently. He examines the motivations of the maquisards and how the circumstances of occupation and resistance affected the ways of life of rural communities in the south of France.

This is a rich and original book which achieves a fruitful integration of extensive archival research and oral history. Professor Kedward’s scholarly and readable history allows the voices of individuals to be heard, and offers us important insights into the nature of community and regional tradition. From the many fascinating and moving individual stories emerge a sense of place, a clearer understanding of the maquisard, and an unsentimental assessment of the role of the maquis in French history.”

A Game Called Survival: The Story of Betty di San Marzano and Her Children in Wartime Italy by Ian Reid (£23.00)Publisher: Evans Brothers — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0237455277]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper which is pulled and creased at the foot of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “On 8 September 1943 Italy concluded an Armistice with the Allies and was officially no longer fighting on the side of the Germans. But the wartime troubles of Betty di San Marzano, an Englishwoman married to an Italian and living near Spoleto, and her four children were only just beginning. In danger from both the German forces and revengeful local fascists, they had to leave their home and take refuge in a cramped loft in a tiny hamlet, and live a hand-to-mouth existence with the local peasants. Only to her eldest son could Betty explain the danger they were in: to the other children it must appear to be only a game — a game called survival.

lan Reid follows the fortunes and vicissitudes of the San Marzano family throughout the turbulent events of 1943 and ‘44 and tells of their often amusing, sometimes dangerous adventures helping escaped prisoners-of-war to rejoin the Allied forces, their return home only to flee again to escape the retreating German army, and the part they played in the almost farcical liberation of Spoleto. How Betty managed to keep her family together, and safe, despite the very real difficulties and dangers makes a delightful and heart-warming story.”

Operation Freshman:The Rjukan Heavy Water Raid 1942 by Richard Wiggan (£17.00)Publisher: London: William Kimber & Co., Ltd — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 071830571X]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “On a winter’s night in late 1942 there foundered in the mountains of Southern Norway one of the most vital — if not the most vital — missions of the Second World War. Thirty-four men in two gliders, towed by Halifax bombers, set out to sabotage the heavy water plant at Vemork and so cripple Germany’s efforts to be the first to produce an atomic bomb. Both gliders and one of the Halifaxes crashed. The crew of the bomber died instantly, as did the pilots and co-pilots of the gliders. But there were survivors from the gliders, members of the British 1st Airborne Division, Royal Engineers.

It was the fate of these Royal Engineers that turned this little-known raid, code-named Operation Freshman, into a tale of horror and murder that remained a mystery until British forces returned to Norway at the end of the war. The men died as a direct result of a top secret order just issued by Hitler and, then unknown to the British, aimed at curbing damaging commando raids.

Richard Wiggan tells how Operation Freshman was conceived and planned in a desperate race against time and of the difficulties to be overcome. His in-depth research into the operation included access to war crimes trial records not yet open to the general public. He presents a detailed account which includes Norwegian involvement in Freshman, both in the operation itself and in aiding the survivors. The book also describes the subsequent successful raid on Vemork by Special Operations Executive Norwegian agents.”

The Yellow Scarf: The Story of the Life of Thuggee Sleeman, Or Major-General Sir William Henry Sleeman, K. C. B., 1788-1856, of the Bengal Army and The Indian Political Service by Sir Francis Tuker (£17.00)Publisher: London: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. — 1961Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little fraying to the spine ends and corners. Previous owners' name to the first blank alongside a couple of tape marks. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise, if a little age-tanned. Description: Contains: Black & white plates; Maps [2]; Glossary; Appendices [3];

From the cover: “Murder, organized on a vast scale and claiming several million lives, might sound like the outbreak of atomic war. Instead, it is the record of a religious guild using no weapon more deadly than a yellow scarf. The Thugs of India flourished undetected for centuries, killing their victims by strangulation.

This book is the biography of Major-General Sir William Henry Sleeman, who uncovered Thuggee, fought it for a lifetime, and in wiping it out rendered unique service to his fellow men. Running parallel with this] thrilling tale the disorder and chaos of the Native States in the nineteenth century is revealed. We see that but for the British administration, served by ‘Titans’ like Sleeman, India would have remained for many years a subcontinent of feudal, warring despots and races, lost to nationhood. This biography is a reminder that India awaited the British to set them on the path to independence. Sleeman’s life is one of steadfast courage in the face of almost insuperable difficulties.”

The Rise and Fall of Imperial Japan, 1894-1945 by Edited by S. L. Mayer (£16.00)Publisher: Bison Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0861241428]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges, short closed and tape-reinforced to the spine ends. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: Reprint. [First: 1984 thus, previously published as ‘The Japanese War Machine’ in 1976] Maps to the endpapers. Illustrated with photographs, in colour & black and white. From the cover: “In 1868, Japan emerged from feudalism and civil conflict as a comparatively undeveloped industrial state in an age of European imperialism in East Asia. Within a generation, Japan had risen to the ranks of the foremost industrial and military powers in the Western Pacific. A generation later, Japan had become the paramount power in East Asia, and her naval and air forces spread Japanese power across the Pacific. The formidable weapon built in the name of the Emperor swept across China and Manchuria; her air forces pummelled Pearl Harbor and Darwin; her armies marched to Singapore and the gates of India. Her navies seized some Aleutian islands and strafed the California coast. By 1942 the world had come to know the power of the most devastating force in the Pacific — the Japanese War Machine.

The force and power of the Japanese War Machine is told here by some of the world’s leading experts in guns, tanks, planes, and ships of World War II. The drama of Japan’s seizure of Manchuria, the take-over of the State by the Army, the invasion of China, the simultaneous attack on Malaya, Hawaii, the Philippines and the oil-rich Dutch East Indies is told in all the horror and shock the Japanese invader placed before Western eyes. The fall of Singapore and Hong Kong, the conquest of Burma and Indo-China took place within a hundred days. The flag of the Rising Sun ruled a maritime empire from the Russian border to the gates of Australia, from Burma to Midway.

But the strength of the Japanese War Machine depended on Japanese industrial power, which in the end, was no match for the United States and its Allies. The Japanese soldier, infused with the warrior code of Bushido fought hard and long in New Guinea’s jungles; as the struggle was brought closer to Japan’s home islands, the Japanese soldier fought on tenaciously in the Philippines and on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The air forces began suicide missions, thekamikaze, which drove into Allied aircraft, heroically and fanatically.. .but all too little, too late. The nuclear holocaust, which ended World War II, left a ruined Japan and a wrecked Japanese War Machine.

THE RISE AND FALL OF IMPERIAL JAPAN is the tragic and noble history of a gallant people led into a misguided war. The millions who suffered in Asia and the Pacific in the wake of the Japanese War Machine bear silent tribute to its folly.”

Mao: The Unknown Story by Jung Chang; Jon Halliday; (£15.50)Publisher: Ted Smart — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 9780224071260]Condition: Very Good - in Very Good DJ.Description: Illustrated with B&W photographs. Based on a decade of research, and on interviews with many of Mao's close circle in China who have never talked before - and with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him this is the most authoritative life of Mao ever written. It is full of startling revelations, exploding the myth of the Long March, and showing a completely unknown Mao: he was not driven by idealism or ideology; his intimate and intricate relationship with Stalin went back to the 1920s, ultimately bringing him to power; he welcomed Japanese occupation of much of China; and he schemed, poisoned and blackmailed to get his way. After Mao conquered China in 1949, his secret goal was to dominate the world. In chasing this dream he caused the deaths of 38 million people in the greatest famine in history. In all, well over 70 million Chinese perished under Mao's rule - in peacetime.Notes: Size: 9½" x 6". 814 pages. Tags: mao china communism shanghai

Can Any Mother Help Me? by Jenna Bailey (£14.50)Publisher: Faber & Faber — 2007Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0571233139]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “In 1935, a young woman wrote a letter to the women’s magazine Nursery World:

‘Can any mother help me? I live a very lonely life as I have no near neighbours. I cannot afford to buy a wireless. I adore reading, but with no library am very limited with books … I know it is bad to brood and breed hard thoughts and resentment. Can any reader suggest an occupation that will intrigue me and exclude “thinking” and cost nothing!’

Women from all over the country wrote back expressing similar frustrations. They were full of ideas and opinions but had nowhere to express them. So they decided to start a private magazine.

The Cooperative Correspondence Club -or CCC as it quickly became known — was a place for these women to describe the subjects close to their heart: the pain and elation of childbirth, the difficulties during wartime, or the struggles and comedies of daily routine. None of the women anticipated the way that the magazine would come to play such an important part in their lives.

In Can Any Mother Help Me?Jenna Bailey presents the extraordinary group of wives and mothers whose lives connected through a magazine. Her book is an intimate and moving collection of personal stories and, above all, a portrait of inseparable friendships.”

The Immortals by Derek & Julia Parker (£14.50)Publisher: Barrie & Jenkins — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0214202836]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with light fading to the spine. Private book plate to the reverse of the first blank.Description: From the cover: “Basically a book for the general reader rather than the scholar, The Immortals is intended as a bird’s-eye view of world myth, in which the reader can look at Medusa without being turned to stone, admire Venus without suffering the thunderbolts of Jupiter. It is a safe excursion through perilous but always fascinating Other Worlds.

From the beginning of recorded history man has created immortal beings, and one of the interesting aspects of this occupation has been the way in which the immortals of one country and period of history resemble those of other geographical locations and cultures. The creature known as Puck, for instance, or Robin Goodfellow has similarities with the Pan of the Greeks as well as with the Kobold of Switzerland.

The book relies for its cohesion on these relationships and concentrates on the immortal beings man invented to populate the heavens and hells of their imaginations. Not only the well-known gods — Venus and Osiris and Adonis, Athene and Loki and Balder — but the lesser-known gods of Oceania, of the near and far east, of the Americas, Scandinavia and the Celts will be found here. There are, too, immortal beasts: the dragon and centaur, the minotaur and fearful basilisk, and the ingratiating unicorn. There is a short biography of the Devil himself and a look at the Immortal world of the Undead — Vampires and Witches. The forces of good are represented by the mythical saints, from St Attracta to St Wilgefortis.

And at the centre of the book is a Who’s Who of the world’s immortals, giving an opportunity to compare like with like, unlike with unlike, as the gods man has fashioned in his own handsome, fearful, funny, tragic, image, file past.

The stories surrounding the Immortals are exciting, frightening and often mysterious. The text, therefore, is usually entertaining and often instructive. The illustrations are dazzling and have been collected from archives and photographers all over the world.”

Roman Britain and Early England 55 B.C.-A.D. 871 by Peter Hunter Blair (£14.00)Publisher: Thomas Nelson & Sons — 1963Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Newspaper clipping folded and pasted in against the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Roman Britain was part of a vast, powerful empire; Anglo-Saxon England was politically its own master. The difference is reflected in the written sources. For Roman Britain they are small in bulk, recording matters that primarily concerned not Britain but the empire — its rulers, its military governors and its soldiers. For Anglo-Saxon England, no longer subject to any outside governmental control, they are larger in quantity and more richly varied. Because of this difference in quantity as well as quality, Mr Hunter Blair has turned to other sources of evidence and shown that a rounded narrative of both the Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon periods is possible.

Excavation and aerial photography have won a great deal of new evidence during the last thirty years, and it is chiefly within an archaeological context that the earlier part of this volume rests. Despite the paucity of eye-witness account, the author has presented a comprehensive, fascinating study not only of the military vicissitudes of the Roman occupation but also of provincial government, town and country life, communications and religious beliefs. The picture is reconstructed very largely from inscriptions — a centurion’s tombstone, altars dedicated to Neptune and Ocean by members of a legion anxious to placate the deities of river floods and tides… these are the contemporary, authoritative evidence upon which this absorbing narrative is based.

The later chapters emphasise the interdependence of archaeological and literary evidence in a survey of tie nature of Anglo-Saxon society. The splendid treasure unearthed at Sutton Hoo in 1939 illuminates that great monument of the Anglo-Saxon age, the poem Beowulf, as does the recently excavated site of a royal palace at Old Yeavering. Place-names, too, tell us something about old pagan practices and throw light upon innumerable aspects of life in Anglo-Saxon England.”

The persistence of the nation of Israel through the centuries, leaderless, landless, fugitive, persecuted, yet always surviving. KGB Calling Eve: A Documentary Novel by Einar Sanden (£13.00)Publisher: Boreas Publishing House — 1978Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium.

From the cover: “Irja Parve was born in Tallinn, capital of Estonia, on May 20, 1935. In I960, on graduating from the Institute of Pedagogy, University of Tallinn, where she read modern languages, she was called to see Major Erik Liim, head of the Intourist office in Soviet Estonia.

An important Song Festival was shortly to take place in Tallinn and a Tourist Party was expected from the Free World — the first since the Russian occupation of Estonia in 1940. Irja was offered a post as guide and interpreter. As soon as she accepted the post, however, she found herself in the grip of the Soviet Secret Service — the KGB.

Eighteen months later, Irja married Mark Tarum — an exiled Estonian domiciled in Sweden and a member of this Tourist Party. In the summer of 1962, she joined her husband in Stockholm, becoming the first Estonian to be ‘married off’ to an exile by the KGB.

The following two summers, in 1963 and 1964, she was forced to revisit Tallinn in order to receive fresh instructions from the KGB for espionage work in Sweden. In 1964, the KGB suggested that she should get a divorce and marry a certain retired colonel of the Swedish army.

Juri Remmelgas, one of the most prominent Estonian publicists in the West, has called this book ‘A Handbook for every Western tourist who intends visiting the Soviet Union’.”

The Occupation presents France with a terrible choice that will still divide her long after the Liberation. Janine Simonian’s husband is missing. Günter Mai, German intelligence officer, says he can bring him back — if she will collaborate. Michel Boucher is a petty crook, but he’s willing to join his country’s leaders in their struggle against the enemy — except that they are all collaborating. Maurice Melchior is Jewish, gay, and incapable of going unnoticed. His future looks short and painful — unless he collaborates. Fear, profit, love, power, belief, blackmail, persuasion — the path of collaboration has many starting points. But to those who stay pure in their hatred of the enemy, it can have only one end -death. Jean-Paul Simonian, rescued by his wife’s sacrifice, believes this. Only those who made the right choices at the right times will deserve to live in a liberated France. But choice in face of terror is no simple thing, and loyalty and betrayal are more complex notions than at first they may appear. Even Günter Mai, whose job it is to turn confusion into collaboration, finds his motives blurring as human values outweigh duty to his country.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Great Britons: Twentieth-Century Lives by Harold Oxbury (£10.50)Publisher: The Leisure Circle — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper with a nick to the head of the spine.Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: “GREAT BRITONS is an illustrated biographical dictionary recording the lives of 645 men and women, all of them British subjects, who died between 1915 and 1980 and whose mark on their contemporaries and in their chosen careers has been of exceptional interest and significance. The people represented here come from all walks of life and span more than a century of modern British history; also included are those few ‘black sheep’ whose exploits or failures are too firmly enmeshed in the fabric of the twentieth century to allow their exclusion.

The information is backed by the unrivalled authority of The Dictionary of National Biography, supplemented by unpublished material from DNB files as well as recent biographies and other modern sources. An index arranged by occupation or spheres of interest makes it easy to track down the key figures in any particular field, and a system of cross-referencing within the text reveals a web of relationships and influences that might not otherwise be immediately apparent. More than 200 contemporary photographs, cartoons, and drawings evoke the different moods of the period, put faces to familiar names, and illustrate the work of artists featured in the text.

This is a book for the general reader in search of the immediate British past, for the student and school-leaver too young to remember the characters and events of earlier generations, and for the journalist, speech-writer, and anyone else needing a straightforward, reliable, and readable source of biographical facts..”

The author held extended conversations with individuals of extremely varied background and occupation — activists and theoreticians in the peace movement, the anti-Vietnam movement, and the Civil Rights movement. They include pacifists, peacemakers, war resisters, draft-card burners as well as Negro rights leaders, teachers, clergymen, and artists.

Though some of the participants relate their concern to the established tradition of pacifism and nonviolence, the emphasis throughout is on the immediate and emotional commitment to ideas and acts that now challenge national policy, domestic and foreign.

James Finn’s extensive commentary places these points of view in context, supplies the background of the participants, and points out the significance of a growing phenomenon at a time when this country faces the threat and temptation of other Vietnams.”

Standardized Minds: The High Price of America's Testing Culture and What We Can Do About It by Peter Sacks (£10.50)Publisher: Cambridge: Perseus Books — 1999Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0738202436]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “Standardized testing: it’s an innocuous sounding term, isn’t it? Straightforward, inexpensive, tidy, fair. Americans have grown so accustomed to taking multiple choice tests that we don’t bother to question their legitimacy. We’ve been told time and again that standardized tests aren’t perfect but that they’re the best tool we have to make important decisions about school children, college applicants and prospective employees. Is this really true? What are the flaws of such testing? Why is your father’s occupation a better predictor of SAT scores than virtually any other factor? Whose interests do these tests serve? Why do the gatekeepers of America’s meritocracy emphasize potential over actual accomplishment? And, most importantly, what can we do to more fairly assess ourselves and realistically hold each other accountable to standards at all levels of schools and in the workplace?

Standardized Minds dramatically shows how our unhealthy and enduring obsession with intelligence testing affects us all, from the day we enter kindergarten to when we might apply for a job or seek a new profession. Drawing creative solutions from the headlines and the frontlines, Sacks demonstrates proven alternatives to such testing and details a plan to make the American meritocracy legitimate and fair.”

In its diplomatic isolation 16 million people have ceased to exist on paper, although they have about the same amount of foreign trade as the 800 million other Chinese of the Communist mainland; their living standards are four times as high in GNP terms. Taiwan’s transformation from the poor agriculturally based island which Japan handed back to China in 1945 to the dynamic major trading nation of today merits study by all concerned about the developing countries of the Third World.”Notes: Size: 8½" x 6". From the cover: “Edinburgh and South-East Scotland is a splendid introduction to a rich area tor the archaeologist. Graham and Anna Ritchie have covered south-east Scotland from the Cheviots in the south to Stirling and Fife in the north. They begin with the hunters and gatherers 5000 years B. C. and follow man’s development in this region through the first farmers and metal workers to the fort builders and iron workers of the first centuries A. D. There is a concise treatment of the Roman occupation of the area and the book concludes with a new study of the early archaeology of Edinburgh. The authors provide a gazetteer of sites as well as guides to museums and to further reading. The clear text and the many photographs and drawings make this a particularly attractive handbook for the amateur archaeologist.”

Lady Into Cook by Katherine Curragh (£9.50)Publisher: Cressett Press — 1957Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Good. Boards a little rubbed at the extremities, notably so at the joints of the spine and boards. Leans slightly. Mildly bumped at head & tail of spine and corners.Description: From the introduction: “At all times amongst the uninhibited aristocracy — and at most times throughout leisured society in general — it has been fashionable to display an educated discrimination in the choice of Food, but it is I think peculiar to the present time that the practice of Cookery should have become as proper a subject for cultured conversation as politics, art, or contemporary scandal. It is of course largely the war which we must thank for this admirable phenomenon. The contriving of meals then became for everyone a matter of constant concern, and the simultaneous absence of domestic labour enabled our leisured class to get its feet in the kitchen door — a position from which it now seems unwilling to retreat.

But while cooking has thus gained immensely in prestige among our social and intellectual aristocracy, it seems lately to show signs of disappearing altogether from the numerically greater though less select circles of the population.

This is because of The Packet. In the last few years the shelves of our lesser grocers have become stocked with regiments of small boxes and tasteful packets whose contents — with the addition of a little tap water — will produce not only jellies and cold white shapes, but cakes, puddings, pies, tarts, cream, etc., which are claimed by their producers to be edible. And indeed, although it is perhaps too soon to judge of their eventual effects, many of these horrible mixtures do appear to cause no immediate illness. Thus it is happening that for every lady who experiences the pleasant metamorphosis into cook, at least ten potentially worthy cooks, seduced by The Packet, are being deprived of everything but the uninteresting if lady-like occupation of undoing dainty parcels and wetting the contents.”

Long Road to Freedom: The Story of Her Life under German Occupation by Ginette Spanier (£9.50)Publisher: Robert Hale — 1976Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0709155921]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper with a short closed tear to the head of the upper panel.Description: Reprint. [First: Same Year] From the cover: “In his foreword to Ginette Spanier’s first book, It Isn’t All Mink, Noel Coward wrote about the manuscript of Long Road to Freedom, which he had just read… it dealt exclusively with the war years, and the general experiences of Ginette and her husband Paul-Emile Seidmann, both of them Jewish, amid the mounting horrors and perils of German occupation. This intimate, virtually day-to-day account of their hunted and haunted lives during that ghastly time was, to me when I first read it, infinitely moving. Simply and lucidly written, it conveyed, what so many excellent books about the occupation failed to convey, the small, almost monotonous details of ‘life on the run’. There was little actual melodrama in it. Admittedly these two gentle, intelligent people missed capture several times by a hair’s breadth, but the emphasis on this was light. What was important were the daily chores, the washing of clothes, the scavenging for food, the furtive listening to the B.B.C. broadcasts on the radio with the bath-water running to drown the sound and, above all, the abiding terror, not only of being arrested themselves but of implicating those who had hidden and helped them. The end of the story was when they bicycled in heavy rain across the American lines and realised beyond all doubt that their desperate Odyssey was over and that they were free again.”Notes: Size: 8¾" x 5¾".
