To Find A Golden Pony by Amanda Gavin [Clodagh Micaela Gibson Jarvie] (£278.00)Publisher: J. M. Dent & Sons — 1965Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with corresponding grazing to the dustwrapper. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. Text complete, clean and tight. A pleasant copy of an uncommon title. Description: From the cover: “This is a pony book with a difference. It deals sensitively with a young girl’s companionship with animals, and how she learns to manage them while at the same time developing self-reliance during a period of delicate readjustment. Jo Garrett is five when her mother dies, and her father wisely sends her away from his Suffolk farm to live with cousins in Sussex. So, until she is ten, she comes under the spell of ponies, caring for them as well as riding them. She then returns to the farm, and her father is pleased to notice what a self-confident child she has become, with definite ideas of her own as to what she wants from life. Jo’s personality is also contrasted with all the others in the story — both human and animal — who come fully alive as individuals in this entertaining account of country life. Finally, Jo’s slow adjustment to the idea of her father’s remarriage is described with understanding and insight..”Notes: Jacket designed by Elisabeth Grant. Illustrated by Elisabeth Grant. Human Nature: Fact and Fiction by Edited by Robin Headlam Wells & Johnjoe McFadden (£59.50)Publisher: Continuum — 2006Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0826485464]Condition: Near Fine.Description: First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “What do we mean by ‘human nature’? Is there a genetically determined core of humanity that unites us all as members of a single species? Or is the thing we call human nature a social construct? And how do we explain the mystery of human creativity? Do great writers have an intuitive grasp of what makes human beings tick, or are they merely the mouthpiece of contemporary culture? It has been claimed that ‘the greatest enterprise of the mind has always been and always will be the attempted linkage of the sciences and humanities’ (Edward O. Wilson). This ground-breaking book marks the beginning of a new dialogue between the two. Rather than focusing on the division between what C.P. Snow called ‘the two cultures’, it shows that the sciences and humanities have much to learn from each other. Points of disagreement remain. Yet there is in this volume a genuine attempt to bridge the gulf that has traditionally separated the sciences and humanities and to reach a better understanding of what it means to be human. Human Nature — Fact and Fiction is a major new contribution to the debate on human nature, set to be required reading for anyone with a background in either the arts or the sciences who is interested in understanding what defines us as human beings — in what we are, and why.”Notes: Foreword or introduction by A. The Winter Queen: The Life of Elizabeth of Bohemia 1596-1662 by Rosalind K. Regarded as one of the most romantic figures in the history of the seventeenth century, she was the crucial link between the Stewart kings and the House of Hanover. Elizabeth -was successively a royal princess in Linlithgow, then in London, an adored bride in Heidelberg, a Queen Consort in Prague, an impoverished exile in The Hague, and finally the respected aunt of Charles II in Restoration London. The author, the distinguished historian Dr Rosalind K. Marshall, has published widely on the Stewarts, including biographies of Mary of Guise and Mary, Queen of Scots.”

H.M.S. Electra as Told to A. V. Sellwood by T. J. Cain (£43.00)Publisher: London: Frederick Muller Limited — 1960Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with damp wrinkling to both panels and a short, closed, tear to the head of the upper panel. Price Clipped. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Leans slightly. Pages very gently age-tanned. Description: 2nd impression. [First Edition: 1959] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: “The only time that H. M. S. Electra got a wartime “mention” in the national press was when three-quarters of her crew were no longer able to read it. They were dead.

For it was the disastrous yet little-known Battle of the Java Sea — where a British, Australian, American and Dutch force was annihilated by the Japanese — that put Electron’s name in print.

‘H. M. S. Electra attacked through the smoke and was seen no more…’

The epitaph was terse, though moving. It left much unsaid. And today, in H. M. S. Electra, Lieutenant-Commander T. J. Cain — who fired her torpedoes during her last desperate battle — does much to do justice, long belated, to both the ship and the company who served her.

The result is sensational. For Cain’s story, prepared with the aid of author and naval correspondent A. V. Sellwood, reveals that the “unknown” Electra was the un-publicised companion-in-battle of some of the best-known names in the Royal Navy, and was the witness of events that shook the world. The sinking of the Athenia, the Ark Royal’s attacks on the Nazis in Norway, the first Russian convoy, the defence of Singapore — wherever there was trouble Electra was sure to be found.

SHE was the unnamed destroyer that sailed with Hood to find the Bismarck, and picked up the former’s three survivors…

SHE was at the sinking of the Repulse and Prince of Wales, and snatched part of their crews to safety beneath the mammoth Jap air attack…

And SHE was destroyed during a lone torpedo onslaught against an entire Japanese fleet, to cover the disabled Exeter, famous veteran of the River Plate.

H. M. S. Electra is not “just a war-story” — it is also a history. But it is a very human history — history as seen by a man who helped to make it.

Lieut. -Commander Cain, who, after a fantastic escape in a U. S. submarine, was later captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of the Japanese, is pungent in his comments regarding the blunders of the time. But equally he is an enthusiast — for Electra, her officers, and the men who made her what he calls: A happy ship — the finest I have ever known.”

The Late, Great Pennsylvania Station by Lorraine Diehl (£33.00)Publisher: The Stephen Greene Press (Vermont) — 1987Binding: Paperback [ISBN: 0828906033]Condition: Very Good. Description: Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: “New York City’s Pennsylvania Station, conceived as a symbol of the wealth and power of America’s mightiest railroad, became a national monument during its short life. This history of the famous depot is not only a story of the superb achievement of architect Charles Pollen Me Kin, but also a tale of human struggle and of a complex and dangerous engineering triumph. Lorraine Diehl’s lively, authoritative text, together with vintage photographs and drawings, recaptures the classical grandeur of the building and the drama and turbulence of its times — from the sunny pre — World War I era through 1963, when it was destroyed in the appalling act of civic vandalism that spurred the modern Landmark Preservation movement.”

Medieval Sculpture by Roberto Salvini (£31.00)Publisher: London: Michael Joseph — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0718105788]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Top edge dye has run slightly on the first blank and pastedown. Slight and light spotting to the start and finish. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise. Description: Jacket illustration: Gothic Pieta from Seeon, Bavaria c. 1420-30. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Plates;

From the cover: “The history of medieval sculpture in Western Europe is often described as a gradual rediscovery of technical skill and naturalism. In this volume, the author approaches his subject from a different angle, tracing the development of sculpture against a background of changing political, social and religious structures and in relation to the growth of written and spoken languages. He demonstrates that a new kind of sculpture, a humble, popular style which developed from Roman provincial sculpture, appeared and existed side by side with courtly styles which preserved or rediscovered much of the dignity of Late Classical art.

As feudalism declined, this dichotomy between the popular and courtly disappeared. The first literary Romance languages took root and regional Romanesque styles developed, identified with religious architecture and sculptors like Gislebertus, Wiligelmo and Antelami.

In the Gothic age, national idioms developed in the figurative arts as France, England and Germany became unified monarchical states. In Italy a national consciousness, on a cultural level, evolved; with it are associated the sculptors of the Pisano family and the cathedrals they decorated in Pisa and Siena.

As the Renaissance flowered in Italy and southern France, the Late Gothic style continued in the north, especially in Germany, where the work of Riemen-schneider and Veil Stoss is outstanding in this period.

This volume, spanning over 1,000 years from the fifth to the fifteenth century, contains a remarkable selection of illustrations which follow closely the historical development and represent the finest examples of Medieval art.”

Englishness and Empire 1939-1965 by Wendy Webster (£29.00)Publisher: Oxford University Press — 2005Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0199258600]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the head of the spine and the top corners of the boards with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight. Description: From the cover: “Did loss of imperial power and the end of empire have any significant impact on metropolitan culture and identity after 1939? Within a burgeoning literature on national identity and Englishness, this is a question that has received surprisingly little attention.

Drawing on extensive research in the media archive, Wendy Webster’s highly readable study investigates popular narratives of nation, and the significance of empire and its legacies in shaping national identity after 1939. What were the tensions and uncertainties involved in defining a post-imperial nation? How did imperial legacies inform questions about who belonged in Britain and debates about race, immigration, and nationality? What did the Commonwealth mean? What was the significance of America to the making of a post-imperial nation? Focusing on stories told through prolific filmic and television imagery — the Second World War, the Coronation and Everest, colonial wars of the 1950s, Winston Churchill’s funeral — the book explores how far, and in what contexts and unexpected places, imperial identity and loss of imperial power resonated in popular narratives of nation.

A novel thematic focus on empire and Englishness in the post-1945 period makes this an important study for scholars and students of modern British history, empire and Commonwealth, decolonization, migration, gender, ethnicity, and race.”

Description: First in this, paperback, edition. First published by The Athlone Press in 2000 as Sexuality in the Legal Arena

From the cover: “What does your sexuality have to do with your status as subject, citizen, or spouse? In our global political economy, this question has moved out of the domestic closet and into the world of public policy, human rights, and cultural norms, and is increasingly mediated, negotiated, and legislated in the legal arena. Prominent scholars of law and sexuality on four continents cross disciplines and national boundaries to explore provocative legal and political issues raised by the cultural, social, and political organization of intimate life. Encompassing a broad spectrum of perspectives, from literary analysis and postcolonial studies to feminist, queer, and race theory, their critical, skeptical, and often pragmatic analysis maps the current state of the global intersections between law and sexuality and social change.

Previous owners' inscription to the first blank.Description: From the introduction: “This is the unique story of a British housewife who became paralysed from the waist down as a result of a serious spinal injury received in a car accident in Junel970. The uniqueness lies in the fact that this was the first British patient to go, after many months of treatment in a famous British National Spinal Unit, to Czechoslovakia for the highly controversial spinal neurosurgery that had been practised there for many years. The direct result of this surgery gave rise to several areas of improvement, particularly in terms of very severe pain that had prevented proper rehabilitation by the British Spinal Unit. These improvements were predicted (but not promised) by the operating surgeon prior to the surgery and the patient is now fully rehabilitated and out at work in a wheelchair. The operation also revealed a diagnostic inaccuracy on the part of the British Spinal Unit which allowed the chance of an even greater degree of improvement to be lost. This was due to the deterioration of spinal nerves during the time it took the author to understand the situation and make arrangements to get the patient out of Britain and into a university military hospital in Czechoslovakia.”Notes: Size: 9" x 6". Red Hill: A Mining Community by Tony Parker (£28.00)Publisher: William Heinemann — 1986Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0434577715]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Description: From the cover: “The miners’ strike of 1984-5 was one of the longest and most bitter in Britain’s history, and polarised arguments and emotions with more force than any other industrial dispute for years. Six months after it ended, Tony Parker went to the north-east of England to discover the feelings and thoughts of a community around a coal-mine scheduled to be closed, but where there was still hope that the National Coal Board might reprieve it.

Talking with those on both sides of the dispute — miners, their wives, Union officials, policemen, shopkeepers, young people, Coal Board officials, schoolteachers and many others — he offers a truthful and moving portrait of life in a coalfield community today. If they close the pit, they’re closing down my life says a third-generation miner, one of 800 men there whose future, ten years ago, seemed completely secure. A nervous strikebreaker, ostracised by his workmates and feeling betrayed by the delay in transferring him to another pit, talks of the loneliness and isolation of his life. And an industrial chaplain denounces the blatant evil of government strategy during the strike. Tony Parker also talked with many miners’ wives: some of them felt they had discovered themselves for the first time and been invigorated and changed for ever by their involvement with women’s support groups, while others’ marriages had broken under the strain. From this wealth of personal stories, recorded and set down with characteristic sensitivity, a picture emerges of the strike’s causes and effects which is in sharp contrast to the view presented at the time by the media.

This is a vivid social document, giving an unforgettable portrait of Red Hill, a contemporary mining community.”

The Treacle Mine Affair by D. E. Tucker (£28.00)Publisher: The Book Guild — 1993Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 0863328407]Condition: Very Good — in Very Good+ Dust Wrapper. Slight tanning to the edges of the text block otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: From the cover: “One summer the inhabitants of Bincombe begin to behave strangely. They do not know they have been ‘pixillated’ by a peculiar effluent from the local disused lead workings, which include the oddly named ‘Treacle Mine’.

When Peg and Robin join their country cousins Helen and Adrian at Up-hill Farm for the holidays they form an intrepid team to unravel the fate of some stolen cattle and the mystery of the mine. They become entangled in an adventure much more dangerous and exciting than anything they had bargained for. For instance, Adrian’s Geiger counter shows such disturbing results on samples of water that radioactivity adds a frightening threat to the adventure. Strangers invade the village, headed by a master criminal called ‘The Octopus’. They are obviously up to no good and the daring quartet decide to infiltrate the Roman Cavern — scene of the crooks’ nefarious activities.

The boys make an horrific underground descent through a swallow-hole, but their dangerous attempt only raises more questions as to what dreadful scheme the gang are actually involved in. A good deal of hard work on a steam traction engine, plus the loyal support of their dog Shep, enables the cousins to penetrate the villains’ defences and uncover a wicked intrigue which threatens even more than the well-being of the village.

The final part of the adventure takes them into awesome underground passages, where stalagmites and stalactites provide a surrealistic setting for a crime which has distinctly contemporary significance. This thrilling narrative not only gives the reader an exciting mystery to solve — it also provides rich information on country living and on some of the environmental issues that concern us today.”

In The National Geographic Society: 100 Years of Adventure and Discovery, author C. D. B. Bryan covers the entire history of the Geographic, focusing on the guiding personalities behind it — from Gardiner Greene Hubbard and Alexander Graham Bell to three generations of the Grosvenor family; he brings to life its flamboyant explorers and innovative photographers. In this celebration of the Society’s centennial, ten lively chapters of historical narrative alternate with ten special theme sections on subjects such as polar exploration, natural disasters, glorious expeditions, war and conflict, archaeology, and space, — and each of these chapters is jam-packed with dramatic pictorial material selected from the Society’s far-ranging archives. These superb photographs and illustrations form an assemblage of images that, along with Bryan’s absorbing text, recreates the National Geographic Society’s exciting legacy of science and adventure, one that mirrors America’s changing perception of itself and the world over the past one hundred years.”

Moments: Pulitzer Prize Winning Photography by Hal Buell (£25.00)Publisher: Konemann — 2000Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. [ISBN: 9783829035989]Condition: Very Good+ - in Very Good+ DJ. Leans slightly otherwise a very well presented copy.Description: The Pulitzer Prize photographs have borne witness to courage, as evidenced in Joe Rosenthal's moving image of American Gls raising the nation's flag on Iwo Jima; national shock, as in Bob Jackson's photograph of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald; compassion, as seen in Nick Ut's moving image of a young Vietnamese girl, her body burned with napalm, fleeing her devastated village; and to an appeal to conscience, as in Kevin Carter's heartbreaking photograph of a starving Sudanese child being trailed by a vulture. The Pulitzer Prize photographs capture moments of joy, moments of terror, and moments of introspection. Particularly with regard to the images from World War II and Vietnam, these images have become icons of our shared consciousness.Notes: Foreword or introduction by Seymour Topping. The Art of Flowers by Laurence Buffet-Challié (£24.50)Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson — 1969Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Very Good — in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pleasant overall but has two short closed tears to the top edge, one at the head of the spine and the other at the head of the upper panel. Text complete, clean and tight. Box a little faded and marked but more than acceptable.Description: 41 colour plates. 87 black and white illustrations. 78 explanatory diagrams. From the cover: “The flower as a decorative object is an integral part of the home and in recent times has become an important element in the art of interior design. Here, for the first time, the national styles of Germany, England, France, Italy and Scandinavia have been compared, each influenced by the particular climate, way of life, and artistic history of their country. The book begins with the study of basic forms and techniques; later the amateur is taught how to exploit the natural beauty of flowers, how to see colours and arrange a design which will blend in with its setting. The flower arrangements are shown simply and clearly; explanatory diagrams of their construction appear next to the magnificent colour plates or black and white illustrations, most of which have been especially photographed for this book. The author, a specialist in the art of decoration, writes in collaboration with Jacques Bedat, an eminent florist, who created many of the flower arrangements reproduced, and whose creative fantasy is shown in his arrangements for the Rothschilds, the Duchess of Windsor, Renault, Citroen and many others. The Art of Flowers is dedicated to the flower-lover, whether the source of his pleasure is growing, arranging or just looking at flowers.”Notes: Illustrated by Jacques Bedat. Size: 9¾" x 10¼". Freedom And Organization 1814-1914 by Bertrand Russell (£24.00)Publisher: George Allen & Unwin — 1934Binding: Hardback in a Dust Wrapper. First Edition. Condition: Good — in Poor Dust Wrapper. Edges of the dust wrapper somewhat frayed with loss to the top edge of both panels and the spine ends. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned. Description: From the cover: “This book covers the period 1814-1914, and aims at showing the weakening of old forms of authority as a result of Liberal assaults and the more or less unintended growth of new forms of organization owing to economic and technical developments. Its subject is thus the interaction of theory and practice in the politics of the hundred years between the fall of Napoleon and the Great War. It opens with the Congress of Vienna and the Principle of Legitimacy, the Holy Alliance and the domination of Metternich. It then passes to economic theory from Malthus to Marx, as the outcome of early industrialism and the source of Radical and Socialist politics. American development is considered in two phases: the growth of democracy from Jefferson to Lincoln, and the transition from free competition to monopoly in the period from the Civil War to the Great War. Returning to Europe, the Principle of Nationality, as an outcome of Liberalism, is shown as a source of international anarchy. Bismarck, German unity, and German economic development lead to conflicts with Slav Nationalism and British trade; the British seek compensation in Africa, the Russians in the Far East. The growth of national monopolies in industry leads to economic imperialism, identifying economic and national rivalry, and increasing the importance of the State. Concentration of national power grows as International organization disappears, and war results.”Notes: Size: 9" x 5¾". Blue boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 528 pages.
