Cosmology and Astrophysics Through Problems by T. [Thanu] Padmanabhan (£63.00)Publisher: Cambridge: Cambridge University Press — 1996Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0521467837]Condition: Very Good. Upper wrapper slighty curled. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Graphs;

From the cover: “Modern cosmology and high energy astrophysics have become interdisciplinary research subjects and new graduate students are now expected to assimilate a broad range of physical concepts. This innovative book provides a clear and pedagogical introduction to research in these areas through a series of problems and answers. The problems are designed to develop each core topic in a simple and coherent way and full solutions are provided to make this book completely self-contained.

The first half of the book covers the core subjects of astrophysical processes, gravitational dynamics, radiative processes, fluid mechanics and general relativity. The second half uses these concepts to develop modern cosmology: topics include the Friedmann model and thermal history, dynamics of dark matter and baryons in an expanding universe, physics of high-redshift objects and the very early universe. This unique self-study textbook will be of key interest to graduate students and researchers in cosmology, astrophysics, relativity and theoretical physics. It is particularly well suited to graduate-level courses.”

Neoclassicism in the North: Swedish Furniture and Interiors, 1770-1850: With a Catalog of Furniture Types and Styles and Notes on the Architects, Artists, and Craftsmen by Hakan Groth (£49.00)Publisher: London: Thames & Hudson — 1990Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0500236046]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is sunned at the join of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Contains: Black & white photographs; Colour photographs; References; Frontispiece; Title page vignette; Plans;

From the cover: “When the twenty-three-year-old Crown Prince Gustaf returned from Versailles in 1771 to ascend the throne of Sweden, he was determined to give his country a leading place in Europe culturally as well as politically. The style that he fostered — Neoclassicism — was itself an international movement. There are echoes in the interiors displayed here of the Louis XVI and Empire modes; pieces of furniture may reflect French, English or German influences, or be copied from objects discovered at Pompeii — but all is suffused by a distinctively Swedish freshness and by the northern light.

From royal salons with exquisite Pompeian ornament to modest spatter-painted Biedermeier halls, Hakan Groth and Fritz von der Schulenburg open the doors on an astonishing sequence of interiors which will come as a revelation to all but a few fortunate travellers; some, intensely private, are little known even in Sweden. Fritz von der Schulenburg’s marvellously evocative photographs, all specially taken for this book, present in detail the decoration and furnishings of twenty houses and apartments. Hakan Groth traces the evolution of the Neoclassical style in Sweden, placing it in its wider European context, and explores each of the buildings and its history. Plans, and original drawings by the architects and designers, complete the picture. These beautiful interiors are of unique value today not only as evocations of the past and treasure-houses of superb craftsmanship but also as a stimulus to contemporary decorators, who are increasingly turning to Neoclassicism for inspiration, and as a reminder that an international language can be spoken in a delightfully personal way.”

SPQR by Paul Hyde Bonner (£28.00)Publisher: Derek Verschoyle — 1953Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good+ — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with rubbing at the spine ends and corners. Knocked at the bottom corner of the lower board. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Tanning to the blanks. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned.Description: From the cover: “It was the brand of ancient Rome and it stood for Senatus Popiihisqiie Romanus. The letters proclaimed that whatever was thus labelled was Rome’s property; today they still appear on objects owned by the city. And today Rome still puts this mark on its captives, as Lovat Fraser, First Secretary of the American Embassy, discovers.

He has been warned about the Roman virus. “Never get deeply involved in a Roman love affair or really entangled in the life of a Roman”, said a wise colleague; “for once you do that, you will cease to serve your country and will serve only them”. As the story opens, wise counsel has prevailed for a long time. But Fraser is young, healthy and unmarried. Suddenly his control breaks completely. Within a few days the startled diplomat finds himself involved with not one but two Roman women (one is American-born, it is true, but she has become Roman to the core). Dazzled by the brilliance of Roman society, the splendour of the palaces, and, above all, by the charms of the beautiful Duchess of Lanza, Fraser throws caution to the winds. In the weeks that follow he is swept along by an intricate chain of events which includes the unmasking of a Communist agent and a murder. For a while he believes that his career is in jeopardy; but the spell breaks just in time, and this witty and sophisticated novel ends on a cheerful note.

Paul Hyde Bonner writes of Rome and its surrounding Campagna with great descriptive skill, and his readers will find long before they reach the end that they too have fallen under the spell of the Eternal City.”

Ornamental Design 1850 Ornementale Kunst 1850 Motifs Ornementaux 1850 Design Ornementale 1850 El Diseno Ornamental 1850 by Pepin Van Roojen (£24.00)Publisher: Amsterdam: The Pepin Press — 1998Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 9054960302]Condition: Very Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers with a small sticker ghost to the upper panel. Text block has a faint ripple throughout although the plates are well preserved. A good copy. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Plates;

From the cover: “The material presented in this book was originally published in the early 1870s, and representative of styles prevalent in the preceding decades. This was a period during which ornamental design became increasingly widespread, but, ironically, not a time during which many new designs were developed. Instead, the past was raided by architects, artists and craftsmen, and shapes and patterns that at one point in history may have had revered meanings, were copied, altered, combined or split to pieces, without much consideration for their original purpose. However, the result is a wealth of beautiful design. Practically every ornamental style known to early and mid-nineteenth century Europeans, from ancient Egyptian to Baroque, is represented here. The main items illustrated are ceramics, metalware, glass objects, furniture, carpets and other textiles, either complete, or in detail. There are also some architectural elements and examples of interior decoration.

Design inspired by ancient ancient Egypt displays the presence of stylised lotus flowers, motifs reminiscent of hieroglyphs, zig-zag patterns and spiralling constructions. Many examples of Greek ornamental design were copied from friezes on which mythical events were recorded. Very popular Greek ornaments are fret, spiral and bead borders, variations on the echinus (egg and dart), the acanthus and rosettes and palmettes. A principal characteristic of Greek design is the use of columns in architecture and interiors, topped with elaborate capitals. Very simply put, Roman adornment seems to have been largely an exuberant extension of the Greek visual vocabulary, with Etruscan elements added. Some of the mosaic designs in this book were clearly based on Pompeian originals. The so-called Byzantine school is a blending of styles: Greek, Roman, and early Christian ornaments, combined with elements from Persia and Syria. Byzantine ornamentation was one of the sources of Islamic decorative style, with elaborate geometrical patterns due to the interdiction of representations of living things. Illustrative of the Moorish style are the inter-woven formations based on Arabic calligraphy. The Gothic period contributed, among others, variations on the clover leaf: trefoils, quatrefoils and cinquefoils, but also the fleur-de-lis and the Tudor rose. During the Renaissance, the classical Greco-Roman models were rejuvenated and complemented with elements from the Near Orient. Especially in architecture, classical orders were followed. In ornamental design, freer patterns became fashionable. Of course, the Renaissance motifs used during the period covered by this book, were, again, often combined with other styles.”

Character Steins: A Collector's Guide by Eugene V. Manusov & Mike Wald (£19.00)Publisher: New York, Toronto & London: Cornwall Books — 1987Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0845347845]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper has a tape reinforcement to the reverse of the head of the spine. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: “This comprehensive book provides a finely illustrated guide to the field of character stein collecting. These unique figural pieces, usually not cylindrical, are modeled so that the body and lid form a caricature, a figure, or an object. The fanciful imagery of the steins is always imaginative, and sometimes comical. An eclectic variety of creations are depicted in the steins: people (monks, historic personages, military figures, mythological characters); animals (horses, lions, foxes’ heads — even a rhinoceros); and objects (skulls, sports equipment, buildings, for example).

The book thoroughly examines each of these and is arranged according to subject depicted, each chapter treating a different category. The result is an intriguing picture catalog containing over 600 illustrations of steins and stein-related items, many of which are in full color. Each illustration is accompanied by a brief description that includes the stein’s dimensions, its coloring, a translation of old German inscriptions, an explanation of what the stein represents, and the manufacturers (if known). The text also offers an extensive listing of the manufacturer’s marks that are found on many of the steins.

Several special chapters written by authorities on character steins have been included in the book: Jack G. Lowenstein writes about Beer Stein Ceramics, Ron Fox tells How Musterschutz Character Steins Were Made, and the late Dr. J. Joseph Hersh contributed an interesting chapter on The Hexagram as the Brewer’s Symbol. There are also chapters on contemporary steins and the artifacts relating to them, and a concise history of antique character drinking vessels. Since the publication of the Encyclopedia of Character Steins in 1976, old and new character stein collectors have brought forth a number of previously unknown steins. The book includes pictures of these newly discovered steins, and complements them with a fascinating section that outlines new facts that have come to light concerning the intricacies of this absorbing field of study. The chapter Musterschutz and the Elusive # Mark sheds light on the identity of the manufacturer of the popular so-called Musterschutz steins.

Collectors like Werner Sahm, Roland Henschen, and Lotti Lopez, through diligent searching, have been able to obtain copies of many original stein manufacturers’ catalogs, some pages of which show original sketches or photos of character steins. Because of this research, the authors are able to display in the Old Catalogs portion of the book some of these exciting finds from manufacturers such as Rosskopf & Gerz, Steinzeugwerke, Reinhold Hanke, Mer-kelbach & Wick, Marzi & Remy, and J. W. Remy. These catalogs facilitated the search to identify the previously unknown makers of many character steins.

In addition to these catalogs, much new information has come from researchers who have recently published their results in Prosit, the quarterly publication of Stein Collectors International. While much progress has been made in determining manufacturers, there is still much to be discovered. Answers always seem to raise new questions; new character steins that are “found” occasionally fill in known gaps, but more often seem to carry still unknown marks or styles. Gene Manusov’s and Mike Wald’s enthusiasm for the study and collection of character steins is infectious. In this highly informative work, collectors, dealers, and antique lovers will enjoy their beautiful pictures supplemented by their stimulating perceptive text.”

Four Aspects Of The Film by James L. Limbacher (£19.00)Publisher: Brussel & Brussel — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper frayed at the spine ends and corners, tear to the foot of the join of the upper panel, faded at the spine with a little loss at the head. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Previous owners' inscription to the first blank. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Colour Drawings; Diagrams;

From the cover: “The development of the motion picture from a flickering image on a strip of black-and-white film to the modern wide-screen colour film with stereophonic sound is a fascinating part of film history. The constant and continuous scientific development of the science of the film has resulted in a 20th Century art form.

Man’s obsession with making inanimate objects seem to move, goes back thousands of years and this book traces the arduous trial-and-error, success-and-failure, up-and-down development of the motion picture into the influential and significant art form it has become today.

For the first time between the covers of a single book, the illuminating history of the additions to film art — sound, colour, 3-D, widescreen and some of the avant-garde methods of film presentation — are brought together into a continuous flow of facts which will interest not only the film scholar and the avid moviegoer, but the casual general reader as well.

Four Aspects of the Film also serves as the only complete reference work on these subjects, with lists of films which give a historical perspective to the information given in the four studies. The result of 20 years of research and study, this volume should provide the reader not only with heretofore unavailable information on the subject, but enlightenment as well.”

Mackinnon and East Africa 1878-1895: A Study in the New Imperialism by John S. Galbraith (£18.50)Publisher: Cambridge: At The University Press — 1972Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. [ISBN: 0521083443]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with fading to the spine. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Maps;

From the cover: “In the 1870s Britain dominated the coast of east Africa by informal influence exerted from Zanzibar through the renowned consul-general, Sir John Kirk. This unchallenged position ended with the decision of Bismarck to back Carl Peters in his treaty-making activities and the mainland opposite Zanzibar was partitioned in 1886 into British and German spheres.

The British government was not willing to assume the responsibility and expense involved in administration of its area of influence and it assigned control to the Imperial British East Africa Company headed by William Mackinnon. The company’s life was short and inglorious. The government attributed its failure to the ineffectuality of Mackinnon and the Company’s directors blamed the government for using the Company to advance political objects and not providing it with proper support.

This book considers this episode in British Imperial History, the factors involved and Mackinnon’s part in it. The book considers the interaction of Mackinnon and the government from the 1870s when his first efforts in east Africa were frustrated by Salisbury to the liquidation of the Company in the mid-1890s.”

Guide Catalogue Of The Neolithic And Bronze Age Collections In Devizes Museum by F. K. Annable & D. D. A. Simpson (£18.00)Publisher: Wiltshire Archaeological & Natural History Society — 1964Binding: Hardback First Edition. Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated with black and white photographs & drawings. From the preface: “The present volume, the fourth in the series of printed catalogues published by the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, is intended to replace the prehistoric sections of the former publications (Devizes Museum Catalogues, Part I (1896) and Part II (1911 and 1934)), now out of print, and largely out of date.

Although the essential purpose of this volume is to present a virtually exhaustive corpus of the later prehistoric antiquities preserved in the Society’s museum at Devizes, the inclusion of an introductory chapter describing the Colt Hoare-Cunnington partnership, and summary accounts of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages in southern Britain, are aimed additionally at providing interest for the general reader, in the hope that the catalogue may thereby attract a wider public.

In the lengthy period intervening between the original discovery of the objects illustrated herein, and their final acquisition and transference from Stourhead House to Devizes Museum, there have been, unhappily, many losses, as well as discrepancies which have arisen relating to the precise attribution of some of the finds. In compiling this fourth edition every effort has, therefore, been made to base the descriptions on a close study of the original sources, in particular, the manuscript letters of William Cunnington (1754-1810) to Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758-1838), and The Ancient History of North and South Wiltshire, Vols. I and II, by Colt Hoare, the classic account of their joint researches which is itself written very largely from the excavation ‘reports’ contained in the Cunnington letters.

The compilers of the present catalogue wish to express their lively appreciation of the encouragement and advice they have received throughout its compilation from Professor Stuart Piggott, F. S. A. , F. B. A. , and Professor R. J. C. Atkinson, M. A. , F. S. A. Dr. Isobel Smith, F. S. A. , has also given valuable assistance on a number of problems during the manuscript stages. Gratitude is also expressed to Mr. R. E. Sandell, M. A. , F. S. A. , Hon. Librarian to the Society, for consistent help, and to Mrs. G. P. Mitchell, B. A. , Assistant Curator, for her co-operation during the final stages of the work.

The detail photographs at the end of the book were taken by the Department of Photography, Bath Academy of Art. The Committee of the Society is grateful for their enthusiastic collaboration..”

Living with Folk Art: Ethnic Styles from Around the World by Nicholas Barnard (£14.00)Publisher: Thames & Hudson — 1991Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0500015104]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: Jacket illustration: Upper: Pre-Columbian masks, figures and animals are grouped alongside an Australian Aborigine stele; Rear: A collection of Mexican Indian and colonial artifacts, furniture and furnishings. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Turkoman jewellery hung in glittering clusters above a cottage fireplace, a shapely and colourful array of Pueblo pots brightening drab kitchen shelves, an Indian house-shrine forming a miniature alcove for a flickering flame… here are interiors of all kinds in which ethnic art shines out as a challenging and increasingly fashionable alternative to the familiar trappings of conventional home decoration. Nicholas Barnard and James Merrell’s painstaking location work in Europe and America has yielded dazzling colour photographs of tribal and folk art beautifully harmonized with the best of Western design.

The art of primitive peoples — ceramics and textiles, masks and metalware, baskets and carvings — was once dismissed in the West as heathen and crude; but opinions have now been completely transformed. Artists such as Picasso and Matisse led the new enthusiasm for tribal and folk art in the early decades of the twentieth century. Today such dynamic yet deeply rooted creativity is available to us all: to travellers, in museums and art galleries, but also, more importantly, in Western shops and markets. From delicate Indonesian floral batiks to ghoulish Mexican Day-of-the-Dead figurines, from African earthenware to intricately fretted Indian screens, the range of artefacts now obtainable is boundless.

Living with Folk Art charts the growing appreciation of arts and crafts from regions outside the developed world. The original use and significance of the objects now adorning our homes are fully detailed, and a worldwide survey documents the peoples who made them. Nicholas Barnard provides inspiring ideas for displaying these items, whether functionally as furniture, architectural fittings or kitchenware, or simply as decorations, and advises on their care and collection. A comprehensive directory lists galleries where such art can be seen, and retailers from whom it can be obtained.

Exotic, charming, but always unusual and provocative, folk art can transform interiors of all kinds.”

Nelson's Purse: An Extraordinary Historical Detective Story Shedding New Light on the Life of Britain's Greatest Naval Hero by Martyn Downer (£13.00)Publisher: London, Toronto, Sydney, Auckland & Johannesburg: Bantam Press — 2004Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 9780593051801]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Colour Plates; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “At the beginning on July 2002, Sotheby’s announced to the world the discovery of a major cache of material relating to the life of England’s greatest naval hero, Horatio Nelson. The man who made this extraordinary find and who subsequently spent over a year of his life validating the material and placing it in the context of Nelson’s life and relationships was Martyn Downer, Head of Jewellery at Sotheby’s in London.

The contents of this once-in-a-lifetime discovery are remarkable — some objects were thought to have been lost, others had previously never been known to have existed. A mongst the latter is a remarkable archive of letters from Nelson’s jilted wife, Fanny, detailing the breakdown of their marriage. For the first time, thanks to this find, Fanny’s role in Nelson’s life acquires real biographical substance. Also in the find are medals, swords, jewellery (including a stunning diamond brooch with the initials H and N gifted to Emma Hamilton), porcelain, weaponry, and other papers and letters (including some emotive letters by Emma and Nelson himself) which shed fascinating new light on Nelson’s domestic affairs. Most dramatically, the cache also includes the bloodstained purse Nelson was carrying on the day he was shot on board HMS Victory in 1805, still containing its gold coins.

Martyn Downer tells the extraordinary historical detective story behind this great find and its progress from discovery to auction. It is a story which reveals the intimate life of Nelson, his wife and his mistress in a way which has hitherto been denied to biographers.”

Treasures from Sudan by Julie R. Anderson (£13.00)Publisher: The British Museum Press — 2004Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0714119652]Condition: Very Good. Description: First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Diagrams; Maps;

From the cover: “For millennia the Sudan, the largest country in Africa, has been the zone of contact between the Mediterranean world and the peoples of Central Africa. It has a rich and varied heritage embodied in numerous archaeological sites and countless ancient artefacts, many of great historical importance and outstanding aesthetic quality.

This book highlights a selection of the finest antiquities from the magnificent collection of the Sudan National Museum in Khartoum, ranging from large royal statues in stone to small, finely crafted gold jewellery. All feature prominently in Sudan: Ancient Treasures, a special exhibition mounted at the British Museum in 2004 to celebrate the centenary of the Sudan’s first museum — the forerunner of the current National Museum — and to increase public awareness of the country’s long and fascinating history. With a short essay on the history and archaeology of Sudan, and photographs of the sites at which many of the objects were found, this book provides an ideal introduction to the spectacular but still little-known treasures of this major African country.”

Infantilia: The Archaeology of the Nursery by Arnold Haskell & Min Lewis (£12.50)Publisher: London: Dennis Dobson — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Signed by the Author.[ISBN: 0234776781]Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with heavier tanning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “It is rare to find material assembled for the first time between the covers of a book that deals with objects so familiar that we are no longer aware of them. Infantilia is such a book. It tells in drawings and text the history of perambulators, feeding bottles and rattles in a manner that is of interest to the collector of increasingly rare and often beautiful objects, to the sociologist and to the pram-pushing mum and dad in the street.

It is amazing that no such study has previously appeared and its experienced authors have made it lively, personal and scholarly with illustrations of 125 different objects.

When was the first pram made? Can you date a vintage pram? Did you realise that they were collector’s pieces? Would you recognise a blue and white willow pattern feeding bottle of 150 years ago when even the pottery that made it has no record? Did you know that the feeding bottle has a 4,000-year-old history? In no book on silver is there a section on rattles… did you realise that they were made by the finest craftsmen of the day and that they are the oldest toys in the world?

This book opens up a new field of study, the archaeology of the nursery, a fascination for anyone who has ever been pushed in a pram.”

Will the Lizards cut their losses by reducing Earth to radioactive wasteland? And just what is the US doing so secretly in the asteroid belt? Macdonald Guide to Buying Antique Silver & Sheffield Plate by Rachael Feild (£10.50)Publisher: Macdonald Orbis — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0356123820]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “Collecting antique English silver is a pleasure that need by no means be confined to the rich, yet many people shy away from buying old pieces and opt for something modern, just to be on the safe side. The terminology used by dealers seems too mysterious, the choice overwhelmingly wide, the decisions too hard. How rewarding it can be, however, with a slowly growing knowledge of the subject, to delve into the rich history, to recognise the changing styles, and to appreciate with increasing delight the use and display of old English silver in your own home.

If sterling silver bites too deep into a slim budget, it can be highly enjoyable to explore the possibilities of old Sheffield plate, and to acquire a few pieces that will grace a table with all the appearance of its more expensive cousin.

The Macdonald Guide to Buying Antique Silver and Sheffield Plate provides all the essential information the buyer needs — quickly, clearly and simply. It looks in detail at forty-eight classic items likely to be encountered in shops or salerooms — ranging from large, important pieces originally made to demonstrate the wealth and power of their owners, down to the smallest, most affordable silver made to use and enjoy: cutlery, cruets, card cases, vesta cases and all the charming little objects that were taken for granted by earlier generations.”

New Parents: A Guide to Pregnancy, Baby and Child Care for Today’s Mothers and Fathers by Edited by Dr. David Harvey (£10.50)Publisher: Hamlyn — 1988Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0600561615]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and top corners with commensurate ruffling to the dust wrapper. Dust wrapper a little age-toned but not unpleasant.Description: From the cover: “For today’s parents, the wonderful experience of bringing a baby into the world can often be spoiled by the anxieties and frustrations of coping with modern approaches to childbirth. High technology in our hospitals has produced a strong reaction from those who fear that childbirth is being dehumanized, while theories behind such important issues as breastfeeding, foetal health and post-natal depression seem to change with alarming regularity. It is small wonder that many new parents are both concerned and bewildered, and this book has been written both to inform and reassure, so that mothers and fathers on the threshold of such a momentous change to their lives remain in full command of their rapidly changing circumstances. Covering pregnancy, childbirth and childcare up to the age of five, New Parents is an essential work of reference for everyone concerned about how their baby is born and how it will grow and develop in the crucial years of early childhood. Chapters deal with every aspect, physiological and emotional, from antenatal care and the delivery itself to cleaning, bathing, nappy changing and potty training. Separate chapters deal with problem pregnancies, intensive care for newborn babies, and older children with special needs. There is also full information on pre-school development, from baby to toddler to child, while a section on the sick child covers safety and accident prevention in the home, positive health care and a full breakdown of common ailments in babies and young children, together with the appropriate steps to cope with them.”Notes: Size: 10¾" x 7½".
