The White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov (£64.00)Publisher: London: Collins & Harvill Press — 1971Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0002619059]Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed, without loss although untidy and now tape-reinforced on the verso, with sunning to the spine. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Previous owners' gift inscription to the first blank. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise bar for small tear at the foot of the last two leaves. Description: From the cover: “The time — 1918. The place — Kiev, capital of the Ukraine, torn by revolution and civil war. The people — the Turbin family of two brothers and a sister, whose home is a calm pool of affection, warmth and humanity in a maelstrom of cold, snow, violence and sudden death. Alexei Turbin, eldest brother and head of the family, is a doctor returned from the war; his sister Elena is married to an unpleasant Baltic German who scuttles away like a rat as soon as danger threatens. The youngest is Nikolka, at seventeen just out of officer-cadet school and a volunteer in one of the scratch units manned by officers which formed the White Guard in the Ukraine. A cuckoo in their nest is their hopeless cousin from Zhitomir, Lariosik, a charming bungler who always says the wrong thing, breaks everything he touches, yet is welcomed into the Turbins’ charmed circle with love and kindness.

At the beginning, the Germans are still occupying Kiev, propping up the feeble regime of the Hetman Skoropadsky. Their cause lost in advance by the Hetman’s ignoble defection, Alexei and Nikolka Turbin and their White Guard officer friends make a brave but futile attempt to resist the capture of Kiev by the adventurer Petlyura and his army of long-moustached, baggy-trousered, trigger-happy Ukrainian roughnecks.

Savage while it lasts, Petlyura’s occupation of Kiev is at least short and as his motley troops slink away, Bulgakov coins an image of power which is the perfect antithesis to the cosy, womb-like interior of the Turbin’s home: on the track outside Kiev, hissing gently, waiting to grind inexorably into the city, stands the huge steel-clad articulated juggernaut of a Bolshevik armoured train.”

The Explorers Guild Volume One: A Passage to Shambhala by Jon Baird, with Kevin Costner & Stephen Meyer (£28.00)Publisher: New York: Atria Books — 2015Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9781471153723]Condition: Very Good+ — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Description: Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates; Black & White Drawings; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: “Developed by Academy Award winner Kevin Costner, this is a magnificently produced, illustrative adventure story about a clandestine society of rogue voyagers on a mission to discover the mysteries that lie beyond the boundaries of the known world. Behind the staid public rooms of an old world gentlemen’s club operates a more mysterious organization: The Explorers’ Guild, a clandestine group of adventurers who bravely journey to those places in which light gives way to shadow and reason is usurped by myth. The secrets they seek are hidden in mountain ranges and lost in deserts, buried in the ocean floor and lodged deep in polar ice.

The aim of The Explorers’ Guild: to discover the mysteries that lie beyond the boundaries of the known world. Set against the backdrop of World War I, with Western Civilization on the edge of calamity, the first instalment in The Explorers’ Guild series, A Passage to Shambhala, concerns the Guild’s quest to find the golden city of Buddhist myth. The search will take them from the Polar North to the Mongolian deserts, through the underground canals of Asia to deep inside the Himalayas, before the fabled city finally divulges its secrets and the globe-spanning journey plays out to its startling conclusion. The Explorers’ Guild is a rare publishing opportunity, powered by the creative passion of one of the world’s true storytelling masters, Kevin Costner.”

The Madonna of the Astrolabe by J. I. M. [John Innes Mackintosh] Stewart (£27.00)Publisher: London: Victor Gollancz — 1977Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0575022507]Condition: Very Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper heavily sunned at the spine. Leans slightly. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: Number 4 in the series.

From the cover: “This fourth book in J. I. M. Stewart’s splendid quintet of Oxford novels introduces new themes, new characters, a new impetus. There’s the alarming discovery that the fabric of the college’s great tower is in a dangerous condition; and the problem of how to raise the money for its restoration involves the Provost and some of his colleagues in very devious intrigues. And there’s the wonderful discovery, in a college attic, of a hitherto unrecorded — and, of course, priceless — Piero della Francesca; and its disappearance in the middle of a riotous performance of Marlowe’s Tamburlaine.

On a more personal level, there’s also the totally unexpected arrival of Duncan Pattullo’s ex-wife, a lady of roving sexual proclivities and a great embarrassment to many. And there’s the familiar and engaging chorus of ancient dons; though old Timbermill’s death, in a very moving episode, depletes their number.

Another fine novel in a most memorable series.”

Fleming Of Honister by Graham Sutton (£23.00)Publisher: London: Hodder & Stoughton — 1953Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with tears and loss to the spine ends and corners. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Price Clipped. Pages lightly age-tanned. Description: From the cover: “This sterling novel is set in the Cumberland of the 1870’s. At thirty-six, John Fleming of Borrowdale throws up a job in which he is a master-craftsman to join Tom Burland. Resourceful, sturdy, honest as the fells that bred him, John has two loyalties : first to Joanna, his young sister, whom he has loved from babyhood with a father’s devotion ; second to Burland and the railway which he helps him to build.

John is a good friend and a good hater. His feud against his gipsy kinsman, Red Nugent, flames through the story; and it is paralleled by a struggle less personal but no less grim, waged in the high fells and in Eden valley by the railway men against Nature. These two themes culminate in the triumph of the new line, the destruction of Nugent, and the happiness of young Joanna.

Looking back through the years, John tells the tale in his own fashion : with humour, with shrewd philosophy, and with frankness from which emerges a personality as lovable as it is tough.”

From the cover: “George was born into a world of village cricket matches and fox-hunting, but his failing income and the onset of war threatens his way of life. A touching depiction of pre-First World War Britain, Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man is also a coming-of-age story which follows George from a shy and awkward childhood, through shiftless adolescence, to an officer just beginning to understand the horrors of trench warfare. Written after Sassoon’s return from the First World War but looking back at happier times, Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man was published anonymously in 1928. Already established as a poet, this was Sassoon’s first attempt at fiction — and Faber’s first bestseller.”
