French Aircraft 1939-42: Fighters, Bombers, Reconnaissance and Observation Types by Dominique Breffort (£151.00)Publisher: Paris: Histoire & Collections — 2011Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 2352501970]Condition: Near Fine. Slightest rubbing to the tips of the wrappers otherwise a very well presented copy of an uncommon title. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Drawings; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “Contrary to what was long believed and asserted, French Armée de I’Air was not crushed on the first day of the German attack, on 10 May 1940. For aircraft, France did have — and a lot! — and in particular it did have pilots who fought, who even fought very bravely, especially if you take into account the equipment they were using, that subtle blend of out-of-date and therefore vulnerable machines and new, modern aircraft with all their teething troubles which not always corrected. This book, which is actually the reissue, very substantially increased, of volumes 7 and 8 of the Planes & Pilots series bearing the same title and published by Histoire & Collections in 2004-2005, provides a comprehensive overview of military aircraft of the crucial period in the history of the Armée de I’Air extending from the beginning of World War II to the dissolution of the aviation of the Vichy regime. From Amiot to Potez, all fighters, bombers, reconnaissance and observation planes used by the Armée de I’Air between 1939 and 1942, produced in France or purchased abroad, are presented by alphabetical order, supplemented by an overview presentation of the main prototypes built and flying before the end of hostilities but which circumstances prevented from being produced in series, even though this was planned and indeed sometimes already started.”

S. R. Badmin and the English Landscape by Chris Beetles (£79.00)Publisher: London: Collins — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0004120205]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Signed by the author on the half-title page beneath his name — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Black & White Plates; Chronology Tables; Laid in publishers compliment slip and exhibition invitation.

From the cover: “S. R. BADMIN AND THE ENGLISH LANDSCAPE is a celebration and appreciation of one of Britain’s foremost watercolour painters. The work of Stanley Roy Badmin is uniquely familiar and dear to the post-war generation. No other artist has had such consistent popular exposure: for forty years his beautifully detailed and romantic landscapes have graced nature books and travel guides, Puffin Picture Books, the covers of Radio Times and Reader’s Digest, and innumerable greetings cards and calendars.

S. R. BADMIN AND THE ENGLISH LANDSCAPE is an authoritative and long-overdue survey of Badmin’s life and art. The text is lavishly accompanied by a selection of his book illustrations as well as a wealth of his sketches taken from over sixty years of careful work and loving observation of nature.

The text is followed by a catalogue raisonne of Badmin’s etchings, many of them reproduced here for the first time, together with full-colour reproductions of forty-four of Badmin’s best watercolours. The detailed captions to the plates are based on the artist’s own memories, giving a privileged insight into the technique and inspiration for each work. A list of exhibits and book illustrations and a full chronology complete this account of England’s most popular watercolourist.

Badmin teaches us to look again at nature, and share his pleasure in the landscape around us. His countryside is our countryside.”

Good Food to Fight Migraine by Hilda Cherry Hills (£54.00)Publisher: Roberts Publications — 1979Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0906185092]Condition: Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wraps. Small mark to the upper wrap. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the introduction: “Since one in every five families throughout the world will have an inherited migraine problem which will be most probably related to a family history of asthma, hay fever, eczema, epilepsy, coeliac disease, urticaria, schizophrenia — all of which can be related to food sensitivity, one can only feel the deepest gratitude to Mrs. Cherry Hills for her authoritative expertise in producing such an invaluable guide to happy eating for the vast numbers of migraine sufferers. Her book represents a unique and historical contribution to the alleviation of migraine attacks for those millions of victims who have the determination and pain-induced motivation to seek a simple and commonsense means of reducing their episodes of agonising prostration which so few employers, partners or relatives even begin to understand. Modern science, it seems, is quite unable at this stage to guarantee the control of every devastating migraine attack, but the simple observation of Mrs. Hills’s suggestions in this excellent treatise will add years of attack-free days for all who follow her inspired advice.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by P. Twentieth Century Industrial Archaeology by Michael Stratton & Barrie Trinder (£44.00)Publisher: London: E & FN Spon — 2000Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0419246800]Condition: Near Fine. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: “This book offers a new view of twentieth century Britain. At one level it is a guidebook to the artefacts, the buildings and the landscapes that have shaped our civilisation of the past hundred years. In the tradition of landscape history established by W. G. Hoskins and Maurice Beresford, the authors offer journeys along by-passes, amongst the mounds where ordinance factories once stood, through industrial estates and garden suburbs, and to chemical manufacturing complexes where the public rarely venture. This book identifies the places which have shaped modern industrial Britain, the twentieth century equivalents of Cromford, Ironbridge, Blaenavon and New Lanark, and shows how the observation of subtle features in the landscape can illuminate the recent history of almost any town or stretch of countryside. Landscapes are re-populated and re-animated through the skilful use of reminiscences and observations, and by drawing on process recording by professional archaeologists, and throughout the book there is an awareness of the links between places where goods were produced and the museums where they are now displayed.

The book also shows how the archaeological record raises questions about some of the major issues of twentieth century British history, the production of munitions in two world wars, the booms in house building of the inter-war period and of the years between 1953 and 1973, the nature of coal-mining communities, and the take-up of scientific and technological innovations.”

Death on Hell Ships: Prisoners at Sea in the Pacific War by Gregory F. Michno (£33.00)Publisher: Leo Cooper — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0850528216]Condition: Near Fine - in Near Fine DJ. Two very slight marks to ffep otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: Can a story of the hellships be written? No, according to Preston Hubbard, former prisoner and retired history professor at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. Hubbard believes the unrelenting horror of the hellships does not lend itself to a book. Novels or movies need points of contrast, moments of relief, different viewpoints. The hellships, says Hubbard, have no contrasts. Their damned, dark world lies buried beyond the reach of imagination or memory. It was a world unrelieved by humour, light, setting, or routine. Such a story, he claims, would collapse into itself like a black hole, shedding no light and yielding no understanding. Indeed, the hellships may represent a kind of depravity, a supreme form of evil beyond the scope of history (Hubbard, Apocalypse Undone, 164). Although Hubbard's observation may be valid when it comes to the creation of a painting, movie, or novel, fortunately (or unfortunately, as the case may be), this is not a novel. Truth does not always follow the dictums of art. Illustrated with B&W photographs. 366pp. Index. Size: 8vo Medium (8" x 5½" approx.)Tags: Gregory Michno 0850528216

Sharks Among Minnows: Germany's First Fighter Pilots and the Fokker Eindecker Period, July 1915 to September 1916 by Norman Franks (£19.50)Publisher: London: Grub Street — 2001Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1902304926]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Appendices [4]; Black & White Photographs; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: “In early 1915, with the world war in its infancy, the attention of Allied and German air strategists was focussed on trying to stop each other making reconnaissances and artillery observation sorties over the lines. Various ingenious schemes met with limited success, then suddenly in the summer of 1915 there was a breakthrough for the Germans — the arrival at the front of the Fokker Eindecker.

Its advantage was the synchronised machine gun firing through the whirling blades of the propeller — a revolution in contemporary air fighting. Those German pilots disposed to flying these first single-seat aeroplanes, if successful, soon became famous and the first aces. Names such as Boelcke, Immelmann, Wintgens, Parschau, Mulzer, Hohndorf, Frankl and von Althaus quickly became the first heroes to the German public and the first winners of the coveted Pour le Merits — the famed Blue Max.

These men and others caused havoc amongst British and French airmen over the Western Front for just over a year, something history has called the ‘Fokker Scourge’. Although comparatively small in numbers, they were deadly when attacking lightly armed, almost defenceless British and French aeroplanes; truly ‘sharks among minnows’.

Norman Franks has covered this period in detail, bringing to light new information and insights, and explaining how these early German fighter pilots achieved their kills, who they shot down, when and where. Contains many rare and previously unpublished photos.”

Wildfowlers and Poachers: Fifty Years on the East Coast by Arthur Henry Patterson (£19.50)Publisher: Ashford Press Publishing — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 1852530219]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper slightly sunned at the spine otherwise a very well presented copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “First published in 1929, Wildfowlers and Poachers drew on 50 years of loving and shrewd observation by Arthur Patterson of his native Norfolk. ‘John Knowlittle’, as he was known widely in his lifetime, was an enthusiastic naturalist and a popular, sociable local character around Yarmouth, who captured in his writing both the wildlife and the human lives of the area.

In this his ninth book, he depicts the lives and activities of the wildfowlers who were a common sight in the Norfolk estuary before swamp drainage and Wild Birds Protection Acts removed their livelihood. He also chronicles the changes seen in the 50 years which span the turn of the century such as the appointment of wardens to ensure observation of the Close Seasons Acts. Some of his most entertaining passages describe the war between the gunners and the ‘Watcher’.

A generation long past and a countryside long lost, is brought to life again here through John Knowlittle’s vivid, shrewd and affectionate portraits.”

The Audubon Society Book of Water Birds by Les Lines, Kimball L. Garrett & Kenn Kaufman (£18.50)Publisher: Harry N. Abrams — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 081091863]Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper which is unevenly faded on both panel. Loss to the last few leaves at the bottom corner not affecting the text. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Illustrated with colour photographs. From the cover: “The world of water birds is rich and varied, filled with striking examples of nature’s ingenuity. With 211 colour photographs taken by skilled professionals, and a lively text based on years of observation and study, this book — the eighth in the Audubon Society series — invites you into an endlessly fascinating realm. Travel the earth from pole to pole — along inland waterways and marshes, over shorelines and islands, and on the open sea — to marvel at how nature has matched form and function for hundreds of species. Observe the elegant courtship ceremony of Japanese Cranes, and, in comic contrast, the awkward prenuptial antics of the Blue-footed Boobies of the Galapagos. Watch a Pel’s Fishing Owl snatch its prey from a moonlit stream in Botswana. See how a pair of Western Grebes dance across a prairie lake in Canada, how penguins patiently tend their young in their snowbound Antarctic homes, and how sandpipers divide the spoils along the shoreline by probing the mud with bills of different lengths.

Presented in chapters according to lifestyles and habitats, these birds range from those that swim and dive, to those that soar, and to those that live along the water’s edge. In one chapter we learn that some have specialized equipment for catching fish—hook-tipped bills, spears, and netlike pouches. In another we discover the auks — the "penguins" of the northern hemisphere — nesting in wave-lashed sea cliffs. Here, too, are the secretive rails and gaudy gallinules and jacanas, stalkers of dense marshes, and the bejewelled kingfishers, known for their lightning dives after fish. Containing both a text that includes the most recent scientific discoveries and the latest achievements in nature photography, this volume is a breakthrough in the field of illustrated books on birds. The Audubon Society Book Of Water Birds is more than a contribution to science: It is a celebration of the drama, mystery, variety, and beauty of nature.”

Because, as Peter Drucker once said, everything you learned is wrong — at best, it is misleading and insufficient. You typically learn in school, workshops, and seminars that if you can manage the work and serve the people, you have what it takes. It's not true. Maybe you have enough stuff to be a pretty good manager, but it takes a lot more to be a good leader. The Wizard and the Warrior gives leaders the insight and courage they need to take risks on behalf of values they cherish and the people they guide. Arabian Nights: The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night Selected by Antony Atha from the Illustrated Benares Edition by Richard F. Burton (£14.00)Publisher: London: Bracken Books — 1985Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0946495246]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings [16];

From the cover: “To celebrate the centenary of the publication of the first volume of Sir Richard Burton’s famous 17 volume translation of the Arabian Nights in 1885, this edition is the first of two volumes collecting together over 70 of the best known tales.

The origins of the Arabian Nights are lost in antiquity. First translated into a European language by the Frenchman Antoine Galland in the 18th century, many of the characters in the stories have become household names. Versions of Aladdin and his Lamp and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves appear in countless children’s books and are performed as pantomimes every Christmas, and the same is true of many others. But the simple fairytale element of the Arabian Nights can be exaggerated. As Burton himself said ‘viewed as a whole they are a drama of Eastern life, and a Dance of Death made sublime by faith and the highest emotions, by the certainty of expiation and the fullness of atoning equity. They form a phantasmagoria in which angels and archangels, devils and goblins, men of air, of fire, of water, naturally mingle with men of earth… All the splendour and squalor, the beauty and baseness, the glamour and grotesqueness… of Oriental life are here: it pictures the three great Arab passions, love, war and fancy; and still more, by adding Fiction to Fact the genius of the storyteller quickens the dry bones of history and revives the dead past. Truly they form one of the monuments of world literature.

To preserve the chronology of the original the stories in this edition are printed virtually in the order in which they first appeared. This first volume therefore contains that classic romp The Porter and the Three Ladies of Baghdad, the famous Hunchback’s Tale, the marvellous Voyages of Sindbad the Sailor, and that great favourite Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. In the second volume it is planned to include all the stories made famous by Galland — in particular Aladdin and his Lamp — which came in the seven Supplemental volumes in the original translation.

Throughout, the original unexpurgated version privately printed by the Burton Club has been used. This translation is marked by the extraordinary resource and felicity of expression that Burton commanded and for the last hundred years has remained the benchmark against which all other translations are measured. The anthropological notes embrace a wide field of erotic reference and abound in valuable observations based on Burton’s lifelong study and observation of the peoples of the East.

This commemorative centenary issue is illustrated with a selection of the paintings of Albert Letchford commissioned by the publisher H. S. Nichols for the first library edition. Letchford was a close friend of Sir Richard and Lady Burton, and one to whom, on the night of his death, Sir Richard presented his personal copy of The Thousand Nights and a Night. It seems therefore only fitting that these illustrations should illuminate the pages of a work which has done so much to bring to life ‘the splendour and squalor, the beauty and baseness, the glamour and grotesqueness’ of Oriental life.”

Counter-Intuitive Marketing by Kevin J. Clancy; Peter C. Krieg; (£13.00)Publisher: Free Press — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0684855550]Condition: Near Fine - in Very Good DJ. Very slightly ruffled edges of DJ.Description: How Great Results Come from Uncommon Sense. From the flap: “The authors trace the high rate of business failure back to bad marketing strategy, and the even worse implementation of that strategy. Excess testosterone, they argue, compels senior managers to make decisions intuitively, instinctively, quickly, and, unfortunately, disastrously. In this informative and enlightening book, Clancy and Krieg confront these “over-and-over again” marketers, who don’t have time to do it right the first time, but endless time and a company bankroll to do it wrong over and over again. The authors draw from their decades of consumer and business-to-business marketing experience to business-to-business marketing experience to describe the intuitive decision-making practices that permeate business today, and demonstrate how these practices lead to disappointing performance.”Notes: Size: 9½" x 6¼". Human Nature: Fact and Fiction by Edited by Robin Headlam Wells & Johnjoe McFadden (£11.50)Publisher: Continuum — 2006Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0826485464]Condition: Near Fine.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “What do we mean by ‘human nature’? Is there a genetically determined core of humanity that unites us all as members of a single species? Or is the thing we call human nature a social construct? And how do we explain the mystery of human creativity? Do great writers have an intuitive grasp of what makes human beings tick, or are they merely the mouthpiece of contemporary culture? It has been claimed that ‘the greatest enterprise of the mind has always been and always will be the attempted linkage of the sciences and humanities’ (Edward O. Wilson). This ground-breaking book marks the beginning of a new dialogue between the two. Rather than focusing on the division between what C.P. Snow called ‘the two cultures’, it shows that the sciences and humanities have much to learn from each other. Points of disagreement remain. Yet there is in this volume a genuine attempt to bridge the gulf that has traditionally separated the sciences and humanities and to reach a better understanding of what it means to be human. Human Nature — Fact and Fiction is a major new contribution to the debate on human nature, set to be required reading for anyone with a background in either the arts or the sciences who is interested in understanding what defines us as human beings — in what we are, and why.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by A. In A Fugitive Season: A Sequence of Poems by Robert Dana (£11.50)Publisher: The Ohio University Press — 1980Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0804008043]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine and onto the margins of the panels. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight.Description: From the cover: “In a Fugitive Season is the long-awaited sixth volume of poetry by Robert Dana.

The poems in this collection are arranged in a sequence which explores the intensities, confusions, sudden insights brought on by the conflicts of passion and the pain of consciousness. The sequence forms a kind of love story, a tragi-comedy which plays itself out against a real world of power, poverty, and politics. While not so tightly bound to one another that they cannot be read separately, these poems nevertheless form an interwoven whole with recurrent figures and motifs.

In this volume, Dana shows that at the heart of all meaning is silence. The poems emerge from that silence, they struggle to create themselves, to overcome the reticence of meaning. Sometimes the language twists into grotesqueness or obscurity. At other times, it breaks into new formalities of speech, giving off fresh light.

In these poems, Robert Dana once again displays his mastery of language and imagery, his acuteness of observation and richness of invention, a precision and fullness of line, and an ear for music, that are breath-takingly fine.”

Great Railway Journeys of the World by Miles Kington, Brian Thompson, Michael Palin, Michael Wood, Eric Robson, Ludovic Kennedy, Michael Frayn & Dennis Marks (£10.50)Publisher: British Broadcasting Corporation [B.B.C./BBC] — 1981Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: B0047X16RC]Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper with a closed, but untidy, slit to the leading edge of the top corner of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: “Long train journeys give the traveller time for observation and reflection. In Great Railway Journeys of the World, seven distinguished writers and presenters each take a different journey and give an original and dramatic perspective on the modern world.

First, Brian Thompson travels leisurely through southern India, from the noise and heat of Bombay to the calm of Cochin via Bangalore and Ootacamund. Michael Wood goes north from Cape Town on the Blue Train, the most luxurious train in the world, and then through spectacular scenery to the Victoria Falls. His journey is a unique and compelling portrait of modern southern Africa. Michael Frayn’s journey across Australia includes rides on the legendary Ghan into Alice Springs, and a three hundred-mile trip across the Nullarbor Plain on the longest straight railway line in the world.

Ludovic Kennedy crosses the United States by the historical overland route — from . New York to Chicago on the Broadway Limited, and then, in the tracks of Robert Louis Stevenson, he takes the San Francisco Zephyr via Denver and Promontory Point. The journey ends in Los Angeles. Miles Kington travels through South America from Lima to La Paz, crossing the highest railroad in the world — 60 tunnels, 45 bridges, and zigzagging all the way up to 15,000 feet in the Peruvian Andes. Later he unexpectedly encounters a Bolivian revolution in the wayside town of Viacha. As a boy, Michael Palin (of Monty Python fame) spent hours on Sheffield’s Midland Station train-spotting. In his great railway journey, he fulfils a dream and travels from London to the Kyle of Lochalsh on the west coast of Scotland, a route steeped in railway history. Finally, Eric Robson meanders through France, rides rack-and-pinion up and down the mountain railways of Switzerland and goes on to Vienna and through the Iron Curtain to Budapest.

Planet Ustinov: Following the Equator with Sir Peter Ustinov by Michael Waldman (£10.50)Publisher: Simon & Schuster — 1998Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0684819759]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper.Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “One hundred years ago humorist and storyteller Mark Twain travelled the world. Zig zagging sedately along the Equator he dropped anchor in Hawaii and Fiji, Australia and New Zealand; in India, Mauritius and South Africa. He encountered a world painted red, a British Empire upon which the sun never set.

Now, a hundred years later, Sir Peter Ustinov has travelled in Twain’s wake, finding a very different world. In Hawaii and Mauritius, they are trying to reclaim and validate their native languages. From Australia, dispossessed Aborigines travel the world in search of mummified, desecrated ancestors. The Maoris bare their bottoms at the Queen’s entourage; and in South Africa there has been the greatest upheaval of all.

Travelling through the vivid landscapes of some of the world’s most beautiful countries, Sir Peter encountered extraordinary people along the way, ranging from the King of Abemama, a tiny island in the South Pacific, to Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Throughout, Sir Peter shared his unique and sometimes humorous observations with TV producer Michael Waldman, during the filming of their epic journey for Channel 4.

Mixing history with acute observation of people, places and customs, Michael Waldman has written a witty, shrewd and evocative account of a world in transition on the brink of a new millennium.”

Put the Knife in Gently: Memoirs of a Life with Legends by Donald Zec (£10.50)Publisher: London: Robson Books — 2003Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 1861056974]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: “Kirk Douglas once implored Donald Zee to ‘put the knife in gently’ — a variant on Hollywood’s dictum: ‘I don’t care what you say, just spell the name right’. Donald Zee’s celebrated entertainment column appeared in the Daily Mirror for more than twenty years and he spent much of that time in Hollywood. He developed close friendships with many of the celebrities of the fifties, sixties and seventies and became one of the few journalists they trusted.

Put the Knife in Gently is a witty and revealing look at Zee’s experiences with Hollywood’s legends. Sailing with Humphrey Bogart on his yacht the Santana; encountering Gary Grant in his hotel room as he washed his dainty ladies’ smalls (a traveller’s tip, not a fetish); having coffee with Marilyn Monroe at her apartment; experiencing the spectacle of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in full flow; joining John and Yoko on the bed during their honeymoon protest — all this and much more is recounted with humour, insight and affection.

Zee’s sharp observation penetrates the hype upon which Hollywood is built and lays bare the real people behind the facades. Put the Knife in Gently is hugely entertaining and a compelling read for anyone interested in Hollywood and the film legends of the twentieth century.”

Assessing Children's Learning by Mary Jane Drummond (£9.50)Publisher: David Fulton — 1995Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 1853461989]Condition: Very Good.Description: Reprint with amendments. [First: 1993] From the cover: “This book examines some of the important questions that teachers and other educators ask themselves as they assess children’s learning across the curriculum. It offers an alternative to the objective, mechanical approaches to assessment that have proliferated since the implementation of the 1988 Education Reform Act. In this book, assessment is seen as the process in which teachers look at children’s learning, strive to understand it, and then put their understanding to good use. It invites teachers to consider the choices they make in the process of assessment, and to acknowledge their right, their responsibility and their power to act in the interests of children.”Notes: Size: C Format (8½" x 5¼"). Basic Steps in Astronomy by John Boulton (£9.50)Publisher: Blandford Press — 1979Binding: Hardback [ISBN: 0713710128]Condition: Very Good. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding.Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs, diagrams & charts. From the cover: “Astronomy is a science in which the amateur can contribute greatly to the knowledge of the subject. Constant observation of the heavens is the key to the accumulation of new data and the formulation of new theories about the nature and the origin of the Universe.

Basic Steps in Astronomy is the beginner’s guide to the subject. It aims to encourage those already interested in it and introduce them to the equipment and the techniques that will turn a reading knowledge into a practical hobby.

After an introductory history of the subject the book describes the equipment that a beginner can buy or build. It then goes on to discuss the way in which various objects can be located on the celestial sphere. The second half of the book acts as a guide to what can be seen — the moon and planets, the stars, and the galaxies. Observations from both the southern and northern hemispheres are dealt with and there are 4 pages of full colour and over 50 black and white illustrations.”
